The Face? - Poor Christmas? (Unknown song from 1987 - first time original recording in full length)

- One of my most searched songs, which I have been looking for, among other things, via my homepage www.dedinidevil.de for many years. The band could be called The Face/ The Faith or The Race. The title "Poor Christmas" or "Your Christmas". On the homepage I had provided only an excerpt. Here you can hear the song in full length for the first time.
I recorded it in October 1987 in Germany - either on Radio ffn (Lower Saxony) or HR 3 (Hesse). The direct songs before and after on my cassette were the following:
1. Stepping Razor - Latin Tears (Uncle Sam Is Coming) (must have been ffn, because the song got a lot of airplay there)
2. the Loft - Why Does The Rain?
3. The Sound - Iron Years (must have been ffn as well, because it was also played a lot)
4. The Cure - Just Like Heaven
5. Momus - Flame Into Being
6. The Leather Nun - I Can Smell Your Thoughts (Remix)
7. Cetu Javu - Help Me Now
8. Boytronic - I Will Survive
9. Mr. Mister - Something Real (Inside Me/ Inside You)
10. Ryūichi Sakamoto & Iggy Pop - Risky
11. Bryan Ferry - The Right Stuff
12. David Sylvian (from the LP "Secrets From The Beehive", released as a single only in 1988)
13. Kate Bush With David Gilmour - Running Up That Hill (Live The Amnesty International Concert)
Also at the same time I recorded another unknown song: Base Bazaar or Bates Bazaar with "Trip To Rio." Here I have also re-digitized the original recording ( • Base Bazaar - Trip To ... ).
Maybe this information will help to identify the two titles.
how on earth are there no leads at all for this glorious piece of music

There is a song registered on BMI called Poor Christmas Tree, could it be related to the song we are looking for?
Sorry for my bad English, I'm using Google translate.
I don't think the original title has the word "Christmas" on it, but if "Poor Christmas" is actually it's name, it could perfectly be a charity record. The Face (or Faith) could have been a religious band that wished to raise awareness about poverty on Christmas Eve. "They need your eyes of love" and "they need your hands, your healing hand only to survive" sound kinda persuasive if you think about it.
I absolutely agree with you. It does does sound like a charity record.
This is what I had in mind. A local christian band that tried to raise awareness of poverty on Christmas Eve. I wonder if the band ever made another song with a similar topic.
I totally second the idea of this being a regional Christian charity record. I googled "Eyes of love" just for fun and that is a known idiom for deep compassion. Auntie Google adds pictures of Jesus to that:) The whole thing makes me remember my own youth with regional radio stations, bands which received only regional publicity and (maybe a viable lead) mainstream radio stations in Germany lending their frequencies to small religious stations for very few hours a week. These small stations often presented bands that would otherwise not get too much air play and were more or less connected to a social cause.
Reminds me of “Do They Know It’s Christmas Time At All”.
On 1:39 the vocalist say "That's *your* christmas faith" the song name could be "Your Christmas" because when you spell "Poor" without the "P" it sounds like "Our" or "Your"
that intro is absolutely beautiful
The more I listen to this song, the more beautiful it sounds.
Putting this in my Christmas Playlist next year because this a masterpiece.

At the Official German Musikarchiv there is no published Song exist with the Title Poor Christmas. The Song must have a different Title! I also serached for "Christmas" or C`mon C´mon" (1986-1988 )and listened to some samples nothing´s matched. So i would rule out the Titles Poor Christmas, Christmas, C`mon.

