- Coastal foraging for Clams,, Cockles and Scallops. Shellfish are abundant on our coastline, all it takes is a little bit of know how. Easy to find and easy to catch they can be terrific bait for fishing or make a delicious meal - clams, cockles and scallops I show how to find them all. A bottle of table salt and a bucket is about all you need and can turn into some great family fun.
When I have mini anxiety attacks at home I watch your Videos and Calm down ♥️ thank you!
Emily renae Thompson - Hi Emily, I have heard this from several people now. I am very pleased that we could help you out. All the best. 😊👍🏻🐚🦀🍽
Me too....
I dont get anxiety attacks but i have nerve damage in my back and shoulder. When im badly fishlocker vidros take me away from the pain. I think its the relaxed intresting thingy that john oozes. Hope you are well. Kit
These always make me sleepy
Bless you 😊
I love the way John and his wife Anna talk. It's so nice how he takes his time to explain the information about the sea life that live on the beach. Even though I don't like seafood, this makes me want to go and experience what he has taught me in person. There son is adorable. Nice how he is being taught early. He is being taught to respect sea life!
Queen A.K.A. Misty YVETTE - Hi Misty, thank you for your comment and welcome to our channel. I am so glad you are enjoying our content. We love getting out in nature as a family. All the best and have a great day. 😊👍🏻🎣🐚🦀
The ocean has always felt like home to me and your videos just give me that warm happy feeling.Much love to you and your family.
Avoret Sims - Thankyou. We are simply sharing what we love doing. All the best to you and your family. 😊👍🏻🎣🐟💙
I have watched lots of videos on youtube but I must say your videos, the tips and the good care of wild life that you take is amazing! You don't see many fishermen returning 10lb fish back to sea now a days. I watched all your videos and hopefully there are more to come, hopefully we can meet for a fishing session one day mate. Simply great!
Maan Radwan - Thankyou very much 😊 Not only for the kind words but your support. I definitely don’t plan on stopping making the vids - So hopefully there will be plenty more to come. 😉👍🏻🎣🐟 Tight lines bud.
You, sir, are a very knowledgeable and you explain very well. You need your own TV show.
Ристу Георгиев - Thankyou, I hope you have found this video helpful. 😊👍🏻🐚
No cause the big networks would try to fake that shit he is better off on UA-cam where he can be himself tv seams to change the way they look and act like I said you tube is your channel and he decides what goes on and I like that I'm afraid if he went on TV that would change or at least they would try to change him and that would be the end of that I think
I am from Colorado which is quite landlocked and thousands of miles away from the nearest ocean. To me this is like searching for food on a different planet. the closest I have come to finding sea creatures were the fossils I would find in the rocks near my house. Thank you so much for the amazing content. I hope you and your family have a great Christmas and a happy new year.
- Aw thank you so much. That is really nice. We are glad you found our video interesting, we are simply sharing what we love doing. If you enjoyed this video we have some other great ones you will really enjoy. Welcome to our channel and all the best to you and your family from a wet and blustery Cornwall in the UK. :D
Love when you bring the missus and son .
daniel goulding - I would go without at least one of them. What’s better than doing the things you love with the people you love? 🎣👍🏻😊🎣🦀🐚💙
I've just found your channel yesterday, you've kinda inspired me to go beach foraging when I finally get to the coast. Though my coast is off of maine up east in the US. But I'm excited to see what we've got around here. You've earned another sub, keep up the good work!
YahBoise Idaho - Thankyou and welcome to our channel. Good luck on your forage and all the best to you and your family. 😊👍🏻🎣🦀🐚
The Fish Locker Do you think there are good shellfish and stuff on the west coast of the United States?
Sameni found him yesterday too lol
@@angryducko-o4781 in the PNW, especially the Puget Sound region, we have "razor clams", which are much more similar to softshells/geoducks @19minutes than the long, skinny razors in this video. They're delicious, though!
Jon DeFeo good to know :)
This kid has an absolutely awesome hat.
Максим Рубан - He is awesome full stop. Such a little superstar. 😊💙
Guess what's in my next shopping bag ready for when 'This' all lifts and I can get down back to family on the Isle of Wight! Thanks to the family for this John.
- Haha. Cheap table salt. Best 25p you can spend. ;)
The Fish Locker Family (Whanau) - never tire watching these videos - the best!!! - inspiring - eventful and truly educational - thank you for the continued posts - Cheers - Wayne
Wayne Sparrow - No problem at all Wayne. We are simply sharing what we love doing with people of a similar passion. 😊👍🏻🎣🦀

I had to watch this again. I am so amazed with the razor clams! I love watching you salt and see them come up.

