If you're an Overwatch player, smurfing is (in all likelihood) a subject you have discussed a number of times. Everyone has their own take on how troublesome they think the smurfing problem really is with some people downplaying their hard carry potential while others highlight the boosting problem that comes as a side effect of this issue.
Now, getting boosted in Overwatch is a problem, but with Blizzard having released heroes that pretty much do the boosting for you anyway- Is it really that big a deal?
To take a closer look at Overwatch Smurfing in 2021 I took it upon myself to level a brand new account and quickly found out that Blizzard does have means and ways of combating this issue, just not ones that I had anticipated..

That Reinhardt has some serious main tank trauma. They've likely been let down by their team more times than they can count and have absolutely no trust left that if they push forward their team will keep up and follow them. It's super sad, you hate to see it.

Im a big fan of the "educational" unranked to gm series that spends the first 15 or so matches just bullying the enemy team while basically having no commentary applicable to that rank. Like at least try to demonstrate common mistakes made at that level.

Trust me they’re pain in every rank from bronze to Masters , the higher you go the less there are but the more devastating they are , the guy smurfing in bronze will be gold saying he’s top500 while the guy smurfing in masters will be the 4.3 flex player

Smurfs ruin the game either way at the end of the day. Eithers its so low an elo that they can whatever and win, totally shitting on other team and making their gaming experiance hell. Or they are doing it to play some super off meta hero and end up throwing the game in a higher elo. Only they don't give a shit that they lost, because its isn't their main. Blizzards refusual to even try and deal with the problem is the main reason i won't play competitive anymore.

I personally like to play with smurfs because I like to see how far I'm behind and if I actually deserve the rank above me but if it's a GM playing in a silver lobby I absolutely hate it.
True. If its a diamond in a plat lobby or a plat in a gold lobby, hell even a diamond in a gold lobby, its easily manageable. You can outplay them if you stay calm, but when its a GM in a silver lobby then soemthing is wrong with the smurf
I think one of the funniest things that have happened to me with smurfs was on Rialto defence. For the first point the enemy smurf dps was dominating us on Widow, every time they killed someone they'd type 'sit', 'lol' etc. they bragged about having 8 other accounts doing the same. Well my team had a smurf who was just vibing on genji but they reached their break point, swapped to widow and destroyed the enemy smurf. Who immediately started calling hacking and cheats on our smurf. I've never seen someone's ego get smashed so quickly.
I wasn't properly smurfing that day, but I have a similar story.
It was June 22 of this year, the day of my big exam, which took 4 hours of my afternoon. When I came back home, I was understandably pretty tired, but decided to play some Overwatch with my console friends (or rather my one console friend who still plays often to this day). I decided to play Genji, because my second highest play time is with him, so I can kinda just let my autopilot do the work, and dps is my weakest role, so I'm not expected to do that much anyway. When the match started, I hadn't yet noticed that both enemy dps were around level 20, which usually means a smurf account, in my games. Apparently the two smurfs hadn't planned on going easy and relaxing as I did. One of them picked Widow, and the other was Tracer. The Widow was decent and hitting some shots, but when my friend took the Widow duel to him, the smurf got shut down pretty quickly (my friend has pretty average gamesense, but he probably has the mechanics to be masters). The Tracer however, seemed to not give a damn about anyone except our healers, constantly flanking all the way around to pick them off. As someone who plays a lot more support nowadays, I wouldn't let that slide, and I decided to hunt that Tracer down. She got so utterly annihilated for a good minute that she decided to swap to Echo, and abuse a truly broken character to avoid being completely useless. However, once you have truly pissed me off, there is no going back.
TL;DR We got rolled for 2 minutes by a Tracer smurf until I went god mode and we won in like a minute and a half

I've started playing on PC and it started my DPS in silver. Not unfair, given I'm trash with a mouse, but the only games I seem to win are the ones where I give up entirely. I feel as though the teams win just to spite me.

