"I'm Only Happy When It Rains." Another great song with Shirley Manson rocking it out.
My first thought exactly. I'm Only Happy When it Rains. You should you hear James Hatfield's cover of it :)
Or “Shut your mouth”
Yep yep 🤟🏾🤟🏾
@@alexdolan6046 if you like James Hatfield's, you'll really love James Hetfield's!
I feel like "Push It" is the best one to introduce them to Garbage's versatility from this.
"I Think I'm Paranoid" Is my Favorite track of Garbage. It's always on playlist.
Hellz yeah🤘My employees have to listen to it at least once a week😆👍
Yes, mine too. I also love their version of Thirteen
I was so nervous when I saw Garbage on here. This album literally saved my life by keeping me from suicide. And I was scared that you guys wouldn't like it. So happy it hit right with you guys.
Lol. Emo
No laughing matter. Whatever works, works. Good for you.
@@jamesmantooth7364 lol
This whole album was lovely. Heard it from a friend when I was in the Air Force. The song "Stroke of Luck" really hit a chord with me.
So good to hear you write this. This album also changed me & I'm so happy it changed you for the better. Shirley has done an amazing job her whole career. She really speaks to so many of us. 🥰
Let us know how you're doing now, friend!.
"#1 Crush" is a GREAT Garbage song to check out!
Yes it is so good!
My favorite
Romeo&Juliet soundtrack!
So glad to see Garbage on here. I feel like they don't get mentioned much these days. Definitely an underappreciated band.
Even back in the 90's I felt like they were not mentioned like they should have been. It was always Nirvana, Pearl Jam or Smashing Pumpkins. Garbage had a tour when they opened for The Smashing Pumpkins. My friends were all going for The Smashing Pumpkins. I was the only one that wanted to go because of Garbage.
@@jimc7445 their lack of popularity with the normies was precisely part of what attracted metalheads to Garbage too heh.
Glad you liked this. The band is all producers. The drummer Butch Vig was the hot producer at the time. He produced Nirvana - Nevermind and Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream. Shirley was a young Scottish singer who's band appeared once live on MTV. She gets a call from the biggest producer to fly to Wisconsin to work on some songs. They had these weird electronic samples from other projects that they said were Garbage sounds that they were starting to piece together into songs. You can hear one of those in the prechorus section. She was the right piece and they made a great album. Listen to VOW off this same album. Shirley is an amazing singer.
Angelfish
Butch Vig is amazing
Deee-Lite was the band that did "Groove Is In The Heart".
Garbage has such a unique sound. With three producers backing her, the sound quality of their albums is off the charts.
Also try:
Only Happy When It Rains
As Heaven Is Wide
I Think I'm Paranoid
Push It
The Trick Is To Keep Breathing
You Look So Fine
What's the Bond song again? Tomorrow never dies or The world is not enough?
@@DjDarkD World Is Not Enough
Push It was the song I was trying to think of that they should do!
@@lakeshoresubtleties Vow.
YESSSS. Literally my favorite songs from them!
The line “You Pretend You’re Bored,” coming on the heels of Grunge was so profound.
“The Breeders” is a great band for this “Women who Rock” series.
I love "Aloha" from them! Such a cool sound.
The song Ryan is talking about in the beginning of the song is “Groove is in the Heart” by Deee-Lite. It came out on their 1990 album World Clique. they were headed by Lady Miss Kier, another vocal powerhouse. That song and others from that album had Bootsy Collins on Bass, as well as Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker from Parliament’s Horny Horns.
off topic, Shirley Manson played a T1000 Terminator on the TV series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles". She killed it. ;-)
One of the shows I've most been annoyed about getting cancelled
@@Stringer13ell yeah, that one and FireFly. Summer Glau was awesome in both too.
The Drummer Butch Vig was the Producer of Nirvana’s Nevermind.
Also The drum was sampled from a Clash song.
I don't think I noticed before now that the drums are Train In Vain
Me neither but it's so obvious now!
