A few years ago I saw a story on UA-cam about a guy who had his engine stolen in this manner. He was eventually able to get a police report and took the sheriff to the guys house and was able to get his engine back.

I watched his video. A 30 year seller here. As soon as he asked to return it. I would have accepted it with no questions asked. Better to take the return than have a upset buyer. Once you accept the return. It's on him to return in time and in the same condition it was sent to him in. Take the return. Relist the item. And live to fight another day.

@peterdangelo5882 You don't know that for sure. But if you approve the return, eBay will cover you with the seller protection policy. That's why you always accept the return!

Agreed: "As soon as I receive the cards back in the exact condition as when I sent them, I'll get your refund right out to you." If I'm not mistaken, taken that path, the seller might have a way to issue a partial refund if something is amiss with the return, BUT - that might all depend on the return policy of the store.

I love watching every episode and I am glad you are getting the clutter out of the aisles. Have you considered cleaning under your packing tables? It looked like there is a bunch of debris under them. Your inventory shelves even have wheels and you could pull them out once a year and clean behind them. You may find a missing item that fell off the back of a shelf. I just happened to notice the stuff under the tables, etc from a quick scene that was down by the ground.

I never list anything that I can't afford to lose that amount of money, $1000 seems to be the max I feel comfortable with and even that depends on what it is. If I had an iPhone I would be selling local for cash just too many scammers in electronics but I have sold multiple vintage collectibles for around $1000. They are just different sets of buyers. If this had happened to me though, I would be filing charges.

I did sell some things in the thousand dollar price range, but it was back 10-20 years ago and the buyers were honorable. I don't even sell on eBay any more. Anything that big I'd do through a local auction house. They take a bigger percentage, but thievery is someone else's problem.

      That’s really not true.
There’s a lot wrong with this whole story.
I’ve had similar things happen as a seller, but eBay has always had my back.
The seller in this situation should have taken great care to communicate with the buyer, especially given the dollar amount. Before sending cards at all. The seller reserves the right to cancel an order if they suspect something fishy. And if the seller did ask all the right questions they would’ve noticed that either the buyer was not responding or answered the questions weird or that he flat out. Wanted to cancel before they were shipped.
It’s a rotten situation altogether if the seller is indeed not getting that money back, but there just has to be more to the story than that .
This is all just really good talk and education on the importance of asking a lot of questions and not pulling the trigger until you have your answers whether you’re a seller or a buyer .

I've had at least three chargebacks, each over $1000. Ebay's had my back each time. The "secret"? Signature Confirmation. Ship to the address provided. Not sure if this other seller followed policy to the T---but this is covered by Seller Protection if you do it properly. That being said, I'd be uncomfortable selling anything for anywhere near $7700 on Ebay! It's a lot less stressful selling mostly sub-$20 items these days.

I recently had an item that was reported delivered back to me from fedex. I was at my office at the time and no packaged got delivered. Ebay told me that I was protected but since the tracking showed delivered I would have to go to fedex to get paperwork showing it was delivered elsewhere. So realistically ebay reps can tell you one thing but realistically we aren't protected as sellers. On another order I had to fill out an affidavit to be protected as a seller. Its disgusting and it's a huge part of why i can't wait to be off of ebay. Praying by end of this year.

I saw the video too. Very scary and odd. Ebay is getting bad these days for private buyers too. They hold your money until the end of month unless you withdraw it yourself. Now there are no fees but they will add a percentage on top for buyers. And in February they won't pay unless the item is delivered. So a usual postage stamp won't suffice anymore.

What such internet thieves don't realize is, that act is a federal crime as it involves State to State transfer of goods, cybercrime, money exchange theft and whole slew of other things. The police and authorities will visit that person, after a police report is filed by the victim. If that seller hasn't done already, file a claim with the IC3 - cybercrime federal team, Postmaster, Police. Ebay should have made that Seller whole; shame on them. This happened to me over a year ago when a buyer opened a return for headphones (2 weeks after the 30 day window) claiming they didnt work. I declined the return and then they opened a chargeback with their bank. Ebay stole my money to give to them when im supposed to be 100% protected in that case. Buyer wasnt forced to return the item. At the time, i was going through a lot of stuff so didnt have the time to fight with ebay. Thankfully it was $30.
What sucks is that as a seller, youre forced to go through ebay for everything. It's not like you have a way of contacting the financial institution with evidence or anything.
Ebay doesn't even follow their own policies and are pretty much useless unless you get the right customer service agent.
And in a case like this, the police will not help. You can't even sue because you dont have the buyer's legal information (likely fake address and name).

Also, if you’re selling something that’s so valuable and a special collection you should be going through the authentication process through eBay before it gets to the buyer. That’s just my thought. I’m not 100% sure if that was possible but I would damn sure make sure that I communicate to eBay and any potential buyers and cover all possibilities before I put those things in the mail.

Was that the RIFA cap that went bad on the Apple? The little yellow square one? You don't need it much, it's just to absorb power surges, but if you're running through a surge protector it'll be fine. If the computer won't come back on now, it may have shorted something when it popped. If it's not that capacitor, then yeah it definitely needs to be replaced. If you want to play around with it, you can get a little disk drive emulator now, you just plug it in and load up disks from a MicroSD card. Even has a little screen to pick your disks. It's cool.

not for anything but if that happened to me, I'm going taking a trip to the shipping address provided and seeing what's going on. I hate to say it but there's some bad people out there, luckily they don't have TOTAL control. I'd bring the police out there with me and if they couldn't do anything for me then I'd sue him to high hell. THEN I'm taking eBay to court as well for letting a person like that scam their seller out of so much money, when WE as sellers pay them to protect us

eBay does a terrible job contesting against chargebacks. Sellers should be allowed to contest chargebacks against buyers banks themselves. Or there should be a class action lawsuit to force eBay to make chargeback process transaparent to buyers.

Haven't watched Lonnie's opinion yet, but here's my reaction:
    Bad seller.
    1. Didn't address the buyer's problem in his first message. Most customer service problems can be headed off at this stage before they become problems.
    2. Refused a presumably genuine change-of-mind return. Regardless the eBay reps' advice, treating customers decently stops good buyers from turning into bad buyers.
    3. Got upset and called the buyer a liar. Even though he was lying at that stage, saying so does nothing to resolve the situation in the seller's favour, but further entrenches the buyer.
    4. Wasted his time arguing with the buyer and with eBay CS instead of putting in an official challenge to the chargeback. The professional way to deal with it is to go over the heads of buyer and CS monkeys and talk to the financial institution, acting like a lawyer, showing clear evidence of where the buyer broke the law and the Ts&Cs, without any emotional nonsense.

It never should have happened because with all that feedback you know it's not the scammer's first rodeo. His account's gone now (I went to block it, immediately), but I for one will never accept offers from people who are so proud of being evil they show you who they are in their account handles. My policy is only to do business with honest, respectable people. That guy's handle is proof enough to me that he's Trouble. I received an offer one time from someone in China who called himself Erwin Rommel. Nope, besides the fact that I only sell stateside, lol.

The mistake the seller made was declining return request. If the customer requests a return and opens a return request, 99% I will agree, even though I might know in some circumstances it's not my fault. Its good business and it leaves a paper trail for Ebay to step in later on if needed.

We still don't know if it had signature required.
It's required for seller protection but that doesn't mean the seller added it. It's not automatic. Sellers still have to add it when buying the label.
