Yeah, I loved that part of the reaction. Because it was me when I first watched this show. I felt like the whole season was leading up to this moment. I had felt that going back to some of the first few episodes of this season, maybe even as early as Season 1. To have him in the perfect position to help Team Avatar and join them was exactly what I was hoping for. To have him then help his awful, evil, manipulative sister instead was a gut punch. And I wouldn't have it any other way. But I was still pissed at Zuko until we finally got Season 3.
He was so hopeful at several moments, only for the narrative to crush his hopes every time. Personally I love the moment when he thinks the Avatar State will decide the battle. Psych!
I had heard for years about Zuko's redemption arc so of course I was expecting it here. Looking back though, this was a necessary part of the arc. His development through Season 3 is phenomenal.
The most heartbreaking moment in the season finale is not only aang getting shot but katara holding him in tears in defeat. If Iroh hadn’t jumped in, both she and aang would have died. The look on her face is so heartbreaking. Gives me chills every time. And then Iroh jumping in. Ugh so much in those few scenes and it hurts A LOT.
Ryse better than waterbenders. The only way to hold a talented waterbender is to kill them. After all, if they can cut steel and bend their own spit or sweat or piss, they can break out of basically anything.
Fun fact, the Dai Li were created by Avatar Kyoshi back when the Earth Kingdom had a massive peasant uprising. As a result they wanted the old kingdom destroyed and a new one to replace it, as a result began to start mass destruction. As a result Avatar Kyoshi created them as a police force that were meant to protect the Earth Kingdom and Keep the Cultural Heritage from being detroyed or compromised. The Dai Li Lasted even after Avatar Koshi's death and would later become so corrupt that they lost their own purpose and helped take down the every thing they were created to protect.
"In the avatar state you are at you're most powerful, but you are also at you're most vulnerable." -Roku. He was in the avatar state but Azula shot him with lightning which killed him, but Aang was brought back by the spirit water by katara
Im glad you notcied that if katara used the spirit water on zuko, she couldn't have been able to save aang. Then again, if she used it on zuko maybe zuko wouldn't have turn his back on iroh, and maybe he would've helped aang and katara to fight azula. Who knows
Then he would've joined team avatar and would've not attended the important war meeting (I'm sure shredder doesn't see this, but if he does then... oops..) and wouldn't have known about the plan that ozai had. Which would be really bad.
n0nxme Actually, zuko was the one who accidentally helped give him and azula the idea in the first place, so he might have not even came up with that plan
If she used it on Zuko, Zuko wouldn't join the Gaang. It wasn't his scar that he wanted to get rid of. It was his father's love and acceptance that he wanted. Katara healing his scar wouldn't really change the fact that he would still side with Azula.
“You know they’re not gonna kill him off there’s another season” Bruh there was like a year between this episode and season 3 ep 1. Aang straight up died my dude. And we had no clue if he was coming back.
Just realized that Zuko's dream of two dragons talking to him about his destiny foreshadows him choosing between Azula's and Iroh's advice in the crystal catacombs.
But i also think that because of years of being able to know for sure if person is telling the truth, she must be pretty good at hearing the person is lying too. Pretty much like if we see the steam going over the water, we don't have to touch the water, to know it's hot.
He doesn't hear through earth, but through the vibrations. And vibrations probably also get transferred through Appa's body, so she should be able to tell if someone, who's on Appa, is lying
ARN She can only tell those vibrations through Earthbending and Oppa isn’t Earth so the vibrations can’t be felt, well really, she can’t use her Earthbending to feel them. This is also why she is completely blind on Oppa.
Corey Gazit I always thought of that as a plot hole cause it’s just a cartoon but then I realized that maybe since she can see the general outline of the person’s body and her own body, she can guess what technique they did and about where the rock will hit her. That’s all I have that makes sense for why she can act on something she can’t see. Edit: When we first are introduced to her, she dodged a rock and how her eyes were and her lack of a reaction , she couldn’t see it which proves that she can’t see them in the air.
Iroh: Did I ever tell you how I got the nickname "The dragon of the west?" Azula: I'm not interested in a lengthy anecdote uncle. Iroh: It's more of a demonstration really... - Proceeds to sip from his tea before he actually begins to spit fire like a dragon.- Iroh of the Firenation, the most bad ass character of the series.
Here's how I see it: Zuko's idea of "honor" and acceptance from his father is his addiction. It's never easy to quit an addiction. This episode was kind of like his relapse.. You *think* he's going in the right direction then *BAM* , he goes back to his old ways. It's a pretty realistic route for his character :)
Seeking parental approval is something far more tragic, and endemic to the human condition than substance dependance, or an unhealthy habit. Your comparison cheapens Zuko's story, and it's not even an original opinion, since I'm pretty sure you're parroting what Nostalgia Critic said.
Imagine seeing this episode when you're like 10 years old, and you don't yet fully understand the classic three-act structure well enough to know what season 3 will bring. And then imagine having to wait 9 1/2 months for season 3 to come out.
I was so afraid they cancelled it when it took so long for season 3 to come out. I hated this season finale back 5en, but now it’s one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen
i remember crying my eyes out for DAYS over this season finale - and i didn’t get my hands on season 3 for MONTHS. i was in anguish, i couldn’t even look at anything avatar related without deflating.
I love Azula. She's such a competent villain that's always making calculations and walking the best path for her game. She's not afraid to both make commands and get her hands dirty. And her quotes? Oh my lord. He introduction to Book 2 was amazing about if the tides control the ship, and now this episode. "Don't flatter yourself! You were never even a player." Gives me chills every time. She's probably my favorite character in the entire series.
Bumi: "I'm the greatest Earth Bender you'll ever see!" Toph: Waves hand in front of face, "Good thing I'm blind!" Also there comes a time in every man's life when he has to face his giant space self in the sky and make the decision to lock his own chakra.
