  • This is a solo playthrough of Tiny Epic Galaxies with the beyond the black expansion. I give a brief explanation of what the expansion added and then I jump right into playing! I play against the Medium Rogue Galaxy from the Beyond the Black Expansion.
    I did quite well largely due to one of the pilots I got and just rolling really badly for the Rogue Galaxy at the beginning. It all depends on the dice rolls!
    A couple of notes.
    There is a rule update to playing solo that has come out in newer editions of the base game. Basically, if you roll an unusable die for the rogue galaxy, you must re-roll it once. If still unusable you can move to the next die. But this of course makes the rogue galaxy much more formidable which is probably good since many have complained the rogues are too easy. However I also see people who can't beat medium. But, this is the official rule now.
    At around 12 mins I rolled two advance economy for the rogue galaxy and I didn't give them a pilot. I completely just missed this but I should have given them a pilot. In the base game, any unusable die is supposed to be discarded but with the expansion two in a row hires a pilot but the second one isn't used however the human can still follow it. So, if the first die was usable by the rogue galaxy, the second one only triggers hiring a pilot, but the rogue doesn't use the ability. I may have misplayed this in the other scenarios which, if anything gave the rogue galaxy more than they should have gotten.
    At around 31 minutes I followed an advance economy when it wasn't usable by the rogue galaxy and therefore was not followable. Not game changing though I still would have won.

    I notice that you didn't re-roll the unusable rolls for the Rogue Galaxy per the core game rules. Did this rule change in the expansion?

    • @ShaneandStuff
      @ShaneandStuff  7 років тому

      No actually my core set didn't have that rule and I wasn't even aware of the change until after I made the video. I haven't played since I found out either and not sure how I feel about it lol. Will defintely make the rogues harder which is probably good because some people claim that even the hardest difficulty is too easy.

      Well as a person who just picked this game up I find the new rule to make the game extremely difficult and might change it back to the old rules. The Rogue Galaxy is tough enough being able to earn both energy and culture that this new ruling makes them too powerful. I have yet to beat the game on the beginner level.

      @@victorgonzalez2927 They need to be more clear in the rules about what is "un-usable." From their posts on Board Game Geek you don't have to re-roll if they already have full energy or culture or if the enemy attack will have no effect (unless it's one of the "once per turn" attacks then it's considered unusable). These are considered "usable with zero gain." You do have to re-roll once if the enemy can't advance or move their ships or don't have any of their ships on a rolled resource planet/galaxy.
      The key to beating the rogues is following and using abilities. Those advantages tend to mitigate theirs though a lot of luck is necessary as well.

      @@SeekerLancer another thing is to get to the same planet they're on and take it from under their nose. That way they spend a lot of actions that ends up getting them nothing. It's a gamble of course, as you might be the one to end up with nothing :)

      @Scarlett Windhill I have an older version of the game that literally does not have the re-roll rule for the Rogue in there. So at the time I made this video, which was right when I got the kickstarter for Beyond the Black, I wasn't aware they had added it. I play with it now and I've beat the Rogue for the core game on every difficulty. I haven't taken the time to play all the difficulties with Beyond the Black. Some day. But check out my video where I play the core game with the re-roll rule on Medium. ua-cam.com/video/1AFI3kR2KeU/v-deo.html
      Also, there are some situations where a roll has no effect for the Rogue, but you don't re-roll like if it rolls energy but is already full energy. See the comment above by Christopher Blair or check the BGG forums if you weren't aware. Here's a thread that mentions it. boardgamegeek.com/thread/2349984/does-rogue-galaxy-get-reroll-those-3-bonus-actions
      "You never reroll Utilize colony dice.
      If culture/energy tracker are on max, you don't reroll."
      so never re-rolling utilize colony dice for example would be if the rogue is supposed to steal energy from you, but you don't have any. Even though it gained nothing, you don't re-roll as the die was techinically "usable". It's weird logic. It doesn't matter that much as when I did play with the re-roll rule for the rogue, it only made it a little bit harder. This game still comes down to how you roll. When I play solo, I almost always roll great for myself, and bad for the rogue so I do pretty good. When I play other humans, my rolls are always crap!!

