  • The Whitby - Loftus line has to be one of the most scenic railways ever constructed in the UK. Unfortunately, despite the incredible cliff top views of the North Sea, the line was also the least profitable in the country, and so was ultimately closed in 1958.
In the first part of our walk from Whitby to Staithes, where the line has been reopened to serve a quarry, Phil and I stomp from Whitby West Cliff station across the clifftops to Sandsend, before reaching the portal of Sandsend tunnel.
A special thank you to Phil's family, particularly his father for the hospitality, bed for the night. and for picking us up afterwards.