It seems a lot of my tanks think they are playing a whole other passive role. I keep wondering when my tanks will tank.. it’s actually unbelievable. I’m not pissed just surprised so many games I have like this and it makes support queued games hard for me on attack.
Allow me to explain why smurfing is detrimental.
As detailed in this video, the MMR system quickly fixes placement. The problem comes in when people start realizing this. High level players begin throwing games consecutively to get into a lower elo. And with how unbalanced the elo system is, there begins a problem.
Let's say Player A decided to smurf, and decided to play at lower levels. Player A would throw games and get placed into a low elo. Player A would then begin sweating in low elo lobbies, decimating everyone. When Player A would get to a high elo, they'd begin throwing again, then rinse and repeat.
Additionally, I would put the guy making this video in blame as...
1. OW is a skill based game, when you sweat in lower elos, people begin struggling against you and it lowers enemy morale. This offers no benefit to enemy teams, and the argument "well get better" or "skill issue" are fucking ignorant.
2. The person making the video tilted the scale in one side, and as a result, the skill gap was increased.
All in all, don't smurf. It may seem harmless but can have a significant negative effect on enemy players. I've had many friends quit OW because of excessive smurfs. They were unable to continue playing due to continuously dying to a hanzo smurf who stomped on everyone.

Recently i found out why we have diamond borders playing like bronzes, you used to be able to set up idle xp farms with custom games back in the day, nowadays you might notice that you get this little "not xp recieved from this match" message when playing a custom gamemode, this is because people used to exploit this system and get silver borders in a month lol

I have seen many platinum bordered players and it’s honestly surprising to see them in low elo or even quick play and when they aren’t really good. Personally I would quit unless I saw or looked for improvement…

To smurf, you need to actively keep your mmr low. One thing people in this game absolutely hate to admit, is the mmr system actually works pretty well.
Not for me. I have huge win and lose streaks. Either I really play that inconsistent or smth doesn't work so good. Hit low masters 2 times and high masters Once and dropped to low gold within 2 months of loosing only to get back to mid-high diamond again. And even now its pretty normal for me to go 400sr up and down casually. Solo q as support is pain.
I have been getting that exact same disconnecting issue the last few days but when I've been playing competitive.
It just out of nowhere kicks me from the game, I don't think its my internet as I am still in the lobby, able to open loot boxes and even able to still see match chat. So I just sit there spamming the rejoin match button until it finally decided to let me back in. I am sure it is an issue with the overwatch servers.
That part with the server connection being automated, I really felt that. Philippine ISPs already sucked routing to the Singapore servers that were closest to "native" I could get. Now I sometimes end up in Korean servers where my ping is a lot worse (and I already had 90 to 150 before) and far more unstable.
Least I can't understand the toxic chat, though.
you can block the korean servers so you will not be connected to them. i used to get connected to those as well, so I blocked them out. now i can play peacefully in singapore gsg1 servers

Funny enough, I really do just vibe in the game now and I'm technically a smurf. On all my accounts I'm either gold or below and Lucioball is my only tryhard game (3300 or higher).
My ranked when I sweat was 2900+ in reg comp on DPS. Roughly the same for tank/supp.
I now just chill with friends in comp and they're typically much lower than I... some times I have to hop on another account to do so. I do still want wins, but I also don't give a fuck if I lose unless it's Lucioball.

People being focused on you because you are smurfing or they think you are is really good I believe because they waste cool downs, ultimates and they get tunnel vision for you. To the point where they are throwing..

5:21 It's simply painful to see someone pay 10 dollars (or some owl tokens) AND buy a golden gun for a character they don't know how to play.
Like, I just find the idea of imagining this rein so sad. He's plat border (and plays a lot of rein, hence the skin and golden hammer), and still doesn't know that with this playstyle, youre essentially useless. You cannot win unless you get absolutely carried by a dps (or zen hehe) or when you get a free shatter after 4 minutes of passive ult charge.

I ran into a duo in quick play the other day who were level grinding for comp. One called '"ImBronzeLikeYouLol" and the other "ImSilverLikeYouLol". I was legit pissed off just for the peoples whose games they were planning to ruin. Especially if they have to throw a lot of games to get down to those ranks.
People with those kinds of names are usually the opposite of what they are.

