great fly Barry. I'll start with #16 down to #20 . I did 3 to start and maybe I'll go down to an #18 ,I found the wings were the hardest by far to tie on.But great fly .thanx ken.
Great tie. Sheer 14/0. I have quite a lot of reels in stock, and I like it very much. More recently I've been wooed and wowed by Semperfli 24/0 and 18/0, which is (too) bloody expensive, but amazing. For hooks smaller that #20 the 24/0 comes into its own. Downticks. I cannot imagine why or even how someone would downtick this excellent demonstration of a successful fly. Other top class tyers would not be so crass as to do such a thing. And note - they do not comment to explain their action. It suggests, 1. they're cowardly, 2. they don't know enough to explain, 3. they are stupid.
Thanks D, yeah I have grown to like Sheer and its remarkably strong for 14/0. I'v not tried the Semperfli so I can't comment... Yeah each to their own, but iTs a little disappointing when they don't comment...
Hey Cariboo, thanks thats great to get a name put to it, I'v always known it as a cripple midge, but UA-cam have become so touchy regarding 'forbidden' words in video titles, I'm even considering not using 'nymph' anymore! If your video has any touchy words in the title like cripple YT will take it down right away, so I had to use hatching midge!
Morning Guru Barry Having loads of trouble perfecting a soft hackle, any hackle in fact. have you got a video giving instructions on this Art? Please. Im due to go to North Kent Fly Dressers Guild on Tuesday & Iv promised I`ll get this right if it kills me! Me & my big mouth eh. For obvious reasons I`m getting desperate no w. If you can help please, feeling a tad of a let down especially at Guild. Cheers Barry Regards Woody
Hi Ray, sorry mate just got in the door from tying in Glasgow at the weekend. You are probably deep in it now, Good luck. I doc have several videos on hackling techniques.
I like the scissors - nice sharp fine tips - what brand or model are they? I'm using the Tiemco tungsten carbide razor scissors which are hard to beat but really like the shorter blades of the ones in your video.
An excellent fly, superbly tied. The wing reminds me of the the way Jack Norris used to tie his flat winged flies.
Thank you, Sorry I'm not familiar with Jack Norris?
Lovely looking fly. Well tied and explained. Many thanks.
Thanks Danny.
Excellent fly tying video very well explained thanks for sharing, will definitely give it a go. Cheers Mike
Thank you Mike.
Brilliant. I love the Sheer thread, I use it on a lot of patterns, even on some larger flies.
Thanks Emest, I have become very fond of it and also use it on larger patterns!
Wonderful job sir a joy to watch!
Thanks FRH.
Another neat pattern thanks Barry.
Thanks Tom.
Such clever usage of the CDC here. I imagine it can be used for mayfly dun patterns as well
Thanks.

Forgot to mention I read your article in Fly Tyer magazine, also watched the video. Great job on both, waiting for your book to come to Canada.
Thanks, not seen that article yet!
it looks great, we'll see how long it lasts when hunting.
How long will the CDC wings last after a trout attack?
Thanks, you would be surprised how robust they are!
