Hi guys, remember to follow us over on Instagram- we post real time stories as we eat our way through Mexico. If you liked this one, please give it a 👍 and let us know in the comments. Have a brilliant weekend everyone! Cheers, Thomas & Sheena 😘
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena: I truly never thought ld enjoy your Mexico series, after all my only experience with "Mexican foods" has been Nachos (not a patch on the tempting bag/street snacks you ate) or as l said last time, good old Old El Paso meal kits!!! But the interesting, fresh and mouthwatering foods you have filmed has changed my mind completely, and had me salivating with food regret!! The history behind the foods has impressed me. Just a couple of questions if l may ask: The Tuna fruit drink was pink this time not green like the ice cream/sorbet, are there different colours to the fruit or like say a quince does the colour change on preparing? Or was the colour just from the hibiscus. And secondly the fruit drink stall kept the syrups of each flavour in a large receptacle, was this a clay/ pottery pot and is it to keep the fruit/juice/ hochata cool or is it to promote the fermentation process. Im unsure if the hochata component is fermented. I did Google it, its traditionally served from these clay pots but lm not sure the reason for it. And for anyone whose interested this is a dairy free/ lactose free concoction, so you can have this creamy drink without the tummy upset! Just curious and keen to learn more from you who are on the ground!. Great video.👍
Hi Brilliant But Blue, it makes us super excited and happy to hear that! The diversity in the cuisine here really blows us away. We think about the type of Mexican food we have access to in NZ and Australia and it doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of the cuisine. To answer your questions, we've seen green, pink and orange tuna at the markets and it seems the pink and the green are mostly commonly used for sweets and drinks. I'm not sure about the horchata and why it's stored and served from a clay pot. It's not a fermented drink. Oaxaca has many villages which are famous for pottery- my guess is that's a simply a part of the culture- to use traditional vessels to store foods and prepare foods in? Perhaps a Mexican viewer can shed some light? Thanks for watching this one- so happy you enjoyed it 😍 Cheers, Sheena
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena: Thankyou soooo much for your reply. Probably the clay pot is a throw back to the Aztecs as its history dates back to ancient times. Now l know that its not a fermented drink and the claypot has no purpose other than its traditional heritage, you KNOW lm going to have a crack at recreating that drink!!! Now to hunt down some prickly pear in Australia and lm onto it. Ive had a go at trying to recreate a few of the dishes you have shown us, as you provide so much detail on the ingredients, texture and flavour lve had some awesome flavour filled dinners!
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena: We have pulled off the Chendol (Malaysia series) and the burnt milk ice cream, with a little help from Google as well as the crispy Taco topped with refried beans etc. But the Horchata will be a bit of a challenge to get the ingredients and flavours correct!!☺
My future daughter in law is mexican..I love how we can ask her about different foods an how to make them.. So many beautiful churches in your older or big cities an countries.they are so beautiful.
She must have some great family recipes to share with you all Joan Rath! We love the churches here- I think they’re the most beautiful we’ve seen anywhere 😄 thanks for watching and commenting on this one! Cheers, Sheena

Oaxaca looks amazing. Love the architecture of that Church you had your snack at. That meat alley was amazing, reminds me doing the same thing in Thailand with seafood. That chorizo looked so juicy. That large tortilla was epic. Great Mexico series. Cheers.
It is such a beautiful place Rebecca! It has a really lovely energy about it. Yes- very much like in Thailand worth the seafood! So happy you are enjoying this series. Thanks for watching and commenting 😘 Cheers, Sheena

Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena Thank you for taking your time and commenting back ☺️. My uncle owns Oaxaquen restaurants in Mid city LA called “Expression Oaxaqueña” you guys should give it a try and rate the food ! Pure authentic oaxaqueñ cuisine .
Love those huge containers of horchata! Our favorite horchata in NYC is from a Oaxacan restaurant and they also serve it with the pecans - so cool! Now with tuna in it sounds really interesting
Oh wow that grilled meat ally was remarkable, it’s so cool the system they have. Choose your meat and then choose your sides and drink and go sit down. So awesome, I’m really loving your Mexico series guys thank you for sharing your experience and tips. I think I’ll leave the grasshoppers to you though 🤣❤️
It’s such a neat experience FitAngie. We really enjoyed filming there and hopefully gave you a feel for what it’s all about. The grasshoppers are really tasty. Just like wee chips really. Thanks for watching this one! Cheers, Thomas 😀
This looks like a fun experience guys!!!!🙂👍 The items look of a very high standard😲 That Horchata looks interesting👍 Mexican pizza!!!!!😉🙃 Those cheesy spicy chips look the perfect way to end a day - cheers guys😋😋
😆 I was so confused by what was going on I was a bit like a chicken with my head cut off- but it did result in some tasty food so it turned out well 😂 Thanks for watching Bob GUENTHER and we're so glad you enjoyed this one! Cheers, Sheena
😆😆😆😆 these tasted like crispy, tangy fried ‘things’! We had fried scorpions once- they tasted like KFC 😂 Thanks for watching this series Sarah! Hope you’re liking it 😄 Cheers, Sheena
😆😆😆😆 hope you had a snack on hand mate! My mouth is watering too just thinking about the food in this video. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Sheena
😍😍😍 yay so glad you enjoyed it Bee Oh El! Hahaha filming in meat alley was crazy, I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off 😆 thanks for watching and commenting, hope you’re having a lovely weekend! Cheers, Sheena 😘
There’s a restaurant near my house that serves authentic Oaxacan food. Grasshoppers and all. I never know what to get. Now I do! Thanks for another great and informative video.

Hi Tats! Awesome to see you here in the comments mate- thanks for watching and commenting 😄 You would love it here the food is incredible and the street food scene is wild. Wouldn’t it be cool if we could travel here together one day?! 😍 S x
Wow, that market adventure was something else! I've never seen one where you go stall-to-stall to gather your meal ingredients. I'm a big fan of horchata. Even here in rural South Carolina, I can get authentic, Mexican "instant" horchata. Loving this Mexico tour!
That's awesome MsKestrela- it's such a refreshing drink isn't it? I love it too. That market is so much fun- it's a little bewildering but everyone is really friendly so it's a great experience. So glad you are enjoying this Mexico series. Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you're having a brilliant weekend! Cheers, Sheena
😍😍😍😍😍 we really enjoyed them! Such a great night time snack those tostiesquites! Thanks for watching and commenting AIDA México, hope you are enjoying our Mexico series so far! Cheers, Sheena