Thing is cliff winning a game like this one would boost a player like that god awful Rein to places they NEVER should have gotten to playing the way they do. That's the bigger side effect of smurfs, they are actively dismantling the ladder to the point that people actually don't belong at certain ranks. That Rein shouldn't be anywhere above mid silver but getting carried to victories likely gave him the impression that his playstyle is acceptable above where he actually should be and there's no changing him due to his playtime.

I mean ur definitely right, but statistically speaking they're likely to lose their next game. Theres also a possible 6 smurfs on the enemy team but only 5 on theirs because they're clearly not a smurf.
@@BagelBoi4000 the problem is more that they will never learn to improve their gameplay because of the back and forth caused by smurfs. Under normal circumstances that rein would nosedive to bronze and then would be forced to learn in they want to climb. Sadly the ladder were have now is littered with similar players like this rein who simply will never know better and won't be interested in changing.

I admit, I've had some pretty stupid smallbrain tank moments so I can kinda feel this Rein but at the same time he was still being pretty stupid for a guy with a plat portrait. Panicking and wondering where the healers are usually what contributes to my fuck ups as a tank main. One day I'll get over it and learn but I'm only lvl 121 and am afraid to even touch competitive as a result. Ugh...

Kuneho is not the worst kind of Reinhardt player, to say the least. It's much worse to play with the Reinhardt who doesn't know the concept of tactical retreat at all. This particular kind is, probably, just used to play with two main healers + Zarya.
My duo queue partner has 1206 hours on Reinhardt practically exclusively.

I had a rein that didn't understand LOS and how useful retreating and resetting is. Damn I got really salty after the game, because he was trashtalking us the healers when we couldn't do much since he was playing so bad and we didn't get any protection against a doom genji winston and hog combo.
That's why people can't have fun on this game. It puts players in such a disadvantage that's it even funny.

smurfing sucks, but man does it feel good to smack them down and win. I had a super smurfy genji in one of my low gold elo games and i just started sticking with my supports on rein and smacking tf outta him when he tried to dive in. even pinned him out of nano blade twice. i tried to smack talk him after but he insta quit when the game was over XD
Hopefully kuneho watches this, sees how shit they are and improves. How somebody could get a plat border being that terrible is something I'll never understand

The platinum/diamond border players are often worse than new players. They've been playing since 2016, so they play Reinhardt like a shield bot and then pray that their team makes something happen. They play the game of Overwatch like it's still 2016. But a brand new player? They see the game for what it is, because they have no preconceptions or old habits. I'm not sure if this person is a Rein main or if they were just flex queuing. But players like him are the reason I bound "push forward" to my communications wheel.

there are enough masters players that can't do that
There are golds (support mains mostly) that can roughly do that and just dont have the mechanics to instantly pop you

@@danielnelga646 well yeah, tracer mechanics probably improve more between gold and plat than support mechanics so their movement becomes less easy to aim at, regardless of if support players all know where their recall goes.

Smurfing isn’t probably much of a problem on PC maybe aimbotters and hacking smurfs but it’s such a big problem on console especially since they can just continuously make a new account lol.

I think if you're on console you can opt out of crossplay and never have to deal with it

If you play comp on console you get no PC players. Only crossplay between PC and console is in non-purple modes. Most of the effect of crossplay is putting the different console populations together.

I tried to play cross play with some friends. The console players couldn’t compete whatsoever without aim assist and it wasn’t fun. We’re just not going to play overwatch lol

@@CliffTerios that I cannot agree with, a melee character in a game where almost all of the roster uses range can easily get outplayed. Now she just dies cuz her shield is useless and her hitbox is massive…

@@Otaar21 brig is currently in a pretty balanced state id say, the games actually fairly balanced all round id say. Some exeptions in the dps category and a few buffs id like to see but other than that not bad.
@@BagelBoi4000 brig is really weak, she's got a shield that's useless and not enough hp to survive anything worthy of the huge hitbox. The game is all about dps right now, always a crapload of damage and unfair mechanics
