You are right...I went to New York during Christmas time last year, mostly because of „Home alone 2“ and I felt like a little kid! 🙂 It was a dream come true and I miss New York ever since.
If you are into movie classics, definitely check out "The French Connection" (1971) which includes one of the most iconic car chases in movie history, and of course Woody Allen's "Annie Hall" (1977) and "Manhattan" (1979). I also really loved "Once upon a time in America (1989) by Sergio Leone (also starring Robert de Niro, and including a classic shot that shows the famous Manhattan Bridge "Instagram view" ), "Rosemary's Baby" (1968), which was partly shot at the Dakota building, "Mean Streets" (1973), another Scorsese classic, and "Gangs of New York" (2002). And yes... I am a movie buff. ;)
Yes, "A Bronx Tale" is one of my all-time favorite movies about New York! Another childhood favorite set in New York during the late 19th century is "An American Tail". 😉

Great list John. Some of these are on my list plus; Gangs of New York, Do The Right Thing, The French Connection, Dog Day Afternoon, Saturday Night Fever, Wall Street and so many more.
My favorite NYC movie is definitely Home alone 2, when we visited NYC for the first time it was Christmas and yes we visited all the movie filming spots. It is because in Latvia for the last 20 years and more it is tradition to watch all home alone movies on every advent. And people truly love it,that why TV is streaming this movie, and I believe they won’t stop. :D
My faves are Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada, Home Alone 2, Maid in Manhattan, Head Over Heels, Confessions of a Shopaholic and all chick flicks that were shot in NYC 😊🎬📽🗽🎀🧸🛍👢💄💍☮
Great picks!! As someone who wonders around downtown manhattan, finding movie locations is one of my favorite things to do!! Some others filmed and located in NYC are some low budget 80’s horror films Basket Case (1982) CHUD (1984) Zombie (1979) as well as Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) and many older Adam Sandler movies take place in the Greenwich village! Be well Jon!
About 5 years ago, a friend asked me if I had ever seen "the Warriors" which I had not. I rented it online and and it has become and it has become one of my all time favorites.
Home alone 2 & big were probably the first movies I watched that I can remember starting my love of New York and wanting to visit as a kid. Finally got there in 2017 for my 30th (and it was as amazing as I expected) hopefully back in March next year if flights etc are all ok then!
This is a great list but of course just scrapes the surface. NY actually existed before 1970: “The Out of Towners” 1968 (as dire and hilariously dark a take on the city as any other) “The Naked City” 1948 - awesomely filmed all on location in the 1940s with some unforgettable b&w cinematography. Ever wonder what the Roxy Theatre looked like inside? “Speedy” 1927 - filmed live on the streets of Manhattan in the 1920s this hilarious Harold Lloyd film captures NYC in one of its most iconic eras.
Quite a list! 50+ years here, I got my own list of course. Your choices are great! Major kudos for including _KIDS_ . I would add three movies, _Do the Right Thing_ , _The Taking of Pelham 123_ and _Dog Day Afternoon_ . Carol Kane's Brooklyn accent is heavenly.
I love how you qualify the Warriors as a movie most people probably haven't heard of. Its a classic! The John Wick series utilizes NYC like no other series. Particularly Chapter 3 utilizing Grand Central.
One of favourite films of all time is The Wanderers,Love The Warriors, depressing seeing Home Alone 2 clips when we’re having to cancel our holiday to NYC in December cause of Covid, but no Elf in the top 10?
I suggest "Gloria", by Cassavetes with Gena Rowlands. NYC in the eighties, real locations, Bronx, East side, etc! A must see!!!!! Love your channel!!!! Keep it that way!!!!!
Thank you so much for this selections. I love it and I love NYC. Looking forward to seeing how are things in NYC during the quarantine and once they open. Keep up the excellent content.
A film that I watched before a trip to New York last year was - Do the right thing. We were staying in an Airbnb in that area of Brooklyn and were interested in some of the history of that area. My favourite film with scenes in the city is Sleepless in Seattle though. 😊🗽
The Warriors opening scene with the hundreds of gang members was in the Bronx, in the park near Allerton Ballfields across from the Botanical Gardens. Great video and choices!
You did an awesome job with this list! Mean Streets, Midnight Cowboy, French Connection, Death Wish, Do the Right Thing, Juice, New Jack City are all a bunch that could be in part 2
It’s not totally a NYC centric movie, but Marriage Story! It does a good job to contrast NYC to LA . Plus I saw Adam Driver on Broadway last May and it reminds me of the city!