Little James is looking so well. You are both incredible parents.
Top notch video! I can’t believe what I’m learning. Amazing.

Matthew Ballard - Thanks Matthew, it’s great fun isn’t it. 😊👍🏻🐚🦀
Really really enjoyed this walk about. A true slice of heaven. Very well done 👍
Isotelus - Thankyou very much for the positive feedback, I am very glad you enjoyed the video. We are a very outdoors family and love being out and about. Doesn’t matter if it’s the woods, the shore or on the water. We’d rather that the kids grew up with a love and appreciation of the outdoors. 😊👍🏻🎣🐚🦀🌿
Thank u for this educational video. It made me laugh seeing the razor clams. How amazing to be able to get them out
- Its so cool isn't it. :D
I used to live on Vancouver Island when I was around 12 and my stepfather used to take me out at low tide to show me all the little crabs, giant starfish, oysters etc. I wouldn't put my boots in the water back then. He had to carry me out on piggyback!! LOL! But it was good fun and creatures went on forever some days it seemed! Hope your little guy has fun!!
- It sure sounds like you have some great memories from the shore. I grew up playing on the shore with my siblings and cousins doing just this. Simply wonderful. :)
Ever wonder.....hundereds of yrs ago....how many people died just from trying all this stuff and findin out what is edible or what is poisonous or what just tastes completely dreadful??? Fishlocker I LOVE watching your foraging videos! See whats under the rocks, in the hole you just salted!! So much fun and you have really taught me alot!! Thanks n keep it up!!🦞🦀🐚
- Angela it is our pleasure. I love that we can share these things with you. People in the UK have been coastal foraging for thousands of years. The first settlements here were coastal ones. Wonderful isn't it. :)
This was a interesting video. I've never seen razor clams. You share with patience. Very relaxing. Thanks for sharing. Loved it.
- It is my pleasure to share with you Nia. 😊
I absolutely love watching your channel. Very educational and very interesting.
- Thank you Meagan, I am very glad to hear you are enjoying our content. Best wishes and stay safe. :)
Facinating vid Mr. Fish Locker. Enjoyed the family touch. Inspired me to take my 7-year old down to the Fjord and show hin the magic of smelling the sea in his nostrils and sand under his finger nails - Quality time with the family.
I appreciate your time sharing with us.
Derek Allport - It is no problem at all. We love the outdoors. Shore, field or woodland we love getting out and about and I’ve taken great enjoyment in teaching my children about the natural world around them. Hopefully the knowledge and understanding will bring them joy throughout their lives and even onto their own children some day. 😊🎣🌿🐚
@@TheFishLocker Thanks for the reply. Probably why I like living in Norway - green and clean- unless you bring the "Magical Trolls" into the equation. Keep those family vids comimg. I appreciate your time and trouble.
Derek Allport - Magical Trolls? Have you been eating any strange tasting berries or mushrooms?haha. 😉😛
I don’t know how I came across your videos, but I absolutely love them! Binge watching all your coastal foraging videos!! Love the warmness of your videos. 😁
Yatziri Norato - Thank you. Have you seen any of our fishing videos or are they just not your thing?
No, I have not seen them, but I’ll give them a try as well! You never know, I may find them as amazing as your coastal foraging videos! Haha
Yatziri Norato - Some people prefer them to the foraging videos. So who knows? 😊🎣👍🏻
Yall are so cute. I thoroughly enjoy your videos.

Another incredible video. We are enjoying this channel very much. Reminds this author of when she used to go fishing and clam hunting with her father :)

He said watching the razor clams come out of the sand was very therapeutic !
You are our go to youtube channel to watch over supper now (:

- I am glad that our videos are helping you. 😊
This is my new favorite channel. lol Makes me miss living by the Atlantic ocean. I could've gone foraging!
Carole Showell - Thankyou Carole, we lived in the city for a short while and I hated it. Constantly pining for the coast. Hopefully you will get chance to try and do some coastal foraging in the future. 😊👍🏻🎣🐚🦀
Your wife is a very lucky lady! Must be fantastic to go for a walk on the beach with you. Relaxing and informative in equal measure xxx
- Haha. I am pretty sure she has had enough of me talking by now. :P
Brilliant education John !

