The 4 being bumped down to 3 for the semis and finals fit with the math of the 13-week summer schedule. 9 4-player first round matches + 3 3-player semifinals + 1 3-player final = 13 weeks. So 36 is the most you would be able to cram in a 4-player format without wild cards and get away with it. If you did have wild cards after the first round like in the standard tournaments, you actually would have only been able to host 32 players in the 13-week session: 8 1st round matches with 8 winners and 8 wild cards + 4 semifinals + the final. I'd also argue that the points being raised was because of the 4-player format to help make up for the points being spread out thinner.

The 4 person panel looks off to me too. But you got to love that they played the full version of that theme song when they all came out. I may have been dancing in my seat when it was playing. 😁

Whoa-- 3:28 The font for the words "the ... challenge" is identical to that from "The Challengers", which debuted very shortly after SJ finished!

Is it just me or did I hear the explanation about the points instead of cash twice?

What Super Jeopardy! should've had was the word "Super" above the big gold Jeopardy! letters on the set

They only did super jeopardy for 1990. Funny enough for the greatest of all time tournament they’re using points for that like in super jeopardy. It’ll interesting to see what it’ll see what it’ll look like for January 7th.

Still can't believe they made an NES game from Super Jeopardy!

And one of only 22 games (IIRC) on the NES to support the 4-player multi-tap.

I actually owned that game back in the day. I still have my original copy of that game.

Really when you think about it, one of the only rule change they've seen is the ring in rule where you can't ring in until Alex finishes the clue. It was implemented at the start of season 2, and has stuck not only with the US version, but with every international version I've seen. Still, one of my all time favorites. Interesting also, nearly all the Super J! footage has been yanked from UA-cam. Great episode Cyndi.

I had over 150 episodes of Jeopardy! over on Dailymotion, but most of those were also pulled (at least there's no strikes over there). I still post new ones that I find on occasion, but I moved most of them over to Google+. I have an episode from December of 1990 that I'll post in a few weeks (most of the tape isn't from December since I like to reserve the Christmas commercials for the end of the year, but I'll slip this one by). Interesting how in the regular episode, Alex wasn't wearing his glasses even though he began wearing them on a semi-permanent basis starting in the fall of 1989. It's still a solid show. If you find the questions "too easy", you should try out and be on the show!

The four-person quarterfinals don't bother me as much as that one-day half-hour final. Super Jeopardy! could have ended on an hour-long final. Instead, ABC debuted America's Funniest People as a regular series before moving AFP to its natural home riding America's Funniest Home Videos' coat-tails on September 16, 1990. Of course, SJ! was summer filler for ABC while AFHV was ABC's hot new top-ten hit that it was eager to clone, so priorities.

Somehow, I feel that 'Celebrity Jeopardy' (the actual one, not the SNL one) could be inducted, due to how horrible those contestants were in general.

Curious-IIRC BUrns Cameron was brought into SJ! because someone was running for congress at the time. Would you know who that particular Jeopardy! champion happened to be?

Alex mentioned in the first round match between Chuck Forrest, Dave Traini, Ron Black & Yael Sofar (sp?) that he was running in the state of Ohio and that he was interested in competing in a future tournament if he lost the election. so that narrows it down a little.

Richard Cordray was the guy's name. He played in the Battle of the Decades, but I don't remember him in the Ultimate Tournament of Champions.

I know they added the fourth player to each first-round game to make room for Bob Blake and Frank S. I simply assumed that Burns was chosen to fill one of those extra spots.

Likewise, when they had the Ultimate Tournament of Champions, J's publicity people included their regular winnings and what they did in syndicated events, but omitted SJ entirely. (Participants were to free to mention it on their own.)

Honestly, I kinda have to disagree on Jeopardy! being fantastic these days. I find the questions to be way too easy at times, and I do admit the Clue Crew isn't as interesting as they once were.
Also, I have NEVER been a fan of Austin Rogers. While he did a great job winning so much money, at times, his goofy antics came off as rather annoying.

You missed one other alumni tournament--The Ultimate Tournament of Champions from 2005, for $2M, aka the Quest for Ken.