I never noticed before, but now I can't unhear it.
I think that’s credited in the album liner notes…that the drum loop came from Train In Vain.
Train in Vain, I believe
BTW Garbage did the theme for the bond film The world is not enough.
Fantastic tune!
It was an anthem for me when I was a teen in highschool. I was a big girl, a punk/goth girl and it was my song to the cheerleader types.
Those were the days, I bet it made you a stronger person. The roles are reversed now in high school. All the big girls are worshipped and the cheerleaders are boys with wigs.
She was a big boned girl from Southern Alberta, you just couldn't call her small.
Whatever one's musical tastes: great lyric from KD Lang and the Reclines
Hi.. Greedings from overseas.. In this way try some strange Kind of music,, *German..
:"Jennifer Rostock - Kaleidoskop" (.. Can you See me.? It, s the Refrain.. For unseen poeple)... Or I saw a US Band here in a small Club
:"war on women - pleasure and the beast"... Enjoy without understanding lyrics
Check out Skunk Anansie - I promise you won't be disappointed
I Can Dream and Selling Jesus from their first album are so raw and powerful.
Skin is one of the best female rock vocalists ever IMO
'Nothing matters'
The song she did with Iommi was really cool too
Skin is such an amazing vocalist! Skunk Anansie has songs all over the rock spectrum - definitely gotta be something these guys would like. But no matter what song they listen to, they can't deny her voice!
"Secretly" is AMAZING 😍
Probably my favorite female singer ever. Such emotion with everything she sings. Try 100 ways to be a good girl or, for a double treat, licking creme (technically sevendust featuring Skin) two of the most emotional singers in history just murdering the mess out of a track.
The story behind the bands name is when they first started to create their sound, they were mixing grunge sounding guitars with different electronic sounds, and when a friend of theirs came into the studio to hear what they were working on, the person straight up said it sounded like garbage.
My wife and I have been huge Garbage fans since they first hit the scene, so it was very cool to see you guys enjoying this song. Some other songs you might want to check out: Only Happy When It Rains, The World Is Not Enough, Push It, I Think I'm Paranoid, & When I Grow Up.
Hell yes. Long overdue and super underrated band. They are still putting out great material.
yeppers!!!!❤
I used to test the thresholds of my car stereo using their song #1 Crush. You should definitely check that one out.
This was part of a huge pool in the 90's. The Breeders - Cannonball, The Cardigan's - My Favorite Game, Veruca Salt - I liked Volcano Girls a hell of alot more than Seether. Republica - Ready to Go. Sonic Youth - Bull in the Heather. PJ Harvey - Down by The Water. Just a small sample. Hell ya could throw in Mazzy Star - Fade Into You in there to cover a large spread. Tori Amos even flirted with it on Raspberry Swirl.
Cardigans don't deserve to be on your list, they were a one hit wonder. I DID like Lovefool and had a major crush on the singer when I was a youngin but they still don't deserve to be in that list of legends.
Amazing bands all of those. I'd also add one rather obscure band: Splashdown from that era. Check out their songs: Ironspy and Karma Slave.
PJ Harvey is as talented an artist as you will ever have on this channel. Period. Musically dominant.
PJ:
Long Snake Moan
Dress
A Perfect Day, Elise
Teclo
Rid of Me (live, especially)
Also, if you dig this Garbage tune, a dark horse request, perhaps, is Curve (duo, fronted by Toni Halliday). She was a precursor to Shirley Manson. Straight forward. A blast in your face.
Curve:
Wish You Dead (personal favorite)
Fait Accompli (will have more listens, it was a single)
Yes!!! Love P.J
Yes! PJ Harvey!
Polly!
Totally forgot about Curve, but they are fantastic!
I love how you can hear Shirleys Scottish accent a bit when she sings.
Often Non-American singers will hide their accent, which may actually feel natural to them considering that there is a lot of American entertainment media in a lot of western countries.
But still, it’s refreshing to hear someone different like Shirley.
Check out Portishead or Elastica next!
