Finally someone who doesn't spread the RTV with his fingers. I usually finger tight first, wait an hour then torque full spec, wait another hour before filling and starting. Good job there man.
This was the perfect time to install the pan spacer. That’s what I did with mine. Z1 oil pan spacer and you get 1 qt of oil more and no leaks after 50k
I remember when I was a kid my neighbor fixed his oil pan leak with a cereal box.. Dude spent 3 hours cutting out a perfect gasket..I’m not sure how long it lasted but I remember thinking he’s crazy goin through all that work to fix it with a cereal box
Year late but I've used gasket maker spread in layers on a piece of cardboard or smooth plastics. Then using a cricket cutter and cutting perfect gaskets with it for old shit like my 85 200x
After the oil pan has been removed it should be the same as draining the oil for an oil change. I would add the specified amount listed in your owners manual and check the level on the dip stick
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage I’m thinking of doing it this Labor Day because I’m headed out of town so I want to leave it to dry but idk if it’s ok to add the oil and crank it or if I can just add the oil and let it dry and crank the car after I return
Its usually one or the other. If you find imperfections in the pan I have spread a small coating on the pan as well- only enough to spread with a finger, but it has to be an equal coating all around
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage thanks for the reply I was looking at other threads and I’m seeing the same answer. I’m going to do this job during the weekend. Going to use the permatex and follow this video, thanks for the upload! Very very helpful.
@@TrueBullsfan23 mine is still doing fantastic. No leaks! just don’t bend the pan on removal and don’t chip the paint on the inside or you’ll have to remove all the paint. Good luck!
Why do you need to remove all the paint if it chips on the mating surface? Won’t an extensive cleaning of the inside of the pan clear any possible paint chips?
It’s always a good idea to use a torque wrench. It’s only m 6.5 foot pounds (most foot pound torque wrenches start at 20 so you may need to get a smaller inch pound torque wrench. There is also an upper gasket for the block as I recall. That’s more involved disassembly and not as important as the oil is not always around that seal.
I’ve heard nothing but conflicting info on this shit. I’ve been a Nissan tech for only 9 months and I’ve somehow yet to do a lower pan on anything.. I’m trying to put a cheap aftermarket pan on my project Z right now and all the techs are telling me NEVER use black RTV and never use paper gaskets, they are telling me to use gray RTV
Black rtv is mostly for oil and works great. I’ve had it on the diff of my mach 1 for 10 years without any leaks. Gray is more for timing covers and parts with a lot of vibration. The reason not to use brake parts cleaner is if it’s a painted surface that will flake and get junk stuck in the oil pickup tube.
Take off the plastic bottom cover of the car first. It’s a bunch of 10mm bolts, then you should see the pan as shown in this video. It’s part of the engine, so don’t go too far back or it will be the transmission pan
Hey I got the same car I have a leak coming from idk where and I wanted to see if you had any ideas also I know this is an old video but hope I can get a reply

lol. Making his own gasket. They used to be made of cork, so I guess it was close enough ha ha.

I read on the forums to use felpro gasket AND sealant but I chose to listen to your comments and just do the sealant
Cant i just do both?
@@christiandy9547 it's not recommended. That's what I thought also.
@@Beliefacy ooop my dumbass just did both rn 😂😅
@@christiandy9547 how did it turned out? I just did both too cuz it only makes sense to me. Felpro gasket and RTV, double security.
I have to replace the same oil pan for our 2 Murano, mine is bad as the pan has rusted ., Thanks for the video.
Thank you for showing where to lift and support the vehicle for safety …..
I think you wanted us to bend the pan! lol thank you for the video
You have some oil weeping above the pan area also. Do you know where that is coming from? Valve cover gasket?
You ever figure this out?
Definitely informative, step by step 👌 love it
why not the optimum stuff, they are newer than the ultra product line. Thanks Danny.
I have had great luck with Permatex
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage no, i mean Permatex makes a Optimum line and Ultra line.
By any chance when do I add oil to the car and would I need more than the regular amount to lubricate the engine correctly

Would it be recommended to also get a metal oil pan gasket and also apply this permatex sealant? Or is the sealant enough to prevent oil leakage

Just a heads up, this vid says 12-14 FOOT pounds and I’ve seen other videos and online say 76 INCH pounds.
so what is it
Love the content
did you lift one side only or lift two sides?
Do you need a oil pan gasket when installing a new oil pan or just the seal or both?
I used the rtv sealant only. It’s been great
Awesome vid really helped me out

Hi, do I need 1/2" or 3/4" torque wrench?
Hi how you doing the transmission pan on my g35 is leaking also but idk how to look for it 😕

Thanks it ended up being the transmission oil pan also another question what kind of transmission oil you use for it also for the motor thanks
What happens when a bolt makes a snap when tightening
It could be cross threading
Why use gasket maker instead of getting a gasket. Is it easier?
The pans tend to bend when being removed and gasket maker fills in the gaps better
Loved it thanks! Would you say the trickiest part is to get the pan back on?
yeah, without smearing the gasket maker, but it worked great and no leaks!
I’ve also heard from Nissan techs to use metal gasket scrapers, and use tons of brake cleaner.. why is there so much conflicting info on this ugh
Really helped thanks !!!
If I bought a new gasket do I still need to use the gasket maker?
No, the gasket itself is all that is necessary if you have it. But if the pan is at all bent a small layer of rtv may also help
💯
Can I still get by with permatex ultra grey ?
Yes
That’s odd, I used brake cleaner and it did not make the paint chip what so ever
On your next oil change look for any signs of paint debris
geesh mine is leaking about a quart a month. idk if its the pan or the rear main.. and this vid is years old lol.
Fixed mine twice and it steal keeps leaking smh
The pan is probably bent. On my other G35 I put it flush on a metal box and hammered it flush 😉 Make sure to remove all paint since it will chip it
Danny Johnson’s Garage thank you I will check it out !
I’m surprised they don’t just use a simple gasket
