When You Play DnD With a Therapist
After seeing the Dungeons and Dragons movie, a professional therapist tries playing DnD for the first time, and proceeds to over-analyze how every player plays the game.

As someone who actually plays with a therapist, it’s honestly a lot more of them trying to fully understand the motivation of every single NPC rather than the PCs themselves.
lmao sounds accurate
Exactly
the dm that just created the npc: *sweats nervously*
IIII AM LITERALLY THAT GUY
They didn't meet any NPCs yet.
Oh dear, I'm a licensed psychologist dealing with children. I literally play this game in my free time. I hope my players don't think of me like this. See, I'm an incredibly sarcastic person and have to temper my tongue while at work but at the table, let's just say I don't need magic to cast Vicious Mockery.
Well, I think that as long as you play DnD instead of making it a shiny therapy, I think there's nothing to worry
Ah, I see. So you're a child of divorce or parental strife, using sarcastic humor to both get people to like you and keep them at a safe distance so you won't get hurt. Hiding behind a facade because if people don't see the real you, then can't reject you.
-
Ha, how do YOU like it?
@@solvseus Shit, not bad. But one thing you got wrong. I don't play the game or use sarcasm to hide. I play the game because I like committing horrible war crimes like punting kids and I'm sarcastic not to hide but because I'm just a dick. Take that, Sigmund Freud and your psychoanalysis. How's that? I'm not sarcastic because of trauma, I'm just not a nice person.
Edit: The Punting Kids Tally is over 30,000. I own several orphanages in game to help this.
pttf wit hthe right class and perk combo you can cass VM as a free action, amatur
Lol I hear you. I play with a group of fellow psychologists, and it’s nothing like this. This is cringe AF 😂
This looked like a normal dnd adventure. Only usually the DM is the therapist
thats what iwas expecting
As a therapist that is a forever DM, I can confirm this fact.
Sometimes deliberately. There's actually a form of therapy that uses D&D (or other RPGs) to help with various issues.
The kinagarden adult
Holy shit that is SUCH A TRUE STATEMENT.
My first campaign as a DM was a 10 person team, homebrew, where their backstories were woven into the story lines.
Lemmie tell ya, I got to know so much more about my friends because of what they wanted for their characters. A lot of fictional wish fulfillment and trauma processing lolol
Noah has real depth as an actor thespian.
As a licensed commenter from cough UA-cam. Your eagerness to praise others for their accomplishments shows deep rooted need to allow others to see your own accomplishments. Most likely from the need to get praise from your own parents more specifically your mother. All the while keeping people at a hands distance.
😦I…eh…you…I don’t…how did…I’m that much of an open book huh?
Lusallie: “I have to go with Shapeshifter and I’ll good witch.”
Therapist: “You have an Identity Crisis, wander, people pleaser and and uncreative.”
Lusallie: “Okay, I see you discover power of emotional damage but my high optimism resist it… Plus everyone call for support and I’m here to help.”
Actually played DnD with some Psychology majors in my day; not an entirely positive experience 🙄
You good?
Third player : and you are just an asshole
My reply to the therapist: “Or maybe I just want to have the option from changing into a buff orc lady, an effeminate human man, of whatever I flippin’ want to be?”
In all seriousness though, it would be interesting to play as a changling.🤔
My reply, uh. I'm playing this role cause everyone else picked everything else and if I don't play this role, the party would literally die.
Oh you have a savior complex. 😅 cool. Now if you want me to save your character, pay me my gold and items. Or else you can reroll a brand new one.
For anyone that is interested, there are group counseling sessions using DnD as the medium. So the therapist would be the DM, they run through the session and do some processing after the DnD session. I just happened to be interested in it as an I am a new Therapist.
That's an interesting concept. I mean, it's nice to think that you could go to therapy without it being a COMPLETE waste of time.
Do they do any of this online, or just in person?
Where do you find something like this?
I'm a counselor and have done this with a group of 4-6 teenagers in person. It has its own unique hurdles, to be sure, but can be really beneficial.
@@corygouldman2314 that's really cool! I'm myself looking into how I could potentially incorporate dnd in a therapeutic setting. Did you receive specific training anywhere or did you create a session with a specific theme for these kids?
We once had a group of five IRL psychologists (me, the GM included). They managed to convince the BBG to give up. In terms of analayzing each other through the mechanics... I don't do it most of the time, I guess they did not either.
Yo, can I join your group? My group just makes bad decisions often that ends up with one of our party members being dead and we always have to go back to Deaths realm just to get them back. We do it so much. We have a punchcard now.
@@dokikicingene1517 Having a punchard to the afterworld looks like a fun idea! :D Our group got dissolved as three players got married and they have "other" responsibilities. Kind of sad story..