Portishead!!
Godhead from 2021…❤
Their first 2 albums are both complete listen throughs. Manson's sultry vocals and the group's clear awareness of how to produce catchy hits is what drove the millions of record sales. Great band.
It blows my mind that they ended up in the memory hole. They did a James Bond theme song!
I've gone through half of my life with this bass groove in my head
I always learn something new about a song I've known my whole life that I never even thought about when I watch this channel.
The drum loop was actually based upon the intro to Train In Vain by The Clash :)
What a surprise!!!! Garbage is a really good band!!!
Milk
Crush
Really good songs.
Garbage is one of my all time favourite bands! If you want another of their songs with the same vibe check out "Queer" or if you want to hear them rock out "Only Happy When It Rains" or "Vow".
Yes! I was also going to suggest “Queer”, which is an under-appreciated track. But those are all quality choices.
Totally forgot about Queer....must do
The groove at the beginning was actually directly lifted from 'Train In Vain' by The Clash.
Great reaction as always guys, and delighted to hear Scotland get a shout out! 😊
'I think I'm paranoid' is another great song by them that is a bit on the heavier side.
It always struck me how Shirley’s talking voice has a very thick Scottish accent but her singing voice doesn’t
@@elosoguapo8137 A lot of British singers are like that too, Heavy talking accents and then no accent when they sing.
I came here to say “ i’m only happy when it rains”, too!
Yup, this is intro Garbage, but oh yeah, keep going with them. Only Happy When It Rains is the big one off that first album, but if you want a full picture: #1 Crush, Push It, The World Is Not Enough, Run Baby Run, and You Look So Fine.
Big one for y'all is gonna be The Trick Is To Keep Breathing, which is just the best groove track in their entire discography.
(also if you're doing Hole again, Boys on the Radio or Petals is the move. You're welcome.)
AND ABSOLUTELY check out Metric. Emily Haines is my 2nd favorite female lead, and actually toured w Garbage this last year, along w Noel Gallagher from Oasis (90s)…❤
I LOVE this band. So glad you gents enjoyed this one. I used to rock this song like crazy back in the 90s. Shirley Manson was my #1 Crush.
When the distorted guitar kicked it, you both did duck face at exactly the same moment 😅 I really love Garbage, and the singer is from where I live. Their latest album, No Gods No Masters, is phenomenal!
The Story behind the band coming together:
Butch Vig was/is a major producer and studio engineer.
Around the time the birth of their band was in its burgeoning experimental phase but happening, he saw Shirley Manson in a music video on MTV and was immediately captivated saying, let’s get her. She needs to be in our band.
The band she was in at the time, Angelfish was already on it’s way to implosion due to personal dramas and creative differences.
They flew her in from Scotland and she came to audition but they did not click it all.
You see, Shirley Manson is by nature a very shy and withdrawn person with performance anxieties.
They weren’t ready to give up yet, so the band suggested they go out for drinks to break the ice and settle the nerves.
It worked wonders and the second time around they made magic in the studio and Shirley became their official front woman.
Initially being less comfortable with herself and her abilities, she let the rest of the band do most of the songwriting.
Moments after their formation, the news that Kurt Cobain was found dead came and Butch, being a personal friend and one of his producers behind the album Nevermind, was crushed. Shirley as well as the other members were also greatly affected by his death.
They made it through and continued to grow, with Shirley Manson getting more confident in her songwriting abilities and finding her true sense of personal identity.
TWENTY SEVEN years later and they are still making music and releasing albums.
I HIGHLY recommend their second album, Version 2.0.
In my personal opinion that album is pretty much a masterpiece and arguably, their magnum opus.
Definitely worth a listen.
Just saw Garbage live and Shirley and Co killed it!
The piece that sounds like “Groove is in the Heart” by Dee-Lite in this song, is “Train in Vain” by The Clash. That’s the sample Garbage used.
I love their song milk. Super melancholic very somber but super cool sounding. Another great song from that album is fix me now, awesome groove
She is not talking about herself. A great song off their second album is called Special.
