- Demo footage of the TIV2 from the show on Discovery Channel Storm Chasers in action from the fall of 2013.
B-Roll footage of the TIV2 showing how the crew deploys the vehicle for a tornado intercept.
TIV2 was created to be an armored camera platform for an IMAX camera to film inside of a tornado for the IMAX movie Tornado Alley and was also one of the starts of the show Storm Chasers on the Discovery Channel.
Footage no longer available for licensing.

one main issue i see with this is that the hydraulic spikes are attached to armor plating which seems to deflect with pressure. i would say if you decide to build a third version, i would recommend having the anchor system attached to the frame of the truck. this way you'll have more weight to drive the spikes deeper in to the earth and have less deflection on the armor/wind breaks. you could even just add a second set to the chassis of the vehicle along with the first set.
There wouldn't be any additional weight by mounting them to the chassis vs the armor plate since the armor plate and chassis are part of the same vehicle.
Those spike aren’t doing anything, it would be better to have some sort of hydraulic drill that burrows into the earth

Definitely can be an army vehicle if the turrent thing on it had a gun I mean this will be a great vehicle for that
That would suck if during the tornado excitement he accidentally hits a button that rolls down the windows
Good thing that the windows can't be rolled down then.
I should note that this thing is, in addition to a tornado tank, also a Dutch oven. Besides not being able to roll the windows, it doesn't have air-conditioning either. The only way you're getting any kind of breeze in there is if you open the doors or the hatches. That or if you brought a portable AC.
One of the doors did open during an interception. I guess the lock outside broke. A tree branch went inside.

I bet the registration says “TIV”
Everybody talking about how it won't work like there isn't a video of the TIV2 inside a tornado, working exactly as intended
Yes, it has survived an EF4 tornado.
I'm seeing a lot of critics so i'm going to clear some things up.
First thing, these people are much smarter than you, so don't act like they don't know what they are doing.
Second this vehicle literally went inside a tornado, it is by far the best Tornado vehicle and the only one to be inside a substantial tornado.
Third, no the deploy time isn't an issue, it's much shorter than in the video and the people who operate the vehicles know tornadoes, they know how they act and move and aren't going to be caught off guard to the point where they can't deploy.
Four those spikes may seem like they won't do much but a few points. They were changed to be barbed and also they are stabilizing spikes, they are less worried about flying into the sky then drifting across the ground, they already have the skirts and weight so they don't go flying, but skidding around like it's on ice is a problem.
Five, i'm going to say it again, they know more than you and this vehicle has literally been inside a tornado

Would it not be safer to have like a screw pile on the hydraulics on the side for more hold and stability? Screw it into ground for more hold?
Sure would be but you dont need it. The weight of the car and the shape mitigate alot of the power of the wind. I would be more concerened about houses and other trucks slamming into me at 100-150 mph.
The problem with the spikes is they won't go in more then few inches in hard dirt maybe little more in soft dirt. What they need is hydraulic ramming effect if you ever used a electric jackhammer with a spike bit it will spike into concrete. They have them on skid steer's used for demoing concrete lot easier then using jack hammers these are hydraulic powered. You can see just lifts the vehicle up the more they drive the spike in the ground like a bottle jack. They don't want it to lift make a gap under it. Auger might be better in soft dirt if your on concrete or roadway spikes need to hammer in. Now local government might have a problem with you doing that but rather be alive then pay for damages to a road.
@@Mike-01234 The front spikes go in around 70 inches, and the back ones 40ish.
Also, theres the problem of weight. You cant just put bigass spikes (which wouldn't work as well) on it and expect it to work. When the vehicle was formerly 16,000 pounds (Now reduced to around 14,300) they constantly had issues of axle snaps. Augers also loosen soil, which would be deadly in a situation like this. The few centimeters of gaps inbetween the flaps and the ground would not make much of a difference, and also the rear spikes are at an angle (meaning itll stay in much longer and will be harder to pull out). The reason why it'd be harder to pull out is that as the tornadic winds pull up, it can't move the spikes as they'd have to be pulled out at an angle as well.
@@gameznthingz Do you work on the TIV2 ever had any direct experience with it? I'm just going on what I see in the demo video the spikes start to lift the vehicle. I would have to see it for myself to know more. I do know much easier to drive something in the ground with a hammer then pushing with static pressure. Axles can be damaged have to step those up to heavier duty ones.
I'd love to just go about my daily life with the TIV2 for a car. The reactions you'd get when you take up 2 parking spots at the grocery store, or when you force people to pull off to the side of the road when you drive through your neighborhood's narrow roads, or when you start it up at 6:30 a.m. to get to your 7:00 job every weekday morning, as well as the entire process of going through a drive-thru when it already has a long line, would make each day just a little brighter.

Issues with tiv2: Flaps begin to kinda float when spikes are digged to the ground. I know everyone noticed but that's kinda dangerous.