"Dungeons and Dragons it's a safe imaginary world where you're able to flex your creative imagination free of judgment yeah we're all here to support and uplift each other"
Meanwhile in real games ...
DM: "Now Joe ... don't rush into the dragon's lair and get the whole party killed again"
Joe: "That was 10 years ago! Are you ever going to let me live that down??"
Player's in unison: "NOOOOOOOOO!"
My man Joe saw an opportunity to Leeroy Jenkins and took it
This is the best example of "Bro, it's not that deep." I've ever seen 🤣
Gor LifeRender Tok says thank you for including him in the sketch, and he’s still looking for coin and companionship if anyone’s interested
Davis needs shoulder to cry on.
Glad to see Noah getting work outside of Smosh. So happy for him.
He's done a few Warp Zone videos over the years.
A recipe for disaster...
This therapist needs a therapist 😂
Many therapists do.
Thought it was the norm/mandated for therapists to have one
Indeed a lot of therapists go to other therapists. Also helps to process the stories of their patients😂
Thats like a doctor needs a doctor lol
The best therapists have therapists
Daddy can’t disapprove if he wasn’t around 😂
Haha! I genuinely thought about making a psychiatrist/therapist styled cleric at one point in time. Then I realised how much everyone hated it and how poorly it worked in most D&D games and so quickly dropped the idea.
But well done guys! Great adaptation of this lessor concieved notion!
I think that would be funny, like every time you heal someone in battle you ask them questions about their childhood😂
In critical role, Caduceus Clay is totally a cleric therapist. But like, someone who's actually listening to your issues, who cares and sparsely offers advice when needed. The douchebag shown in this video is a funny character, but would be a terrible therapist.
As long as you separate it from the table and do it to the NPCs, that's fine. Maybe just go over how your character psychoanalyze the PCs as a passing note, rather than in excruciating detail
@@Djorgal "Hm, but how does that make you feel?" - this guy, obviously not paying attention to what you just said about him.
@@solvseus “ We’ll I guess it all goes back to my mother” 😂
Kim at 2:52 dropping "This F%#!ng guy!" was classic. 😆
in texas, there’s an online dnd therapy program. the therapist dms. it seems cool, but definitely shouldn’t replace a full on therapist
Thank you for the first single smartest comment in this thread so far.
@troffle "Thread"?
Davis is the perfect choice for this role. He plays "smug" so fucking well XD
A phycologist(psychologist) as a Dungeon Master would be legit damaging.😅
So today we will be exploring your deepest traumas and rolling dice, now, who wants to get us started?.
Or legit amazing because therapeutic gaming is a really thing. Too bad insurance probably won't cover it
psychologist
@@timothycrowell381 😊Thanks. I'll pass it on to Google spell check.
half of my psychologist friends prefer to be the dm
This actually happened to me, I cried for two days after the free therapy session.
That therapist maybe had poor social skills then. I’m sorry that happened.
I just made a half-orc warrior, who is secretly a forgotten princess. This made me just realize i maybe have issues with my appearence and I dont want to be the center of the attention, but still wish to be valued and lead everyone else... Or all these things are just cool.
I played DnD once, it was hilarious which I don’t think many ppl put into their games for example: a player wanted to laugh at a joke….he rolled a 1 😆
"You can do anything you want"
DM: Nope.
"...not under my watch".
That cough when saying he went to 'Harvard', was a spot-on entitlement thing, lol.
😂😂
How can you tell someone went to Harvard? Don't worry, they'll tell you.
I know right, those of us who went to Yale would never do such plebeian things.
That's the intersection in the Venn diagram between Harvard grads and vegans...
TFS Mr. Perfect Cell: "Oh please, there isn't a shrink qualified enough to deal with their hot mess!"
TFS Alucard: "BUT I AM!"
I think a therapist at the table could make really interesting characters and develop or even a therapist player character could be fun as long as keep those assumptions and psychoanalysis in game 😆
this skit helped me in my mental journey, you see, whenever I imagine a fantasy setting with different classes (ranger - swordsman - magician - gunner etc...) I always imagine myself as a jack-of-all-trades, someone without a class bu picks skills from all classes.
I suppose that means I am lost in my life and don't know who I am or who I should be, wandering aimlessly in life without a plan or a goal in mind.
There was no need to call me out like that.
@@alexanderslowikow9131
I was talking about myself, but glad wer'e similar.
I also imagine I am always a Human, maybe because I am afraid to get out of the comfort zone of my specie, or I'm a racist :P
As someone whose favorite archetype is jack of all trades, so I often play spellblades or bards (analysis paralysis makes me hate losing options)...I feel called out.