Stumbled across your channel and can't stop watching. Wishing you and your adorable family all the best in 2020 and years to come! Happy Foraging!
- Thank you Suzie and welcome to our channel. I hope you enjoy the rest of our content and we wish you all the very best for the new year. :)
You make me homesick! I moved to Texas miles from any coast. I miss my childhood holidays beachcombing on the south coast at Weymouth, Lyme Regis and West Bay. Texas beaches, the only one I have seen, are nothing compared to home. Best find I had was the top of an Ammonite (about 8 inches long) which I found in the clay on the beach above Skegness.
- I agree with you. From my experience the beaches in Texas are nothing compared to back in old Blighty. 😊
Loved the vid as usual! Especially when you had the big clam and it squirted some water out. I heard young James say, "It's wee-ing!". Love it matey! You make it look too easy!
Haha!!! Thank you for your kind words Christopher, stay safe and have a good day mate
You’ve earned a sub my good sir!
Hee Soon Yang - Welcome to the channel. I hope you enjoy the rest of our content. 😉👍🏻🎣
Awesome video, loads of solid tips, thank you.
soulBain25 - No problem at all. I hope the info was useful to you. It doesn’t even need to be a bait/food collecting session. It could just be a fun day out enjoying the wild world around you. I love doing stuff like that with the kids. 😊👍🏻
Love the videos keep up the good work 👍
Thanks, will do!
One of my sons (he is six) and I spent a beautiful and manly evening watching your uploads. We both loved them as we have tried foraging often (never by the sea though). You have inspired us both. He particularly loved watching you catch and eat a lobster and two crabs. He wants to find one now himself haha thanks for that - we had a great evening together :)
- It is our pleasure Xander, kids are not our intended audience but I am very glad you have enjoyed watching them together and they have encouraged him to get out and explore the natural world around him. Good luck to you on your foraging. :)
@@TheFishLocker aye, i said manly because some of the stuff wee boys are watching these days is really not to my liking tbh. Would that kids got to watch stuff like your putting out - educational, fun, and get your hands dirty adventure for food. Your channels got it all sir. Thanks, your doing a service to society. 😊
Xander Duffy - We are just sharing what we love doing. All the best to you and your family. 😊
Every single one of your videos you have your wife and son with you I don't think I have seen one without your family that right there tells you what he is the kind of person he is , one that cares his family is with him and he is teaching his kid at a young age so he never has to go hungry dude you are the man love your stuff not sure about eating some of this stuff of course we don't have alot of those here so we don't know ow it is but FL beaches have alot of food no one is willing to find it they walk along the beach and go see there is nothing here but you have to go to the back side of any island in FL and the intercostal is full of food

Superbly informative film that means with the big spring tides that are coming in the next few days I will be giving that salt method a try.
many thanks, films like that are what youtube is all about. cheers.
8r4ham - No problem at all. The very best of luck. 👍🏻🐚 Hopefully you find my other vids as helpful. Give me a shout if you have any questions or comments. 😉
Great tutorial on how to use the natural bait for the area, just the know how for little effort and cheap bait and good eating.
Stuart Allen - Exactly mate. And like I’ve said in other comments - it can be a fun and interesting day out.

Terence Wyn Roberts - Thankyou very much. I’m glad you enjoyed it. The beaches/rocks up in the north east used to have them twice that size. Literally the size of gooseberries sometimes. 👍🏻🐚
Colecting bait is very rewarding I do enjoy it well done on this vid m8
Steven Hammond - I absolutely agree Steven, catching something on bait you collected yourself is a great feeling. 😉👍🏻🎣🐟
FOund you yesterday! Totally subscribed and have started foraging this last year to supplement our family.! I have constructed traps for crawfish and have used them for catching bait fish and crawdads. We live inland so we forage for mushrooms , dandelion greens and roots and what we can get our hands on. Love the videos keep them coming!

Isn’t that the most satisfying thing ever?!?