    Love that your table inset looks like a planet!

      Haha thanks! Yeah it looks especially awesome because of the space theme. It's great because when playing a game like this where the common elements fit on it we can just rotate it to whoever's turn it is!

      By the way, what's Drones? Something that came for KS backers? My retail copy doesn't have it.

      @@AlexNguyen I'm so sorry I missed this comment and it's been a long time but anyway, yeah it came with the kickstarter. It looks like you can still get it in the deluxe edition otherwise there are some people selling it on Bgg. I've actually never used it, but I've only used the expansion a hand full of times. www.gamelyngames.com/tiny-epic/tiny-epic-galaxies-beyond-the-black

    Thanks for the playthrough! I got my copy but haven't had a chance to play it yet. I was dreading reading the rules! LOL Now it looks like you cut that out for me, so I might just get it to the table this weekend!! Thank you!!

      Wendy Barlow you are welcome I'm glad you enjoyed it and that it helps you get it to the table. They really didn't add much complication just extra options and more fun! I played it a couple weeks ago and we played a couple rounds without the pilots and unexplored space so everyone got uses to the base mechanics then we just added the pilots and unexplored space and it was great! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Cheers!

      I got the first game during the original KS, but it's been a while since I played it, especially solo. I was wondering how much the expansion brought to the game, and it looks like a lot more fun. I also got the drones expansion and am looking forward to that as well. :)

    Thanks.
    Seems watching so far like the rogues don't follow. I guess if anyone wanted more difficulty they (rogues) could force follow any given thing that advantages them if they're maxed on culture. First time ive seen the expansion played, thanks!
    Never played a solo game of either but looks fun. Solo gaming is pretty awesome, things have came a long way since solitaire ;)

    • @ShaneandStuff

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed. There was a rule that was added in later version where you re-roll some of the unusable dice for the rogue which does up the difficulty a little bit. I have beat the core game on the hardest rogue but haven't gone back and tried to go through all the difficulties for the expansion. This is definitely a fantastic solo game and yeah, solo gaming has come a LONG way. It seems most titles these days have a solo because so many people enjoy solo gaming. And if there isn't one in the box, there's usually one or more on boardgamegeek.com for the game created by the community or maybe even a post release official solo mode. Sometimes the community makes a better one than was in the box.
      Thanks for watching! You can check out some of my other solo plays. I hope to start putting out more consistent content again very soon.

      This is a rule change in newer editions than what I have and they do not mention this in the rules for the expansion. This was also already pointed out so I have pinned that comment to make it more visible. Everyone with earlier printings will not be aware of this so I will update the description with a note. Thank you!

      YIKES! Indeed I did. Sheesh. Good eye! It didn't matter much though since I drew that red unexplored card that took two energy. That would have taken my to zero instead I was at two. Oh well. I'm bound to make some mistakes in these. Thanks for pointing it out!

    Would the rogue galaxy have hired a pilot at the 12:00min mark?

    • @ShaneandStuff
      @ShaneandStuff  6 років тому

      oikh yup. Looks like I got distracted commenting on not rolling move ship dice for the rogue and missed it. Thanks for pointing that out!

    • @oikh
      @oikh 6 років тому +1

      Shane and Stuff no prob! Could I just ask, according to the rules, the rogue always hires the leftmost pilot? So if the left most pilot can’t fly the ship that the corresponding rogue dice can buy, then the rogue just performs the dice action if it can.
      However I’ve also come across playthroughs such as yours where the rogue will buy the left most pilot irregardless of the ship it can fly as he rogue will Never utilize the pilot abilities anyway which makes sense.
      Was there a rule change on this too?

    • @ShaneandStuff
      @ShaneandStuff  6 років тому

      oikh the rogue galaxy breaks the pilot skill rule so that it just always hires the leftmost pilot as long as it still has that ship in it's hangar mat. There is no rule change it is just the rule for the rogue galaxy in particular.
