Rest in peace.
RIP George Alexander Trebek 1940-2020
Little would these 3 people know they were the first contestants on a game show with a legendary host.
Alex trebek was already well known before jeopardy. He hosted a little known game show called double dare. But it’s not like the Marc summers version
max koykas I was not aware of that thank you for telling me same with putting it wasn’t like Marc Summers edition that was going to be my next question
@@RacheWasHere I can't imagine Alex telling a family they have to dig through a giant nose's snot-filled nostrils to find a little red flag.... 😂😂😂
Jim B. True I can’t see it either but when I hear double dare that’s the first to come to my mind
This first season was taped at the old Metromedia TV studios in Hollywood, which was recently torn down.
At one point I actually started to believe he was never gonna leave us
I had hoped he be one of the lucky ones to survive, but I lost a good friend to that nasty cancer recently and knew how serious things could get. :'(
He fought hard
i'm guessing you've started hoping the same for Johnny Gilbert?
He's never left, he will always be here.
He IS the spirit of the show.
Me too D:
RIP
Lets play osrs together
Rest in peace

He was a good man
@@JustChill0927 it sucks even though we all knew it would happen sooner rather than later and he himself said as much.
RIP George Alexander Trebek 1940-2020.
Impressive how polished the show already is on its first day. Alex and the production already feel like they're in form.
Jeopardy was already 20 years on the air when this was broadcast. Alex stepped into a show that was already highly successful.
@@darkwood777 The Art Fleming version of Jeopardy had been off the air for a solid five years when the Alex Trebek version started. And the production had a very different look and tone back in the 1960s and 70s.
TL:DR, I stand by my statement.
Jon Smith True facts! Sure, the format and gameplay were already solid but the production of this version was brand-new.
I kinda polished it a bit further by downloading this video and using frame interpolation to make the video seem much smoother frame-wise! The original video is in 29.97 FPS, and I pushed it up to 60 FPS!
@@onnapnewo Yes, though in season 2 the made one rule change that stuck. The contestants had to wait, or get locked out for a quarter second.
How 80's should we make this show look?
YES.
@ferzy09 *startrebek
Well this was 1984 what you expect 🤔
@@grumpyguy2877 The first pilot of the revived Jeopardy had Alex, but with the old logo, pull cards instead of monitors, it looked like a 1970s version of the show. Fortunately Merv Griffin Productions went back to the drawing board and gave the show a 1980s look and feel with monitors and a high tech makeover which got it bought in sydication.
What is...We love you Alex!
Yes that is The young Alex Trebeck in 1984 1st eipsode of Jeopardy before it went into syndication.
this hits different now :'(
@@chrisfinch8637 Very Good.
Kevron Harris You're Right.
Rip Alex Trebek 😥 wow this is 40 years old. Thanks for posting this.
0:17 - This was the only ghost to appear on Jeopardy.
Greatest host of syndicated television
A side effect of the tube-based cameras of the era. Bright light sources would overstimulate the internal workings of the pickup tube, and it would take a moment for them to return to normal.
this genuinely made me laugh, i had the same exact thought
Pat saj, er, Alex Trebek
@@thinhnonyt I was about to slug you, but then you edited your comment

