- Pleased to hear he is out of retirement - one of the smoothest voices in the industry. This song is big on character and has been on my radar for some time because of its highly distinctive chord progression and defiant use of suspensions, inversions and pedal tones. Phil Collins performed this song during the original Live Aid concert while he was in the UK before taking a Concord to Philadelphia to play drums at the same event.
Watching these video performances motivated me to buy a keyboard... hopefully one day I will be able to play something....Paul, great job! Keep it up and thanks for the inspiration!

i usually play drums on the band but damn this makes me wanted to learn piano so bad :( really great job, all i can say is your cover is very smooth and satisfying.
I'm the opposite to you..I play piano and sing and always wanted to play drums....so I started with a drum teacher a year ago.

Thank you Romel - I'll try to give you the best answer I can to your question. I try lots of songs and only develop the ones which sound good. In other words, I accept that some songs cannot sound good on piano. I usually play three parts, left hand bass, right hand melody and accompaniment. I play the melody loudly and the accompaniment quietly and I occasionally use my left hand to add accompaniment. I play the song lots of times, adjusting the arrangement a little bit each time I play it to make incremental improvements. I hope this at least partly answers your question. Paul.

@paulwells where did you learn to play like that? I've never seen anybody put two fingers on top of each other to play a single note or use your index finger to go between notes. Very curious.
Thanks BrownBindle for your comment - I tried playing this piece just now and without thinking crossed fingers on the Eb which is carrying the tune, to give it a bit more emphasis. It feels comfortable.

@@paulwwells such great musicianship from this old lady's era! No auto tune baloney. Just the real deal! I'm working on Joni Mitchell's Help Me and this aging diva (me) is having a hell of a time working on my vocal break (chest into head voice). I hate getting old. Oh well. At least I was accepted to sing at Carnegie Hall and get called any time to join the chorus. Just search my name in UA-cam. Enjoy the madness!

I love the way you synthesize the piano's upper notes and the melody. I was worried for a second that you'd do one or the other. But as always, you showed me that Paul's got it ALL under control! :-) Wonderful improvisations and additions in the second verse. Fantastic work, sir.
+equesfuscus Thank you. I'm starting to do that more and more and it feels quite liberating. The piano is sensitive enough, and the recording and play-back is clean enough to distinguish between melody and accompaniment - so why not? The melody doesn't have to be the top line.

Thank you Armen. I don't have this piano any more (although I do still have its sound with a Roland expansion module - Integra), but when I listen back to these old videos I hear that the sound is broader than I remember.
