How to use acrylic paint to pigment epoxy resin to any colour

  • In some of my future projects I'll be using acrylic paint to pigment my epoxy resin, and instead of going over the process in every video I'll just refer back to this one to cover the basics.
    I find that acrylic paints with a smooth, creamy consistency mix best with the resin. The ones I use in this video are by Docrafts (available from The Range in the UK)
    www.docrafts.c...
    I did try some cheaper acrylic paints from a discount store, but they were quite thick in texture and did not mix well.

    Thank you! Not everybody can afford UV resin, so knowing that the paint won't get cooked during the curing puts my mind at ease. I will definitely try this as I have a ton of acrylic paint.

    If you notice the purple doesn’t look anything like the original paint swatch, it looks more blue. If you want to get closer to the paint swatch color you may have to add a little red paint to that purple to bring out the red tones when set.
    I’d love to see Resin Ace try that experiment to see if the color gets any closer to the paint swatch.

I see yours were mixed very well , is it because your acrylic is more liquid? The one I used were not fluid-like

    Okay.. I finally made a rotessarie i put my statue on after i cover with 2 part resin... I let it turn for an hour or so then shut off... resin coats entire unit even now... i also use a lighter to remove air bubbles... Question is i do get some sharp nubs i feel and see all over model... not sure what they are... All i can do is lightly sand with 400 grit to level them then clear coat... If you know what they are or a the solution, it is appreciated... Thanks for all your advise so far...PS both my uv light systems don't work well at curing the 3 different uv resins i have. DecorRom and 2 other china brands i use...they all cure in direct sun light pretty fast... I read something about wave lengths for lights have to match resin... what brand and light do you have best results with.???.. i remember you said you use a 33 watt nail light i think... my nail light said it was 200 watt...and the chamber i made with a small trash can and 100 uv leds, seems very powerfull even gets warm... Thanks again for all your help on resin...

      Mica powder isn't something I ever measure. You only need a pinch in a small amount of resin. My advice is to add a small amount of mica and see how it looks, then you can add a bit more if necessary.

    I keep finding videos of acrylic paint mixed with resin, but I never managed to mix them properly myself.
    Every time, the paint kind of "curdles" in the resin.
    I don't get a homogeneous mix.
    Instead, I get a bunch of tiny precipitated clumps of paint.
    I've tried many different brands of paint before giving up.
    I'm certainly doing something wrong.
    I just don't know what.

    This was very helpful! I have a question, though, can clear resin be turned matte with paint too?

    • @resinAce
      @resinAce  5 місяців тому +1

      If you're referring to the surface finish of resin then that is determined by your mould only. So if you want to create a resin piece with a matte finish then you need a matte mould. If your mould is glossy then your resin cast will always be glossy, regardless of the pigments you add to it.

    • @cherry-kun9783
      @cherry-kun9783 5 місяців тому

      That is so interesting! Excuse if I kep with the questions or being redundant, I just want to have everything clear. So, if I use a matte silicon mould and pour the resin in it, it would come out matte too? is that right? is there matte finish silicon to work with? Thank you for answering to my question!
      @@resinAce

    • @resinAce
      @resinAce  5 місяців тому

      @@cherry-kun9783 Silicone will create an exact replica of your model. So if you model something glossy (like a glass cube) your mould will then produce glossy resin cubes. What you would need to do to create a matte cube is to paint the cube in matte paint before you mould it, then it would produce matte resin cubes. I actually use matte acrylic spray to paint my models if I want my moulds of them to have a matte finish.

    • @resinAce
      @resinAce  4 роки тому

      Hi, acrylic paint generally does not make a great translucent pigment, even a small amount will make your resin opaque. Water-based pigments can only be used in very tiny quantities in epoxy resin, as water is generally a contaminant of resin. For that reason, water-based epoxy pigments are usually very highly concentrated, so you only need one drop to achieve a good depth of colour. I feel you would need to add too much water-based paint to be effective. All you can do is try it and see what happens.

