Hooping for Machine Embroidery Tip: The Tape Technique

  • Whether you're a beginner or a more experienced embroiderer, this hooping tip will help to make your machine embroidery life easier! This technique required double-sided tape and will help hold your fabric and stabilizer more securely in your hoop which reduces puckering in your designs.
    Using double-sided tape is a great technique when dealing with sheer, slippery, or stretchy fabrics. The reason is that the stabilizer which touches the outside part of the hoop does its job as stated, its “stability” holds to the plastic part of the outer hoop. The issue of “puckering” within a design often occurs when the material touching the plastic of the inner hoop doesn’t “grip” the material. So, when you have one part holding securely and the other slipping, the result is distortion and puckering within the design.
    Applying double-sided tape to the outside of the inner hoop where the material touches the hoop eliminates the slipping between the stabilizer and fabric and will give you much better results.
    The best part is, the tape will work for multiple hoopings, until it loses its “stickiness”, then you simply remove and reapply a new piece. I’ve also found that it doesn’t harm or leave any residue to most fabric types. Essentially it does almost the same job as the “t-pin” technique but is less invasive to the fabric.

    I have tried this method on the following day of watching this video. It works! I was so impressed that I have bought enough double sided sticky tape to go around the world twice! Thank you again.

    Isopropyl alcohol is what I found to work the best and fastest on double sided tape, 505 spray, and even the (accidentally) wet heavy water soluble stabilizer crud (even the caked on old stuff). I will have to also try the unscented diaper wipes sometime for immediate clean up post dehooping! Thanks for posting this video! You got a new subscriber here!

    Hello John. Good tip. Question: with stretchy fabric i.e. a t-shirt, would you pull the fabric tight or just smooth it out to the edge and then over the tape?

    • @EmbroideryLegacy
      @EmbroideryLegacy  5 років тому +3

      Anne Luehr with t-shirts/knits I’ll just try to smooth and not stretch the fabric. That said, I have had customers bring me tight fitted garments/toques that did need to be stretched to accommodate how it would be worn. The wonderful world of embroidery :)

    This is a wonderful tip, Thank you for sharing. But, I was wondering, does the sticky tape leave a residue of your fabric at all? (I am guessing it depends on which tape you use too?)

    • @EmbroideryLegacy
      @EmbroideryLegacy  3 роки тому +1

      You are correct, the tape you use will dictate the results.

    Really good idea! Does anyone know what to use to remove the temporary adhesive spray from the hoop grid insert without also removing the colored lines?

      @@lorenaromero23 Thank you - I live in Europe, so we don't have half the nifty things you have in the US! I used Turps - it worked.

    what about hoop burns? I rarely hoop my fabric--

    • @EmbroideryLegacy
      @EmbroideryLegacy  5 років тому +3

      kim Benson hoop burn generally happens when you tighten down the screw after its hooped. If you preset your hoops properly your material shouldn’t be marked. Some materials to mark more than others, in production and to this day I have Jiffy steamer. Quick hit of steam and Moro’s are gone.

    I’m having issues w/ gapping in my embroidery designs (both stock images from my machine and designs that I have digitized) any ideas why? I make sure nothing is obstructing the machine, I try not to move the arm when I change needles, thread etc, I make the fabric flat when I hoop it. But always towards the end of the design, the outline at the bottom starts to gap from the design.. sigh

    • @787310
      @787310 3 роки тому

      you could try checking the tension of your fabric. if its correctly tensioned it would sound almost like a drum. if your fabric tension is good then you may not be accounting for push and pull correctly in your digitized file. go back to it and slightly make certain elements larger since certain embroidery designs can "shrink" and make gaps appear