This is an interesting track... It sounds a lot like it's a replay of a live recording, maybe even a karaoke session. There are two vocalists, they occasionally trail off sentences (especially near the end) as if they've forgotten them, a couple of words are mispronounced by accident (like they did no retake since it was live) and the volume/clarity of the main singer seems to vary quite a lot between lines, as if he's singing into a microphone at varying distances. The first time the chorus is sung it sounds like there's a slight echo to the words, the same kind of thing you get at concerts or on stage.
My lyrics interpretation after using demucs to isolate the vocals:
Hear the world, boy, whisper
By wishes we don't grow
And see this little sister
Just trembling in the snow
They need your hands, your healing and
Only to survive
They're sat by lights in endless nights
It's you to let their lives
Come on, come on, come on
They need your rise of love
Come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on
They need your rise of love
Come on, come on, come on
No, there's no illusion
Just fighting for a say
They're living in confusion
Each small against one way
I mean to help by preaching hope
It's working in the rain
Forgotten faith is endless pain
But that's just Christmas Day
Come on, come on, come on
They need your rise of love
Come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on
They need your rise of love
Come on, come on, come on
Mmm, see their glooming eyes
The day food feels so nice
Please go home
And love will reach your own
See, there will be nights
The day food feels so nice
Please go home
And love will reach your own
Come on, come on, come on
They need your rise of love
Come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on
They need your rise of love
Come on, come on, come on
I like this theory a lot. It definitely sounds like a live recording and if you look at the lyrics all together (I hear them slightly differently than the interpretation offered here but still), it really starts to paint a picture: A religious organization does a telethon to raise money for children in poverty during the holiday season. A band is found or assembled to provide some musical entertainment for the program. The Faith sounds like a perfect 'on the nose but still coolish sounding' band name for this religious program ("Forgotten faith is endless pain"). The musical backing track is either studio recorded or played live, with the 2 singers definitely singing live (listen to how rough the singing is starting around 1:40, for example). The lyrics are an appeal for people to donate: "Come on, come on, they need your eyes of love." The song could very well also be bluntly titled Poor Christmas since it's just a throwaway for the program anyway.
If the story went something along these lines, then it could very well be that the song was played once live on the radio and never again. I personally doubt this one is solveable unless someone who was involved in the production somehow finds out about the mystery and/or radio playlist logs start getting dug through à la TMS (assuming they even still exist in the first place).
@@jeffcoons I wonder. Could this whole Christmas charity thing have been featured in the newspapers of the city? Maybe that could’ve had the people responsible for this track mentioned as well as its name.

Here's my try to decode the lyrics. So the title could be "Your Christmas" and maybe there's a pun on Christmas Carol. It's possible that the singer use three different words that sound very similar ("Come on", "Come home", "Carol"). Let me know what you think.
Keep your aim clear this time
Like wishes we don't blame

do you know which station on which day? most stations have an archive
i strongly believe that both songs (trip to rio & poor christmas) are from radio ffn along with most songs on the tape as 3 of the artists were included on radio ffn compilations in the early 90s
Stepping Razor - Latin Tears (Uncle Sam Is Coming) - FFN powestation 1 (1990)
The Sound - Hands of love - FFN Powerstation 2 (1990) (Diffrent song but from the same album as the iron years)
David Sylvian- Orpheus - FFN Nightline (1992)

Lyrics (my interpretation):
Hear the poor boy whisper
He wishes without pain/with a way
And see his little sister
She's trembling in the street
Beneath your hands, your healing and own need to survive
They set flood lights in empty nights it's you, to help their lives
Come on, come one, come on
I need your eyes of love
Come on, come on, come on
Now there's no illusion
Just fighting for a sin
They're living in confusion
Mother/Tomorrow gets one win
I need to hope for rich and hope
It's like you knew the way
Forgotten pain/faith this/is endless pain
It's just your Christmas Day/Mistranslate
Come on, come on, come on
I Need your eyes of love
Come on, come on, come on
I hear 'forgotten pain, this endless rain' which would make sense and actually.. instead of christmas I hear something like 'that's just business'
it's also possible he's saying 'need your rays of love'
i'm not saying this is the case, just that it's someone with a heavy accent and different readings of the lyrics might find the original.

Nice!
Iam obsessed with this mystery.
I'm convinced this is some Christian song. I hear lines like "they need your hands, your healing hands" and "please Go-ahah-od." There is an American family show theme song quality to it. The guitar player is almost certainly American or just a fan of the California rock sound of the '80s.
Merry Christmas guys!
this is such a lovely song
The Vaze - Your Christmas (1987)?
If the band's name it's not The Face, The Faith, The Race, The Rays, could be just The Vaze, The Vase, The Waze or The Wase
I think this would help to identify.
The fact this music played in Clube FM 103.5 could be a lostwave fan asking to play the song.

