The positive energy on the magic speed 2s is amazing , even at slow pace/jogging you can feel the forward motion. Its soft on landing and firm when you push away. The wides size felt bettee
I have my Magic Speed 2s up over 130 miles. One of my absolute favorite shoes ever. The firmness of the lower layer and carbon/TPU plate combined with the soft middle is perfect for my particular foot strike. Great for snappy tempo/threshold workouts. I also ran my marathon and half marathon PRs in them. Grip is amazing even in rain. Midsole is also much more forgiving at warmer temperatures.
I just ran both a 5 and 10k pr in these last month. 19.30 and 39. 37. Not for running slow in as they feel unstable from the heel. So if you are running on your toes I feel these are very good. And so they are good for threshold and tempos when you need to step on it. Got them on discount here in Ireland 🇮🇪
I switched to these from the Endorphin speed 2s (kept getting hot spots) and I think they are some of the best tempo shoes I've owned, really comfy and feel nearly as snappy as my Alphafly's
I got a pair of the magic speed 2s in October, and I have over 200 miles in them. Easily my favorite shoe I've ever owned, despite my preference for more cushion. The outsole gripped quite well in the rainstorms I ran in, and is wearing down far slower than any other outsole I've used, since I shred any exposed foam on most of them, and I'm seeing almost no wear. I love the bounce of the midsole, but as you speculated, it really opens up after about 80 miles and feels incredible. I am slightly perplexed that you gave it a 5/10 for the weight because it has a carbon plate, and a 6/10 for price, despite the plate and purpose of the shoe. I personally think $150 is a steal for a plated raceable shoe. I also suspect that the foam would also open up a lot in warmer weather, which may have changed your opinion on the ride if you tested this shoe in the summer.
They open up. Mine took about 20 miles to open up, but it’s a fantastic plated shoe for a heavier guy. I’m easily able to compress that FlyteFoam/FFBlast+ pretty easily and it feels great!
I'm a bit late to this, but just seen some on sale and they've peaked my interest. Do you feel like they compress a lot as a heavier guy or do you find it's firm but compresses just enough? I bought the glideride 3 last year - I'm aware they're very different shoes - but those things seem to have a similar foam combo and they just bottom out on me in the forefoot. Makes me nervous about buying anymore asics shoes.
I have the v1 and really like it- it is firm, but I actually found it really comfortable! One thing I noticed is that the midsole foam is very temperature sensitive, so it notably opens up and gets bouncier in warm temperatures. I exclusively use it for tempo runs and workouts in the summer and love it for that. In the snow/cold the ride feels just like you described the v2 😅
That also applies to the v2. RunRepeat tested it and the midsole got 125% denser after being exposed to freezing temperature. The average result is 26%.
best shoe I've had towards the latter part of the year. Wanted to go from endorphin speed 2 to speed 3, but opted for these instead. IMO felt better in the shop for me - felt faster. Firmer than the Speed 2s, but the roll feels similar.
I can't wait for the review on the Boston 11. If you thought this was super firm, I can't wait to see what you think of the B11. That shoe was so painful to run in.
Someone please clarify for me if I'm reading this wrong but why are there such low scores for the durability (7) and price (6)? Given that there is a carbon/TPU shank in the shoe that's geared for tempo days and racing (according to Asic's website) you would think a prediction of 400+miles and a price of $150 would be a fantastic deal (should warrant a score of 8s). Most tempo and race day shoes these days come with super soft compounds that don't last long so I can't help but to think his bias towards the stiffness and feel of the shoe is affecting his scoring. I know his scores are highly subjective but I thought he was trying to move towards more objective scoring with how each score should be relative to what the shoe is used for. It's frustrating to hear how a shoe like this with most people loving it in the comments is getting such a poor overall review score. He says the scoring system is a work in progress but I mean it's been a number of years now since he's been adjusting it...
Hey, do you mind answering a question!? Are Novablast 3 and Magic Speed 2 the same size for you? Magic Speed 2 seemed to fit a size less better… Thats akward, never happened with other brands…
@@gabrieltolini Hi, I'm a US9 for the Novablast but went US9.5 for the Magic Speed 2. I've also got the Metaspeed Sky and Edges shoes in US9.5. Normally, I'm always a size 9 but some shoes I need to go up half a size, I've never gone down a size.
I had the V1 and now the magic speed 2 as well and have to say I really like them. Super comfortable and supportive upper nice lockdown and tho stiff I like the ride and you can feel them compressing more and more under the forefoot the faster you run... Have to admit the heel feels kinda like a brick underfoot but I haven't really found that to be an issue during my shorter treshold or interval sessions :) And I tested the speed 3's as well and just thought you sunk to the ground in those and really lacked toe spring Yet everyone loves those so it's really personal to find what you enjoy the most
Thanks for your effort on this video. Disagree with some of your points. Love these shoes. Fast...snappy and still very comfortable from tempo to races one of my favourite shoes and just broke 17mins again. ( last time i went this quick was in my 40s ) totally recommend 👌
The original magic speed is a fantastic shoe for gym training if you’re looking for a deal! Can handle the short treadmill runs, the stiffer upper gives good lateral support and a firm low profile base for squats and other things.
