0-60 in 2.6 seconds. The incredible Porsche 991 Turbo S

- A review and test drive of Porsche's 991 model 911 Turbo S. An awesome 550 bhp, nearly 200 mph supercar that can still be used as every day transport. See what it's like to do 0-60 mph in 2.6 seconds.
One of a series of videos from Porsche specialist 911virgin featuring cars from their stock.
Just bought one - don't have a lot of time on it yet, but I think this is the best description I've ever heard of the car.
Glad you liked the video. An incredible car, more so because of the fact it's genuinely every day usable.
I bought one too - arrives next week replacing my 991 C2 3.4 which I just adored. I'm guessing the Turbo will be on a whole new level ...
@@makalu69 Oh yes, very different indeed. Be excited - very excited..... !!
Another brilliant video love your content knowledge and my dream car 991 turbo s
This was honestly an amazing review. Thank you very much.
Thanks for the kind words
Thanks! Yet another great, very comprehensive video.
Thanks for taking the time to watch.
This is the very first video I watch from you, and I've enjoyed it a lot. Very honest review. Keep up the good work, Henry!
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
New to the Channel. Perfectly said in every way. Well done!
Thanks for the kind words
Great car. Thanks for sharing
No worries !
I just picked up a 991.1 Turbo S. Black on black. I can't wait to have fun with her. Excellent video!
Thanks for the kind words. Enjoy the car and watch out for speeding fines !!
Just discovered your channel Henry, expanding my knowledge of the marque with a view to buy maybe at some point. Great content without any fuss, designed for grown ups. Well done.
Glad you like it. Stick around !
Still very much finding our feet so there will be a variety of videos coming up in the future obviously Porsche related !
Great review, what a car!
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
I have a 2018 911 turbo s. Bought new. It is an amazing machine. I love it. And being a Porsche you can beat on it hard and it holds up very well.
They are indeed a truly incredible car
have you tested the 0-60. if so what is it
Nice review of a car that is 7 years old and is still so great. Love the car and as such, I have one.
Such a capable car there isn't really a need to change.
Good review.
Thanks :-)
Great content
Glad you enjoyed it !
Lovely car and a top rewiew of a icon, Always loved the 911 Turbo and Turbo S from any vintage.
I haven't been able to move
on from my manual 2006 turbo that I've owned for just under a decade, has sports cats and exhaust on it. Almost gave it up for a 992 4s ,but changed my mind after the test drive . I might give it up for 991.2 one day when I feel i can't use the clutch and gears. Not bored of the manual 997 turbo yet ,When I am will come and see you again
We had a 996 turbo for 13 years, same argument - it had the oomph and you could chuck it around if you wanted to. The longer you have a car the less depreciation you suffer as well. The same thing with boats !!
Henry would really love to hear you thoughts on the 997 as a video for the future. So much said abut the Gen 1 vs Gen 2's and it would be great to get your expert viewpoint on this topic along with a general run through this generation of 911 which I have personally always loved the look of. My dad is looking to get into one next year and so a little self indulgent in my request !
We've definitely got some 997 content to come. A very significant model and a car we sell plenty of.
worked my arse off last few years im just about to purchase my first porsche turbo 991 (1) . Cannot wait.
You won't be disappointed if you buy a good example.
Love it. The 991 Turbo looks so good in silver.
A very good looking car
brilliant review of the 991 Turbo S. I am a lucky owner of the 992 version, but basically everything holds true, or even improved :)
Thanks for the kind words. They are indeed an incredible car !
Great review thank you. I'm teetering on buying a 991.1 Turbo, I know it will be epic but still trying to justify it to myself (and my wife)
You only live once !!
Fantastic. The 991.1 Turbo S is one of my all time favourite Porsches especially in silver and I say that as a very happy Agate Grey 981 Cayman S with Carrera Classic Wheels owner. 😎
Nice combo on the Cayman :-)
@@911virgin8 Thanks. She turns heads alright. I have named her Erika after a famous German marching song. 😎
Great video Henry, love the car and one day maybe I’ll swap my M5 and go back to a fancy beetle 🤔👍
Thanks for that. You know it makes sense.
Great review. I went for a GT3 as it felt more special as a weekend car, but can really see the huge positives on a 991 turbo, although noise is a bit disappointing
There's no right and wrong with all of these cars. Each have their own appeal. I'll make a video on my current road 911 at some point and it might surprise people....
Your great, please do more Porsche reviews. You should have hundreds of thousands of subscribers. You have a very technical understanding of these cars, similar to Harry's Garage.
