Might have missed it before but something people may appreciate is getting details about the specific potting mix's used for seedlings. 👍

Another great informative video thank you, Paul and thank you, Julian. Julian is so knowledgeable we learn so much listening to him every time. We like his perspective on seedlings, " it's kind of like having a kid, you don't know if it's going to grow up to be a doctor a delinquent." We need to make a trip out tot Lara Farms soon.

The caterpillar is probably giant swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes) butterfly. Very pretty butterfly but it will eat small citrus-family trees like crazy. If it's on a large tree it will hardly do anything. They are very interesting because they can look like a snake and also release a noxious smell. I only learned about it because there were tons of them on my Citrus at one time.

A small correction regarding the white sapote - the "McDill" variety of white sapote was actually selected in Orange County, California. "Denzler" is the one that is widely grown in Hawaii due to tolerating humidity better than other varieties. I have actually not been able to find a literary source that discloses the origin of "Denzler", so it may have been selected in Hawaii, but my suspicions are that it was still selected from a seedling in California.
Most of the named cultivars of white sapote actually originated in southern California and were selected from seedlings grown by enthusiasts and home orchardists due to the fruit being too soft to transport, making commercially unviable. "Chestnut", "Cuccio", "Fiesta", "Lemon Gold", "McDill", "Pike", "Reinecke", "Suebelle", "Vernon", "Wilson" (was not selected by Excalibur's Richard Wilson), "Mac's Golden" are all Californian selections.
Source: California Rare Fruit Growers. I also live in Northern CA and grow white sapote.

Update on the origin of Denzler: I found a really obscure internet source on an old blog post that says the "Denzler" variety IS actually from Hawaii! It was apparently selected by a German fellow named Sebastian Denzler, who was a beekeeper near Kona on the Big Island, and that was where he apparently selected his "Denzler" variety from a chance seedling!
That would explain the variety being common there, as well as some anecdotal observations on the internet that "Denzler" performs well when grown in more humid subtropical/tropical conditions. So Denzler would be the "Hawaiian" white sapote! And even though the "McDill" variety is from California, it is apparently popular in Australia, and is also one of the more popular varieties in Hawaii.

I picked up a Lisa atemoya (1 gallon) from Julian recently with flowers and hand pollinated it with a red sugar apple (that I also picked up there last year) I have a Lisa fruit growing now. Maybe I should have let the Lisa grow more before allowing fruit, but it's kinda cool having fruit on such a small tree.

Thanks, interesting . You should go back and talk about and look at the structures, soil, and water set up. Ex.- what’s under the black weed barrier? How are they watering the plants- by hand wand inside and sprinklers outside? Does he make his own compost? I can’t grow any of these trees, but am interesting in something to apply to my property. Like your channel, but i am to far north for any tropical trees- this is cherry and apple country, zone 6.

Will the black sapote graft last a long time? I’ve heard about different fruit trees that are close in relation having their grafts fail after a few years
