James Cameron once said something like the more fantastic the subject matter, the more based in reality the characters need to be. That’s why the first 2 Terminator films work so well, and why the first Turtles movie still stands up today
I think the reason the designs from the 90s film aren’t used in the current films is likely due to a rights issue. Yes Viacom currently owns the rights to the TMNT franchise, but Warner Bros still owns the designs from the 90s film.
Fingers crossed that might happen this year, since 2019 is the 35th anniversary of the first issue of the Mirage comic book being published. I am stunned that Warner Brothers (who purchased New Line Cinema) did not due this for either the 25th anniversary in 2009 or the 30th anniversary in 2014. All three movies have special edition DVD's in Germany, so why can't we special editions here in the US? The German special edition of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) is a little sparse on the special features, it only has a few deleted scenes and an audio commentary from director Steve Barron focused on the technical side of filmmaking. I am sure that Warner Brothers could make a better special edition for American fans.
How he gained all his followers and stuff like that. Obviously he can rule by fear but he had to offer all them thugs and foot soldiers something worth following him for. Almost like a, I don't wanna compare the two but I will, a Negan story in The Walking Dead and the way he got his supporters. Obviously different circumstances but you get my drift.
Anyone not named Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is required by law to not directly recreate the TMNT designs from the first two films, hence the radical redesigns in the third film or their slightly tweaked Injustice look.
Bruce Wayne85 I enjoyed both. 1990, 1992. 1993, 2014, and, 2016. I just forgot everything and just enjoyed the movie. People hate it because of Amell and Fox.. yes. But also for their looks. But you have to understand that in both two series the turtles are built and heavy. They both were strong too, even in the 1980’s cartoon it hints at this strength. The turtles from the latter could have been shorter to like 5’6”- 6’0” as is in the former. The story from the latter about the militarizing state takeover plan of the Ninja Foot Clan from the second should have been brought together with the Shredder’s manipulative violent criminal leader of an army of teen kids and early 20’s adults that basically were misfits and runaways causing crime and mischief in the streets of the first movie. It makes no sense Shredder’s kleptomania and that’s it. As for Splinter I liked both designs of the 1990 and 1992 and 2016 movie series, but dislike the origin story from both! The story should’ve been of: Ninja Master Hamato Yoshi and Teng Shin and their daughter Karai forced out of Japan, running for their lives to New York, after Yoshi had rivaled with Oroku Saki. Slandered threatened abandoned and shamed, Yoshi is fleeing out of the Foot by his rival now called Shredder. Then after Sensei Yoshi had left, Sensei Saki had taken control over the Foot. It should’ve shown the bitter rivalry over the murder of Saki’s drunken angry brother by Yoshi after a big fight in the town against Saki and Yoshi as well as Saki’s students and students still loyal to Yoshi, over the Shredder’s final unrequited loss of Shin, and with the Foot Clan finally threatening for lives of Yoshi Shin and Karai, forcing them to flee the country. Then, as the Shredder takes his control and corrupts the Foot Clan into organized crime it spreads a faction now to America, where he leaves and goes to New York and finds out about Yoshi. It’s there that the drama starts again and Shin is murdered and Karai taken as vengeance. Afterwards Yoshi gets depressed, loses his job, and ends up in the subways to live. He then swears his revenge when an near accident with an automobile causes him to crash into a person holding a jar of baby turtles and for the turtles and Yoshi to be covered with the mutagen. He slowly turns into the rat Splinter (a nickname the turtles fondly gave Yoshi later), and too slowly causes the turtles to also change turtle humanoids they are. Then Splinter and the turtles bond, slowly becomes a family, and he starts training them. Years past and they emerge as the Tmnt crime fighting team we know and love, and they swore to Splinter to get Saki (now called Shredder) for ruining their master’s (Yoshi now called Splinter’s) life, and hoping to one day to reach out covertly to Karai and bring her home reuniting her with her rightful father.
1990 is the pinnacle of TMNT movies . The simple fact that they navigate through a gritty , realistically dangerous NYC satisfies newer fans while staying pretty loyal to the comics . I love this first movie . I saw it in theatres when I was 5 and it’s still one of my favorite movies of all time . I made my dad buy the VHS for me when it came out . It was like 40 goddamn dollars .
there were times in the first movie when you could tell they were suits, but it was such a good movie and the designs looked decent enough that you can look past it and still enjoy the movie. I think at 1 point Casey even points it out directly and says something like zip-neck as an insult to Donnie
The 90 turtles was original, thats why my childhood was the BEST!! Keep the TMNT legacy going, but the new one has a interesting look. Did Donny have some glasses on, in that updated version? LOL and by the way that 3rd TMNT movie design was so..... weird looking. The Eyeballs were bigger than the eye covers. LOL
After the first movie, they deliberately tried to make the Turtles look less realistic and more cartoonish, sort of a reverse-"Who Framed Roger Rabbit" sort of situation, to make it "more appealing to children". One thing I (and a lot of people) never noticed as a kid but do now, is that in the second movie, the Turtles never actually fought Super Shredder. He defeated himself.