Thanks for the kind words, sadly we don't have anything to do with UA-cam's algorithms. Harry is a definitely a yardstick to judge against with a wealth of knowledge at his fingertips.
I'm fortunate enough to have the 991.2 turbo s, had it over 3 years now. Never plan on letting it go, for all the reasons you've mentioned sir. I'm also in my 50s 😂
Glad we both agree !
I have a 2016 991.2 turbo, non S but now with a stage 1 tune, 650bhp & 900nm.
Anyone who claims these cars are sterile or boring either have never driven one .... much less own one
Or in the very least been in one with someone who knows how to drive it properly.
The attributes that the keyboard warriors "identify" as boring, or too sophisticated or too capable and all the other bullshit they spout, in the hands of a pro make this car bend you perception of physics.
These cars are not boring, they are absolutely ballistic & not remotely boring.
Sure they dont have a screaming N/A V10, the rest more thsn makes up for it.
Yes 100% people say fast but boring but haven’t been in one. I know they 997.2 turbo s with Chrono blew my mind from a dig, also faster than my hellcat from a roll.
I am purchasing a 2015 991.1 Turbo next week. What is involved in your Stage 1 tune? The one I am buying has a tuner and Fabspeed X-pipe exhaust system.
@jasonmeyer2261 hi mate so we put an ackropovic exhaust system and simply an ecu tune.
I am not certain which exact tune program was used, I'm in New Zealand and the company I use for tuning all my cars is Eurosurgeon.
So they had the car for 1 day, tune, dyno, tune, road test, dyno, road test & done!
@@jasonmeyer2261 Cobb sells a tune (via the Accessport device) for the 991.x Turbo for around $2500 USD. you just plug it into the ODBII port and 15 mins later you have another 75hp and big lump of ftlbs. i ran this tune on my car for several years. It's fun, but i removed the tune and run it stock now. I promise you, the car does not need more power on the street and unless you are racing, kind of pointless, fun for a while but one thing the Turbo is not, is slow. What is worth every penny is the DCS Sport v3 PASM controller. Serious suspension upgrade and a better spend of money for a 991 in my humble opinion. DCS Sport controller combined with the xpipe exhaust and 4S tires and it will crush any road point A to B. If you "need" a tune, do it as well, but i find it hard exploit on the street. If you do the tune keep an eye on your boost side intake tubes, the extra PSI the tune adds can cause the stock, hot side tubing to leak boost. Next upgrade is the boost side tubing, y-pipe and plenum, then intercoolers, then turbos. seriously avoid the tune and spare yourself the headaches of extend over boost PSI on what is already a silly fast car.
Great cars but looks like any 911...if you need service you get bent hard
Ever since I experienced my mates 997 Turbo at Spa I want one ! It was absolutely brilliant. I drive a Cayman 718S which is a great car but I think a turbo would be a good upgrade. Had a B5 RS4 modified to 500bhp before the Cayman so I miss the power
The Cayman is a very nimble and accurate drive giving good feedback, but ultimately it hasn't got the luxury of a Turbo's abundance of power.
Very good descriptive video , beautiful car I would take one of these over a gt3 .
Loads of torque and the extra refinement would make it my ideal all rounder.
Would have to sell my house first to buy it , that’s the only downside 😵
Many things in life are perfect but for the price tag !
funy how times changed. back in the day when 928 came out all the 911 fans were against it and now 911 became 928 gt lol lovely video.
The 928 was a much more modern car than the 911 back in the day as was the 944. The 911 has evolved into a much more nimble car than the 928 which was a grand tourer in the truest sense. These days the 911 offers different guises depending on your mood.
@@911virgin8 i agree love them all. Well said
What's your opinion on PDCC? I test drove two 991.2 Turbos, one with and one without. Granted, I didnt get a chance to really flog it so I couldn't really tell the difference. I'm looking to buy one as my daily with some light track day duty every year. Thanks.
You will notice PDCC most on track in the transition from one direction to another. In reality PDCC is one of several tools the car is likely to have so narrowing down feel and benefit to one specific technology is a bit hard. The torque vectoring is another tool which pays dividend, again particularly on track. I think its fair to say that most owners probably don't drive their cars hard enough to get 100% benefit out of any of Porsches technologies. Sit in a race car for a few laps and realise how for off the limit you are from even things like the brakes !
I have this on my Turbo - it stays switched off 99% of the time.
I think Henry’s in love ❤️😁!
I'm easy to please.... :-)
Another great review, just a shame that the engine sound doesn’t match the performance, unlike the older blue 911
Turbos never have quite the same exhaust note on acceleration.
Can the rear wheel steering transition quickly enough on a fast switchback or will it be pointing in the tail happy direction?