(1940 - 2020)
Jeez he was already 44 when this came out?!
@@seanc5881 we love you alex we'll missed you man.
When I heard he had cancer I hoped and prayed for him. I was completely crushed when I heard the news he was gone. His humor, intelligence and charisma can never be duplicated. He left tough shoes to fill.
We can't replace Alex but we can honor him by playing the game he loved.
Im literally in tears ive watched him since i was a kid and felt as though I knew him. He seemed apart of my family while eating dinner and watching him host the show. Alex you have brought families together and even though you have never met alot of us personally we have met you therefore you will forever be in our hearts and you will never be forgotten. Thank You Mr.Alex Trebek we all here on UA-cam and across the world will miss you
Alex Trebek hosted this show for 36 years. There will never be another Jeopardy! host like him. Rest in Heaven, Alex.
Rest in Peace to an absolute legend.
A: He is the GREATEST game show host of all-time
Q: Who is Alex Trebek? Rest in peace
Pat Sajak is.
Really? Here? Go away troll.
THAT'S RIGHT!
alex trebek aint got shit on steve harvey, not even close, but hes good ig
@@jonogren5567 Pat Sajak sucks! I went to a taping of Wheel of Fortune one time and I tried talking to him during commercial break and he completely ignored me. On the other hand Vanna White is much nicer and answers questions during the commercial break.
The man aged incredibly gracefully and was always a great host. Rest in peace, king
36 years man! I’m so grateful that I got to watch this legendary show everyday as a kid. I miss you so much, Alex!
He isn't even the game show host with the longest run, Washington DC's High School Quiz show "It's Academic" had Mac McGarry as host from its start in 1961 to 2011 when he retired due to illness. Hillary Howard who anchors the news on All News WTOP in the afternoons replaced him. He was also the staff announcer on WRC 4 where it aired until after the current season in 2021-2022. Next year it moves to Public Televison WETA in DC and will be underwritten by the Mitre Group. Giant Food sponsored the show from over 50 years, until 2 years ago when they wanted to focus on food safety.
RIP ALEX TREBEK. YOU TRULY WERE ONE OF A KIND. I'VE GOT A HEAVY HEART AS I AM TYPING THIS.
RIP To a legend. Fly high Alex!
1:24 - The very sounds that got me pumped up and ready to play along with the show, while watching it!
First Regis Philbin and now Alex Trebek. Never thought I’d have to say goodbye to these legendary game show hosts.
This is where it all began...
Rest In Peace, Alex
I remember as a kid walking by the tv while my dad watched "Jeopardy " thinking to myself "Goodness this show is so boring". Years later I found myself watching it and playing the video game.
God called and needed the most knowledge, caring, and giving game show host of all time. Thank you Alex for improving my knowledge of geography, history, and English for over 30 years.
Lovely tribute to a really good man.
I like how the overall presentation of the show hasn't changed all that much since 1984...the songs, sound effects and heck, not just Alex Trabek but even Johnny Gilbert is still there.
For his age, Johnny’s voice is still strong.
@@pschiptunes64 How old is he? He has to be well into his 80’s
@@alexbodi5526 He’s 94
I am old enough to remember the world losing its mind when Alex shaved off his mustache.
I'm old enough to remember when he was a newscaster here in Canada.
It reminds me of a show on The Honeymooners with Ralph Kramden on the $99,000..?..
When was that?
@@TheEmeraldMenOfficial 2001. He was known and parodied for that moustache.
Same. He looked good either way though.
Sweet. Now I know the rules and what the "Jeopardy" actually is.
Roger, I never actually heard the rules spelled out like that

@@doct0rnic Merv Griffin and his wife were travelling on a plane from Minnesota to New York, they were discussing the Quiz Show scandals of the 50s where they gave the answers to popular contestants. @@doct0rnic They also did on the first Tic Tac Dough w/Wink Martindale in 1978 on CBS, and when he started doing it in syndie that same year.
When Art Fleming hosted, he said that once contestants rang in to respond to an answer that they were placed “in jeopardy”, that is in jeopardy of losing money if the response was wrong. Something that wasn’t even the most unique part of the show (that being the answers and questions gimmick) still gave the show its title.
Man! 44 years old when Alex started this legendary show, I don’t think there’s anybody that could ever replace him God bless you Sir, the intro music today not as good as the 84’ intro. RIP Alex.
R.I.P Alex Trebek, he was a good man
I miss the old sound effect when the dollar amounts appeared on the board.
RIP Alex: You Always Had All the Answers!
The whole board is such a cool CRT setup
I would have liked to have seen Wheel Of Fortune go to CRT monitors well before they actually did in 1997. While it may not have been touch-activated, there could have been a puzzle board set up with little buttons by the monitors to activate letters.
This opening music is awesome.
RIP Mr Trebek, thanks 4 the memories
SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!! Glad we're getting all these episodes from the Jeopardy Vault! THIS IS GONNA BE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s cool that a Canadian was the icon of an American show.

And I bet he retired as of Alex's last day. I just don't see him saying anyone else's name after "And now here is the host of Jeopardy..."

@@RetroWinnipeg It was the 80s. You had to be there. And it was very much like a German disco.
The buildup on this version is still the best, although my personal favorite is the "Bongos" version from 92-97.
I LOVE the original theme. It's like the suspense is building up. The original Think Music was way better too.