I definitely consider them equals, and their accomplishments are incredible. One invents a new bending extension, another conquers an entire city by himself.
well you can't expect to be asked to throw something positive away .-. he probably thought it meant hard training, going to his limits and a test of will power or something and was ready to give it his all,not lose the person he loves.
When Azula and Iroh are on different sides talking to him it also takes you back to Zuko's dreams (two episodes before) where the two dragons are telling him different things. The blue one having Azula's voice and the red one having Iroh's!
The animation when Katara tries to save Aang is the same look when Katara finds Aang in the iceberg in episode 1. It is amazing that Toph learns metalbending, and it is another sub bending to earth ending. The scene when Iroh escapes is awesome. Excited for next season!
It makes complete sense that in order to control this great power he has to be willing to do it not in the name of his earthly attachments. Note that every time he entered the Avatar State in book 2 was for an earthly attachment, that being Katara or Appa.
excellent point. Avatars can still love, but the nature of their attachment should not impede their primary functions/roles. I didn’t understand that the first time I watched.
This is the GIGANTIC difference between the philosophy of an Avatar and the one of, say, a jedi. Jedis fucked up BIG TIME on their message of "you shouldn't feel any fear at 8 years old, give a fuck about your enslaved/dead mom or express any feelings of grief, need for human connection, attachment or empathy to anybody. Or you'll become Evil for sure" 👍🏻. Just sayin.
@@antarath517 that's ironic cause literally the only reason he did it in the crystal cave was to save katara AGAIN. because there were too many enemies (he even said it ).
"You can't attack the protagonist when they are powering up" loool that was funny. But from Azula's standpoint that was pretty smart, not waiting for the protagonist to gain all the power.
I love seeing people getting into the show. They go from this is great to so amazing that they are speechless and they dont know what to say cause it unbelieveble amazing
15:05 Regarding what you said, when Aang says he "completely masted the Avatar state heH heH" Toph actually doesn't know he's lying! She can only tell from vibrations through the earth but she's on a fluff cloud lmao
I am by no means a specialist but I have read an explanation somewhere about Aang letting go of Katara. Basically, it is a cultural mistranslation. It *doesn't* mean he'd have to give up loving her and become cold or indifferent to her. In that culture, it means he could still continue loving her as much as he wishes, BUT that she can't be the MOST important thing to him. For example, he'd have to choose saving a city full of people from disaster or prevent a war even if it meant she'd die. In other words, his avatar duties to the balance of the world must be the most important thing to him and everything else must come after that. When he was "letting go of her" in the fight against Azula and Zuko, he wasn't "stopping his love" or anything, it was the act that he shielded himself to get into the avatar state in order to defend the world balance INSTEAD of helping her while she was defending herself with the water tentacles that signified he "let go". Not let go of his attachment, but *moved* the attachment away from being the MOST important thing to him, even if he didn't want to.
I've heard people say this before and I can see the logic but why then, didn't the Guru just explain that to Aang? Let me give you an example. In an issue of "Batman," Robin (Tim Drake) asks Batman if he can check on his girlfriend to make sure she's all right. Batman says okay but reminds him he's sworn to protect the entire city, not just one person. I see no reason why the Guru couldn't do something similar here.
Zukos choice makes sense tho. He spent 3 years chasing the avatar and getting no where and then he’s told he’ll have everything back by the end of the day. That easy.
Exactly, that’s literally his kryptonite. I don’t understand how so many reactors had faith in Zuko during this scene? When I was little watching this I predicted he would attack Aang so I’m surprised watching these reactions. He was only “good” for a few days compared to years
i mean, everyone’s been told about zuko’s awesome redemption arc, so they know it has to happen at some point; it’s not too surprising that people tend to expect it here
@@Jna01615 I think the reason people believed he had finally let go was because he had. he had literally given up on chasing Aang, had finally tried to have his own life,he even mentions towards katara that he HAS REALIZED that he can be his own person and doesn't need to be defined by the scar. the only problem is..the reason he was gonna accept this fate was because he was sure there was no chance of him ever getting his honor back so he was ready to let it go...but then azula offers him everything he ever wanted and he doesn't have to let anything go... honestly I get why he accepted but at the same time he should've known it's not what he needs/wants deep down. because he knew his father,he knew his father is a giant ---------- ------------- ,I mean wasn't the scar hint enough of an abusive parent? and he learned how loving a family could be from his mom and iroh.so really I feel like he has some "I need to be accepted by this person no matter what" issue more than anything else. and oh surprise, acceptance didn't change the whole personality of his dad,who would've thought. really zuko use your brain, you're not that dumb, even though you were the one without talent =_=
2:00 “That almost seems a little too jarring” Gee, I wonder why? I mean the whole setup and even the voice acting were to show how unnatural it is for Zuko to act like that which also foreshadows his final choice in the end
About "letting go of his attachment to Katara", I think a lot of people confuse "love" and "attachment". you can perfectly love someone without having to be fixed at the hip and being constantly afraid of losing that person. Like everything in this show, it is about balance: you should be able to love someone (which is very healthy) while also being able to let go and let this person and yourself live on your own sometimes, without being afraid of losing each other. That's what I think they are trying to tell us here :)
I've heard people say this before and I can see the logic but why then, didn't the Guru just explain that to Aang? Let me give you an example. Azula is so manipulative she plans each step out carefully and she said exactly what Zuko wanted to hear. That’s why she is an amazing villain, she is smart calculative and thinks outside the box. ( Also can I just say the music for whenever Azula is on screen is amazing, it adds to the tone and helps you realise how much of a psychopath she actually is.)