Hey Rène. This may be a weird question but are you able to send a picture of the paper you wrote this songs possible title on? Some members from the discord are curious to what you wrote down exactly. If you're not able to send a picture it's okay and I appreciate that you're still trying to find this song with the community searching for it.
I haven't had my original labels for years, as I had already written small labelling programmes for myself on the computer in the early 1990s. Sorry.
René, to keep you up to date, and remember to take this with a grain of salt as it is mainly speculation on our part; based on the radio schedules, Pop-Fit was supposedly cancelled on the last day of December 1986. The spectrograph of PC did not contain the 10khz line, which is otherwise present on the spectrum of the majority of NDR recordings, though this could be regional. Based on the Hamburg newspaper radio schedules, we've also found out that Powerstation seemingly started on October 24th, 1988 (unless it changed stations), leaving only Grenzwellen on FFN.
Do you happen to remember if Ecki Stieg played similar music on Grenzwellen, or was it mainly just obscure and uncommon electronic music?
Again, take this with a grain of salt as it may or may not be accurate. Hopefully, this information does jog up your memory a bit.
I would say that your investigation should fit Pop-Fit.
But I wouldn't be so sure about Radio ffn. I've definitely been listening to the station since at least mid-1987, because the great "This House is a House of Trouble" by Sally Timms & The Drifting Cowgirls Feat. Marc Almond was playing on continuous loop. I can't imagine that ffn started out without Powerstation and then only launched it a year later. So Radio ffn is definitely possible.
Likewise HR 3, since I had regularly heard "Der Ball ist rund" with Klaus Walter (the German John Peel) every week on this station. I owe my favorite band The Go-Betweens to this DJ, who always had them on the program. The rest of HR 3 I have rather not heard.
Likewise not (anymore) NDR 1 and NDR 2.
My overall assessment of ffn or HR 3: I probably recorded the song back in October of 1987. At that time, they didn't actually play Christmas songs yet. This non-conformity would fit Klaus Walter, though.
@@MellieTerry Thanks for the clarification! I genuinely don't think we're far off from solving this one, or at least I'm hoping it won't take another year. If we're even lucky to find a copy of the song for sale, we'll notify you right away; we want you to be the one to have it.

Got a new set of audio kit, though I'd try transcribing this song.
For the lyrics, I kept it as "Rise of love" because I personally hear the R closer to the -ize than the "you-," but after transcribing my version of the lyrics, it sounds like a plea to a higher power to find a missing person.
So in that sense, they could be pleading to God to find the missing, and then it could easily be God's Eyes, or Eyes of Love.

Hi René.
Klaus Walter was contacted and he unfortunately doesn't remember having played either Poor Christmas or Trip To Rio.
His exact words were (in German):
"hallo, leider kann ich da nicht weiterhelfen. die beiden songs kenne ich nicht und ich kann mir auch gar nicht vorstellen, dass ich die mal in meiner sendung gespielt habe - strange. tut mir leid, best, Klaus"
It could still be possibly him, but his wording sounded like he wouldn't have had played such songs on his show.
Do you remember what kind of songs Klaus played and if Poor Christmas or Trip To Rio would actually fit his show genre-wise?

One thing that jumps to mind is that Powerstation and Grenzwellen wasn't listed.
Powerstation should be on weekdays at 6pm, but instead it's a show called Jugend, Popnews On-Stage.
Grenzwellen should be on Sundays at 9pm, but instead it's a show called Liebesgrüsse.
We're still trying to get copies of the October 1987 newspapers from Göttingen, so we can see if the radio schedule differs in any way.
Do any of those other radio programs I listed seem familiar to you at all?
Regarding Klaus Walter ("Der Ball ist rund"): I would have said that he could have played the songs on his show, since, like John Peel, he had an open ear for all kinds of musical genres. Of course, the focus was on alternative music, which at that time was still called independent, but not only. Who he had on his program, for example: The Go-Betweens (who became my favorite band through him), Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Triffids or Phillip Boa & The Voodooclub. However, if he himself says that he can't imagine having played these titles, of course we should believe him.
To Radio ffn: None of the given broadcasts actually says anything to me. If it was indeed the program from October 1987, then this definitely applied to my hometown Göttingen, since there were no regional "windows". According to Wikipedia, the "Grenzwellen" were already running in 1987, but may of course have been from November or December 1987. The presenter Ecki Stieg, however, is said to have been there from the beginning as music editor. So "Powerstation" music could already have been played in 1987, even if under a different title. In this respect, Ecki Stieg and other ffn editors might be a possibility. According to the first "Powerstation" sampler (CD/LP), these were Uli Kniep, Gerd Kespohl, Lutz Hanker and Frank Eichner. Maybe someone of them can help?
Two songs I searched for years. One is solved, the other is still unknown. Both here on UA-cam for the first time in better audio and in full length or at least a little bit longer. Join the premiere.

