  • I shot ten hours of performances by School of Rock Show Teams. They were separated by various rounds of of the Shred Contest - here is the first one. Sadly, my battery on my handheld failed during the shoot. If this is helpful to you, feel free to buy me some batteries from my Amazon Wish List: a.co/9C11hyR
    Part 1: • School of Rock Shred C...
    Part 2: • School of Rock Shred C...
    Part 3 - Semifinals: • School of Rock Shred C...
    I did not shoot the actual Finals as that occurred at Milwaukee's Summerfest and I did not have a photo/video pass.

    Apparently this was posted somewhere and has become popular. Three parts are on UA-cam. This first round: ua-cam.com/video/p0y88Qs0XxU/v-deo.html
    Here is the second round: ua-cam.com/video/_stDNxIGj6U/v-deo.html
    ...and the Semifinals: ua-cam.com/video/Ns8Kc-uTuns/v-deo.html
    I did not shoot the actual Finals as that occurred at Milwaukee's Summerfest and I did not have a photo/video pass. Sorry. The winner was Lucas from Seattle (the kid with the purple hair.)

    Check out Asterism and their 16 year old guitarist Haruka Noma "Hal Ca". She already blows away Vai and Satriani . Check out the last two minutes of Dawn, Up the Horns, Light Into Darkness, Rising Moon. And the Deep Purple medley she did when she was 13 years old. You will fall off your chair.

      The judges had a very difficult job, and I wouldn't presume to second-guess them as I'm not really a shred fan. I was a bit surprised that Carter of Oak Park made it to the finals - he's one of my very favorite SoR musicians, but his style is melodic and jazzy rather than super-fast. I admire the sheer balls of Brad Williamson shredding on bass.

      They have much work to do. Scaling properly takes knowledge of where and what key changes to make to produce melodic phrasings. The key changes these competitors have shown is down right horrid. A 6 string guitar was crafted for the purpose of making quick changes in octaves and keys. It's the only string instrument that can compete with piano, which is also technically a string instrument. However, guitar brings a realm of sound that a piano or keyboard can never touch. Repeating the same finger patterns all over the neck is not ever going to produce favorable sound.

    • @mds6387
      @mds6387 4 роки тому +5

      @Fuzzy Butkus I'm not a snob, and i'm not putting these kids down. I'm giving constructive criticism. I want to see these kids excel and develop into guitar masters. I was once like these kids. No one ever taught me or mentioned anything about diatonic keys and patterns. I had only discovered this phenomena by comparing all key pitches on a line graph (sinusoidal waves.) Much different and more effective than the outdated method of "circle of 5ths". I've been criticized by many expert guitarist, and I didn't get mad at them or feel as if they were just being snobs. I took what they said into consideration, and worked on improving myself. One of the greatest and most common criticisms I faced by many of them was I needed to establish a timing. One of those guitarist gave the best suggestion. He suggested that I practice with a metronome. So, I so happened to have a metronome on the guitar learning program I have, and started practicing. After a few months, I no longer needed a metronome. I'm not a snob. Snobs don't try to help people. I am always more than willing to give free lessons to anyone that wants to learn and asks for my help. I have never turned anyone down.

    "Ya mean past the 3rd fret!!!"
    "Yeah man!! I think I saw him play even past the 7th fret!!"
    "Holy crapola!!"
    A few years later (me playing extremely basic pentatonic scales)
    "Dude you rock!!!!"
    "Thanks man. *I'm on my way to guitar God level*"
    Malmsteen rising force album debuts. Takes up tennis.

    stop legato, learn to alternate pick everything. How do you know if you sound like everyone else? when all your fastest runs are descending with lots of pull-offs and your ascending runs do not use alternate picking
    Want to sound different? DEVIATE. See Joe Bonamasso. He alternate-picks everything.
    Don't use legato. IT IS LAZY, IT IS CLICHE'
    Don't use the bar. IT IS CLICHE'
    No tapping. IT IS CLICHE'
    No sweep picking. IT IS CLICHE'
    The key to making it as a guitarist is DEVIATE, figure out what everyone else's technique is (legato, bar, hammer on, pull offs) and DON'T DO IT. Avoid all cliches. It takes more thinking to create your own style but otherwise you sound like everyone else. Boring.
    When your fastest runs are ASCENDING and you alternate-pick everything, that is a good start. Next learn how to assemble a bunch of cool-sounding runs into a single song. Most great songs were 'flash-of-inspiration' little cool runs, recorded for later, then put together several of them to make one song.

      Which players were your favorite?

