I have several of Glen’s tongs. All work for the purpose intended and are of high quality. I’ve been using them for over a year and they look and function like new. If you need tongs, hammers or other top quality tools Glen can deliver. Thank you.
I was taught to lighten up the hammer blows as the piece cools. And honestly, I never swing my hammer so hard like some others I see. I appreciate your support. Good luck in your work. Glen
Golden tongs :) I like your unique "simple" design. Best tongs are those that works, so true... -> Blacksmithing is 10% hammering and 90% finding the right tongs :)
Torbjörn Åhman I have spent the past two years advising new smiths to forget about anvil obsession and forge mania when they begin acquiring equipment. You have shown how easy it is to make a cheap forge that works. Any chunk of steel can serve as an anvil. However, there is NO replacement or alternative to a good pair of tongs. It’s a tough message for some to hear. Tongs aren’t as sexy as anvils or forges to new smiths. Once you have done it a while, good tongs inspire tears of joy.
Torbjorn, Yes, I'm the man with the Golden Tongs - could be a movie villain if James Bond were a blacksmith and not a spy. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. Your videos are meticulous and inspiring. Thanks. Glen
Lou, Very well said. While I don't discount how important a proper anvil is (for those who are beyond being beginners), if you can't hold hot steel well you can't hit it well. Thanks for your support. Glen
"Elegant" is how I would describe your tongs, not "elegant" as someone might describe a woman's gown for the ball but "elegant"as Carl Sagan would describe the laws of nature...thank you for sharing what you do,it is very well appreciated!
Everything is fine here. It's funny that you say that because when I was filming this video, the whole building started rocking and my anvils looked like they were set on a giant bowl of jello. I was gong to keep the footage in but decided not to. Thanks for watching and for your concern. Glen
Peter, I've made some recent changes to my tong designs. I always seem to be doing this, for improvement, but often just to keep things interesting. Thanks for your support. Glen
Neil, My tongs are ever changing. I always think my latest style is best but I've done this long enough to know that I'll change again, sometimes trying to improve the design, sometimes just to keep things interesting. Hope your blacksmithing is going well. Glen
I really like the look of these tongs, particularly the way the handles are aligned over each other. Makes for a neat tidy appearance. Still not sure what the purpose of the indents you make on one or sometimes both sides of the pivot area?
The indents aren't completely necessary but they help outline the pivot area and make it much easier to offset the jaws and pivot to size the tongs for whatever size stock they will hold. Rather than indents, most people will offset front and back of the pivot area on the anvil face but the idea is the same. Thanks for watching.
Dennis, Hi, I am very pleased that you are happy. I hope they serve you well. If you have any questions, you know you can always contact me. Thanks. Glen
Peter, I've made more than few tongs so I should know a reasonable amount in this area. But I'm lacking in other areas of blacksmithing for sure. Blacksmithing is such a varied craft... Thanks for watching and for your support. Glen
Thanks for watching and for your kind comment. I really like your channel; the variety of your forgings. In fact, I will sub right now. We currently have a similar number of subs - maybe we should do some sort of collaboration, if at all possible. Regardless, good luck in your work. Glen
NIIIIICE! The true sign of a Master......consistency.......(at least what I have been told)........and handsome tooling too! Each time I make them....they all have their own Character....(cough cough)......flaws.... :)....but mine work for something.....paperweights on the bench, etc......if nothing else...... as a benchmark to get better.......I occasionally watch ferrier videos and the good ones amaze me with forming nuances on the horse shoes for different purposes....done so easily.....
Yes, consistency, especially with tongs, is the key. And the old adage that practice makes perfect really applies. A lot of my customers are capable of making good tongs but it's just not their thing. Others, who are advanced and have more overall blacksmithing skill than me just find tong making bewildering. Anyway, thanks.
I'm gonna leave the tong making to the pro's. I made a mess of a pair today. I was trying to make V bit tongs. I see where I went wrong now. I didn't split the bits before riveting them together.
Thank you very much. My tongs are always in a state of flux - I change the style / way I go about making them as I see fit. Good luck in your work. Glen
These tongs are very short in length, wouldn’t be long heating up taking stuff in and out of the gas forge. I like the finish though wire brushing them with a brass wire brush brings up the metal to a good finish
Well done, maestro, great work. Greetings from Greece. What kind of iron did you use? (SKD61 or SKD11 or .... ) How many millimeters are the irons for the tong? And what kind of iron do you use for anvil?( SKD61 or SKD11 or .... )
Nikos, Glad you like this. The tongs are made for 1018 mild steel and the lengthen the blanks is 260mm (I like shorter tongs). My block style anvils are made form 4145 steel. The only tool in this video that is SKD-61 is the round punch. Thanks for watching. Glen
Love your tong videos! I believe you have the most unique and recognizable style of forging, Did you feel you needed a more positive feel on the rein end than the way you did it before? Thanks Glen! Jerry
Jerry, You make a good point. I really do like tongs to have "a positive feel". That is, I like them to have resistance on the handles when I grip my stock. As for making changes, I'm always experimenting with my tongs. Sometimes it's for improving, sometimes it's just to keep things interesting. And for me, when in doubt make a tong video! Thanks. Glen
I can’t get both tongs to look like each other. One looks like my ugly sister and the other looks like a ruptured duck. But I’m getting better, at least now the rivet hole is not over halfway offset.
Abby, The key, I think, is consistency. I will often count hammer blows when working one blank and repeat the same number on the second blank. Good luck. Thanks. Glen
Glen GS Tongs I really never thought of that. I always just tried to make them look alike. I’ve probably got 100 pounds of Iron out in the woods. I’d usually tell the Iron “You’re defective! Get out” and it would get flung. I’ll try your way. I’ll let you know.
I have several of Glen’s tongs. All work for the purpose intended and are of high quality. I’ve been using them for over a year and they look and function like new. If you need tongs, hammers or other top quality tools Glen can deliver. Thank you.
George, Once again, thanks for your recommendation. Really helps... Glen
Hey Glen, they look awesome. I can’t wait to get them. Thanks a lot buddy
Dennis, I appreciate your support. Glen
Very nice work sir! Love watching you work and try different ways of doing things.
Marc, With tongs, I'm always thinking how I can change things up. Thanks.
love your little hammer blows! like the smallest of adjustments, the sign of a true perfectionist. keep up the great work.
I was taught to lighten up the hammer blows as the piece cools. And honestly, I never swing my hammer so hard like some others I see. I appreciate your support. Good luck in your work. Glen
Beautiful to watch you work, so clean and precise.

