  • Annie Machon is a former MI5 intelligence officer who together with David Shayler, her colleague and partner at the time, blew the whistle about alleged criminality within the intelligence agencies. As a consequence they went on the run, living in hiding for a year, and following lived exile in Paris. Shayler, believing he had acted in the public interest, finally stood trial in London. Hear Annie tell her side of the story here.

One of the things asked of a potential employee in this business is "you may find yourself the custodian of knowledge which you may find morally and/or ethically wrong. Would you find this acceptable and be happy to work alongside it?"
Sometimes you have to fight dirty to win against the baddies.

      The realist ..
No you fucking don’t. ...the world is not so black and white that the “baddies” are so clearly defined. You have to actually behave well to have any chance of taking the moral high ground. Idiotic attitudes like this have led to so much trouble...

      The realist ...
I cannot speak with certainty of UK law, but US law requires taking an oath to uphold the Constitution, and to reveal lawlessness. One's duty is to the public, not primarily your supervisor, at least in principle.
Is your throwback to the Nuremberg defense, like this, to be left standing? "I was just obeying orders when I arranged to torture and assassinate a democratically elected and popular leader. Therefore, it was a patriotic service. I deserve a medal, hush money, more Viagra, and lots of friends in elite circles."
Terms like "evil doer" were popularized by liars like George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, lifted from the context of children's bedtime stories. O, comrade, protect us from the boogeymen!

And the baddies are always now our western corrupt, corporate controlled governments in Europe and Britain and vassals to Washington. The goodies are Russia! Russia follows international law, respects national sovereignty and Washington recognizes no international law nor national sovereignty because they are the exceptional Americans that can bomb, invade, and destroy innocent countries, commit war crimes for world hegemony. WE are not only the "baddies" but we in the West are evil because we have accepted Washington's change in national defence doctrine to that of a pre-emptive strike policy! In other words, America is controlled by a neocon idealogy that wants world hegemony and the destruction of Russia and China. If Washington sees that Russia can be destroyed by a first strike, then it will STRIKE with nukes!

I've always found it incongruous, her personality and her working as an intelligence agent. She's a delightful person, and I never expected to get that question answered. Many thanks.

Poor Annie Machon. Her career utterly ruined by her faith in the mentally ill David Shayler, she has ever since scraped a miserable living spouting one dreary, uninformed piece of speculation after another to anybody who will listen, leavened with tired old "when I was in MI5" stories. She would have done much more good and been much happier if she'd just retrained as an English teacher or something similar.

Darius I see it more as she escaped a career, in an outfit run by the twisted and nasty, and is now well on her way to building a successful career based on honesty, decency, and acting with ethics! I know which I'd prefer! I'm so sorry for you, your horrible point of view must be like an extra appendage that taints your life.

I think the reason why Annie was recruited by MI-5 to begin with, is because they saw in her, intelligence, courage, fortitude and wisdom.
This is what she portrays to me.
I am not sure about your view.
I wonder what your private agenda is?