Thank you for coming along! 😍 it really is such a fascinating food culture in Oaxaca- we love it! Thanks for watching and commenting Jo 😘 Cheers, Sheena
Wow! Im lost for words. I was really excited when l clicked so fast to see what treats you had this time. How do you pull this off, this is the full experience. No matter what country you are in you embrace the food, the culture and the history of each destination complete with the a "taste" of the area through the lens. All of the foods including the fruit water where epic. Last vid you explained that each region has foods unique to the region, and you can see this in what you selected to eat. Mouthwatering! Even the grasshoppers, ld give them a go, they actually looked tasty. Thanks for the funny outakes.... ahhh the things you do for sucess! Great work👍
Thanks for your brilliant comment. This video was a riot to film. So much fun. We hope we managed to get across the feeling of meat alley and the whole process of getting your meal. We love how different the food is in Oaxaca compared to what we filmed in Mexico City. They’re not that far apart really on the map but the food culture is totally different. Haha re the outtakes. Sheena practicing her yoga to get to the table 😂 Thanks such much for watching. Cheers, Thomas 😀
Remember when you two were marveling at the drink size at Coney Island? Check out 3:27! 😳 *_Meat Alley_* - I know it's budget friendly but did $180 MXN include the beer, tortilla and accoutrements? Or just the meat? *_Tostilocos_* - Dorilocos in CDMX; Tostilocos in Oaxaca. 😂 You two may like Frito Pie in the U.S. It's a corn chips based, mince and cheese casserole dish but when it's made in the individual bag, it's often called a walking taco. *_Really fun day, guys!_*
🤣🤣🤣 you are right Tosh- the supersized drinks exist here too- pulque, atole, Agua de frescas- I’ve seen them all in gigante size 😝 The $180 was for the whole lot- the meat was $75 if I remember correctly. That Frito pie/ walking taco sounds right up my alley- anything with mince and cheese! Thanks for watching and commenting on this one mate. Cheers, Sheena
@Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena $180 for all that makes me happy! 👍 Frito Pie - And before anyone corrects me, it's corn chips topped with ground beef chilli. Wasn't sure if chilli is popular in NZ...kind of overthinking things. Saturdays in the fall/winter are really long and exhausting due to college football morning to night. West coast games are still in full swing. *_Have a great rest of the weekend, guys._*
I like .people from other country love ourexican food. I'm from Mexico city . And I know all food you are eating...noce videos..never stop make those videos.. congratulations, beautiful people....
Thank you for your lovely comment Ricardo Hernandez! We love Mexico so much and are so happy to be back filming and eating! Hope you enjoy the rest of our Mexico series 😍 Cheers, Sheena
Hey, you guys are so lucky 🍀 I wish I could go there. I’ve been to a Mexican restaurant and ate their food but never actually been to Mexico 🇲🇽 (love ur videos) 🦋
We hope you can visit one day too Dora Demir! Mexico is a really special place to travel around. What did you eat at the Mexican restaurant? Until you get here, hope you enjoy travelling and eating your way around with us! Thanks for watching and commenting mate- so happy you are liking our videos! Cheers, Sheena 😄
A FAT joint, a big mug of freshly ground coffee and a new Chasing The Plate episode with Thomas and Sheena.......yeah my Saturday morning is looking good, really good:
Haha hope it was a great start to your weekend. Thanks very much for watching this one. It was such a fun one to film. Meat alley is a riot of fun. Cheers, Thomas 😀
17:57 that way to deliver the tlayuda is for tourists, the original way is folded by the half and cut in 2 pieces with the meat spread inside, I don't know why but it tastes better than the tourist version
We’ve had both and I agree, the original way tastes better- I reckon it’s because the ingredients get to mingle and meld together 😆 and it’s easier to eat 😝 The way they present this one is pretty though haha. Thanks for watching, hope you enjoy the rest of our Oaxaca videos! Cheers, Sheena
Hi mate! Thanks for watching and commenting! Yep I’m Chinese 😄 I wish I could speak Spanish- we like to learn a little of the local language wherever we travel- enough to order food etc- It’s fun practising with the locals 😆 hope you enjoyed this one! Cheers, Sheena
Haha it was the best way to describe it 😂 really good meal. We love that Fonda. The grasshoppers are really tasty. Just like having chips with a bit of chili, lime and salt on them 🤤😀 Thanks so much for watching this video. Cheers, Thomas 😀
Hello this is Temali. You describe food very well you are the best in the world! Love you 🌺❤️ Where can I get your t-shirt? Do you sell them in kids size?
Hi Tema! Lovely to hear from you 😍 so happy you enjoyed this video- it was really fun to film even though it was crazy hectic in meat alley 😆 When we get our merch up and running we’ll definitely make sure there’s a kids size so you can have one 😄 Love you! 😘😘😘
So glad you enjoyed it David! It was a really fun one to film albeit a tad hectic in meat alley 😆 Thanks for watching and commenting mate. Cheers, Sheena
🦗😆 quite tasty with the lime and chilli 😜 gosh I love Oaxaca- it’s my favourite state in Mexico (so far) there’s something really special about it don’t you reckon? Thanks for watching and commenting on this one Michael! 😍 Cheers, Sheena
The food is amazing but what blew me away was the menu. They used the word 'complement'. So pleased to see the Mexicans know their English grammar. I've lost count of the number of times American restaurants use 'compliment' when they mean complement for something that completes the dish. Viva Mexico!!!!
I know right?! I noticed that too 😄 hope you enjoyed this one rotitelor- it was a fun one to film- crazy but fun! Thanks for watching and commenting 😍 Cheers, Sheena
😂 they honestly just taste like crunchy fried stuff- especially when doused in that chilli and lime. Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed the video despite the grasshoppers 😄 Cheers, Sheena
Loving this Mexico series guys! We were wondering were you were off to next. We go Brazil in march and were wondering if u r making your way there at all?
Hi Carl Nicklin, thanks so much- we’re so happy you are enjoying it! We don’t know yet as we’re here for another wee while 😆 Don’t think Brazil is on the cards unfortunately. Would love to get there one day though. Bet you guys are excited about your trip 😍 thanks for watching this one! Hope you guys are having a brilliant weekend! Cheers, Sheena
Thanks for watching and commenting Mike! I’ve always wanted to try huhu grubs but have never had the chance! I’ve always wanted to get to the Hokitika Wild Foods fest to eat them there- one day! Hope you enjoyed this one mate. Cheers, Sheena
Chapulines… I know, eating bugs is a scary thing. Think of small dried and salted shrimp tasting like lemon, freshly cut grass from your lawn and a spicy salsa in a taco. Delicious by itself.
I think it may have been either cotija which is a cow’s milk hard cheese or queso fresco a white cow’s milk fresh cheese 🤔 I’m not 100% sure though Joan sorry! Cheers, Sheena
I remember when i travel to this specific Market to eat . It was so confusing and intimidating not able to speak the language and Lots of people yelling at you to come to their shop. Anyways a nice lady help me out with everything, which I didn’t finish all the meats. I gave the rest of the meats to a old lady passing by.
We totally agree 😂 even after the guys at the stall gave us instructions in English we did it all wrong and got confused 😂 it’s fun though isn’t it? Glad you had a lovely local to help you out! Thanks for watching and commenting, hope this video brought back great memories of your time in Oaxaca! Cheers, Sheena
Hi mate! Great to see you back in the comments 😄 Heading to Michoacan in a few days time so watch our for content from there soon! Thanks for watching this one, hope you enjoy this series. Cheers, Sheena
am surprised that people from all over the world is coming to taste our gastronomy but also our culture it doesn't bother to the contrary makes me feel proud of my country.

