  • On this edition of The Games Of '90, we take a look at one of the best revivals of all time, Classic Concentration. This will make for Alex Trebek's third show done here on the Games Of '90, but is it his best one for the time?

    I agree, this was a GREAT show back in the day! It would probably work today.

    Fun Fact: Alex Trebek was the only man to host Classic Concentration, To Tell The Truth, and Jeopardy at the same time in 1991. We are all familiar with Alex Trebek hosting Jeopardy! as the other two shows we couldn't watch before UA-cam since some of us were doll sized humans when they were aired.

      Chuck Woolery was doing The Big Spin, Love Connection, and Scrabble back in 1985, too.
      Same thing with Geoff Edwards doing The Big Spin, New Chain Reaction, and Jackpot! in 1989...

    BUZZR is going to start airing 1990 episodes (not just the first couple weeks) starting in August 2022, so we'll be receiving a good look at this portion of the run. The set gimmicks were starting to get a little too far, but it's still another great look at the late, great Alex Trebek, which coincidentally comes with the launch of Pluto's Jeopardy! channel starring Mr. Trebek.

    I like to classify the Trebek Concentration into two categories;
    1. Walking down the steps at the beginning of the episode
    2. Walking out from between two cars at the beginning of the episode
    I greatly prefer the second category because they fixed a TON of issues I had with the early run.
    First off, I never cared for the cash pot, it just seemed like a cheap prize, the same way I felt about the 200 California lottery tickets or 10 stocks of whatever.
    Secondly, they reintroduced the TAKES, which meant that good prizes could still be in play if the match was already made. And even if someone stole your prize, there was another TAKE so you could steal it back. I always wondered what happened to the TAKE props they used? I'm sure that purple/pink one is worth some money to some weirdo out there.
    Third, but I hated HATED the original best out of three games because it could be incredibly cheap in that someone could be up there all week if they had an "interrupted game". I remember one old idiot kept getting interrupted games which allowed him to stay on the show for way way too long. He wasn't a very good player either, he just always lucked out, and went to the bonus round 4 times with a TON of time on the clock and eventually got a car. And then he was allowed to continue to play. Again, later on once they won the car, they were done. And that's fair.
    Trebek was way better on Concentration than Jack Narz, who I always felt was the most boring long term gameshow host ever. He took a great concept like Now You See It and made it sleep inducing with his no fluff delivery. You may as well have not even had a host.

    Also in the Concentration original show the Bonus round in that version was very difficult and I only saw only 1 winner and a few who came close to winning. While the bonus Round of Classic Concentration was a million times better and a much easier concept but yet challenging.

    'Classic Concentration' is definitely Alex Trebek's best work, but special mention should go to Stan Blits' excellent music package for the show. I will, to my final day, stand by no game show's music will ever be better than that featured on 'Classic Concentration'.
    Aside from the inconsistency in determining a champion, my only gripe with 'Classic Concentration is this: After a contestant makes a match and is allowed to solve a puzzle, there is no penalty--in this case, forfeiting control of the board--for an incorrect solution. Tweak those, and this would be a truly great show.

    Trebek actually did want to continue hosting Classic Concentration - reportedly he went to NBC and asked for them to order new episodes at one point, plus he hosted the runthrough for the proposed "Classic Concentration II".

    Ray Combs was a familiar face on NBC as an audience warm-up person and had been featured on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show and he auditioned for the host of Classic Concentration but Alex Trebek was hired. Combs auditioned for Family Feud on CBS and syndication and won that job. The Jack Narz Concentration was low-tech with a slow moving game board in its first season (before a new board was built with faster turnaround) and the Double Play two rebus bonus round and I'm not sure what other end game would be used if you did not like the Double Play round with 1970s era pull cards.

    I would love to see nbc and FremantleMedia give this show a solid prime time revival. Especially with how well shows like the fantastic $100,000 pyramid (Strahan version is almost on par with the Dick Clark version), Match Game, Feud, TTTT, and even The Jokers Wild are doing (Snoop Dogg is no Jack Barry but it’s eons better than the Pat Finn version)
    That said I would love to hear your take on Snoop’s TJW... keep up the excellent work Cyndi!

    Other than the "best two out of three is better than two strikes" (I believe it's the opposite), this is right on the money. I maintain that Classic Concentration is, by far, Alex Trebek's best work, and considering how great he is on Jeopardy!, that's saying a lot. We only see glimpses of Alex's sense of humor on J!, but on CC it's very much on display, and it makes the show more of a party. I would love to see the show return in some form.

    To actually be honest, I liked the Jack Narz version better than this revival. The first revival lasted 5 years, while this revival lasted 4. The episodes were rare, and there were lots of gimmicks that really attracted my attention. Not only that, but I also liked the Double Play bonus game better, because believe it or not, not everybody wants to win a car, and besides, if you are lucky enough to reveal all four prizes and then a wild card, you can win more than just a car. For the pace of Double Play, it's a wash. Even though some prizes might be some of the worst, let's face it: some contestants prefer some prizes over others.

    Concentration is my favorite game show of all time, but I did not like this version at all. I liked Marjorie and Alex, and the bonus game was a good addition, but that was all. Five less numbers on the board meant there was always a mismatched tile. If a prize was matched with a Wild Card, they would turn over the match to the original prize. And the worst part for me was when the contestants (and it seemed like every single one of them) would say, "I would like to find a match or a wild card behind number...." I liked the Narz version better than the Trebek version, but I wish there were a lot more episodes of the original Downs/Clayton run available.

    • @OliveOyl12590
      @OliveOyl12590 6 років тому +2

      There weren't any mismatches in the regular game. There were three WILD! cards in each game.
      Here's the edited portion of my response.
      The episodes from the original NBC run, like most of its other shows at that time, were wiped or recorded over to save money.

    LMAD '90's review is going to be interesting--there was a lot of behind-the scenes drama between Disney, Bob Hilton's firing, having to bring Monty back, and the fight at Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney's Hollywood Studios) over the cost of using the sound stage..

    Classic Concentration is the one game that NBC still will not allow anybody to do anything with. It's a shame because it was a very fun show, and it never slogged on like the Jack Narz version. It just was faster. Also the music used for the show is pretty much as you would expect since this was the second time Mark Goodson leased the show from NBC. As for the cancellation...this would have been the beginning of the end for the daytime game show on NBC. The last game show I remember watching (and Enjoying) was the first format of Ceasar's Challenge before they moved to USA network.

    I kind of liked this version. I remember seeing some of these episodes as a kid. Around 1988, the UK started their own version based on this format, but without the word "classic" in the title. It was a best two out of three, but the contestants kept their prizes regardless of whether they won a game. Getting two wild cards got a contestant 50 pounds. The winner of the match played the Global Game for a vacation. It was played just like the car round on the US version, and had to match seven different destinations in 50 seconds. For its second series, they made a few minor changes. One TAKE card was replaced with SWAP, where the contestant can swap one of their prizes for one of three cards, with either 1, 50, or 100 pounds on it. The time in the Global Game was reduced to 45 seconds as well. It only lasted the two series across the pond.

  • @gameshowguy2000
    @gameshowguy2000 6 років тому +1

    And IIRC, with the Cash Pot, that threw out one Wild Card, leaving only two.
