Fix empty Windows 11 Security or Defender App

- In this video, I will try to explain how to fix an issue seen after upgrading to Windows 11, where the Windows Security application only displays “Security at a glance”. Settings - Windows Security will hang and only closing it works. This is caused by the service “Windows Security Service” or SecurityHealthService.exe that is not running and is stopping immediately when trying to start it. I’m not sure of the cause but did find a way to fix it, which I will describe and show in the video.

I decided to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro on my PC 2 days ago. The upgrade went well. No issues. Except for this one where Windows Security wouldn't load, work properly or it had an empty screen. Thank you so so much. Your video was super easy to follow. I followed all of the steps to download and replace the .dll file. I re-run the Windows 11 setup. Now everything is working fine. I upgraded win 11 on a computer that does not support win 11 and after the upgrade Windows security did not work. I did everything as you explained in your video and now Windows security works perfectly.

Thank you for the Videos and the Support in looking into all that! I found - based on your video - on another blog that deleting the appraiserres.dll from the sources folder works as well. Tested this method on two unsupported pcs and this solved the issues on both pcs.
Jens thank you very much. This fixed it for me. I was getting a message that my computer did not meet minimum requirements when I started Microsoft Filight Simulator 2020 ... specifically. Apart from an icon in the Taskbar that my Security needed attention. Which of course was linked to the unresponsive Windows Security app as you described. The flight sim starts up nicely now. No more problems. Very strange that not even Microsoft is giving an option to re-install like this in stead of just giving a registry fix which doesn't have permission.

Hi. Thank you. This is the best method, worked flawlessly. The other methods are just for some cases. I have done it for a HP - i5 intel, 2 cores processor, 6 years old laptop and for an Asus - i7 intel, 4 cores processor, 5 years old laptop, both considered not acceptable by the new windows 11 installation tool for regular update. Both laptops run the Win 11 on SSD hardware installed by me. As usual Windows releases unfinished versions on the market. It is nice to have fixes.

I was facing same issue and resetting windows -11 fixed the issue . I had to loose my data . And then you released this video .

Thank you .Your method of Installing windows 11 over my current installation fixed my problem too which was Windows security not accessible and virus scanner not working. Also I dont have supported hardware but was able to upgrade to Windows 11 22H2 using the appraiser.dll file Many thanks again !

Can you make a video regarding bugs in the Microsoft Store in Windows 11 (installed using your method), such as stuck at acquiring license and download button not appearing?
I tried repairing and resetting but they never end. I even restarted in the middle of the process and messed up the taskbar and various parts of the UI (along with Microsoft Store completely disappearing from the system) which I couldn't resolve without a local reset.

Thanks; just to clarify can we combine your 1st video and this as 1 step to upgrade win 10 or can we just use this to upgrade from win 10 to win 11?
You could indeed, in theory, use the method to replace appraiserres.dll to perform the actual upgrade. I didn't use it myself but many people did with success. It looks like there is a good chance you will still see the issue with Windows Security though. It doesn't seem to be related to which method was used to upgrade.

Thank you for sharing these methods -- a fun project. Per your "Upgrade to W11" video, I successfully upgraded a 15-year-old box with a Core 2 Duo E6600 (2006) CPU, without TPM and Secure Boot (legacy BIOS) and equipped with only a DirectX 11 GPU. Subsequently used the method herein and fixed the Security app issue as well. You stated that the appraiserres.dll from your download link above is "Old version". I assume it was extracted from the W10 ISO/installer. If so, was there any alteration done to the file from your download link above then?
It does come from a Windows 10 ISO without further modification but not the latest one. You would need an older build of Windows 10 to find a working file. In the meanwhile I read that it might work to just delete the file as well but didn't test that yet.