Oh yes, don't worry Porsche thought about that !!
Rear wheel steer actually helps the car get into the set quicker so the suspension is stabilised. A definite improvement.
I don’t think I’d sell my 996 for a 997 - could be very tempted by one of these though!!!
The 997 is a good looking car. Technologically I'd say there is a bigger jump 997 to 991 than there is 996 to 997.
Considering there is luggage capacity in the rear, this car would be perfect if it has rear access like the McLaren GT instead of one breaking your back trying to feed luggage through the front seats…..??? Sensational vehicle……
Hi Henry, how much with a Carrera S 05 with fully rebuilt engine against this type ? No finance involved. 👍🍻
This sold a long time ago now I'm afraid. Your car definitely has a value.
Enjoyed the video! and also the bin man comment and also being brutalised in the shower comment :-)
Glad you enjoyed it !
"Its like ive been brutalized in the prison showers" lmfaoo im dead
Glad you enjoyed :-)
When will be the last 997 turbo Mezger on the channel?
We will be doing a video on the 997 turbo at some point. I don't think we have touched on the 997 at all yet in our videos so a whole chapter to explore.
I'd like a compare contrast video between a gt3 cup car and a turbo s....
Totally different cars. Ultimately the Turbo S is a quicker car 0-60 but where the cup car takes over is under braking and through the corner. All this is on track of course as the GT3 cup car isn't designed to go on the road. The track also provides a very specific environment. The turbo is everyday usable, comfortable, practical and doesn't require the maintenance of a Cup car which has all the components time life rated.
@@henryf9175 So... which would do better in the other's environment? My guess maybe the turbo s?
@@ferrellmontgomery4703 The cup car would be illegal on the road and woefully impractical but for it's designed purpose it is a beast of a car !
One thing missing on ALL Porsche 911 is that considering the rear seats fold down to gain hand luggage WHY doesn’t the rear window open like the McLaren 570GT to improve access for luggage, instead of breaking your back ..?? THEN it would be perfect ?
Some of the Targas do have opening rear windows.
@@henryf9175 what does that mean …??? The minority purchases that model …..
how do you view the depreciation for the 991.1 turbo S these days?
Let me start by saying I don't have a crystal ball, I wish I did !
I think they are going to be quite stable. They are a good car and the 997 which came before it is holding value well. Ultimately the 991 is a better car if better is the right word.
Starting at 70k now crazy amount of car for the money
@@p1fly got a McLaren 570s instead 6 months ago. No regrets and no going back. Only up from here haha
@@dng992 yes lovely car the 570 quicker I straight line once you get traction, my friend has one, I wouldn't mind one myself.
70k miles on my 2015 991.1 Turbo S, only one minor warranty job in my entire ownership. RELIABLE, fast, and classy.
A brilliant every day car but for weekends I would always go for a GT3 as a more special drive. Only real downside to this technically brilliant car is the rather dull sounding engine. Maybe an aftermarket exhaust would improve this.
The GT3 is certainly more involving and pure. The turbo is addictive when you feel that push in the back.
Age has nothing to do with falling in love with art, good Sir. She's gorgeous and it's okay to say so. Cheers.
It is a good looking backside though.... :-)
@@911virgin8, agreed. It has a better rear end than all of my missing 13 ex-wives. Wait...
Need a 968 review
Missed a chance when we had the 968 Club Sport the other day. They're selling too quickly !!
@@911virgin8 Yeah I just picked up a 94 968 to restore. Such a great car.
@@JVR_Funwithdesign We sold a lovely 944 S2 coupe last week
What happens if you eat Häagen-Dazs ice cream whilst mashing the accelerator in Sport Plus mode?
If its anything but just out of the freezer then you're going to get covered in ice cream !!
How would you compare this to a 991.2 targa 4s?
The pure power of the Turbo S is addictive and it also gets round any loss of energy the 4 wheel drive system might introduce. The roof on the Targa is amazing and they have a loyal following. I'm not going to argue one is better or worse than the other.
Beautiful car... think I prefer a 997 though.... hmmmmm...
We sell a lot of 997 Turbos, definitely a video to come on them in the future
Loved this video. I’m sold on a 991 Turbo S now. I fear though that the days for cars like this are numbered with the increase in EVs.
I still feel that battery powered electric vehicles are a stepping stone rather than the end product but who knows? I see the batteries as creating a massive environmental problem that will end up in the third world but who knows? Obviously the battery weight is also a huge issue. 85 litres of petrol weighs around 65kg, and EV battery is typically 500kg plus. The motor is potentially lighter though.