My favorite NY movies are The Pride of the Yankees, The Godfather Parts I and II and Saturday Night Fever. I do like your list and will watch some of the ones I haven't seen. Thanks for sharing.
My favorite movie is west side story and I was actually working in the college theater when it came out. I worked in the movie theater for 8 years in brooklyn which was my first job and I loved it . I even drew a picture of it as I am drawing a book and I hope I get to finish it.
Not a movie, but one of the great tours by bus is the 'Sex and the City' tours. The most impressive thing about the HBO series is that every location scene was in the authentic location. They mentioned that one of the locations in the first season caused a story line to be dropped because the owner of the location did something (I think raise the usage fee to an unreasonable amount). So, for anyone who loved the TV series as I did. Go back and watch to see the real locations.
Some of my favorites off the top of my head. 1. The Godfather 2. Goodfellas 3. Paid in Full 4. A Bronx Tale 5. New Jack City 6. Crooklyn 7. Ghostbusters 8. Home Alone 2 9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1990 10. Malcolm X
Huge fan of your channel Jon! You have to add the film We Own The Night. It's a great NYPD vs drug smugglers story set in the 1980s with a great ensemble cast featuring Mark Wahlberg, Juaquin Phoenix, Robert Duval, and Eva Mendes. You should check it out if you haven't already!
Great list, Jon! Top ten barely scratches the surface of great movies. I'm a big fan of National Treasure. Not exclusive to NY but the scenes set there are all fun.
I will add these for you to check out, also. Mean Streets(1973), A Dog Day Afternoon(1975), Panic in Needle Park(1971), Arthur(1981), Working Girl(1988), Saturday Night Fever(1977), Juice(1992) and Queens Logic(1991). I love NYC films of the 70s/80s. You definitely got some great movies on that list!!
I have seen The Warriors (still have the VHS of it), Day After Tomorrow, Home Alone 2, Taxi Driver, Ghostbusters, Escape From New York, Spiderman, Goodfellas etc... One of my favorite NYC movies would have to be Escape From New York. I have a friend that has done a couple short "Snake Plissken" videos, He looks just like him! How about Fort Apache the Bronx? You have done another awesome video, Keep up the good work!! Hair the movie, wasn't a good portion of that filmed in Central Park? Bathesda Fountain and the Mall are one my favorite places in NYC and the park!
Pretty much good, nice selection movie list, sad that Hitch stayed out of the list, once it's one of my favorite! Thank you guys. - Valeu Adriana e Jon, matei um pouco da saudade de NYC.
Sidewalks of New York with Brittany Murphy is a my favorite NY movie. The movie will make you feel like you are actually walking around New York. Also an All Star cast.
I feel exactly the same way about "Goodfellas." If it's on, I'm going to watch it. IMO, it's one of the best movies ever made, and to me, it never gets old!!
I was 16 when The Warriors came out. I remember visiting my cousins in southern jersey and they thought that’s exactly what the city was like. Earned me much unwarranted Street cred, possibly because I kept insisting it wasn’t that bad.
So many great films were shot in NYC. I like your list. Mine would include the original Death Wish, Die Hard 3, The French Connection, Wolfen, the original Shaft and the 2000 remake/sequel, Men in Black, John Wick series, I Am Legend and The Bourne Ultimatum.
Check out Scorcese's "After Hours" with Griffin Dunne for some primo downtown NYC locations. It's completely weird and offbeat, and as funny as hell. For what it's worth, this was the movie Scorcese agreed to direct because he was waiting for clearance to film the controversial film "The Last Temptation of Christ".
“WARRIORS....Come out and..PL-AYYY-YAY!!”...One of the Greatest lines EVER (and it was an Ad-lib)...Also, the inspiration for a poor-selling, but Awesome video game!.
Hi Jon, great list of movies! I had expected the obvious stuff like Breakfast at Tiffany‘s or lots of Woody Allan, but now I‘ll have new films to watch, in case corona restrictions continue. I really love your videos!
My English teacher was from Brooklyn and she put up A Bronx Tale when we finished our Americanism unit. Everyone was going batshit crazy over it and I feel like we all bonded over it.
The Warriors is one of my all time top ten movies. I was planning to come to NYC this month but sadly that wasn`t possible, but because of this movie Coney Island is on my NYC must see list.
