  • Sounded like a loping idle. No codes, no smoke. Replaced FCA and rail sensor, didn't fix it. Took it to a diesel shop was diagnosed with flat lobes on the cam. Cylinder 1 wasn't working and number 4 was going bad. Was told it needed a rebuild. Wanted to post the video for others having same symptoms to maybe consider.

Had this happen after changing injectors and setting valve lash. Could be either or or both

My exhaust sounded exactly the same. Here is a short video ua-cam.com/users/shortsldQiENZTu08 Edit: My truck is an early 2004 (same as 2003)
I drove the truck out to the highway, It was pinging, sounded terrible and then all the noises and loping idle stopped happening. Truck sounds "ok" now although I *think* I still hear a bit of the lope....
Replaced the pressure relief valve, replaced the injectors, (had hanging idle after injector replacement) replaced the APPS, replaced the FCA had the truck in to get checked at a diesel shop. After it was checked, I would have a "pop" and stumble out the exhaust when cold. Disconnecting the intake heater grid stopped the issue. Replacing the fuel pressure sensor fixed that issue.

Wow. Not something you usually see on these engines. How chewed up was the cam, and did you replace anything else?

    Sounds like a bad injector.