As I said in the video there is no argument for building cars like this but similarly chocolate and Häagen Dazs ice cream are also impossible to argue for on health / nutritional grounds but the world would be an emptier place without them....
Im sure you are right, but is what powers the car really that important, its just one element of what makes it a great car ?
@@jjefferyworboys8138 I wouldn't pay the same for a quartz wristwatch as I would for a mechanical one. There's something about movement created by beautifully engineered mechanical components that holds a fascination for me.
These beetles are getting too fast!
I'm exploring what you need engine wise to have fun on UK roads at the moment and the results might surprise - but that's for another video....
@@911virgin8 You can have fun with 50bhp!
@@IanPayne Even less than that on 2 wheels or a go-kart
Much as I love cars like this, I can't help feeling that they are getting very silly. Their performance capabilities far exceed the driving abilities of the average owner which is worrying.
You make an interesting point and one that I'm exploring myself with my current road 911. I'll make a video at some point and discuss.....
Funny this; It looks exactly like a Porsche 911 991 Turbo S, but it is clearly a Porch.
Since this is a car guy, he knows what he is talking about.
Strange that I didn't know about this Porch-brand before....
I am assuming you're commenting on my pronunciation of Porsche? Nothing like Porch but there you go. I've long since bothered to care about how others choose to pronounce it and when someone tries to get on their high horse I refer them to Skoda, Hyundai, BMW, Dacia, Renault, Citroen and the plethora of other brands routinely mispronounced from their native origins. I've yet to meet anyone who gets them all right. But well done you if you choose to amaze people at social gatherings by pronouncing Porsche in correct native German dialect.
@@henryf9175
Nope, but I mean that people with UA-cam channels and hundreds of thousands of viewers can have a better standard that using a word meaning something else.
I am not after a perfect pronunciation, but just add the "e", like so many other brits.
Espesially because it is a family name, and not a made up word.
@@Nordmore68 "Porsh" and "Porch" are completely different sounds. At no point did I use the sound "Porch"
Anyway, for causing you such horrific emotional turmoil I will fully refund your subscription fees to our channel. Oh hang on a minute it's free and I don't get paid for making the videos..... 😂
I note that like so many keyboard warriors you haven't made any content yourself on UA-cam. Maybe have a go at contributing to the community and then offer constructive criticism if you're good enough at it to do so.
@@henryf9175
Nevertheless, it is Porsche.
Not very difficult, so you are just being stubborn. ;)
....or this is very important for you, so we'll leave it there. :)
I mean it was constructive criticism, with a little satiric humor, but you did take it quite different than others, I must say.
Have a nice week, and add an "e" every now and then. :)
Just pulled a 2.6 in my ZO6...I didn't have the extra 150k I saved in the car so it didn't slow me down
Really thrilled for you Nick. Just for the benefit of viewers not based in the US Nicholas is referring to a Corvette Z06. Interestingly the only one I could find for sale in the UK was a 2017 car for £92,000. You'd comfortably buy a 991 Turbo S for £90k so I'm not sure where the 150,000 Pounds / Dollars / Euros comes into it. Do Corvette have to give owners $150k to get them to buy the cars, are they that bad? Surely not.
In truth of course cars are so much more than just a 0-60 time. Handling, feedback, interior touch feel and even smell all feature and combine to give the full driving experience.
Variety is the spice of life and its great that different manufacturers take different approaches to car design. If I had to own one car out of a choice of the Z 06 or a 991 turbo S I'd personally go for the Porsche but obviously you think differently Nick and that's cool.
Your zo6 is nothing compared to a 911 turbo and would get waxed all the time by one - not only that your zo6 will depreciate like any car where these porches barely depreciate
@efthimios neither is true actually...before covid you could find them 1/2 price all day, the market is still in bubble land
Fast but boring.
? Maybe a little because its just a good car. Does it all, does not go wrong, looks good, decent enough on fuel, can trot down to Italy without making my ears bleed and mine is a rag top so just lovely in town at the low speeds. If you think its boring please let me know what you got and why its better? thanks
The turbo has a boring side when in relaxed eco mode. Its why you can drive 300 miles on the hwy and get out like it was nothing. but put her in sport plus and ask for some boost and a 991.1 turbo will make your hands sweat on any curvy road. If you feel like thats not enough for your, next turn off the TC and witness the pucker circle on the seat from where you were clinching your butt cheeks.
Please pronounce it RIGHT ! NOT PORSCH or PORSCHA ITS

So not Porsch, not Porscha but P-O-R-S-C-H-E !
How do you pronounce "P-O-R-S-C-H-E !" ?