    • @Greg_Chase
      @Greg_Chase 4 роки тому +2

      @@MidWestConcertVideo2 The young girl seemed the most promising. The others should look at 18 year old Yngwie Malmsteen's early performance. While I'm not a fan of his music, his alternate picking technique was solid as an 18 year old => ua-cam.com/video/RfohBoW6rGo/v-deo.html
      The key is **keep the pick close to the string at all times, spend a lot of time concentrating on doing that and also on NOT MOVING your pick far from any string. EVER**
      While **simultaneously concentrating on left hand - firm-and-accurate finger placement on the string. Pick alternately, do not move pick away from string - firm left hand fingering allows very light, barely-moving the pick over the string so you can keep the pick next to either side of the string at all times**
      Are you a guitarist who wants to record in the studio? read this!
      Play scales slowly and concentrate on firm left hand fingering and "almost-no-movement" right hand pick movement, sliding the heel of the hand up and down over the 6 strings in order to position the pick over the current string that needs to be (lightly!) picked.
      START WATCHING AT TIME 3:43 - see how little he moves the pick. Most players get excited and don't realize how far away from the string they move the pick. For fast alternate picking you must not move the pick away from the string - EVER.
      ua-cam.com/video/-qDYwnBNjfc/v-deo.html
      **RECAP** - to prepare for studio recording - keeping in mind the studio is a very cold, MISTAKE-REVEALING, INACCURATE-PICKING-REVEALING environment - do 2 things:
      1) play scales (initially) and concentrate on NOT MOVING THE PICK away from the string and LIGHTLY STROKING the string while ALTERNATE PICKING the string
      2) simultaneously concentrate on very firm and very accurate left-hand fingering of the string
      BAM spend 3 to 6 months an hour or so a day on that and you can record in the studio without being crushed by "all those years of innacurate playing." You use a metronome to practice at a slow tempo. Concentrate on not moving the pick away from the string and firm/accurate left hand fingering on the string. THEN INCREASE THE METRONOME TEMPO. Again, at this faster tempo, concentrate on not moving the pick away from the string and firm/accurate left hand fingering on the fretboard. THEN AGAIN INCREASE THE METRONOME TEMPO. Be patient! It will take some time to build up the speed because you're learning new very limited and accurate motions for both left and right hands, and this is a physical and mental change and a new habit that will take time to develop.
      People wonder "why do so many studio musicians have to step in for guitarists of a band at recording time" THAT'S WHY. Guitarists in bands fail to take time to develop accurate picking technique in preparation for studio recording.
      The $$ rate per hour of studio time PREVENTS most guitarists from fixing years of inaccurate, sloppy picking when it's time to record in the studio. And embarrassing to have to find a studio musician guitarist to play your leads in order to record your band's music. And then you have to learn accurate picking for the next record ANYWAY. Do it now instead.

    • @taylorj6177
      @taylorj6177 4 роки тому

      What's wrong with "sweep" picking? All it is is alternate picking except you conserve a note in the direction of travel by "Sweeping" instead of alternating on that one note. Most of these players were young and sloppy and just not clean, which is understandable, I'm just sayin.

    • @Greg_Chase
      @Greg_Chase 4 роки тому

      @@taylorj6177 Sweep picking is a cliche' technique. My intention was "do NOT spend precious hours of practice time on cliche' techniques if it is your intention to create an instantly identifiable guitar technique that, when heard, within a couple seconds every listener will know it's you."
      We all grow up developing techniques that are cliche' techniques but you gotta spend some time thinking and answer the question "how can I sound unique?"
      Every superstar guitarist did that.
      It's like an auto race. There are the guys who always end up in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd position at the end of the race. Then there's "the best of the rest." Then behind them there's "the rest."
      This is 100% identical to the old saying:
      **THERE ARE INNOVATORS; THEN THERE ARE IMITATORS; THEN THERE ARE IDIOTS**
      My other point was RECORDING. You have to ARTICULATE PRECISELY or the record company will say "we're not paying for studio time while you try to play one clean take, we're bringing in a studio guitarist." Now, you can try writing into the contract "as the guitarist in this band no one can ever be hired to play the guitar spots if I'm available" but unless you're a star act, no recording contract will be written.
      So the point is, YOU GOTTA PRACTICE your accuracy, you gotta practice note articulation, you can't be sloppy, if you intend to record.
      **AND DUE TO THAT** -- you will need to set time aside to practice. That's your commitment to being able to record, if recording is what you want.
      And you have limited time. So if you want a unique, quickly-identifiable sound that identifies you, are you going to practice cliche' techniques? And be an "Imitator"?" or are you going to set aside a few days, or a week, or two, and figure out how to develop unique chops?
      All in what outcome you want. If you just wanna play in bands to get laid, then who cares, focus on sounding like everyone else.
      But if you want to make a career of it, and record, and have a unique sounding-technique - the answers is
      1) do not spend precious practice time practicing cliche' chops
      2) commit to some "thinking" time to come up with a list of chops/technique to try that no one else or very few people are doing.
      That's what these guys did:
      - Yngwie Malmsteen
      - Ed VH
      - Hendrix
      - Jeff Beck
      It's important though to point out that techniques that no one else is doing can be DERIVED, DEVELOPED from cliche' technique. EXAMPLE: Frank Zappa was using right hand fretboard tapping several years before Ed VH (and there are youtube videos of that) but Ed extended the technique.
      And Frank Z probably copied it from someone. There is video on youtube of a foreign TV music show from the 1960s (maybe even the 1950s) in black and white where an older guitarist demonstrates tapping.
      But EXTEND, do NOT just copy someone else. Try to sound unique.
      Sweep picking is so easy it's like cheating and is not impressive, it's "over exposed". It impresses the guitarist a lot more than his audience, no question.

Do not tempt the muse. Not finishing their lines. Sloppy, not soulful. They need to absorb some BLUES. And filter their performances through their true selves and not what they think they should be playing. They are thinkin far too much. Each one of them.