QOD. Found a pair of Nike Pegasus Turbo 2 with 10 miles on them for £55 a few months ago. Had always wanted to try them so was pleased to have the opportunity to, and at a great price to boot. 👍
One time at Wash Park in Denver, I found the key FOB for a Toyota Camry. I searched for the car around Wash Park and I found it near South High School, so I returned the key. I easily could have had a new car.
I’m thinking Novablast 3 for recovery/untempo runs…and Magic speed 2 for speed/uptempo/race… Is ir a good pairing? What about puma velocity and puma deviate for the same 2 styles?
QD: My best find in running world is this channel I've learned a lot from this channel (Seth) like from running techniques, running shoes, runners' knot and most especially family values and support. Seth I'm excited on your road and trail matrix running shoe.. When would it be Seth?
Question: if I’m looking for a good interval/ tempo shoe for track workouts (1200 and under distances) then is this stiff shoe good for that or is picking up an old Tweener Adidas SL20.3 (From last February) for a discount better now that the new SLs are out?
These shoes are both hard and soft. I have found that the temperature changes these shoes a lot. Anything above 50 degrees and these are great. Below that, that midsole is hard and I cannot run more than a couple of miles in them. These are definitely a summer shoe. I still like the Endorphin Speeds better. Those are much more versatile shoes and do not get effected from temperature changes.
Get it from a store with a good return policy, try them for yourself and see if it works for you,if not, return them. What doesn't work for Seth doesn't mean it won't work for you
For some reason my wife and I constantly find single shoes. We do a lot of our miles together. As though someone got tired of one of their shoes and tossed it out the car window. It's an ongoing mystery.
Saucony Endorphin speed 2 is my only tempo shoes and i absolutely loved it - I went past 500 miles in them and looking for another pair of tempo shoes, any suggestions? I am leaning towards speed 3 coz i love Saucony shoes but want to try another brand too (Used Ride 14 past 500 miles and felt it was a great daily trainer)
The first magic speed was also criticised for being too stiff initially. My pair opened up after 50KM and continued to bounce for ~600KM. Finally retired it after ~800KM as the midsole lost the bounce but the structure of the shoe is still holding! Upper and outsole 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 unlike the maxroad I got near the same time period which wore through the outside within 500KM 👎🏼👎🏼
Good to hear I'm not the only one who thought it was very stiff, MS 1 I did enjoy more. Onward to the Magic Speed 3, we shall see what ASICS develops in 2023. Run on Brandon.
Thanks, Seth. All the best to you as well. I am confident ASICS can improve it. What they did with the Noosa Tri 14 was amazing - a shoe I’ve turned to for everything from strides to the half marathon on race day.
I received these shoes on Tuesday (05/01/2023). I ran 30 km in them and I am very disappointed. Like Seth said, these shoes are very firm and very stiff. It is very hard to pick up the pace despite the carbon/TPU plate. In my opinion Saucony Endorphin Speed are way more better.
Seth you should check out Antepes shoes. Negative heel to toe drop, Aka heel to toe GAIN. I’m dying to try them out but they’re stupid priced. If it’s a straight up terrible experience I’ll pass, but they DO look like a nice super shoe otherwise.
Why isn't there a standardized durometer score for shoes? this would be very valuable as a bigger runner. This shoe for example might feel too stiff for Seth, but might be great for me because I weight 100 more pounds. I still run a lot, but most reviews are done by someone that weighs less than 160lbs.
Hey Seth, I was thinking about getting the magic speed 2 but I watched the review on the magic speed 1 and you said good things about it and it's on sale! so Im getting the magic speed 1 instead of the 2. Many other shoes are on sale at running warehouse DGR! go check them out.
None bro. I have the MS1 and its light but also stiff and plate not responsive enough. Go for the Saucany speed 3, thats a banger, heck I ran a half on it and could’ve probably gone the full distance.
I have MS 1, is fun to run at faster paces and strides but the tongue and lockdown is rubbish. Plus the heel causes a lot of rubbing no matter what socks you wear.
I wish there was a document on your website that broke down what exactly you look for. Like for example the upper, list what features land you a 6 and what upgrades to that would get you a 7. Are full gusset tongues more points than semi, ect, ect. If there was more data to support the scoring and how exactly the design equals points it would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same thought. $150 for a racer is good, but it's not a racer, then low weight score because it is one?
Definitely should be at least an 8
I agree this shoe is very stiff. With that being said, I find myself using it for speed workouts. It works really well for 800m repeats.