That's not a Tornado intercept vehicle... that's the new Batmobile
I don't feel like the spikes are doing very much. And if they did would the piston/cylynder connection be enough to hold. I imagined the spikes were something more akin to the hydrolic tree extraction shovels.
The two spikes in the back do quite a bit, they go different directions, helping hold the vehicle in the ground, the 2 side spikes also kind of shoot different directions at a slight angle so yes, the spikes do a lot. They also help keep the vehicle from sliding, now spikes like on the Titus from the movie "Into The Storm" wouldn't do anything, they just go straight in the ground at no angle, all they would do is keep the vehicle from sliding.
@@justinthelightguy1936 I was mostly wondering about how they're connected to the vehicle. I may be imagining that the forces acting on the spike mechanisms are much greater but perhaps the weight, tires, and wind covering all the way to the ground is doing the most work. And, thus, like you say it's just to do that bit more to just keep it from sliding off of an embankment, which could be catastrophic I'd imagine.
the doms are just cars with shells over them this is the best by far!
I think they stopped storm chasing in 2013 I see now Brandon Ivey has a tour business doens't look like he is driving the TIV2 anymore.
kell490 you are wrong TIV2 was in my home town 2 days ago 6/22/2015 Rochelle Illinois
scott351wins Nice to see it still in use I'm sure it's not cheap to operate.
Why didn't Sean build also shields sliding down and covering the rear wheels ? Was it a technical issue ? Wind can rush through there, and the suction cup effect on the ground isn't complete, contrary to Dominators 1/2/3
There use to be a flap on the rear side but after 2011 it was removed and replaced with 2 more spikes
the exhaust comes out from the right flap, which is why they cant block it off, you can see that the left flap is slightly shorter than the right flap, thats because the exhaust
Yeah pre 2012 tiv 2 had its original rear flap it was built with from its original all steel 16,500 lbs design from 2008 it covered the back keeping air from getting under the vehicle from that point but it was replaced with the rear spikes tbh the rear flap design might be better for wind resistance
It was just too much weight. The axels had issues.
Awesome vehicle. The only thing I'd probably do differently is the anchor bars. I'd make them a bit larger diameter and have them go further into the ground using a hydraulic or pneumatic hammer or similar type of action. You can't be to safe when dealing with tornados.
Yeah, my thought was to maybe have them a little closer to the ground once the panels are all lowered. You wanna dig in as FAR as possible.
If I saw that thing coming down the street, I'd get worried.
For sure! We're in tornado alley anyway. That thing comes tooling through my neck of the woods, I'm going directly to the basement, do not pass Go, do not collect $200.
Smooth spikes don't appear to do much at ~6in deep, mostly prevent it from sliding. If wind gets under it's still going up. How about corkscrews directly under the frame like a dog tether?
I was thinking the same thing. Like a big auger mounted inside the vehicle, that deploys through a metal trap door in the floor. I guess the driveshaft and transfer case could get in the way.
They can go up to 3 feet I think, but more importantly it stops it from going left to right
@@GiggityGiggity_27 they can go to 42 in. or 3.5 ft deep

Amazing truck :)
This vehicle has obviously been successfully used in a strong tornado, but there are lots of factors that make this hard to do. First, tornadoes move erratically and it's hard to anticipate where one will be, and thus be able to get in the right location. Second, there has to be an unpaved road in the path where TIV2 can get in place. Third, there has to be enough time to get all this hardware in position.
Not sure if you're still on UA-cam, but in case you are allow me to throw this out. You're right about everything except for the second part. Unlike TIV 1, TIV 2 was built for off-roading.
I am a little surprised by its low visibility color. Wouldn't there be numerous reasons associated with safety and rescue which would favor a more easily seen color choice?
HappyQuails I think they chose a less reflective color for white balance; The green or red reflections from Safety Yellow or OSHA orange would be hell if it caught the camera's framing.
Clearly 1 of these is better than 2 of Hank's "T.I.T.s"

On a serious note, does the TIV use run flat tires , in case of damage caused by debris ?
That Turret and the doors worry me. They seem kind of fragile...
Not sure if you're still on UA-cam or not, but if you are, don't worry: TIV 1 and TIV 2 are anything but fragile. They've intercepted plenty of tornadoes, and the only thing that's ever been actually damaged were the weather instruments they used to have to assist in scientific research, as those things are definitely fragile. But as for the whole vehicle, turret, doors and all, as long as they don't end up in a tornado that's too strong, or end up in one when they need serious repairs, they're all good. :)

I would imagine the hydraulic cylinder and spike would need to be replaced after intercepting a tornado. I used to work at a place that fixed all Kinds of hydraulics and diesel trucks so I kinda have a little experience with knowing what it can take to bend them or break them
Same hydraulics have been in service for the last 10 years+, nothing wrong has happened YET.
The hydro cylinders aren't meant for side load you need to make something that the cylinders push on so they don't bend

I noticed that as well. Not only that, but it leaves the rear tires vulnerable to flying debris.
stoneeh google tiv2 in tornado there’s a video out there with them in a tornado
Those tires are really thick. and it doesn't have to be a perfect seal with the ground. You can clearly see that it isn't anywhere around it. The idea isn't to be a sealed undercarriage area. It is just to stop the wind from getting in, and forcing it through small holes and slits forces it to slow down rendering it powerless to lift the 15,000 lb vehicle.
It is diesel powered
So why did it cost $81,000 to build the TIV 2 but it cost over $750,000 to build Dominator 3? The TIV 2 has far more extensive modifications to the base dodge 3500 than the Dominator does on it's base Tahoe. What gives?
Because they built it handmade, it costed $81,000 for the parts and tools
@@Alt3zza even if the base Tahoe that the Dominator is built on cost $50k when new, which is a really high price, where did the rest of the 700k go to? I just don't see how it's possible to spend that much to build the Dominator when the armor alone only cost less than 80k. Doesn't make sense. @@VTXHobbies The TIV 1 cost 81 grand to build, it’s not know how much the TIV 2 cost to build. Probably upwards of 200 grand due to armour alone.

These pioneers may not realize it but I think they are paving the way for early vehicle designs for land travel on Mars. I don't know how strong the dust storms are there but this could be something that NASA, US Space Force and Space-X may want to take a look at.
The atmosphere on mars is so thin that apparently the storms there dont have any real strength to them. Radiation and the low gravity are bigger challenges for a colony there.