What did you hear what the dj said in german? Also did the dj say the artist english or german?
Can be "Love on Christmas"
I just thought of something...he says carol carol....like Christmas carol. Hehe.
hm i hear *candle* there lol
Hey, do you think the song was called , Steal her away(this Christmas) by face 2 face?
sorry if you've been asked this already
I don't think so because I already recorded this track in November 1987. Face 2 Face vinyl was from 1988. As a Christmas single it was probably published at the end of this year. - I wasn't asked this already but I came across it myself while searching the internet.
Has anyone tried contacting the Filipino station wxb102? I found the station randomly and heard many obscure new wave songs that I had never heard before.
this song was played in Germany and is most likely a local obscure band. highly unlikely it made it to the Philippines.
Background beginning music like Take my breath away
Könnten Sie mir eine FLAC-Datei des Songs schicken? Ich möchte es unbedingt in höchster Qualität hören. Danke schön.
Looking for They Need To Be Free by The Last Four (Face Records, Germany, 1987) to rule it out, but hopefully not!
I messaged both sellers on discogs. I will let you know if they respond and what they say.
@@blackhawksnbullsncubsnbear4615 It's not the song sadly :( The search continues!
@@theoriginalbluey Oh, did someone contact you?
Unfortunately, at 2:44 the bitter truth firmly reveals that it is a demo song.
The same is with the C.I.A. song and also with the Monster Of Love song
Se unió hace 17 años XD(soy el hijo de la de la imagen)
How so?
a bit irrelevent of a question but, when will you update the links on your site? they lead to dead urls
Thanks for your info. I will see that I update them soon.
@@MellieTerry also 3 of the songs that didn't have UA-cam uploads have been uploaded now ^_^
I wonder why the full version wasnt posted years earlier?
Yeah, me too?
I meant to type WASNT***
Sometimes people plan on uploading things but temporarily misplace them, or other things in life take priority.
This is the most mysterious song on the internet!
2nd or 3rd most
love this song, still haven't found anything concrete but still looking.
can anyone tell if this is using any real instruments besides the electric guitar tracks?
Maybe is just "christmas"
Face of Grace - why/Hear Me (1986) ??
ruled out
@MamaDollyStitchsQueenany news?
Said this in r/lostwave. Maybe they can investigate better. :)
NO WAY!!!!!
It played last night at Clube FM 103.5!
I'm not joking man
But, sadly, the name of the artist and the music wasn't pronounced.
in Brazil?
@@iamabearofficial7904 yes
@@iamabearofficial7904 could be just a lostwave lover asking to play the song
@Jay Kay Yes, I can
@Jay Kay I have some good friends working for the radio.
do you think the title could be different from your Christmas or poor christmas? could it be something like come on?
I don't think so. I've noticed it in 1987 so I assume that the radio presenter called it "Poor Christmas" / "Pure Christmas" / "True Christmas" or something like that.
What about the band name? what do you think it most likely was? Also one more question. since you recorded it in germany is it possible the title or artist was spelled in german? thanks
I noticed "The Face" but it also could be "The Faith" / "The Race" and maybe "True Faith". I'm sure that title and artist were spelled in English. Radio ffn and HR 3 had presenters who could speak fluent English.
@@MellieTerry Thank you bro Ill see if I can find a band with the name true faith
@@MellieTerry There Is a band called The Face that plays obscure themes. One of them calls "Bodies". The vocalist sound similar like the song "The most mystirious song of Internet". If You're thinking in this band, the voice is so different than "Poor Christmas".
If someone knows more information of this song please tell me
