  • Why don't more young people vote, and what keeps them from voting?
TEACHERS: Get your students in the discussion on KQED Learn, a safe place for middle and high school students to investigate controversial topics and share their voices. learn.kqed.org/topics/15
There are many reasons young people don't vote, but that doesn't mean they aren't politically active in other ways. Young people are engaging with the political process by protesting, boycotting, and posting to social media. While these actions are all great, the question still stands as to why young people are willing to take certain actions but not necessarily head to the polls.
ABOVE THE NOISE is a show that cuts through the hype and investigates the research behind controversial and trending topics in the news. Hosted by Myles Bess.

    * Are millennials the first young generation have low voter turnout?
No, far from it! Younger generations have always had low voter turnout rates. When the baby boomers were in their 20s, they also didn't vote at the rates they do today. Some headlines will suggest that low voter turnout among millennials and generation z is a new thing, but this is definitely not the case.
    * What keeps young people from voting?
This is a complicated question with many answers that are all related to each other (watch the video to find out!), but the simple answer is that campaigns tend not to focus on issues that affect younger people because they don't think they will vote. This, in turn, gives younger people less incentive to actually vote. It's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    * Where can someone register to vote?
It's easy! You can go here: vote.gov/

Interesting question for sure. Here in Switzerland, we vote a lot (more than 10 topics per year), and we don't have some of your problems : you receive a letter to vote, some parts of the country even do it online. There are lots of political parties, so everyone finds ideas that are in their line of thought. We have a civics course as standard for everyone.
But still, young people are the people less likely to vote, wich means there are other factors

I've also read that in US, poor tend to not vote and the rich vote more. It is interesting as the situation is opposite in India plus voting booths are mandated to be within 2km of your residence so sometimes election officials have even crossed mountains and deserts for a single voter. Voter ID is required but that ID is kind of the basic citizen ID which is needed for whole lot of other services.
Voting is low in 18-25 age bracket but all other age brackets vote more or less equally.

You should bring up the ability to get mail in ballots. I know you mentioned a lot of people in our generation either can’t miss work (for me it’s university) or can’t drive to a polling station. I opted for a mail in ballot so I could guarantee my vote, since I wasn’t sure if I would be able to take the day off of class. It’s a great option for others in the same situation, and would probably make it even more appealing for those in our age range.

I'm pretty excited to be able to vote for the first time this year! Well, I mean, If we still have voting considering recent events. I wanted to be able to vote in the primaries as well, but since they're being held two days before my 18th birthday this year I won't be able to. I always thought it would be nice if they lowered the voting age to at least 16, since students around that age are just starting to learn about their government and may be more eager to voice their opinions.

There has been a shift away from teaching civics in most states - and if it's still a requirement, it's often disconnected from real life and just a rote thing to memorize. Experts in civic engagement say that young people need to understand how policy impacts their lives, and is relevant to their day to day in order to remember how government works and get involved.

Thanks for watching - and commenting. The study we included about people's attitudes towards political parties was specifically looking at people that are considered "millennials" - ages 18-30. So yes, there is a high percentage of that age group across racial and ethnic groups that believe a third party is needed. But we didn't present data to support that ALL age groups feel that way.

    • @tschichpich
      @tschichpich 5 років тому +1

i won't argue that it's not part of the problem, what i meant is that it's not the reason for the difference in ages.
I my self didn't go to vote untill now but the change the political atmosphere in germany makes me go to vote the next time. For me the reason was that i didn't really know who would be the best for me.