      @resinAce  4 роки тому

      Hi, I know of some great opaque neon pigments here www.resin8.co.uk/opaque-pigment-bundle---neon-10109-p.asp You could also use neon pigment powder, like the pink I used in this video ua-cam.com/video/uSWYga2gnVY/v-deo.html If you can get neon acrylic paint you could try that, but the colours might go a bit darker in the resin

  • @hfranke07
    @hfranke07 4 роки тому

    Again a great video. Thanks a lot. You are such an inspiration to me. Love it. Probleme:
    Is it 4% of pigment of the total amount of resin? Or 4% of pigment added? If the total amount of is 100% resin plus 4% of pigment, you will not end up woth 4% of pigment. (Your example: 10g of resin and 0,4g of pigment. The pigment makes up only 3,84% pigment in the final mix.) If you want to end up with 4% of pigment in your final mix, you will need to make it 9,6g of resin and 0,4g of pigment. This will give you the max ratio of 4% pigment.

    • @resinAce
      @resinAce  4 роки тому +2

      Hi, thank you, it is really not that critical. The technical data sheet for my resin gives the example: If you have 100g resin you add 4g acrylic paint. I have loaded my resin with 10% acrylic paint before now and it still cured fine.

  • @audahdrey
    @audahdrey 3 роки тому

    Hi there, I've tried mixing white acrylic paint to my resin but always ended up with small white flakes that sink to the bottom of the piece, and it makes it look rather messy. Am I adding too much pigment or too little?

    • @resinAce
      @resinAce  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, when I made this video it did not occur to me that not all acrylic paints may be suitable for the process. The one I use is quite low viscosity and very creamy in texture and blends with resin really well. Some thicker brands of acrylic paint, particularly those designed for textured paint effects, may not blend as nicely.

      I think you may see a small amount of light through a very thin layer of resin that's been pigmented with a tiny amount of acrylic paint, but on the whole it seems to have very good light-blocking properties.

    Is there a way to make it see through with color?

      You need to use translucent resin pigment such as the DecorRom pigments that are linked in some of my newer videos

    Hi Ace, I recently started coating my 3d prints with epoxy resin like you use in these molds... the issue i have is the resin seems to get thin almost not coating at all in certain areas ...the next day after i remove dust cover i see this... i do make sure i work it in everywhere on my model and double check...this has happened many times... should i coat the models will something before using resin so resin bonds better.3d prints have tiny lines that the resin boads to... when spray painting i never have issues with paint not bonding well... to day i painted one first with acrylic spray paint and then coated...it seems to work pretty well,but i wont know until tomorrow..any advice is appreciated...with a name resin ace i am sure you understand how to fix this issue...thanks

      Hi, I coat my 3D prints with UV resin, which can then be cured instantly under a UV lamp. I warm it up in hot water to make it more fluid, then paint it on with a small paint brush. You need to keep the piece moving because the resin will naturally flow downwards otherwise. Once the piece has a nice even coat I give it a very quick once over with a lighter flame to pop any surface bubbles, then hit it with the UV lamp to set the resin instantly. With ordinary epoxy resin you will always have problems getting the resin to remain on vertical surfaces, because it just wants to run down. The surface tension of the resin will also make it want to pull into little beads, but this effect will be lessened on a surface that it can get a better grip on. So coating with acrylic spray may give you a better result (particularly if it's matt finish) but it could still get thin on the vertical surfaces if it runs. Another way to keep the coating even is to keep the piece turning on a gadget like a tumbler turner until it's cured, like the one in this video ua-cam.com/video/SonBb5oaCRE/v-deo.html

      @@resinAce Thank you so much...Is this just one part resin..so with uv resin is it as strong and cure as hard as regular table top resin? with a uv flash light work? i have a couple i use to check for ac leaks on car? or do i need a bigger light? also can you apply a second coat using same method right away if you want to? lastly will it look like glass and stay clear as the other resin?I think you saved the day...i was about to order more 2 part resin and keep trying... probably have have 10 or more turn out horrible... junk get stuck in it,bubbles, runs, some areas have nothing... seems to me uv will solve all these issues.. This information made my day... :)

      @@resinAce I watched this video( easy build and makes sense) and i am researching uv resins... i am thinking since i am curing a very thin coat of resin the lamp may not need to be super strong... if you can recommend a lamp and which resin to try that would be great... my statues are 4 inches wide and 10 -12 inches high currently... i may go to 15 high in future... i just can't find any videos on coating 3d prints with uv like you explained... thanks again

      @@roadstar499 I just use UV lamps designed for curing UV nail polish, and they set the resin almost instantly but it can take a while longer before the surface stops being tacky. The stronger the lamp, the less time that takes. If you get much sunlight where you live you can put them out in the sun. I don't have any videos of me coating a 3D print, but I coated a small resin cast in this video ua-cam.com/video/P6Mxee0g8xs/v-deo.html and the process is just the same.
