This particular ending theme is one of the best pieces of music from any daytime show. It's orchestral, grand, melancholy and classy. In general, the '70s soap themes with orchestras and full, rich sounds were the best. I'm a big fan of Another World's ending theme from this era as well.

I remember my mother, who was in her late 60s at the time, watching about four TV soap operas every day, and she never missed this one, mid-1960s early 1970s. Some say these shows helped people of her generation deal with the turbulent cultural changes of the era. But the soaps still had their power to scandalize. I still remember Mom verbalizing her shock when one of the plots involved things like infidelity, which was never spoken about in our home.

I must have watched at least a few episodes of just about every soap opera that aired in the US during the late 1960s, '70s and '80s...but of all of them, this is the only one whose theme music I know by heart and hear in my head in its entirety, after all these years. Brings back memories of being sick at home on school days or during the summer, or at my paternal grandma's house when I was laid up after an accident that fractured my pelvis in 1976. Unquestionably one of the best soaps ever made, and this music is just one of many reasons why. Thanks for putting this up!

This definitely was from 1976, probably summer time frame. John Reilly was playing Dan here, and when I hit 11th grade in fall '76, John Colenback had resumed the role. The show had gone to an hour in 12/75, so, they brought back retired characters (e.g., Dick Martin, Sandy Hughes and Don Hughes, except I wonder why Martin West's name isn't in this cast)and aged children. They also killed off Brian Ellison (off screen) and brought Mary back as a regular. Annie and Dee, who were wonderfully played by Martina and Marcia, were in college now. Betsy was played with continuity by Suzanne. Alma was a regular 'til she left in late '78. What I liked abt World Turns is that it would keep characters on the canvas whether or not they had story. You'd see Nancy, Alma and Kim drop in on Lisa to go out to lunch. Bob and Dan were making house calls then. Even John. (ugh!) Susan was as nasty a witch as he was a warlock back then. This show was just so good. It was about the characters.

World Turns repeated names a lot. Aside from those Danny mentions, there were John Hughes (Chris' brother/Bob's uncle), John Eldridge and John Dixon; Susan Hughes (Chris & Nancy's dead daughter), Susan Burke Stewart and "Suz" ('82); Jeff Baker, Jeff Ward, and the teacher Jeff whom Emily dated; Brad Hollister and Brad Snyder; Franny Brennan and Franny Hughes; Joyce Colman and Bob & Kim's nanny Joyce; Jay Stallings and Jay Connor; etc. Only when they resumed the role of John Eldridge in the '90s did I recall there being same-named characters on simultaneously: John Dixon was the other. [Of course, there were plenty of Stewart doctors and at least four with that surname at Memorial at the same time. Bob used to joke that they didn't know which Dr. Stewart was being paged.]

    *Date Range(so far): December 1, 1975 - September 17, 2010*
0:55 "Written by Robert Soderberg and Edith Sommer"
Both of these writers wrote for the show from July 1973 to December 1978.
    *Date Range(so far): December 1, 1975 - December 31, 1978*
    1:12
    "Bob Hughes - Don Hastings
    Nancy Hughes - Helen Wagner
    Chris Hudges - Don MacLaughlin
    David Stewart - Henderson Forsythe
    Alma Miller - Ether Remey
    John Dixon - Larry Bryggman
    Carol Stallings - Rita McLaughlin
    Kim Dixon - Kathryn Hays
Tom Hughes - C. David Colson
    Jay Stallings - Dennis Cooney
    Susan Stewart - Marie Masters
    Dan Stewart - John Reilly
    Grant Colman - James Douglas
    Joyce Colman - Barbara Rodell
    Betsy Stewart - Suzanne Davidson
    Natalie Hughes - Judith Chapman
    Sany Garrison - Barbara Rucker
    Ellen Stewart - Patricia Bruder
    Mary Ellison - Kelly Wood
    Kevin Thompson - Michael Nader
    Dick Martin - Edward Kemmer
    Valerie Conway - Judith McConnell
    Dee Stewart - Marcia McClain
    Annie Stewart - Martina Deignan
    Marian Connelly - Clarice Blackburn
    Pat Holland - Melinda Peterson
    Doris Haley - Kathleen Klein
    Pamela Freedly - Kay Arnold
    Laurie - Laurel Delmar
    and
Lisa Shea Colman - Eileen Fulton"
There is a bit of a date conflict with these cast of characters, specifically the ones whose last names are Stewart.
John Reilly played as Dan Stewart until January 1976; he was replaced by John Colenback, who played as Dan Stewart AGAIN until September 1979 (John Coleback played as Dan Stewart from January 1966 to January 1973, who was replaced by the aforementioned John Reilly). BUT...
Dee Stewart and Annie Stewart came back on June 4, 1976 played by Marcia McClain and Martina Deignan respectfully; both characters stopped appearing on the show at least two years prior to their return.
So either Dee Stewart and Annie Stewart returned when John Reilly still played as Dan Stewart, or John Colenback was unavailable for some episodes including Dee Stewart and Annie Stewart so John Reilly took over the role as a substitute until John Colenback came back to play Dan Stewart again.
Alma Miller and Pat Holland played as Ether Remey and Melinda Peterson respectfully, until 1977.
    *Date Range(so far): 1976 - 1977*
1:59 Stay tuned for The Guiding Light, NEXT on most of these CBS stations.
The title card just says "Guiding Light", which first appeared on November of 1975. But the announcer say "The Guiding Light", which probably means that this change was recent.
    *Date Range(so far): early-to-mid 1976*

ATWT was at no. 1 in the ratings here (likely 1976-78). But it was about to be dethroned (and badly too) when Ally My Children took over the top spot.

Such a classic opening of As The W🌍rld Turns. I really wish there were ways we could stream old episodes of ATWT. There should be a Soap Opera Network.

Looks like between November 1975 and sometime in 1978, after the show expanded to an hour, and while the husband-and-wife team of Robert Soderberg and Edith Sommer were the head writers.

Used to watch this in the summers with my mother and grandmother (when we'd go visit her and grandpa for whatever reason) and this sure does bring back the memories of those times in the early and mid 70s!

looks like 1976-1978 since Michael Nader's in the credits - obviously predating his being dashing Dex Dexter on "Dynasty" by 6-8 years. Also this predates Barbara Rodell's character Joyce being married to Don since her surname is still Colman.

    • @NoHu4
      @NoHu4 6 років тому +4

Correct. Joyce married Don about '78. Nader left that year and was replaced. (Marie Masters' treatment of Nader was training for his abuse by Joan Collins on Dynasty. Poor sweet jet-setting Kevin. He died in '79 while married to Sandy.)

The best daytime soap opera theme! I hated the themes of this once great show.. after 1981 they tried modernizing ATWT’s theme. This had a really classy sound..

They were still calling Guiding Light 'The' Guiding Light, if anyone noticed. Even though they dropped The from the title in 1975 they didn't officially start calling it just Guiding Light until 1977 when the Spaulding family was introduced.

I'd say the year was 1976; Gillian Spencer (Jennifer) was not in the credits, plus John Reilly was Dan Stewart and Patricia Bruder was back, as she had been away from the show for much of '75.

Does anybody know why Patricia Bruder appears later in. the credits. I would think she should appear right by Henderson Forsythe since they both started at the same time in 1960. But she is much later in the credits.

    • @skipeastport5529
      @skipeastport5529 3 роки тому

Probably because she left in 1975 and was off nearly a year. The credits were arranged by seniority at this time, and I guess her leaving pushed her farther down in the credits when she came back.