I love how in the first episode he was like "idk I have some high expectations from what everyone has been telling me" and now he gets so hyped, I love it, it really is a very special show.
The attachment chakra is about respecting her choices in life. Aang has a problem with choosing his own desires over other's. Example Bato of the water tribe.
Well, he was as you said, powering up. He was trying to master it by letting go of Katara and opening the last chakra which doesn't happen instantly. So in that time he was entering the avatar state, he got hit with the lightning. There was no air vortex to protect him or anything like that yet.
@@maxim196 Ya honestly, everytime I see her I imagine her as 17/18, like 14 doesn't even make sense. A 14 yr old doesn't even have that mental capacity. I think the creators just made her young so she fits in within the age limits of the rest of the young characters.
He even gave up his search for the Avatar for a little while-not because he realized it was wrong, but because he realized it was hopeless. To side with Aang would be not only to acknowledge that the war was unjust and the Fire Nation the oppressor, but it would also be to actively fight against his own nation. And implicitly, it would mean acknowledging the truth that Ozai didn’t and would never want him back. He wouldn’t have admitted at that point that Ozai would never love or accept him and preferred him dead. This is Zuko’s chance to go home to get what he always wanted: Ozai’s approval. He has a chance at success here, and the only thing standing against this decision is Iroh. Katara’s kindness doesn’t mean much here; it’s a brief moment in which they each believe they’ve lost everything. When Zuko finds out he hasn’t, why on earth would Katara being kind to him mean anything? He could go home. An end to three years of exile, acceptance from Ozai, a return to his rightful position as heir to the throne and luxury that entails. All Iroh can offer is the potential of a return to serving tea. Zuko was reasonably happy doing that, but he was happy doing that in the belief that he couldn’t return home.

