I think I need to address some things said in this video. I don't have some hidden agenda. I don't have a bias against the French team, and I'm not trying to stir up trouble, so let's just get that out of the way first.
    1. The MEN'S French team is not as good as they should be. Here are some statistics: France hasn't had a male world champion at -60, -66, -73 in over 20 years. 10 years ago at -81, Loic Pietri was WC. At -90 and -100 it's the same story as -60, -66, and -73. The one outlier is Teddy. So in 20 years, France has had 2 world champions. For a bit of perspective, these countries have had more that two champions in the same period: KOR, NED, UZB, JPN, MGL, RUS, BRA, GEO. Tied for 2 champions with France are ESP, GER, KAZ.
    2. the +78 French women aren't that good. Yeah this was probably a bad comment by me and shows how little I pay attention to this category. I went through and had a look at DICKO and TOLOFUA's last 10 or so contests and they're definitely throwing people. Sorry about that.
One last thing. Just because France does well in the teams doesn't mean that my points in 1 are wrong. For example, Gaba threw Hashimoto. Great throw. But Gaba has never medalled at a Grand Slam. The team event is PERFECT for the French team because 3/6 members have to be female and France has the strongest female team in the world. This is why GEO is trying to hard to build some strong females to help them through it. Also, -60, -66, -48 and -52 competitors basically cannot compete in the teams event. Food for thought.
Also, keep it peaceful here. I did this exact same video last year. Too much racism and hate in the comments. Just keep it to yourself and keep things positive please.

Your understanding of men's Judo is correct.
However, your understanding of women's Judo is wrong.
The French women's team is clearly not the strongest in the world.
Just looking at the results of the individual competitions at this year's world chapionships, isn't that obvious?
There are only two weight classes in which France clearly outperforms Japan: 63 and 78.
Niizoe has a hard time with France's #2, Pinot, but has a dominant record against France's #1, Gahié.
Agbegnenou's outstanding performance gives the impression that the entire French women's team is just overwhelming the others.

      Bonsoir!

    These team competitions are awesome.
With the lowest weight class being -73kg, Japan's dominance is reduced as they are less of a force in the heavier weight classes, which means we get some close fought matchs even when on paper Japan are by the far the strongest nation.
And I imagine for the olympics Teddy will fight in the over 90 for the french team rather than some random -100kg dude. So even more of a battle for Japan.

Wow just unbelievable, it was very close..
I can't understand the decisions made by the referees, especially the last. I would understand when she tried to armbar while not on the floor. Also, the ko uchi maki komi was taught to me the same way and my trainer still does this the same way today.
Btw saito makes a very kind and respectful impression on me, also he did well, and I'm excited to see him more often in the future.

I completely understand that attempted kouchi maki komi was penalized, because she literally put the whole body against her leg. That could have ended badly, it is dangerous for the knee, I wouldn't say it is really a good idea banning leg grabs all together, but banning leg grabs in the way that you throw your whole body weight at opponent's knee is not OK. You can seriously injure them, knee wounds are no joke. I don't mean to disrespect, but I disagree and think that kind of technique is OK to be penalized in sport. Keep your knees healthy!

If you learn about the history of judo in France and the way in which this sport is socially integrated, you will understand why France is, after Japan, the 2nd Judo nation in the world.
In France, unlike Japan, judo for children is not primarily teach as a competitive sport. It is primarily where parents send their children to do some gymnastics and learn discipline and respect for others. It was the influence of Shozo Awazu that gave French judo its “soul”. Which means that there are a lot of judo practitioners at very young ages. A very large pyramid base in number. And the best, who like the competition aspect, stay.

You can make incidental arm/hand contact with the leg *only* if you also are gripping with the same side hand. So you can't just have your hand floating out in space and use your elbow to clamp on the leg. If she had some sort of grip she would have been fine. A classic Kouchi Makikomi from an ippon seoi grip is fine, for instance. Shinjiro Sasaki has some great videos showing the still-legal technique on his IG feed.

It was a real rollercoaster but I regret that ko uchi makikomi isn't allowed, I don't find anything dangerous about it. Judo in competition is now so different than all the throws we learned. They say they want to promote beautiful judo but the winning team won on penalties not on a throw.
I would also like them to switch categories from one year to another, to really involve the whole team, that would be interesting.

Grabbing the leg for that beautiful ko-uchi-gari-makkikomi or for a kata-gurumma must remain allowed... That's part of judo!

Typically "i" will be "ee", which is presumably why it is "ee" in Hiragana for example. If you're reading a random European language you will be better served by using the Hiragana pronunciation than by using the naive English one!

Great video but I completely agree with the conclusion. I feel everything is forbiden in Judo now, half of the techniques I learned when I was a teenager are now banned, we should not call this sport Judo anymore... (One of my favorite, Teguruma is banned :( ) .Some of these ban was supposed to make judo less relying on strengh (like Georgian wrestling type of throws ) but I feel it did not really achieve anything, strengh is still very important in Judo. Now the rules are more complicated and ppl not familar with the Sport don't understand what's happening, like what happened in the last game is just ridiculous (way too much room for interpretation and obviously bring a lot of controversy with it).

If her family is Muslim it might be the latter because there was a woman named Hayme Hatun, who was the grandmother of the founder of the Ottoman Empire (Osman I) and that is how her name is pronounced iirc. College history for the win....

I’m not really as well versed on the judo rules I I should be. But my main experience is in BJJ. And from a my BJJ perspective that wasn’t even anywhere close to what a flying armbar should be. Her hips were too far back, and there was no real isolation or posture break. It absolutely looked like a tomoe nage attempt and she just went to the next available thing. I don’t think it should’ve been a penalty as in my opinion, she wasn’t going for a flying armbar first and just transitioned to it.
That aside. Great match. Great video. I love this channel! 52:13

So glad the Japanese team won. Good to see the masters of the shido shido'd out. Can't believe how badly Nizoe moves her feet, IMO she'd have no chance against a Judoka with decent ashi-waza. Great result in the end.

@@kokka25 I will re-watch, but intentionally 'planking' with both arms entangled is almost like suicide to me, and I really don't think a top Judoka like Hashi would be so careless. The tatami will not save you if all your weight and momentum from you and tori are using your neck as a fulcrum. Several are the serious injuries I've seen from this motion.

Do you know why some of the French and Japanese "stars" didn't take part? Like Abe siblings, Agbegnenou and Riner? I'm aware that there are different weight classes but it's happened where a lighter judoka has fought against a heavier one. I remember Agbegnenou beat her heavier Japanese opponent in the Olympics team event. And Riner certainly could have fought against Saito.
