Bald faced hornet is not a true hornet, but a larger wasp. They in fact hunt yellowjackets as food for their larvae. Have a wonderful teamwork skills when it came to hunting or defending their nest. Ladybug don't care.
Always liked baldfaced hornets. They mostly keep to themselves, they don't ruin picnics in late summer, and most importantly, they hate yellowjackets as much as I do.
@@cholm2070 I was going to say that, I think is one of the other species of these small beetles: I believe they call this one "Lady bird" or something like that.
Some of the "Pink holes" that I've ever encountered, though, weren't worth fighting for! The ones that weren't were just some triflin' women that'd rather mess wit'cha, than give ya the love you deserved! Them's the kinda "Pink holes" I don't either want...or need!!!
Same here! As a kid we came across a nest hanging in a tree. Of course I didn't think there were any hornets in it so I had to test my theory and throw rocks at it. Welp, that was the worst mistake I ever made. Had a swarm of them CHASE ME DOWN!!! Got stung like 8 times while I was running for my life. Lol. The sting from one of those fuckers is way worse than any other bee sting I've ever had.
People like to think that Yellow Jackets stings are painful... which they are. However, I have to agree. Get stung by a Hornet one time, and it's worse than getting stung by a Yellow Jacket three or four times! Hornets, being that they're bigger, have a longer stinger, and more potent venom than a Yellow Jacket. And, if you get stung by an Asian Giant Hornet, those stingers on those Hornets are a quarter of an inch long! Plus, the venom that they inject into their victim feels like being pierced by a white-hot nail, and the poison can kill you within minutes, if not more quickly!
You all are wussies. I had a bald face hornet sting my on my RIGHT EYEBALL 15 second after I finished spreading my older sister's ashes. I'm dead inside anyways so I didn't feel anything, granted, it was hard to feel anything with half of my head swollen up.
Two things are happening--the baldfaced hornets are also attracted to the sap, but if they can catch one of the yellow jackets (Vespula germanica, in this case), they will dismember it and take the muscular thorax back to their nest as food for their larvae.
@@mariafox9226 I suspect V. germanica is a bit too large for D. maculata to capture and overpower. However, I've seen many sclerites of the smaller, native V. maculifrons inside nests of D. maculata I've opened.
Is that what'cha call The Hornet Thug Life? Man, them Yellow Jackets be learning THE HARD WAY not to go messin' all up in them Hornets grill. Gonna get whacked, if they keep on buggin'!!!
I like how the yellowjackets in these videos are always just minding their business eating peacefully, then some bully insect like a paper wasp, white jacket/bald faced hornet or a true hornet comes along and harasses them
Maybe cause they both probably respect the ladybug knowing it’s a non threat and just let it be. My ants on the other hand are sweeping that up quick lol
I had a 10x10 screen tent that the yellow jackets would go in and couldn't get out, stupid things. Bald face hornets would come get me to open the door so they could get in after the yellow jackets. I'd zip it shut and wait for the bald face to come back to the door with his catch and I'd let him out. I even had one that would follow me around and pick off flies or just sit on my knee at he picnic table in the yard. Sometimes I'd see them sitting on the horse backs waiting to ambush flies. Really cool critters that I celebrate having around.
Just do NOT EVER mess with their nest! I learned the hard way. They will become super aggressive and have no trouble hunting you down. Their venom is also in my humble opinion several times more potent than a honeybee or yellowjacket.
Maybe they can't. it's the same case with large mammals. Individuals usually aren't going to risk their lives or limbs trying to take out an opponent as long as they can AVOID conflict. So the smaller animal usually gives up.
Notice that some yellowjackets were brave (or badass) enough to attack the hornets. They face this situation often so they've probably adapted themselves to scare the black wasps (there is no hornet in the vid) away.
Actually they are wasp species. And the bald faced hornet is not a true hornet but indeed a wasp species & if that isn't weird enough. These bald faced hornets are more closely related to the Yellow Jacket species than.anything else.
Had a large tree in my back yard that bald face hornets nested in, I believe they nested inside the tree as I never got a visual on a nest hanging off a branch. Year after year for about 5 years the nest got bigger as there would be thousands swarming the tree. 1 year they just disappeared and haven't nested there since.
I’m sure somebody has already said this but bald face hornets are yellow jackets not real hornets so in actuality it’s yellow jacket versus yellow jacket. I Don’t mean to be real pedantic thanks for the video
Yellow jackets: See human, use numerical advantage to swarm the monster they can't stop, just make angry. Same yellow jackets with one hornet they could kill all day: Get taken out one by one like bad guy's in an 80s karate movie.
I don’t think that those are yellow jackets because they look too big, there is another kind hornet/wasp that looks just like the ones in the video and they are not overly aggressive and are about 1/2 again larger than the yellow jackets. Another thing is that when the bald face hornet started attacking a yellow jacket will put out some sort of pheromone that basically has them attack anything there and that bald face hornet would have been the subject of there new aggression. Yellow jackets are overly aggressive on their own never mind stirring the pot by not sharing whatever they were eating from the tree.

Seems they came not for hunting now, but for tree sap and building materials. And yellowjackets can become annoying fast :)
R bcuz there were a lot of yellow jackets they would have all attacked the hornet
KrotowX I’ve seen yellow jackets as big as Bald faces
@R They go through different feeding cycles. If they were on their protein for the nest cycle they would just grab the yellowjackets to take home.
I've seen one hornet (wasp) invade an entire nest of yellow jackets; next day all yellow jackets were gone.

Mad respect to that ladybug. Also, the hornet seemed to respect that yellow jacket who stayed in his food dish.
Spaceman Spliff. I think because that hornet was actually a male, who has no stinger, so he doesn't want to pick a fight he most likely can't win.
TheShadyHunterTCTD who would thought hornet males don't have a stinger!

They release a foul-smelling liquid when threatened which I believe is poisonous to other bugs, hence why the wasps are leaving that ladybug alone.
