  • "Smoky Mountain Rain" is a song written by Kye Fleming and Dennis Morgan, and recorded by American country music singer Ronnie Milsap. It was released in September 1980 as the first and only single from his Greatest Hits compilation album. The single became one of his best-known songs.
The song is a first-person narrative of a man who has left Los Angeles and returned to Knoxville, Tennessee, due to "a change of dreams." He attempts to call a woman from a phone booth, but learns that she is gone. Attempting to find her, he then gets a ride from a truck driver who is going to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Although he "can't blame her for letting go," he vows to find her "no matter what it takes." Rain is mentioned in the opening verse, in the bridge, and three times in the chorus. Milsap liked the lyrics of Elvis Presley's "Kentucky Rain" so much that "Smoky Mountain Rain" was written for him similarly, albeit with a slightly different flavor: Milsap had played piano on the recording of Presley's "Kentucky Rain" in 1969.
    Lyrics:
    I thumbed my way
    From LA back to Knoxville
I found out those bright lights
    Ain't where I belong
From a phone booth in the rain
    I called to tell her
I've had a change of dreams
    I'm coming home
    But tears filled my eyes
When I found out she was gone
    [Chorus]
    Smoky Mountain rain
    Keeps on falling
I keep on calling her name
    Smoky Mountain rain
    I'll keep on searching
I can't go on hurting this way
She's somewhere in the Smoky Mountain rain
    [Verse 2]
I waved a diesel down outside a cafe
He said that he was going
    As far as Gatlinburg
I climbed up in the cab
All wet and cold and lonely
    I wiped my eyes
    And told him about her
    I've got to find her
Can you make these big wheels burn?
    [Chorus]
    Smoky Mountain rain
    Keeps on falling
I keep on calling her name
    Smoky Mountain rain
    I'll keep on searching
I can't go on hurting this way
She's somewhere in the Smoky Mountain rain
    [Bridge]
I can't blame her for letting go
A woman needs someone warm to hold
I feel the rain running down my face
I'll find her no matter what it takes
    [Instrumental]
    [Chorus]
    Smoky Mountain rain
    Keeps on falling
I keep on calling her name
    Smoky Mountain rain
    I'll keep on searching
I can't go on hurting this way
    Smoky Mountain rain
    Keeps on falling
I keep on calling her name

Are you a professional bassist Justin? You nail every known song I recall! Make it seem so easy 😃. And Sheba! She stayed so calm and spongy on your shoulder 🤗! How does she restrain from biting your earphones and wires? Mine is calm for a moment on me but later he starts biting my eyeglasses or anything that calls his attention!

Thank you! No, I'm not a "professional" in the sense that I'm not in a signed band or anything like that. I've been playing since 1987 and I really try to pay attention to detail in the songs that I choose to cover. As far as Sheba goes...believe me, she has her moments grabbing my cords/wires/glasses, you name it. Sometimes I'll have to do several takes because she's picking at me and what not. She usually settles in eventually...🤣What kind of bird do you have?

@@justinandsheba The little feathered rascal! Hahaha 😂. Parrots are amongst the most closed animals to the humans if dealt with since young and showed love. Mine is a Red Head Mexican Amazon parrot 🦜, I live in an endemic zone to their whereabouts. When I play my electric guitar Paco (his name) likes to sit close and imitate the sounds, specially the harmonics and the whammy bar!

@@Ebullientdrift That's awesome. I've had parrots for over 32 years now and I couldn't imagine life without birds. Sheba is the second blue fronted amazon I have kept. My first one was named Ruffles and he passed away in 2017, after living with me for 25 years. I adopted Sheba in 2018. So cool to talk to someone else who can relate to them like you can, especially how they react to music.

@@justinandsheba Yeah! Birds are so happy species, specially parrots, who can't be but otherwise joyful with them "parroting" around?! Man, sorry about Ruffles, but thank God now Sheba fills that void. Do you have a husband for her? I'd love to bring Paco his bride, but my wife who is at home the most does not share my affection for birds that much! 😁 She barely stands him!

No...no husband lol. She really isn't interested in other birds very much. She used to live with an African grey parrot at her old house, and from what I'm told she didn't really pay any attention to him. Sheba's about 45 years old, so she's set in her ways for sure.