It’s such a neat part of the street food culture! Love the customisation 😍
I realize insects are a big protein source for many people...but my stomach will never let me go that far! You are truly an adventurous eater!

Hi it’s Tats! Mexican food is my favourite I’m so jealous you guys are there! I really want to have Horchata when I travel to Mexico one day!🤩
I can't believe you had dorilocos or tosriesquites! 😀😮😃🤗
😍😍😍😍😍 we really enjoyed them! Such a great night time snack those tostiesquites! Thanks for watching and commenting AIDA México, hope you are enjoying our Mexico series so far! Cheers, Sheena
Se me antojó el mole😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋
Mole is such an amazing dish- Thomas loves mole negro and I love coloradito! Thanks for watching and we hope you enjoyed this video! Cheers, Sheena

The best of indigenous food there!!! Thanks for all the "mmmm"'s Sheena...knew it was off the charts yummy. Thanks for taking me along!!!
Thank you for coming along! 😍 it really is such a fascinating food culture in Oaxaca- we love it! Thanks for watching and commenting Jo 😘 Cheers, Sheena
What a great way to cut down on wasteful packaging with that corn chip snack. Love it 😊🙏
Awesome right?! Thanks for watching this episode Susan! Meat alley was crazy to film- such fun! Cheers, Sheena
*_Meat Alley_* - I know it's budget friendly but did $180 MXN include the beer, tortilla and accoutrements?
@Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena
$180 for all that makes me happy! 👍
Frito Pie - And before anyone corrects me, it's corn chips topped with ground beef chilli. Wasn't sure if chilli is popular in NZ...kind of overthinking things. Saturdays in the fall/winter are really long and exhausting due to college football morning to night. West coast games are still in full swing.
*_Have a great rest of the weekend, guys._*
Not as popular as in the US but it's definitely something we sometimes cook at home! Rest up mate and enjoy your Sunday mate! Cheers, Sheena
😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋💯💯💯🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽 Everything you guys showed on video looks so good I'm literally drooling...
😄😄😄😄 me too just thinking about all the food mate! It was all fantastic 🤤 thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena
Se me antojo los Tostitos / tostilocos jeje 😋
They're soooo addictive! Such a great snack. Muchas gracias for watching Erika, hope you enjoyed this video mate. Cheers, Sheena
I like .people from other country love ourexican food. I'm from Mexico city . And I know all food you are eating...noce videos..never stop make those videos.. congratulations, beautiful people....

Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena
Thank you 🙏🏻
OMG l am actually awake when you uploaded (its midnight in Oz).
I am excited to see this!
Yay!! Hope you enjoyed it. It was an absolute ball to film. Oaxaca is such a neat place with so much great food. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Thomas 😀
Hi guys superb video
Thanks for watching and for the very kind words. We’re glad you enjoyed this one. Cheers, Thomas 😀
Nice vlog both of you.👍@sheena you speak quite good Spanish. Do you know how to speak it. Btw are you chinese by origin?
Hi mate! Thanks for watching and commenting! Yep I’m Chinese 😄 I wish I could speak Spanish- we like to learn a little of the local language wherever we travel- enough to order food etc- It’s fun practising with the locals 😆 hope you enjoyed this one! Cheers, Sheena
Wow steering wheel tortilla! Looked really good. I would have to think twice about the grass hoppers....hey i am a whimp! Lol love from Texas! Cheers
Haha it was the best way to describe it 😂 really good meal. We love that Fonda. The grasshoppers are really tasty. Just like having chips with a bit of chili, lime and salt on them 🤤😀 Thanks so much for watching this video. Cheers, Thomas 😀
I'm glad you clarified that the extra ingredient in the horchata was prickly pear. I was convinced you were saying tuna and it was making me ill.
Hahahah it's confusing that prickly pear is also known as tuna! Hope you enjoyed this one Stephen White, thanks for watching mate. Cheers, Sheena
Too much yummm and fun❤
So much fun and yum for one day! We had a ball filming this one. Hope you enjoyed it. Cheers, Thomas 😀
Thanks again Thomas and Sheena.
So glad you enjoyed it David! It was a really fun one to film albeit a tad hectic in meat alley 😆 Thanks for watching and commenting mate. Cheers, Sheena
Oaxacan food is awesome do you guys like huitlacoche?
It’s amazing isn’t it. Such a great food city. We do like huitlacoche. We didn’t film it while in Oaxaca though. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Thomas 😀
23:32 tip: mix it and eat it with the spoon
😄👍
Oaxaca is amazing and you've done it justice! Yes, yes, yes to the lovely foods, but a resounding noooooo to Jiminy Cricket and his familia!
🦗😆 quite tasty with the lime and chilli 😜 gosh I love Oaxaca- it’s my favourite state in Mexico (so far) there’s something really special about it don’t you reckon? Thanks for watching and commenting on this one Michael! 😍 Cheers, Sheena
They are grasshoppers, which grow in corn crops
The food is amazing but what blew me away was the menu. They used the word 'complement'. So pleased to see the Mexicans know their English grammar. I've lost count of the number of times American restaurants use 'compliment' when they mean complement for something that completes the dish. Viva Mexico!!!!
I know right?! I noticed that too 😄 hope you enjoyed this one rotitelor- it was a fun one to film- crazy but fun! Thanks for watching and commenting 😍 Cheers, Sheena
You had me getting hungry...right up to the point you added crickets to your taco. They can’t be all that delicious of a taco topping my dude.
😂 they honestly just taste like crunchy fried stuff- especially when doused in that chilli and lime. Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed the video despite the grasshoppers 😄 Cheers, Sheena
do you know if they make the agua fresca with bottled water or tap water? (since drinking non bottled water in MX is risky)
Hi Papa Bear, thanks for watching and commenting! Bottled water 😄 we didn’t have a problem with water at all in Mexico. Cheers, Sheena
YUM
It was such an epic day of eating Alina Petrea 😍 thanks for watching and commenting- hope you enjoyed this video! Cheers, Sheena
Grasshoppers I no can do - in fact no insects for me ! Did you guys ever try Huhu grubs back home ? Great vid again !
Thanks for watching and commenting Mike! I’ve always wanted to try huhu grubs but have never had the chance! I’ve always wanted to get to the Hokitika Wild Foods fest to eat them there- one day! Hope you enjoyed this one mate. Cheers, Sheena
👍👍👍
Thanks for watching mate! Hope you enjoyed it 😍 Cheers, Sheena
Chapulines… I know, eating bugs is a scary thing. Think of small dried and salted shrimp tasting like lemon, freshly cut grass from your lawn and a spicy salsa in a taco. Delicious by itself.
So delicious! Great description! Cheers, Sheena
cheers guys
Thanks for checking this one out. Hope you enjoyed it! Cheers, Thomas 😀
What is the name of the powdered cheese they sprinkled on?
I think it may have been either cotija which is a cow’s milk hard cheese or queso fresco a white cow’s milk fresh cheese 🤔 I’m not 100% sure though Joan sorry! Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate Probably cotija, as it's a hard, drier cheese. Queso fresco is wetter, and very mild.
Thank you MsKestrela- that makes sense! 😄
Can be Queso De Prensa
Cotija I think
😋👍
Thanks for checking out this one. Hope you enjoyed it! Cheers, Thomas 😀

agua frescas does not translate to "fruit water"
Her vox is very bad 😬
Hi. Not sure what vox is but thanks for watching. Cheers, Thomas
