Mads I just want to say thanks for the years of great videos. I have been here long enough to remember when you started the demo work on the deck, so I can appreciate the amount of work you have put in to Athena. Now that you and Ava have started on your journey of life and your travels together, I feel like you two are a critical part of my Sunday afternoon. Just wanted to say thanks, and wish you both all the best.
Mads, I would suggest adding a clear plexiglass viewing window to the top of the cover so you can quickly see if you have a drive issue while at sail. Should be easy to router in.
I started watching your videos 9 years ago. Congratulations on the 100K subs. I stopped following you because I got tired of watching you sand, sand, sand oh glorious sanding. LOL .... I just started watching you again because you finally got it on the water and it looks BEAUTIFUL !!!! I have to say you do some amazing work and this channel is the best resource on youtube for sail boat repair. Keep up the great work and enjoy the water.
Can you put the outboard in the space available in the cockpit locker? When you're in less urban places and are moving from anchorage to anchorage you will need easier access to the outboard. Doubly so if you're going to put your dinghy up on deck for anything other than short sails. You could even hook up a charge point in there, tucked up under the side in case of splashes
She is a precious one. Wouldn't let any ol' crane operator in exotic places lift her up for maintenance. The attention to detail is sushi chef level. Respect. Hope you will have plenty more exploration of places around the little blue dot with this magnificent ship.
Ever considered using the space up towards the aft in the locker? You could fit a row of jam-jars with the lids adhered/screwed up into the top and the jars "hanging" by the lids.. Very efficient and a great water tight storage for small stuff..
As I can see there is some space under and over the driveunit cover which some little stuff can get through and reach the driveunit or the tillerarm. What I would strongly recommend is to eliminate this space, 'cause any little piece of stuff you can never imagine like bolt, nut, knot on a line end or whatever can stuck in this cover and cause the "pain in the behind". Some weeks ago my main sheet traveler was broken in such a way - nobody could imagine, that a winch handle can stuck under it.
I've found that the market is flooded with counterfeit sd cards and usb drives. Every has also cut their warranties. I would suggest, know your vendor. And if you use Sandisk they have a utility to check counterfeits. It is also a good idea to do a low level REFORMAT on these devices, since that can detect and lock out bits that about to fail. With your heavy use of media, I'd do that quarterly.
There's a small tool named H2testw that will test SD cards, external SSDs, etc. by just filling them up with random data, then reading the data to verify the drive retained the data correctly (it's using a pRNG with a seed to get a repeatable sequence of random data).
@@realulli Yep for Windows. There's a soft called F3 that performs the same for people running Linux / Mac OS. Counterfait drives pretend to have a storage capacity while they just have a fraction of it. When something looks like a real bargain, it often means there's a crookery behind !
I too thought of a French cleat when Mads mentioned his thoughts of mounting the cover . I think the cover should be able to be removed without the need of tools.
Project idea: mylar or other similar plastic or cloth porthole shades. Cut thrm to the shape of thr portal, then use magnets to secure them either to the bolt heads if they are magnetic enough, or to other magnets epoxied in place.
I use a 16mm line for my jib sheets, too. One thing that was suggested to me was to just use one continuous line for the jib sheet. Simply find the middle and loop it through the clew and back through itself. This way, you don’t have those giant bowline knots getting caught up on your forward shrouds whenever you’re maneuvering.
Great work Mads. Don't worry about loosing a little footage. We know you wouldn't try to skip getting something done especially when it involves your electrical system and Ava's convenience. Hope she and her sister are doing well. Have a great week ahead.
That was very inspiring work, and the final results look excellent. Thanks for sharing enough detail of the required steps. This was a real eye opener vs. a plywood enclosure. Cheers.
Mads, we look forward to your videos. I am now a stickie note guy. Actually has increased my productivity and counters my natural procrastination tendencies l. Thanks for that and for the hours of entertainment you provide us.
Thanks for yet Another Brilliantly interesting vidclip ..... When you do the install of the New Autopilot, ...... I ( and many others ) would love to see just how you 'Callibrate' the Unit sothat it does run into the 'Stops' and overload it.... I am sure that it will be callibrated to STOP a few 'degrees' Before it reaches the Physical Stops ..... ????? There is obviously a 'Feedback' to know the actual position and any one time ..... Best to You and pass on my wishes to Ava too .... Cheers from New Zealand
I was wondering if you considered putting a piece of that 12mm wood on the inside from the locker? I was wondering what kind of torque the drive unit puts on the rudder arm and if it will cause warping (or more damage) on the bulkhead it's mounted to with washers. I don't know what kind of force that ram puts out and I'm used to dealing with high pressure hydraulic systems. So my "normal" support would be different.
@@WaterFaucet24 I should have assumed that some serious thought went into it. I mean I watched him put fairing compound on a cover. People who are that detail oriented generally don't forget to consider about the wall being strong enough to support the force on the mounting point.
@@Gus.1979 yeah, I am just going from memory. One other thing to note. If you look at 13:37 , notice the bolts nuts above the left side of the new cover? Those are holding a large victron inverter and an even larger and heavier victron isolation transformer (a beast) on the other side. Which makes me think even more that he did some serious structural strength work on that bulkhead.
Really enjoy you publications, they are presented very well. Im not sure if your a millionaire, but wow you spend some money on your boat. al the best . Well done .
As you have a Whitlock wheel, pedestal and steering did you not consider the Whitlock / Lewmar motor that bolts directly under the pedestal, much more reliable than tiller type auto pilots
Mads: I know it's on your list but don't forget to paint the inside of that spiffy cockpit locker door panel next time you have a little leftover paint.
I wish you would do an overall cost eval for the whole project. I would love to know exactly what you spent on the boat and the man hours you spent on the project. I am betting that you could have bought a new boat for what you spent in time and money you spent on this boat.
Great episode as always:) . Some years ago you somewhat teased a possible episode for the NMEA 2000 network. Some kind of nerdy in depth episode. Is this out of the way or still a possibility?
The curvature in the headliner panel over the back station post has been bothering my engineer eye. When are you going to get to finishing the headliners / trimming that one so it is flatter? :->
I shot an hour and a quarter airplane flight yesterday and my GoPro 9 randomly shut itself off after 15 minutes. Why? Not sure. SDCards are mfg spec cards camera has latest update software. I am annoyed at the loss of footage too. I understand. As always, you have interesting DIY video. Thank you.
In listing the items that could be stored in the cockpit locker perhaps you forgot one item .... a baby, or do you have somewhere else in mind for that?
Love the day in the life videos, but especially chuckled at ...should take " an hour".... When I was working full time I heard that often and yes it should take an hour but then there was interruptions, miss-measurement, etc.
So did you think we believed the peel ply mistake was actually a mistake? Admit it you are addicted to sanding! Wait or is it you know we are and just did that for us? Either way thanks we needed some!
Rats! How to change out a c/b is the ONE thing I wanted to see done! 😉 Was it a particular brand of SD card that failed? Was it different from what you normally use? I thought you were glad to take off the A/P board to save a little more room in the locker. Then your great new cover stuck out even further all down the line. You never showed us how you mounted it to the bulkheads. Do you expect us to actually start thinking for ourselves! 🙂
hate to throw more tasks your way but those janki portlight covers you use to block glare from the camera need a more permanent solution for when you get to the tropics
Question. I’m just back from sailing a Bavaria cruiser 36 for weeks. Now I’m at home sort off sea dizzying feeling at home. mostly it stays for 3 days. Has Eva the same now she’s off the boat for a while?
It takes sometimes 3 weeks for you to get your land legs back which means you don't feel like you're still rocking on the boat while standing on land it does take depends on how long you were out at sea but it can take up to 3 weeks look at the horizon and it'll go away it's just part of being a sailor it happens to everyone
Job well Done Mads ,you better do a Awesome cleanup or you will be sleeping in the New Locker. Mads build your spacers out of Foam fiberglass. It will look better

