you forgot to mention that the Great Tree Trunks actually respawn fireflies. As in, fireflies have a 70% chance to respawn every day if there are less than 10 already existing fireflies around. This is exclusive to the great trunks though.
I was so glad Klei actually made figs and above-average trees relocatable! I think it's a balanced cost for moving it and it makes brilliant decor! They really had it all fig-ured out
Boats were always bearable, some people just were never prepared to become sailors. The trick was to make boats your base, and stockpile some extra water balloons/repair kits for any emergencies. Besides all the new things, Klei also secretly made fire spreading slower, so we can't freeze lock Toad any more, and burning Bee Queen is more complicated now.
I like the update quite a bit! It’s not a grand update, but what it adds are new mechanics that seem fun to use and a few new utilities to try out. The giant trees for fireflies alone is already very nice. Getting 10 fireflies per tree is nice, and as my biomes usually have 3 trees each, that can be a potential 90 fireflies if you go and sail to all 3 biomes! That’s miles better then using the oasis desert, which grants 3 fireflies per year unless you want to spam telelocators/get super lucky with a rain midsummer. The canopy’s themselves seem really nice for boat bases. Boats being wooden was the biggest detriment to using them during summer, as you could lose the *entire* base due to a small mistake. The canopy helps fix that, and I’m excited to see how people use boat bases with that in mind. The improvements to boats is very welcome, and 64 bit is a nice change as well : )
As someone who only gets onto Don't Starve once in a while, but have loved it since the beginning, these reviews are very helpful! Subbed and upvoted, please keep them coming!
If klei didn't update the fig spawn on tree, I'd have never bothered with relocation except on 500+ worlds. I'm glad they saw reason from people's feedbacks. Thank you both beta test players and klei.
Honestly? Probably my favorite update sense RoT started; save for maybe RWYS. The content added is actually pretty gfood compared to other ocean updates, it added some major improvements to boat usability, And added 64 bit compatability. My only complaint are the fig dishes, as you pointed out.
I was initially a bit fan of this update during my testing. After playing with it on my survival world; however, I don't think its all that great. It takes FOREVER to grow the above average trees, and they don't provide nearly as much value as I originally thought. The fig recipes are good. Its always nice to have more cheap healing and sanity options. But setting up farms outvalues the new trees by a huge margin. Why rely on figotoni when I could grow an enormous amount of dragonfruit for dragonpies? And I can always use stinger and salsa for sanity. The wildfire protection seems like it would be good for protecting kelp or lureplants that are on the ocean near your base. But sadly it's not useful at all if you are basing in the Oasis, because the sandstorms only protect things when the player is in the sandstorm. So you even though your ocean stuff would have wildfire protection, you risk your base catching on fire if you go onto the ocean during the day. The lightning protection is nice though! I wish they had made lightningrods have guaranteed lightning protection, but at least the trees do. All that said, it is still nice to have more biomes in the ocean.
My gaming time is spent on a number of games, and when an update for DST drops, I really appreciate you going over it and giving us your opinions. That way, I know what I have to look forward to when I inevitably come back.
I'd really love to see big ships added to SW, like the boats in DST, that you could build structures on like crock pots and lampposts, or ooooooh a slanty shanty! Unfortunately, I fear both Klei and Jazzy are putting single player in their rearview...
Honestly sw and ham were fairly unpolished and unfinished, I wish they would just port them to dst and continue to update them. Sadly sw would be hell with rot boats and would require a big rework. Also mods could revert any changes made to a ported shipwrecked
I absolutely adore Boats and sailing around, especially after this update. Because they are much faster now, it will be easier to find important things like the Lunar Island, Pearl's island and Crab King even if you don't like Boating.
I managed to make a mini base(with everything you need) on 1 boat. Features: 2 masts=decent speed Anchor because you don t want this ship to sink A pump for summer protection Crock pot Science machine 1 catapult with generator included 2 chests 2 ice boxes 1 fish container The whell to actually control it And you can add a fire pit/ a furnace for heat in the winter or another catapult for extra power Finnaly it also includes that claw that you can use to get chests
so I ran an experiment recently, started a new world, and rushed ocean content while setting up a coastal base, the idea being that I would protect the majority of my base with the Above-Average Trees. I was able to protect a rudimentary base for the first years summer under a single fling-o-matic, but by the time Spring of year 2 had rolled around I was fully protected under Fig trees. I am now beginning autumn year 5 and have since torn down the one lightning rod and one fling-o-matic I had built to protect things year 1 and I have had no issues. I did have one of the above average trees catch fire once from a lightning strike but I have fire pumps next to the trees for good measure. So bottom line, my opinion is if you want to use them for base protection it is absolutely doable early, I probably could have had them pop up mid spring had I found one of the waterlogged biomes in year 1, sadly I only found the first one in autumn year 2 on my way to Pearl's, but since you need to visit Pearl to get the Winch recipe anyway, it worked out in the end. I'm going to try it a few more times, to see how viable it is, but from my initial tests so far, it seems to be quite good. Also fun note, I have also found that placing my boats like a lureplant farm boat in a position where you can hop to it and also grab figs overhanging the water is a great way to get a 2 for 1 out of a single boat, and if you leave the figs on the vine till your Lureplants grow in their leafy meat, you can harvest all your figs and your leafy meat together. The regrowth timers of both will be pretty much syncronized at that point.
Always good to hear from you Jazzy! Honestly, I really liked this update, the only problem is the dishes but it's not really something impactful, so i'm all for it!