I never suffered so much waiting for anything.
I can remember how brutal it was
For real it was hell. - after waiting for 8 months I was worried the curse had struck me again. You know the curse that says: "If you like a show, it will be canceled." Season 3 was a very pleasant surprise when it dropped on me.

Shredder was so hurt !! 😂
@@Michaelangelo591 I was hurt too
He was so hopeful at several moments, only for the narrative to crush his hopes every time.

"Doesn't the avatar state have a defense mechanism or something?" As an added point, the Avatar State IS the defense mechanism itself for the Avatar.
The reason it cant defend, is because no past life knew how to redirect lightning i would geuss... and hes also just powering up
@@-gemberkoekje-5547 Also he was calling the power himself after having locked it. The other Avatar's couldn't react.
Well the thing is she attacked him from behind. The Avatar State doesn’t give him extra eyes on his back ya know
I think it was Aang doing his own thing first. That’s why the avatar state didn’t react in time...
Personally I don't think he ever fully activated it. He was in the process when it was rudely interrupted. And he died.

Im glad you notcied that if katara used the spirit water on zuko, she couldn't have been able to save aang. Then again, if she used it on zuko maybe zuko wouldn't have turn his back on iroh, and maybe he would've helped aang and katara to fight azula. Who knows
Destiny is a funny thing
But if she used it on zuko there would be no more iconic zuko scar

Actually Toph can tell someone is lying if she’s on the ground/earth. So riding on Appa would be impossible for her to sense the truth.
This is also why she is completely blind on Oppa.
how was she able to win any fight where someone throws a rock of her if she loses sight of it when its in the air
Iroh: Did I ever tell you how I got the nickname "The dragon of the west?"

Shredder: "OH IT'S OVER NOW"
Azula: "Yes."
Or maybe it was just hard for him to give up something he invested so much of himself into, “addiction” makes no sense

To me it doesn't mean "stop loving" but rather "don't be controlled by it" or "don't depend on it"
It makes complete sense that in order to control this great power he has to be willing to do it not in the name of his earthly attachments.

@@AwesomeNinjaXD wood?? bruh

The little details in every single part of this show makes atla the masterpiece that it is.

The attachment chakra is about respecting her choices in life. Aang has a problem with choosing his own desires over other's. Example Bato of the water tribe.
Oh my god his reaction to Zuko’s side in the battle was priceless
Well, he was as you said, powering up. He was trying to master it by letting go of Katara and opening the last chakra which doesn't happen instantly. So in that time he was entering the avatar state, he got hit with the lightning. There was no air vortex to protect him or anything like that yet.
It's incredible that Azula is only 14 years old and she can take over an entire city so fast!
I never accepted to myself that she is 14 years old....she doesnt sound nor look 14....18-20 is more reasonable
She may have been at the start, but time is passing. The whole show is about 9 months long, so at some point she probably turns 15.
Think about how shook that ending made you.
Now think about having to wait *7 months* to watch season 3.
Some of our childhoods were nothing but *pain*