The reason why TMNT 2 they didn’t use weapons was because they had a contract with toy stores and ToysRUs and Kaybee ....they thought the first movie was way too violent .... a multi million contract they was strict on TMNT II no weapons were to be used, or else all toys would be pulled off of shelves....
I owned the 1990 movie as a kid. To this day, there is still not a single movie that I've seen more times. It has that perfect mixture of comedy and darkness. It is the most realistic movie as well. And yes, the costumes have not been matched since. I doubt any turtles movie will ever surpass this one.
Yeah with their new series I get that they want to switch things up but the whole magic thing, I just cant get behind. TMNT never had a magic element to it. I know it's weird and ignorant to say this but adding magic to TMNT reminds me of knock off ninja shows and them trying to be cool and relevant 2019 where the landscape had changed. Idk TL;DR The magic element in the new series just seems off
well turtles 2003 did some stuff with magic in season 5 but i dont think they did any thing with it after and they were right some how it just does not fit the turtles
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I always thought they looked weirder and weirder with each iteration. I am a trained illustrator and now a prop and costume maker, and I still enjoy drawing the turtles for fun all the time! And its crazy how many productions get the designs wrong
It was only a fall because parents were scared of the weapons in the first movie. The second and third were not as good looking because they lost money and had to use cheaper materials.
Dude I loved your NES intro theme in there! And followed by the SNES TMNT 4: Turtles in time “kowabunga” once you beat a level. I used to have that as a text alert and the NES intro as my ringer 😃
Love your video. Very well done. Just thought I'd give you my interpretation of the changes between Part 1 and 2. I like to think that the reason Raph and Leo look happier is because they got a little cocky thinking that Shredder was gone. If you think about it, they weren't hiding themselves quite as often as they did originally, which would explain why there was less use of shadows as well. That's just my thought.
As a kid TMNT 2 was my favorite turtle movie. As an adult the first one is. The same goes for Ghostbusters. I have never been able to get through TMNT 3... ever...
@@kyotoandsunchips8585 I think 3 is judged way too harshly. I actually prefer the face shapes of Donnie, Raph and Mikey in 3 over 2....(Leo is an abomination though) It's silly, but Corey Feldman is back as Donatello which is a HUGE plus - and the fight scenes are way better than 2. I think the witty banter between the turtles is also much better in 3 than in 2. 2 just fumbled on so many things....no weapons, the secret of the ooze story itself was botched, no rocksteady and bebop, rehash of shredder, no Casey Jones..... In 3 the turtles also have inner battles and a little emotional growth they have to deal with when it comes to feudal japan vs current day NY which I thought was cool. And the side plot of Casey is actually pretty funny. 3 is comfortable in its own skin. I think if people watch it back it's not as bad as they remember.
I think the quality of the suits are better in the secret of the ozze is better but the designs of the first movie is better cause they looked more grittier
@Punk rock Squat topiaProbably. I don't remember the 80s as well because i was young. I was born in 1984. But i love movies, wrestling and music from that era. The music from 1980s is my favourite.
The best was and always will be the 1990 suits made in the Jim Henson studio. The worst was part 3 because it started the downward spiral. I was disappointed that some of the things we all seen in the designs for the original film weren't in the sequel. Instead they made the designs for the suits lighter and you can tell the difference. Not saying the look was bad from Secret of the Ooze but if you're going to make a sequel... I think we all wanted to see the Turtles from the original. You can see the lighter bandana for the Turtles. Like a more vibrant orange for mikey. Donatello had no chin for part 2 (which was weird). Raphael's eyes weren't as small, angry or bothered by things in the sequel. Leonard's face was less longated and looks scrunched up. I will not talk about 3 because they looked like messed up frogs Did you do "the Rise and Fall of the original TMNT trilogy" and then it's resurgence? We definitely need to get together and talk about the Turtles. Huge fan of the Turtles as well. So much so that I'm collecting the original set of action figures. I have the movies (except the trashy Michael Bay ones). Just can't get myself to buy those trashy films.