Should do a contractor plays D&D who evaluates every dungeon from the perspective of how he would approach building every ridiculously elaborate trap, secret door, or crazy structure.
There are many different types of game groups. "No judgement" sounds great in theory, but can be odd in practice. When characters who are supposed to be good have players who are extremely pragmatic, then being a bit judgmental might not be out of place.
"But... saturation bombing would kill the civilians along with the hostiles."
"Why are you judging me, I thought this was a safe space."
Then again, judging the character's actions is different from judging the player. Some of the nicest people I know play some of the most violent characters. Now, if a bunch of characters in a row have immense collateral damage, after a while, the rest of the table will wonder why that's such a consistent theme.
Yeah I 100% agree mortal questions in game seem to leak in to real life
And it’s up to the table if they want to talk about destruction behavior to the fantasy world in or out of game
Judging a character's actions assumes you know the character that person is playing. A lawful good character may be a Changeling who wants all humans dead, for all you know! I played a game where the GM had allowed us to think the character was a ranger because he knew the guy was a changeling thief, with a Chaotic alignment, he basically didn't give a shit about anyone but Changelings.
I play a Moon Druid and am playing him very bestial, very anti-civilisation. My backstory includes watching local forests being torn down to make a town, killing all the local wildlife, so I am not very human or Civ-friendly. My GM has my backstory and told me recently that I was playing my character against type because he assumed I was going to be a fluffy Druid who makes calming teas for everyone - he clearly hadn't read my backstory at all, even though he was the person who asked for it.
Also played with a Wizard who turned out to be working with the bad guys. Some of his decisions seemed really weird but when we finally worked it out, it totally made sense.
"This fucking guy" just wonderfuly delivered.
As soon as the therapist started talking, I knew this was going to be cringe. Lol
As a therapist, this is interesting. Although, I do find that the first character a person creates is the most telling. after that, it's just super fun! I don't take therapy into playing but as a GM, you can use it to make some interesting conflicts just by knowing what ppl think and feel; I would never abuse my power 😜
Seriously tho, there are therapy groups that utilize ttRPGs as well as LARPs nowadays. AND playing such games develops great skills.
I just really love playing RPGs!
Also, everyone is amazing in this sketch! great job!
My first character was a tiefling warlock whose mother was killed by his demon father, leaving him an orphan who was abused by his fellow foster kids throughout his life, leading to him becoming a force for justice who rejects his demonic heritage in every way.
Which... may perhaps reflect how I cut my dick of a father out of my life when I turned 18, was bullied throughout middle school, and consider empathy to be one of the most important values... a parallel which I never noticed until now...
...damn you and your introspective revelatory accuracy, therapists! 😅
@@IceMetalPunk God I read that as "cut my dick off" and was so goddamn concerned for a second
@@IceMetalPunk and I didn't need to do a thing 😜
my first character was an elf ranger, who was the only female in her family and had to take care of them. She was self-taught with everything. She then left her family to make it on her own. Kinda boring but that's what it was. Much like my own life.
As I said, the first character is very telling. 😁
I ACTUALLY once experienced this in person when designing a character. My friend's girlfriend knew nothing about super heroes and thought a character I made in a comic was somehow a representation of me or my own life. It was the funniest thing I ever heard, but I was still mind blown that someone would try to merge fiction with reality.
Those miniatures are awesome. I want to play in this game.
Sometimes a Barbarian is just a Barbarian.
...too often.
Almost always
"this f*cking guy" I felt that
I love you guys. You’re a pretty big channel but all the videos still feel personal, like you’re talking to us all individually at once
I just went to go see Return of the King (extended edition) last night in theaters, and they showed a few celebs playing DnD... a bit odd I see this the following morning...
Nah. Viva La Dirt League did one too, only they didn't have "sponsored content" written right up front. Wizards of the Coast are continuing their push to get back more people after they lost the serious fans and homebrewers after the OGL disaster and the failure of the Chris Pine movie to go gangbusters after all the marketing.
Reminds me of the psychiatrist in my dads old friend group who would both analyze everyone and make occasional quips, but then was also constantly self medicating, to the point of laying down on the middle of the floor after getting too fucked up from her pill cocktails DURING fancy dinner parties.
I mean I loved the floor show, it's not often you see something quite that funny.
Wait until he meets the guy who's playing as a literal floating piece of toast
Love you guys! Keep the content coming!!
I was relating to the therapist so hard for the introduction (except for being an actual therapist). Then I just couldn't stop laughing. Seriously, though. One of the reasons I love DnD so much is that I get to silently psychoanalyze the players and characters in order to play my own character to the best accuracy. So much brain food! 😅
Yesss I’ve been waiting for another instalment of the dungeons and dragons series
"This fucking guy" killed me
My therapy office actually had a dnd group for patients were the adventures and heros were based on stuff we wanted to work on irl. It was awesome
5:10 you know I was expecting him to say Scoots
I can't get past how that guy is literally named Doctor Phil.