Great craftsmanship as usual! Love seeing your work!!
Love your style of tongs minimalist
George, I'm definitely a minimalist. Don't need much, don't want much... Thanks.
You must be a machine because your tongs look machine made. Thats a compliment by the way. Nice work.
Bravo beautiful set of tongs sir!!! On amother not looking at pics seen one of tubal cain sitting at his anvil ...keep on rocking em out
George, Maybe my style of sitting while forging is catching on. Just need to be very cautious though... Thanks for your support. Glen
Gotta be the best looking tongs out there. Very nice work.
Martin, I really appreciate your kind comment about my tongs. I think others may be better but I'll take it. Thanks. Glen

Hi Glen, hope your ok after that big earthquake, no damage. Like your work & your tools.

Great job as usual Glen.
Craig, Thanks for your support. Glen
Nice to see you use the traditional anvil, it's probably a little lonley down on the end! LOL Thanks as always.
Floyd, I really need to get that anvil in proper use. Set it up in front of me for some videos and give it a workout. Thanks. Glen
Enjoyed your video and gave it a thumbs up also
Russell, Much appreciated. Glen

What kind of anvil is that. It looks awesome
Beautiful work, per usual!
Jacob, For me, when in doubt, make a tong video. Glad you like this. Thanks for your support. Glen
Fantastic tong advice but I do like some curves.. Great job Glen... Martin
Marin, I just think that for me and some others, the fancier we try to get the more problems we can potentially create. Thanks as always. Glen
As always outstanding craftsmanship. Sry I didn’t win the Lotto the other day. I would fund you forever. Lol. Keep up the amazing work.
Larry, Now I really wish you win the lottery! Likewise, if I ever hit it big I'll be sure to spread the wealth. Thanks for your support. Glen
You have a unique anvil. What is it?
Hi Mike, The small block style anvils I use are my own designs which I had made here in Taiwan where I live. Thanks for watching.
Hey Glen, I got my tongs. They work great. Thanks a lot
Dennis, Hi, I am very pleased that you are happy. I hope they serve you well. If you have any questions, you know you can always contact me. Thanks. Glen

What kind of steel do you use for your tongs.
Doug, I almost always use 1018 mild steel. Thanks for watching. Glen
very nice work as always Glen
I appreciate your support. Glen
Hey ho GST. Maybe I try to make tongs ur style. Momently I am happy with the one I have. Nice job again as expected. Greetings from Germany
Give it a go. There are so many ways to go about making tongs, no one method seems better than the others. Thanks.
You made it look so easy!!!
Nice work, but I’m sure you knew that already! 😆

Why are you using very conical punches after slotting the central rivet hole? Why didn't you use a tapered cylindrical drift?
Noah, This is my habit more than anything else coupled with the style of my tooling / shorter punches and drifts. Thanks.

Easy just to draw out the reins
H.Walker or buy the right size tongs in the first place
Can you forge a giant fishing hook?
Did you ask this before? Someone previously asked a similar question. Something to think about... Thanks.
Good tong advice.
