  • The last 40-point game Elvin Hayes ever recorded. Yet judging just by this clip you would have figured that the 34-year-old had plenty of those left in him. Thing is that there wasn't much one could do if the jumper was falling for The Big E. Like, he's dropping fade-away bankers over you. Close out too aggressively, and he finishes at the rim. Terrific performance which must have had a pretty darn good field goal percentage, I might add. March 16, 1980.

When the W.Bullets crowd started chanting EEEEEEEEEEEEEE, most of the time The Big E was about to go to work!!!! When he was really rolling, you heard the P.A. go Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

@@thomast8553 Yes indeed Big E was very close to unstoppable when he was hot!! A shame Bobby Dandridge was hurt the Bullets could have went back to back.

i was drawn to this clip after reading about Wes Unseld passing. Even though I was a Knicks fan growing up and loved Clyde and the Pearl, these Bullet teams were great. Archie Clark, The Big E, Unseld, Riordan, Chenier, against Clyde, The Pearl, Reed, Bradley, and Debusshere. I know this clip is a few years later with the Sugar and Cartright days, but still great to see the Big E. I miss those days so much. RIP Wes, you were one of the all-time greats

I love reading about the 60’s and 70’s NBA with so many forgotten players like Bob Pettit, Sam Jones, Elvin Hayes, Earl Monroe, Goodrich, Walter Davis, David Thompson, etc

Man, when his shot was falling, Big E was unstoppable. He made so many turnarounds here, especially the one from left block when he made dropstep to the baseline and quickly turn around and made basket. Nice use of the glass too and he even made stepback jumper.
Thanks a lot for this upload, it's a really rare game. Have you found any new games from 1970s and early 1980s?

@@70sfan I've noticed your Patreon :). Sounds like a plan. Have to get through some of the games I have in my collection, but haven't yet seen. After that we could make something happen.

Elvin is an all-time great. New York won this game, BTW. This Washington Bullets team had been to two consecutive NBA finals, winning the championship in 1978. But in 1980 key players on that team got old all at once. Washington made the playoffs in 1980 but lost in the first round to Philadelphia

Just a way better Lamarus Aldridge and that’s not saying much

That's saying plenty. Aldridge was one of the best PF's in the league for a handful of years. Being way better than that 30 years earlier is great.

What an ignorant thing to say! From 2011-2019ish Lamarcus Aldridge was one of the best power forwards in the NBA! And from 2014-2018 he was the best power forward in the NBA and top 10 player!