Rest in Paradise King

I've been watching Jeopardy! for almost 30 years, and frankly the build up on this version of the "Think" theme during contestant intros is still wondrous and unmatched by just about every iteration that has come afterwards (everything except maybe the Bongos version of the theme during the 90s).
I wanna go back to a couple weeks ago when Alex was still alive.
Than you for all the memories over the years. You will be missed Alex.
'An energy demonstrator' 😆 he'll show you how to energy.
Such a lovely beautiful man, R.I.P Alex Trebek🥺🙏🏼♥️
this is an awesome throwback!
After the passing of Trebek... Jepoardy will never be the same...
Jeopardy will NOT be the same without Alex Trebek!! 1940-2020
Sony just needs to pull the plug agter his final episode is aired! Don't replace him!
Managing 30 video feeds for a live display is pretty impressive for 1984
He still looks fantastic despite his illness. God bless him, I hope he pulls through.
The 1984 theme is still the best one. Change my mind.
Nice to see this. Man, it has been a long time.. Glad that he stuck around just as long. 👍
He looks like the typical 80s undercover cop.
I'll admit, growing up on the original Jeopardy with GAME SHOW GOD Art Fleming,it took me a while to warm up to Alex being the new host, but he more than won me over.RIP ALEX
0:23 the first entrance
RIP Alex
In 1984, contestants were giving an encyclopedia set for the second place finisher, and the third place finisher gets a year supply of Rice-a-Roni, The San Francisco Treat. Those were the days back then. Today, they are given cash money for all of their troubles.
Hilarious
Back when there was no lifetime returning champions and Alex had that mustache and Afro in those days, until it was all gone
Harry Engel starting in season 20 in 2003
Chris Finch that was one of the main reasons Jennings and Jeopardy were accused of “fixing” the game. Nevermind that Ken’s episodes aired a little over a month before the end of Season 20.
No wonder one random UA-camr (not me, mind you) thought it was Lionel Richie at first glance. I said back to that user ,"That ain't Lionel Richie, that's Alex Trebek!"
Rohan Padiyar oh yes, mistake a white dude with a black dude with the then Afro and mustache while involved with The Commodores. I applaud you for being a total jackass!
Lifetime returning champions, as you put it, worked on a show like Tic Tac Dough w/Wink Martindale, because that wasn't all one show from beginning to end; they could stop play at any time, hold the game in a cliffhanger (suspense), then come back and resolve it, as many shows/tie games/rounds as a match took. It didn't work (and still doesn't) here on the other hand, because the game is all in one show, and play is not stopped for cliffhangers outside of seeing how far a certain champion (like Ken Jennings) can go.
Alex calls the winner a chicken for not betting big in Final Jeopardy, even the show was clearly a runaway. I miss the 1980s.
Greg Hopkins not much of a gambler
And Johnny Gilbert was there every step of the way. What a team they made 😭
I would've liked to watch the WHOLE episode!
Thank you, Alex ♥️
I can’t believe he’s gone
@@sonnyreid5449 I’m sorry for your loss. My grandfather passed of liver cancer before I met him. He couldn’t afford treatment and lived for a few months before passing. He was pretty young. The new host will be Ken Jennings?
OMG, he was so different!!!😮 R.I.P Alex Trebek 1940-2020!!!🙏😥

I think all of them are still alive. I am not sure tho, there is of course not much info on them on the internet.
Edit: greg and lois are still around, and i think frank is.
If they ever do come back, Johnny should announce it like he did way back in 1984. “Now entering the studio are today’s contestants...”

the most iconic voice
Aww man, that sound at 1:24 takes me back to my childhood. RIP Mr Trebek.
Alex's voice became more mellow over the years, and not quite as excited from his days of doing High Rollers and Concentration. This first episode makes him sound like a teen on their first date with a girl, high pitched. Yet, before he came to do game shows here, I watched him on the CBC-TV doing a version of Canadian version of the College Bowl (or it may had been a high school version), called Reach For The Top.
Another point in watching this first episode, the camera zooming in was much more like watch the NBC Daytime version of Jeopardy with Art Fleming, instead of the electronic squeeze zoom effect for each clue, and no one applauding after they got each answer correct. That took up a lot of time and they never finished Double Jeopardy.
Thank you Alex ❤
0:10 that guys sweating bullets
I'm surprised at how clean and high quality this video is, especially from 1984.