Janis Joplin, Pink, Arch Enemy, in This Moment. Suzi Quatro, Lacuna Coil and Warlock. Just saying.
Agree with all of those
All of those + Ani Difranco
Janis Joplin for sure!
cherry lips is a banger. so damn catchy i had it stuck in my head for like a year when i was a fledgling prepubescent peasant. you guys have probably heard it as well, it was everywhere back then
Played it on a game called Amplitude
This is a good one. Vow is their best record in my opinion. It’s dark, the hook is catchy asf bringing that ‘90s nostalgia vibe
Great song and album! Vow, Push It, Only Happy When It Rains, When I Grow Up are also good songs.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs -- Heads Will Roll
That Hole song you guys started at the end was Malibu…great song!
I'm sure someone else has already mentioned this but Butch Vig, the drummer for Garbage was the producer for Nirvana's album "Nevermind"
Great band. Shirley a Scottish goddess with that soul and sultriness and jaded ironic detachment, Butch and the other two guys already famous producers and you can hear the connections to other 90s music, like NIN and some other greats, though you wouldn't guess Butch's Nirvana connection from this.
Definitely worth getting more into.
Elastica was also pretty good back then
Whole album is solid
I have never heard these guys before but I love it👍
Just for the anecdote, the Garbage drummer, Butch Vig, was the producer of "Nevermind" from Nirvana and "Gish" from The Smashing Pumpkins...
You should try Melissa Auf Der Maur "Followed the Waves" or "Skin Receiver"
I think zombie from the cranberries would be a good one for you guy's to react to.
For your women who rock series, Have you guys listened to The Cardigans yet? Not “Love Fool”. She has my favorite voice ever. My favorite game is a cool song similar to this style from Garbage. But I guarantee George would love any song off the album “Long Gone Before Daylight”. A little softer style, but all great songs. super sexy.
The Cardigans - Erase/Rewind
Garbage was playing at Civic Hall, Wolverhampton, England on there tour called beautifulgarbage in 2002 i person was at front row
was amazing to watch
How does George let you know that he knows way more music than you? He brings Tame Impala into the conversation. Keep it up. Educate the people.
Godhead by Garbage 2022 … hands down will blow u away!
Pj Harvey!
A Perfect Day Elise would be an awesome reaction 😁
Yeah, when I saw you were doing Garbage, I got ready for a good time. One of the best songs out of the '90s.
#1 Crush is another good one by Garbage
This was one of the best concerts that I've ever been to 😍
I saw them a couple of years ago and they were the band on before the headliner. I was thinking, "Eh, am I really gonna like a Garbage set?" They completely stole the show. Best band that played that night.
Garbage is my favorite band of the '90s. It's such a shame so few people today know who they are. Great to see you guys getting into them here.
A lot of good songs of theirs are mentioned, I would add ‘I think I’m Paranoid’. Shirley also sang a Bond movie theme song, ‘The World is not Enough’.
@4:19 speaking of Gorillaz, Tame Impala featured on their new song New Gold a couple weeks ago. Definitely worth a listen/reaction
I've actually never heard this either but the drums sounds like "Train in Vain" by The Clash such a creative way to incorporate another band's stuff as your own
"Cannonball" Breeders Please check it out Garbage is great.
I remember my high school days when I listen to this. Still one of my favorites. 'Only happy when it rains' and 'Sugar' are also some good songs from Garbage.
Garbage's sound was loosely based on that of the underground band Curve, which combined the ethereal guitar noise of shoegaze with the pop appeal of Madonna
Wholesale stole curve sound. Check out fait accompli
No clue how I missed this band but I had a temporary Sirius XM membership on a new car and caught this song on the Alt Rock channel on the way to work. I pulled over, figured out who this was
(I'd never heard of Garbage), wrote the name down and searched them when I got to work. I realized that I knew I'm Only Happy When It Rains but I was genuinely embarrassed that I wasn't familiar with them.......Oh, and after about 5 videos......yeah I fell in love with Shirley Manson like every other guy does.