Hi Jon and Adriana. On more than a few occasions, my neighborhood, around Atwater and Ste Catherine's Street, all the way running East, our neighborhood has been turned into NYC. With Cop cars, taxis, the old phone booths, and they even have NYC subway staircases that go down into the subway there ( here ) with the green handrails and the NY subway signs you see down there. And not far from my apartment building on the side streets right near here, they use the old buildings because of their outer staircases. Summers are usually rife with filming and I have personally had my fair share of star sightings in person. We've been host to a bevy of high octane actors and musicians over the years.
For me one of the top has to be Coming to America. In fact in 92 when first came was living in Elmhurst few blocks from where Macdowells was. And my aunt was living from 80s so heard about the taping there. Others Westside story (new version was tapped not long in the city), Once upon a time in America (famous Manhattan bridge shot from the street shot), and Ninja turtles - still hear jokes about rats in Subway being splinter and sometimes shredder :) Neir 👍 Even Anthony Bourdain did episode once with cop from Jamaica Queens buying the place to save it.
"You've Got Mail"....."Eyes Wide Shut"....."The Incident" (1967). The Incident is very rarely shown on tv anymore because it is so politically incorrect but wow what a movie. Martin Sheen's big-screen debut. Hard hitting drama about two sadistic psychos terrorizing the passengers on a NYC subway train late at night. It is a movie you will never forget. The acting and directing is top-notch and the tension created is off the charts. ua-cam.com/video/hYbSYX74Ujk/v-deo.html
Thanks Jon for making this possible. This is one of video topics I've been looking forward to. And for that, I will ensure to visit each filming location possible in my second visit to New York. (Taxi Driver is easily one of my favorite movies of all time.) As for me, my other picks of the quintessential NY movies are: Manhattan Elf Cloverfield West Side Story Do the Right Thing The Devil Wears Prada Frances Ha Brooklyn Leon the Professional And Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Just an amazing city to explore on film and TV.
yeah, most larger budget movies that "take place in NYC" or "Anycity USA" are really shot in Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver. The tax credits, skilled labour pool, and exchange rate just make it cheaper to shoot in. Which is great for my friends who work on those sets! If you want NYC movies that are shot there, look at indie movies like Frances Ha, or really anything by Noah Boambach or that crowd of filmmakers. Of course, big filmmakers from NYC often demand they be shot in the city like Jon Favreau, Martin Scorcese, and more

"When Harry Met Sally"....real NYC feel to the movie...one of my all time favorites!

The Basketball Diaries was a good one too for the gritty side of NYC

Hard to believe now, but some theatres refused to show this movie in 1979 for fear it would set off riots.
Extremely loud and incredibly close❗
Greetings from Germany and thanx for your inspiration👍
Can’t go wrong with the French Connection.
My favorite New York City. Movies are The King of Newyork and Mean Streets.
Yeah, I could see Montreal standing in for NYC with the right set work.
A Bronx Tale is one of my favorites.
TV show mention: Mr Robot and The Duece
1. Gangs of New York
2. Something Wild
3. The Night Before
4. Cloverfield
5. Nerve
6. King of New York
I Am Legend at Washington Square Park!
Good one !
You forgot Elf. Another iconic Christmas movie in Nyc :-)
I loved the Ghostbuster cartoons too
For me one of the top has to be Coming to America.
Another Great NYC movie was Woody Allen's Manhattan.
The French Connection
The Seven-Ups
Moonstruck
Big
Do the Right Thing
Thanks Jon for making this possible. This is one of video topics I've been looking forward to. And for that, I will ensure to visit each filming location possible in my second visit to New York. (Taxi Driver is easily one of my favorite movies of all time.)
As for me, my other picks of the quintessential NY movies are:
Manhattan
Elf
Cloverfield
West Side Story
Do the Right Thing
The Devil Wears Prada
Frances Ha
Brooklyn
Leon the Professional
And Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Just an amazing city to explore on film and TV.
yeah, most larger budget movies that "take place in NYC" or "Anycity USA" are really shot in Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver.
Of course, big filmmakers from NYC often demand they be shot in the city like Jon Favreau, Martin Scorcese, and more
Frances Ha - that was the movie I was trying to think what it was called - really liked it.
Now youse can’t leave!!
I remember you saying it and i thought, it's time to sync it.
Well, al least you didn't recommend woody allen. Try Gloria, Saturday Night Fever, King Kong etc. Thanks for the vid