I too find the movies past part 2 unwatchable. TMNT 3 did kill the franchise. Next Mutation just dug the corpse up and propped it up pretending it was alive still.
These movies are masterpiece classics in my opinion I remember watching the first two as a kid especially the first one then years later I watched it again to only see just how amazing it was with depth of characters the scenes with the music go so well together with a dark gritty comedic feel I just love the originals an wish they remade them today with the costumes and not CGI one can only hope but I feel those times ate long gone.

Some insights: eyes were the most important feature on any character or creature. The eyes in the 1990 movie have much better proportions and realism to a "real creature" compared to the cartoony versions of movies 2 and 3. The poportion of the bandanas and how the eyes sit behind them are one of the keys to achieving the "classic turtle look". Whoever did the sculpts and animatronics for the subsequent films didn't bother to capture these details. In regards to the movie #2 and 3, they were told to tone down the violence, hence the lack of weapon use and more slapstick / Jackie Chan style action comedy with found props and weapons. This was reflected in the look of the eyes and the faces. Understand that on number 3, I assume contractually that they had no access to the original molds used by Jim Henson's company, so all new sculpts and molds were made. Based on the artist / sculptors interpretation, you could have liknesses that are more truthful to the originals or more like charicatures. The reason why Raph's face (as an example) looks so different from 1990 to movie #3 is that the size of the eyes and the way the bandana overlaps the brow of the eyes, making the 1990 version more "scowled" constantly. The other versions could be off by 5mm and it would throw this look off. Also, they seemed to have made the mouth areas bigger on the subsequent movies to fit in more servos (or cheaper ones) resulting less accurate looking faces.
I always enjoyed the 3rd movie more than the 2nd. I was so distracted by the turtles going out of their way to avoid using their weapons that it completely destroyed the film. While the 3rd film was nowhere near what I wish it was, I was just so relieved to see them using their weapons again to where it helped me enjoy the film much more than if they had avoided them like in the 2nd movie.
I kind of feel like the designs from the second movie onward tried to make the suits look more like the cartoon designs, most likely to appeal more to younger kids. Secret of the Ooze in particular seems to hint at this: The bandannas are brighter, their eyes are bigger and brighter, their facial expressions are more exaggerated and cartoonish. You could argue TMNT 3 took it further, but I think that's more due to the suits being made by a different company.
I liked Donatello in part 2 alot more. (Probably because i watched part 2 first) But i can give reasons why, he looks and sounds more dorky/intelligent. That's all.
The saddest thing is knowing someone thought it was remotely okay to have the 3rd movie costumes be on the cover of DVDs of the first two, I hate seeing those editions because it's false advertising and does no justice to the quality of the suits in them
Looks like they enlarged the eyes for 2 from the first and elongated the nose, raphs head got wider Turtles 3 could have been epic if itd been dark like the 1st
This may be controversal but I felt the 2nd movie costumes were better than the 1st. By then, the crew animatronics were improved and became more expressive.
You should also include splinters design. 1990 was by far the best. It looked like a real animal. The nose was wet. And had a lot of moisture in the eyes. You could almost imagine what he’d smell like from how real everything looked.
Saw the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in theatres at three years old with my older brother, one of my favorite memories. The original movie has some truly philosophical scenes, with Splinter telling Raphael, “Anger clouds the mind, turned inwards it is an unconquerable enemy. You are unique among your brothers because you choose to face this enemy alone, but as you face it do not forget them and do not forget me, I am here my son”.
The reason there was a huge change from 1990 to 1991 in the turtles design is that parents complained the first TMNT was quite violent and gritty, so the producers decided to make them more kid friendly, and that’s also the reason they don’t use their weapons and make more jokes all the time.
As an OG turtles fan , i agree to all said in this video. Every other movies after the first 2 are all garbage. And as for the 3rd movie ..why in the world havent they worked on a follow up of the Super Shredder at the end of the second...Or at least bring him back. Well Cowabunga to yall duudes !
TMNT #1 Is the Best TMNT movie out all of them. CGI has nothing on this movie. It replicates and stays true to the cartoons Series and comics 👍. This human Shredder is so awesome. TMNT Part 2 takes 2nd place.
I remember going to see part 3 in the movies and told my mother I was going to the bathroom and stayed out side playing the arcades instead she was pissed 😡
In elementary school in the 80s, I created rivals to the turtles that were mutant dinosaurs. They were a triceratops, t-rex, stegosaurus, and a torosaurus. They were human-sized and used other kobudo weapons and throwing stars.

It would be interesting a movie that explains how it went from a ninja Clan to a Yakuza group
original 90's movie is always and will always be the best.