I saw them in 99 with Alanis Morrissette. When they did this song Shirley intro’d it with a Spice Girls chorus of “I’ll tell you what I want what I really really want” … And then the band went into this song. It’s dis on pre-social media attention whores… also, Shirley was one of the best front men I’ve ever seen in rock ‘n’ roll! Amazing show live! Not to mention the drummer, Butch… Produced Smashing Pumpkins first album Gish and Nirvanas…never mind
Shirley Manson was a unique person and love her sound. "I'm only happy when it rains" is a must...love that song 🕊️💗
Such a great song.
I haven’t heard this song in at least 15 years. My dad loved Garbage back in the day. Euro-grunge. Feels like spice Girls and NIN had a kid.
This fab album got me through some dark times when I was very young. It still sounds fantastic. The groove of the whole album is worth a listen guys. Beautiful production values start to finish. It very much preempted the social media age beautifully thematically too like you suggest.👍👍👍 Great reaction guys! And Butch Vig is the bee's knees!!!👌
"Only happens when it rains" and "I think I'm paranoid" are super dope off this album. Probably their biggest hits. Those songs got so much airplay back in the day. "Push It" off of V2.0 is a good listen for a more electronic style of theirs. For what it's worth, Butch Vig the drummer was the producer for Nirvana.
and Smashing Pumpkins first two albums
I think I'm paranoid is on the superlative version 2.0, but otherwise I agree with you. Butch Vig only (only, hah!) produced Nevermind, Nirvana went to Steve Albini for In Utero.
Butch did do L7's Bricks Are Heavy album which is the smoothest the ladies have ever sounded.
Every song on this album is an island on its own. The archipelago created is one you'll want to stay on.
Already knew Ryan and George had excellent taste from many prior reaction vids (both what they choose to praise and what they choose to criticize) but this really locked it up. Bravo guys. Great reaction.
Fun Fact:Butch Vig is a music producer too. He produces the Foo Fighters albums
The opening of the song is a track from the Clash song Train in Vain
Great production from Butch Vig and friends. Saw them open for Smashing Pumpkins US tour and they rocked out. Opened for No Doubt tour in LA and loved it too.
Back when Gwen Stefani was super hot, now she looks like every one of my sisters barbie dolls I took a lighter to when I was a kid
Love them!! One of their later songs I’d love to recommend that I don’t know gets the appreciation it deserves is “Bleed Like Me”.
Loved hearing this song again, loved your reactions.
There album after thus one is my favorite, 2.0
The song Special is awesome
Love this band, glad you guys covered them
One of important alternative bands in 90s.
I was all about this right here when it came out ❤
Y'all should visit The Cardigans. Don't be fooled. This band is the real deal. "Love Fool" was their biggest hit, but their whole body of work is outstanding.
Pretty much can't miss with the first couple of Garbage albums, great records.
Garbage is awesome. Tons of great songs.
VOW by Garbage is FIRE!!!!!!!! A real Rocker!!!! The drummer Butch Vig is the Producer behind Nirvana album Nevermind!
Fave band in my teens in the 90s!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
"As Heaven Is Wide" is probably my fave song off of this album. The entire album is great, though. Cheers!
Agreed!
Man, I am loving the 90' kick here, it's a nice ride.
‘Vow’ or ‘#1 Crush’ (B-side of ‘Vow’ version, not the ‘Romeo + Juliet’ version) are incredible.
Great tune, great band. Glad you guys enjoyed it. You might also check out As Heaven is Wide by Garbage. I don't know where you're going with the rest of this series, but I'll throw a few recommendations out there... in the same vein as Garbage, you might check out Seether by Veruca Salt. Their best song? Idk... maybe, but definitely where you want to start. Maybe Black on Black II by Heart, it's newer in their catalog, but a mighty fine song. For a more modern option, you might look at Faster by Within Temptation. Looking forward to hearing more of your take on women who rock.
