Summary: Kind of an inbetween shoe for someone who doesn't wanna drop 250 on a true race day shoe but is carbon curious. I did love the Magic Speed 3 and prefer higher stack shoes so this seems like a good shoe for me so I'll probably get it. Love this review! I’m a huge advocate for the Novablasts and use it for pretty much all my daily/long miles. I think it’s too early in my training to buy the Paris so I think this would fit perfect for those marathon effort runs until then!
Asics has made it hard on themselves by creating the ultimate Supertrainer in the Superblast. It really makes this updated version of the Magic Speed with a higher stack redundant. If they want to keep the Magic Speed around, it seems like they need to make it more like the Takumi Sen. A super light weight, stripped down, 5K - 10K racer that is super snappy and fast. Maybe that is Asics' intention with this update, but it doesn't seem like it meets that standard based on your review.
Completely agree. There was a clear opening to me in their lineup to make the Magic Speed the lower to the ground, pseudo-5k/10k racer or training companion to their Metaspeeds and so I was surprised to see it go up in stack and weight. Perhaps they revive the Hyperspeed line to do that, and this still seems like a great shoe for marathoners doing longer runs or workouts, but the Superblast having a rollercoaster response being so popular after an initial negative pushback maybe had ASICS scrambling to suit what they thought we wanted resulting in these.
@@vick666fulwas the 3 a good race day shoe? I liked my previous ASICS racing shoes and want some for the cross country season. Would you recommend for 3 mile - 5k?
@@kalvin. I absolutely get what you're saying in regards to the Takumi Sen and Magic Speed 3's stack height and weight being a selling feature. It was initially a big turn off for me when I first looked at the Magic Speed 4. However, if the Hoka CieloX1 has taught me anything, it's that weight and stack height can absolutely be negated by the right midsole foam (bounce), geometry (rocker), and plate configuration. I do not feel the added weight of the Cielo X1 because those other three components are so tuned that they completely negate the increase in weight, in my experience. The Magic Speed 4 is in that same category. If the idea is that a 5k to 10K racer has to be as light, if not lighter, and the same stack height or lower stack height than previous 5k to 10K racers, then I'm not sure how much innovation is left in the marketplace. I think what this year has taught me with the release of the CieloX1 and Magic Speed 4 is that brands are looking at ways to utilize other tools in shoe design to maintain, if not increase the speed of their shoes. This is certainly just my opinion, but I have experience racing in the Takumi Sen 9 and Magic Speed 3. They are both phenomenal shoes! However, the midsole response and toe off of the Magic Speed 4 is really a unique experience. I haven't raced in them yet but will at the end of August. My initial impression after about 30 training miles is that they are every bit as fast as the lower stacked and lighter 5k to 10K racers. However, they're actually comfortable to wear protect my legs much better than other mid distance racers :-)
I was recently in Tokyo and bought a pair of "S4"s - they're awesome - basically an upgrade on the Magic Speed 4s but alas only available in Japan. Although marketed as a sub-4hr marathon shoe, they're very good for speed work due to the FF Turbo foam, carbon plate and notable large forefoot strike zone. Super light too at only 250g in a US 11.5. Quirky but effective, they fit perfectly into my Novablast > Superblast > Metaspeed Sky Paris rotation.
@@glyndonwakeman7420 I tried both on. I wouldn't say they are THAT different. Both have the FFTurbo for example, but for me I needed a pair of shoes solely for that speed work by offering minimal real estate + lightness + that optimum/enlarged forefoot stability. When I compare the sole profile of the S4s to my MSPs, you can really see the difference. I'm running a marathon in the latter in 4 weeks, and I'll definitely need that more proportioned forefoot + heel profile. I felt that the Magic Speed 4 did neither, idk.
I think this model will be a great option for overpronators like me, because is wider as well at the top and at the midfoot, I can´t use Magic speed Paris Sky/Edge due the narrow they are.
Is this shoe similar to the S4 shoe that they released in Japan only? It ticks all the boxes for me as an excellent long run shoe that can do tempo work. I think Thomas explained the possible use case for the shoe very well. A budget carbon plated race day option for the slower runners amongst us. It's reasonably priced, it's light for the stack height, incorporates their now 2nd tier super foam. A beefier Boston 12. I'll be picking it up for sure.
2024 is a nice year for running shoes!! New Balance is coming out with the SC trainer V3! You know ASICS can keep up with a carbon plate trainer with the new magic speed. Plus, Hoka is releasing the Mach X 2!! It's a stacked year!!!
I'm confused, you gave this a soft green and at the end you say that for most cases you'd pick this shoe over the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4, yet in the review for the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 you gave it a solid green, said it would be hard to beat and loved it.
All the brands (except maybe PUMA) are just cranking out max stack plated shoes now for the hell of it, it’s not even fun anymore lol. They are all so similar- a dual density with a plate and flashy colorway. Just trying to get as many shots at a purchase as possible I guess. RIP shoe boom of the 20s 😔
For a person doing ALL their runs in the Cumulus, would this be a good entry level Carbon/Race/Tempo shoe to start a rotation with? Or should they “graduate” to something like the Novablast fist?
Is that a bit more like the Salomon S/Lab Spectur? It feels like we’re seeing a few more carbon plates but with more cushion for a more “normal” runner
Exactly what I was thinking. I hope they revert back to the MS3 format of a more speed/tempo shoe but with FF Turbo+ for the MS5 in the future. I'll probably still be getting these shoes but the MS3 was so good for what its purpose was.
From your review, it sounds like they've made the Glide Ride again - which is great, because I loved that shoe as a daily trainer, and was gutted when they dropped it! (I moved to the New Balance SC Trainer at that point, and can't wait for the new version).
A good upgrade from a Deviate Nitro 2 or are they way too different? I've used my DN2 for slow paces as well aside from faster workouts.. Would this work and be a good replacement? Can get another DN2 on sales but I would like to try this.
Doesn't have enough of a use case for me, have the Superblast and Metaspeed Sky Paris and would actually choose the original Metaspeed Sky forfast training sessions

I like to save my metaspeeds for race day so I do most of my speedier workouts in magic speed, long runs in Superblast and daily training in either Novablast or Gel-nimbus
Kinda disappointed they gave this the massive stack height & stiff shoe treatment.. not sure we need an other one of these in the shoe market I absolutely loved version 3, it was actually so nice just wish the upper had a slightly better lock down. The magic speed felt better then an endorphin speed 3/4 for me because it felt more like a racing flat then a daily trainer.
I feel more confused after seeing the review as to weather this is a good shoe. That was an all over the place review of ramblings and half thoughts. Not much help!!!

I could not buy new pair of socks for every run. Magic speed felt 10 times better. Midsole of Boston 12 felt like a hard brick. Magic speed first generation has a nice roll and stack height is lower.