Great footage again John,ye can't beat a bucket full of seafood..ha! We call the big clams "gurachean's"
It's pronounced differently as we speak funny up here in sunny Scotland..lol
- Haha. No more funny that I do mate.
Ace mate... Just ACE... Love these uploads with the Family mate So informative Gonna Have a go with Our James and Bradley in the Half Term Mate.
Cheers Pal
- Any time mate, best of luck with the boys. Spring tides are the best, we have just had some big tides so depending on where you are you may be best waiting for better conditions. ;)
That last clam you dug up is a mud gaper. Their a soft shelled clam but the spouts on them are really tough and are great for bait for shore fishing. You can use them in spots where the crabs and prawns are destroying baits before any fish have the time to get them. Flatties love them.
Tam M - That makes perfect sense. There are a few lads that use them for bream fishing - which is often plagued by crabs. Great tip Tam. 👍🏻🎣🐚🐟
The clam you found is often harvested by clammers in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, in the states of Washington and Oregon. It is known as a geoduck. (Pronounced as "goo-ee-duck") The clam is often a good meter below the surface. If you look this up on UA-cam, you will see that most seasoned fishermen use a specialized tool for catching them. One other thing to note, the geoduck you found was on the small side. They make for very good eating, but look up how to prepare them. They have a skin that needs to be removed.
Love your channel.
Continued good luck fishing!
- Yes we know them as Gaper clams or soft shelled clams. I have spent the "clam guns" you mean. Simple yet very effective. I am going to make one and try it out. ;)
Great videos. I found you yesterday my son would love this too! New subscriber 👍👍 all the best to you and fam

I binge watched a few videos this morning as I got a bit of "me time" loved the traces you made for squid and importance of wetting the knot before pulling it tight, your channel is perfect for seasoned fishermen/woman and beginners alike.I used to use toooooo many 3way swivels.?😆
My heart was in my mouth watching you bringing in those two tuna!!! Cheese and slice John your spine must have felt like mush after that day out...pffft! I always try to catch up with your latest when I'm on a break at night, helps the shift fly in..👍 (tight lines mate)

Jimmy Mature - Well thankyou very much and welcome to the channel. I hope you find the videos not only enjoyable to watch but useful. Are you an angler or just a lover of the outdoors?
The Fish Locker - I’m an angler mate, pike in the winter, carp in the summer and sea fishing when on holiday. Need to get better at sea fishing though...
Jimmy Mature - That’s great. I like to be a bit of an allrounder but predominantly saltwater fishing. My favourite being boat fishing. I am working towards building the coarse content of the channel it’s just finding the right venues and getting the time.
Idk why but your accent makes me smile
- Thank you. :D
Love your channel!
- Thank you
It's always a pleasure to go foraging with you :) Sadly I live very far away from the next beach...would need to drive 6 hours...
- I am glad that you can join us. And who knows where the future may take you. One day you may find yourself by the coast and now you have a head start ;)
Another brilliant video. Why are you not on TV, half an hour or an hour show a week, this is proper education. Could you imagine how many youngsters would do this and also take up fishing, they could even do outings on the beach like this. I think even if they dont put you on your own show then at least give you an educational contract for schools.
- We have been contacted by a couple of independent TV groups but haven't found a good fit with our vision for the channel. Something educational for schools would be wonderful. 😊
@@TheFishLocker i hope you can get it sorted you and your family are naturals, i go into a different zone when watching your video's.
It's strange I hate fish all fish I can't stand it but I love watching your videos they relax me 😂😂 and I'm petrified of the sea its strange haha xxx
- Well I am glad that our videos can help to bring you peace. :)
Omg! flawless skipping rocks. I'd be there for hours. 3:02
A. V. F. - I’m pretty good at it also. Some of those are easy 10 bounce stones. 😉
Slipper limpets are a fantastic bait for pretty much anything, in 1s an 3s for small fish or several threaded up the hook shank. The only thing is in Dorset there are signs on the beaches now saying it's illegal to remove them or to use them as they are invasive? I had used them for years salted or frozen and after a big storm there would be big clumps of them thrown up above the tide line and as a free plentiful bait they were ideal for us kids. Have you heard of such a ban John? Great video as always 😊
- I knew they were invasive but cannot understand why there would be a ban on using them unless its to hopefully stop folks bringing them to new areas and leaving them there?
Great videos I really want to do this up here in Scotland some time
- Well get amongst it then, there are plenty of great beaches up in Scotland for foraging. :)
Broara there is a lovely sandy beach which is great for foraging, i live in wales 600 miles from there but always go and walk the beach (not foraging though just walking
You read my mind John lol im about to make some vid about razor clam, spring tide next week at the lowest of 0.01 very good for collecting razor for bait nd some food too. Thanks for sharing👍👍👍.
Zeke Fishy - No problem mate. I’ve been waiting for ages for the right conditions for this vid. Good luck on the hunt. 👍🏻🐚😉
great video......... !!
Paul Tye - Thanks Paul, glad you enjoyed it. 😊👍🏻🎣🐚
Great vid John, can't believe you put the scallops back though ! In case you didn't know the large clam is a gaper clam, bass, cod will take them !
kevin buckler - I did do a bit of research into what they were when I got home. They were absolute bruisers, proper cod bait clams.haha.
A few folks have laughed at me for putting the scallops back. I haven’t been able to explain properly why I did it yet, partly because I felt they were too good for bait, and partly because they are quite special and I feel happier thinking of them living there rather than not. If that makes sense? I’m an odd one some times.lol. 😉😛
@@TheFishLocker does make sense!
I don't live anywhere near the sea, but watching your videos makes me want to. 😁

