A disassembled stone steam locomotive commemorates a New York Central engineer who saved his passengers and crew from a head-on collision with another train at York, Ind., on July 27, 1887. ''Gale Cramer told his crew to jump, then stayed on board because in those days, once the engineer jumped off, the brake would release again, making it even worse for the passengers,'' recounts Holstrom. ''He was the only fatality in the train wreck.'' Passengers, grateful for Cramer`s act of heroism, raised the funds to pay for the monument.
Actually Big Jim and Johnny Torrio were members of the same gang. Torrio wanted the outfit to branch into bootlegging which Colosimo refused which is why he was gunned down. When Torrio took over, he too survived an assassination attempt and moved to New York City whereby Al Capone took over the South Side syndicate. - Wikipedia
Love it big Jim was my great grandfather's brother my grandoa is jim colosimo andmy fathwr is jim colosimo i havw pixtures of our family farm in hurley wi
Big Jim was my great-great-grandfather! Fun fact: It was actually pronounced Col-o-si-mo originally and then his family changed the pronunciation so they would not be associated with his crimes. They changed it to Co-los-imo. I would like to visit this someday!
I enjoyed reading your comment very much thank you for sharing that with us. That is pretty interesting. My brother is really into the gangster stuff and the last name change is pretty interesting. I wonder if he knew about that. I appreciate you taking the time to leave your comment. I enjoyed reading it very much. You should definitely go check it out in person. It’s pretty cool for a cemetery.
Perhaps not the most family orientated video at the holiday season but nonetheless very interesting. If it's anything like pictures I've seen you can imagine all the hype and the who's who of Chicagoland crime attending the funeral and the Acres of flowers that were used in floral arrangements. I had never heard about the engineer who had that odd tombstone to honor him for his sacrifice. Quite the detail work and you can also tell he was a proud Masonic member. Something to put on my list to see but I'll wait till spring time