Anyone not named Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is required by law to not directly recreate the TMNT designs from the first two films, hence the radical redesigns in the third film or their slightly tweaked Injustice look.
1990 TMNT is the best movie and always will be...
Jim Henson created the 1990 Turtles...need I say more? Easily the best design. The costumes burned in a fire from what I understand.
He did the 2nd one too
@@wittyexquisite yeah. And it’s painfully obvious he didn’t do the third one.
the fight is 20x better than that stupid michael bay TMNT!!
@@fbnflaviusbroadcastingnetw6786 I think it's good
The first movie is a prime example of "really making characters believable"
1990 is the pinnacle of TMNT movies . The simple fact that they navigate through a gritty , realistically dangerous NYC satisfies newer fans while staying pretty loyal to the comics . I love this first movie . I saw it in theatres when I was 5 and it’s still one of my favorite movies of all time . I made my dad buy the VHS for me when it came out . It was like 40 goddamn dollars .
There will never be another Jim Henson.
there were times in the first movie when you could tell they were suits, but it was such a good movie and the designs looked decent enough that you can look past it and still enjoy the movie.
I think at 1 point Casey even points it out directly and says something like zip-neck as an insult to Donnie
Damn i miss these turtles,, the good ole days
TMNT 1990 is Wonderful. Some scenes I will argue are heartfelt and genuinely amazing
8:36 I can’t tell you how the shot of them jumping makes me feel but I love it so much
I owned the 1990 movie as a kid. To this day, there is still not a single movie that I've seen more times. It has that perfect mixture of comedy and darkness. It is the most realistic movie as well. And yes, the costumes have not been matched since. I doubt any turtles movie will ever surpass this one.
Original 3 tmnt movies were & still betta dan da newer versions regardless of any
Thoughts\words any1 has
This is a great break down of the original characters. I almost forgot how awesome they were.
i feel like Nick should lose the right to TMNT.
Idk
TL;DR The magic element in the new series just seems off
I agree with you both!
well turtles 2003 did some stuff with magic in season 5 but i dont think they did any thing with it after and they were right some how it just does not fit the turtles
Parents always spoiling things being ti damn protective making things boring
I agree that the 1990 TMNT suits were the best but I still have a soft spot for the way the turtles looked in secret of the ooze
The toys they made over the years were all good. Lol remember the ones and could transform back into turtles? I loved it for some reason.
Dude I loved your NES intro theme in there! And followed by the SNES TMNT 4: Turtles in time “kowabunga” once you beat a level. I used to have that as a text alert and the NES intro as my ringer 😃
I can still vividly remember the long line I had to wait in and the completely packed theater for the first movie
It's so cool to know someone out there puts as much time and effort into TMNT as the love we have for them!
You should have included the 2007 CGI film given it's technically the fourth film in this series.
No what are u talking about that’s the 3rd one the other one never happened don’t tell anyone 🤫
10:44 Sausage link nunchuks? I think you mean "combat cold-cuts"! That line always cracked me up as a kid. 😂 (Next time I'll use mustard!)
I always thought about this. They made part 2 and 3 very “cartoony”. The first film has the most realistic costumes.
I became TMNT fan for life due to the movie
Part 3 turtles had some kind of disease that they died from. And so went the franchise.
As a kid TMNT 2 was my favorite turtle movie. As an adult the first one is. The same goes for Ghostbusters. I have never been able to get through TMNT 3... ever...
I haven't seen 3 yet and I want to
@@kyotoandsunchips8585 I think 3 is judged way too harshly. I actually prefer the face shapes of Donnie, Raph and Mikey in 3 over 2....(Leo is an abomination though)
It's silly, but Corey Feldman is back as Donatello which is a HUGE plus - and the fight scenes are way better than 2.
Sequels meant more story, back then! This is likely why everyone loved TMNT 2 more.
I don't know why but I can always cassualy watch tmnt 3 fully same for the others too
The original heads were sold to collectors, since you seemed to want to know. It wasn't rot that got em it was $.
I think the quality of the suits are better in the secret of the ozze is better but the designs of the first movie is better cause they looked more grittier
I preferred Donnys face in part two. It looked more unique from Raphs and suited his character. I thought the voice was far better suited too.
Absolutely agreed. Plus I think I like Raph’s voice from SotO more than the first movie, but idk I need to rewatch these movies again.
@@hYBRYDcOBRA I disagree. Josh Pais, did the best job with his voice, in the first movie. SotO, he sounds just macho, but in TMNT, he sounds badass!