The Fish Locker ohhhh ^_^ is the ferry still running to Falmouth? St mawes is my favourite place in the world. Do you go there much? I’ll have a look 👀
Bug - Sorry mate not sure about the ferry. I think they change around this time of year. 🤷🏻♂️🛥
The Fish Locker you’re right they have :) we drove round. Which is a bloody detour and a half. And I managed to lock my keys in the car and it took half the day for the RAC to find me 😂 I love Cornwall though. Going to move there one day. It’s nice out of the holiday season. Just the locals. They call me a northerner. I’m fro. Southampton lol

She's happier when I'm behind her.
@@TheFishLocker Brilliant 😂😂
Mate, love your vids. Have hand dug Razors (Ensis directus) on Cape Cod along with the Fat Clam (Siliqua patula), all excellent eating. The first snail you picked up was a Pelican's Foot (Apporrhais pespelicanis). Your species names in the UK most likely are different but the genera are the same. Like your approach to conservation. The pigs here in the US, strip everything.
- Thank you Bob, and yes - Pelicans foot here also. I am glad that you share our philosophy on sustainability. We also have greedy people here who take everything. Sadly it is worse with asian/chinese immigrants. Literally nothing is left behind. It is so sad.
The scallop shells are really pretty
- Yes they are.
Nice John, I must go get some 👍
basa364 - It’s a fun day out that not many people will even know about. And razors are a good bait for bream. 😉
When I was in the army ,a long time ago ,I was stationed in Alaska and one time my company went to Kodak island, we camped on the beach we had a field kitchen with us , and we caught sea run dolly varden trout, they were fallowing the salmon up this stream , all of them were about 28 inches long. We caught Dungeness crab under an old pier with nothing but a piece of string that we tied fish guts on and we picked mussels of this rocky point, you could pick a 5 gallon bucket in no time flat ,the reason I mentioned the field kitchen is that the cooks out did them selves cooking all we brought to them and we ate like kings. These same cooks back on post ,Fort Richardson , would burn water ,but why they shined on that trip is a mystery. But after that trip I’ve always loved mussels.
- Henry that is a wonderful story, thank you for sharing it with us. I could imagine each of those things just as you told it. That is the wonderful thing about this type of activity - it is an experience for all of the senses and the memories are all the more vivid for it. All the best Henry and have a great weekend. :)
The clamb you holding at 19: 40 is what we calling the Zee-Piemel ( the Sea-Prick).
I once learned that from a fischerman who teached us finding cockles and oysters on the Dutch wad.
He showed us that if you are holding it in your hands closed off from light (and your warm hands) it spits out iodine for survival.
- I will have to research that and give it a try. ;)
brilliant videos
Another good tutorial vid 👍🏻
- Thank you very much.
Love watching you get the razor clams are they nice to eat but are they tough xx
They are tough if overcooked.
@@TheFishLocker thanks for telling me do you have to cut the end of and so I was away or can you eat it all xx 😘
Hi John that snail id is pelican's foot.Great info.
Ray Gibson - You’re absolutely right. I wasn’t long off the camera when I remembered the name. Just had a mental blank when put on the spot.haha. I used to be massively into collecting shells when I was a boy. As you can imagine all the cool kids wanted to hang around with me. 😆
Can’t believe I JUST found this channel.

Girlfriend looks a bundle of fun!! ha ha!
- She sure is.
Fun and good eats
- It certainly is. ;)
I live on the Belgian coast, which isn't rocky but has all the shells you have. A word about mussels: I've always been told that you can't eat them unless they're continuously submerged.
Hubert Van Calenbergh - Yeah that’s not true. Otherwise no coastal forager would ever eat mussels. 🤷🏻♂️🐚🍽