Wish for play D&D with GWOT era US military veteran(s) soon😂. BTW said veteran(s) be fan of Forgotten Ruin series & prefers War Crimes lol.
😂😂
@@mirfalltkeinnameein5922 ya, especially US SF/SOF operator vets😂
I actually put descriptions of all of my past characters into ChatGPT and then had it make guesses about me based on those characters. The results were interesting. Nothing too controversial or surprising though.
This sketch feels like "If Frasier Crane played D&D
I love when Noah shows up.
this video... so much to unpack... but you still only get 1-2 more Harvard references!!
I Needed more of this series
I was waiting for the infamous "roll for the initiative" and let's say, I wasn't disappointed! :P
We need an part 2
honestly 10/10 for this epic video 4:05
At what point did Warp Zone become the new Smosh?😂
Exceptional acting, loved the little ear touch
I havent seen the dnd movie but i love this skit warp zone
This is great! I've played D&D for many years and it inspired my guided meditatio experience that plays like a solo D&D game. It helps you expand your imagination and transform your inner story. We are starting to work with several therapist and schools. It's been making some amazing transformations in peoples lives.💚🙏✨🙌
As someone that's thinking of starting a career as a therapist and have conciously used DnD as a therapy method this video got extra special XD
"this F**king guy..."
yep... figured some stuff was about to go down lol...
I love the D&D videos
Loving the full on Frasier energy of this xD
As soon as I heard that the inspiration came from the movie I laughed “oh you poor soul…”
Oh no… I’m realizing all my characters ultimately have the simple background of “left her basic life to go adventure.” That’s clearly a reflection of my repressed anger at being the only one of my siblings not to leave out small hometown for bigger things! 😳😂😜
i kinda talk like the therapist in my head when thinking about dnd
now i'm curious, how a therapist playing a therapist character would turn out
I've done it and it was fun. My Spiritual Weapon was the DSM-V, using the Knowledge Cleric ability/clairvoyance spells was consulting with colleagues, and when I landed a particularly nasty blow, I asked "How does THAT make you feel?"
Did you 3d print your own terrain pieces? They look cool!
I love you guys you cheer me up
I'm not a therapist but I am aware of the work being done with TRPGs (and am writing a version of my own system specifically for use with such situations) but I am gratified to see that this video is poking fun of the stereotypes in a gentle, appreciative way. We all need some laughs these days. I love The Warp Zone.
This is the greatest series y’all have
Player: "My name is Ajax, and I am a human artificer."
Therapist: "I see. So you have autism."
I love the d&d series on this channel!
Me: I'm going to play a Paladin who can smite undead as well as tank and heal when needed.
Therapist: So you're filling multiple roles, trying to do everything, in order to please everyone, for them to like you.
That therapist is the definition of “reading too much into things”😅
Random. But the therapist would’ve made an excellent young Han Solo
Nothing bad's ever come of someone bringing their brother to a dnd game.
Thank God this guy isn't in my campaign. My character is actually an edgy self insert, id leave every session sobbing
So, therapist here: yes this is how we think all the time but we would never share, especially unwelcomed. Also, after a long day of crisis and all the other jazz that comes with therapy, I have no desire to psychoanalyze anyone or myself lol.
I've had 4 therapists. Not one of them acted like this. What the fuck? My ones just blamed me...
Find a better therapist. The best ones blame everything on your parents. Unless you're a narcissist, then it's DEFINITELY your parents fault.
- hmhh ...continue... 🖊️
you definitely need a better therapist. although it is good to take responsibility only for your actions, not others. and don't be afraid to tell the therapist that it isn't working. if they are a good therapist, they will understand and help you find what you need. IF they are a good therapist...
As a therapist that plays D&D... I just spent my day with a full caseload, I do this for fun and I'm off the clock!!
I love these dnd videos
2:27 Thank you for sharing
he's definitely more of a psychologist than a therapist lol
How to get your friends to see a therapist... part 1😂
Have you guys thought about actually playing d&d? On stream i mean. I think that could be cool!
Why does it seem most appropriate that the therapist would play a bard? I called it at first and was briefly disappointed when he picked ranger. I was slightly more disappointed when he misunderstood rangers as a ranged only class, but that bait and switch was great.
Cool dnd Video, I really appriciate your work!!
Good thing Shawn wasn't invited this time. Phil would've had his work cut out for him
This was great
I like the way y'all write man.
Thx. We've been doing it for a while