Man the 1990s was a good time. Wish i could transport back to the 90s. Hopefully they'll invent a time machine.
Time sceptre?
imagine seeing this opening day, that would be so fun. Everyone super excited 😃
I will not talk about 3 because they looked like messed up frogs
Did you do "the Rise and Fall of the original TMNT trilogy" and then it's resurgence?
I’m in love with my Neca 1990 TMNT figures. Best design ever!
@jeremy pantoja.ive been waiting 29years for the movie turtles toys.getting at least 1 for my Christmas possibly raphael but hopefully my mrs will get me all 4.sdcc has lots of tmnt reveals in the next week tmnt2 movie figures any1?? Oh hell yeah.
kryo Boy I can’t wait to get Shredder
@@barrymccockiner773 movie shredder or cartoon shredder?.those new batman vs ninja turtles figures that were revealed yesterday are so cool especially the raphael figure.
@@barrymccockiner773 im hoping shredder gets a single figure release as im only after the 4 turtles splinter shredder and some foot soldiers.im curious to see what neca has on show regarding the 2nd movie figures at sdcc nxt week.have fun with ur shredder when u get it m8👍
kryo Boy are they actually making TMNT 2 figures? That’d be sick. I really hope we get a 1990 Casey Jones neca figure.
1, & 2 are the best.
Turtles 90 was absolute art!
Haven't even noticed back then that the turtles in movie 1 and movie 2 were different... :O
I agree 1st movie best version ever!!!
Damn, the music in the first movie was actually pretty good. Never really noticed that before.
My theory on the bandana change: April hooked them up with new masks.
I love how you use old simpson references! (The good yrs.) 1990 tmnt was the best!
I can't believe parents where so concerned about kids hitting themselves with nun-chucks. I'd like to see some stats on how often this happened.
1 n 2 is the best versions...CGI was okay but never would top the originals
I want Guillermo del Toro to direct the next TMNT movie.
xD
I love tmnt 2 more than any of the other movies. it captures the innocence of the cartoon
I liked Donatello in part 2 alot more.
(Probably because i watched part 2 first)
But i can give reasons why, he looks and sounds more dorky/intelligent.
That's all.
I loved turtles 3. Still do. Walker is a dope villain. But I understand why people dislike it
The saddest thing is knowing someone thought it was remotely okay to have the 3rd movie costumes be on the cover of DVDs of the first two, I hate seeing those editions because it's false advertising and does no justice to the quality of the suits in them
I've said before and I'll say it again:
"Ninja-kick the damn rabbit!" Lol Mikey had the best lines xD
Looks like they enlarged the eyes for 2 from the first and elongated the nose, raphs head got wider
Turtles 3 could have been epic if itd been dark like the 1st
Apparently when it came down to it, parents wanted them to be more and more safe, and cartoonish.. so that's why their design became so bad.
Yeah the best was part 1 the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I'll never call Gulf a dog game again...
This may be controversal but I felt the 2nd movie costumes were better than the 1st. By then, the crew animatronics were improved and became more expressive.
The puppets look far more real than the terrible cgi movies
These movies made my childhood awesome!!
Even today, in the age of cgi, those turtle costumes are pretty impressive
TMNT #1 Is the Best TMNT movie out all of them. CGI has nothing on this movie. It replicates and stays true to the cartoons Series and comics 👍. This human Shredder is so awesome. TMNT Part 2 takes 2nd place.
I remember going to see part 3 in the movies and told my mother I was going to the bathroom and stayed out side playing the arcades instead she was pissed 😡
Lol was it that bad back then? I didnt even notice as a kid.i do now! Lol
Damn ya mom should have punished you for a month you left her in there to watch a wack movie all alone
In elementary school in the 80s, I created rivals to the turtles that were mutant dinosaurs. They were a triceratops, t-rex, stegosaurus, and a torosaurus.
They were human-sized and used other kobudo weapons and throwing stars.
Tmnt 1990 - awesome 10/10
Tmnt 2 secret of the ooze - pretty good 7/10
Tmnt 3 In time - terrible 3/10
'We're the Turtles and we're waiting for you!'
*uncontrollable screaming*
"raphael.. he's the leader of the group transformed from the norm by the nuclear goop! pizza's the food that's sure to please, these ninjas are in to pepperoni and cheese!"
i knew every word of that turtle power song as a kid!😄😄😄
Wow, I didn't remember that the turtles from part III looked so bad!
Part 2 and 3 were executives meddling trying to justify there jobs
And to please snowflake parents complaining about the violence like other PG movies before TMNT weren't as violent
