  • A new planned rail customer will locate at the end of the currently out of use Armory Branch line in East Longmeadow, MA and reactivate the line for their shipments. The line is intact but needs rehabilitation right up the the CT/MA state line where this customer plans to locate on the MA side. The customer will be a transfer station and will ship out construction and demolition debris material for disposal out of state. Central New England Railroad will serve the facility once both the line and transfer station are complete. This video focuses on the customer and facility itself as far as its location as well as some examples of what the building will look like. For more information about the line restoration itself click below:

    Great news. I grew up a few miles from here and saw a lot of business come and go since the 1950s. Much of it didn't go to trucks - it shut down or moved away.

    I support bringing back the railroads for various reasons. A major one is because in my lifetime, gasoline and diesel prices have exceeded $4.00 and $5.00 per gallon three times. Freight trains have a higher hauling capacity than automobiles and trucks.
    I believe for the long haul transports railroads have their application and places to go just that. I also support retaining the truck industry for medium and short distance transports. The key is to have a balance of the two.

  • @murfess
    @murfess Рік тому

    If the line is extending all the way into East Longmeadow, why not just connect the line to the CSOR line to the west? It's only a few miles away.

    • @SouthCoastRailVideos
      @SouthCoastRailVideos  Рік тому

      That is completely unnecessary and cost prohibitive. The line could be reconnected to the B&A in the future though.

  • @grommit700
    @grommit700 Рік тому

    As someone who still lives in Connecticut, I can see freight customers using this line. The state is making the effort to bring businesses in.
    However, any support to reactivate this line may face opposition from truckers who don't want to see their jobs or businesses in jeopardy.

    • @AidenSexsmith
      @AidenSexsmith Рік тому +1

      The truckers are needed, however, when they rebuild 84, the railroads will need to help out. I'd love to see commuter rail from Waterbury to Hartford, east to Vernon and Willimantic.The state owns the right of way, so P&W, NEC and CSO could use it for freight (Hartford -Willimantic).
      I hope Longmeadow will restore rail to the junction on the B&A.

    • @grommit700
      @grommit700 Рік тому

      @@AidenSexsmith I agree. Trucks are needed too. The key is having the right balance of the two. I'd like to see open properties nextdoor to these rail lines be converted to mini intermodal processing yards where commerce and freight can be off loaded to trucks. This way truckers don't have to be far from home and have more labor rights via contracts or unions, and that highways will be relieved of some congestion.
      I'd also like to see Hartford union station be rebuilt or finished to accommodate two tracks. The general infrastructure is already there. This will eliminate the bottle neck there.
      I am not sure that either the railroad or 84 should be put underground (as some plans call for). The reason is because both the NYC subway east side expansion and Boston's Big Dig prove that putting anything underground takes too much time and money. It will be an inconvenience and traffic jam when the highway above Hartford union station is rebuilt, but the alternative is to go through another Big Dig like Boston did.

    • @countrypaul
      @countrypaul Рік тому +1

      @@grommit700 - I think the whole underground rebuild idea is a boondoggle. As you say, restore the second track through Hartford and allow the area around the station to redevelop. Re: Waterbury Hartford commuting, great idea but the shortest line through Newington has been usurped by the busway, and while I can see commuter rail going to Mancherster (I rode a demonstration special on that line 45 years ago), to get it to Vernon would involve removing a popular rail trail. You can hear the Rails-to-Trails lobby (because that's what they really are) howling from here.

    • @grommit700
      @grommit700 Рік тому

      @@countrypaul yeah rails to trails is very popular in Connecticut. I know part of the line from Hartford to Vernon is legitimately used by freight. I don't see a passenger train going back that route.
      I'm surprised they are fixing up the like that goes off of that up to East Long Meadow, Massachusetts. Maybe there is incoming business that can reuse those rails again. I almost wonder if having a trolley would be a good idea because to put a full locomotive into service requires a lot of work (I presume). Trolleys would be a fraction of the price to operate, but the main question remains. Is there enough demand to put any passenger or freight service back on to those lines?

    In general though, a railroad can be used by both freight and passenger service. If that's how this nation was created and operated by 100 years ago, then I don't see why there so much resistance to bring this back.
    Connecticut also has become sketchy with winter weather. It's become very inconsistent. Freezing rain and troublesome snow are disaster recipes for all road vehicles. That's what I like about trains. A little ice and little snow won't necessarily derail a multi ton locomotive.
    I believe once residents try out passenger service on CT rail, they will appreciate railroads more. I know I do.

    I've been watching this track for about 3 years now and noticed that there are stockpiles of concrete ties further south and a short section about 3 miles to the south where they have been installed. The scantic or armory line has been rebuilding for, it seems, 10 plus years, maybe more. It was one of the five rail lines built to serve the armory in springfield. Hartford was/is the end of the navigable river, so the rest of the journey for guns or parts was by land. (Geo Washington's idea, brit navy couldnt be used to take our guns) After the Armory was closed in 68 the death knell for the armory line rang. But industries are returning and rail usage is way higher than in last few decades.