Nice work on the steering cover, remember when you say that something is made "good enough", that equals most people's idea of perfection.
Just what I thought. For Mads, "perfect" is not quite good enough and for me it's more like "not good, but good enough", haha
for two videos in a row i have the feeling you have a lower energy than before.
I havnt noticed it but maybe still recovering from covid. It took me a few months to get my energy levels back.
Probably covid afterglow. It changes your nerves. I had to do intermittent fasting and dump carbs to feel a wee bit better.
Does that camera at the top of the mast work? I never see any video footage from it.
She is a precious one. Wouldn't let any ol' crane operator in exotic places lift her up for maintenance. The attention to detail is sushi chef level. Respect. Hope you will have plenty more exploration of places around the little blue dot with this magnificent ship.
In the cockpit locker swap out the nuts for dome head nuts it'll save anything chafing on the bolt threads sticking out the back
I loooove when your boat is messy. It means that there is some fun DIY going on 😁👍🏼
I just love watching you move post-in notes to the done column.
One shouldn't do their best with the hope of anothers approval or acceptance; do it for yourself. Keep up the great work. Thanks for sharing
I know the quality of your work, must have broken your heart to run out of putty before perfection. Tears must have run free. Love your work

Such an interesting guy and so easy on the eyes and ears. Mads is such an addictive gentle watch. Man has great style.
Just remember a dive cylinder in heavy weather could as as a battering ram so may not be a good idea to have it near your autopilot!

Mads, I came across your channel about the time you sailed to Denmark and haven't missed an episode since.
You are a confident man doing that in the cabin!
That was very inspiring work, and the final results look excellent. Thanks for sharing enough detail of the required steps. This was a real eye opener vs. a plywood enclosure. Cheers.
Mads, you need a fold up bicycle for your shopping trips ashore!😀🇬🇧love your vids👍
Stay safe and we'll see you next week.

The plywood box over my quadrant fell apart over the years . A Tayana 55
Love the videos! Glad you're enjoying some DIY fun, sure do miss the "adventures with Ava" though! Hope she's enjoying her time in the states.
I hope you're enjoying your stay in Plymouth Mads? Did you get to watch the Sail GP last weekend?
I second Chris’s suggestion!
Plywood to make the cover is an option but I would use see through plexy glass, make it like a fish tank

Another great example of Mads the perfectionist !!😂😂😉
You might need to recalibrate the autopilot due to new full stop for rudder?
I so so so missed , laying glass and the ol glorious sanding phrase.😁
See you👍🏽
Great work once again mate. The auto pilot cover looks great and the storage solution should work a treat. She is looking fantastic
I will love to see where you order and how you get it to your boat...
Hey Mads, great and inspiring videos - what is the name (brand/type) of foam sheets that you're using?
hey, no more drill fill drill for rudder stop?
Hi. What about a task to complete those curtains. We have seen that plastic taped up for quite some time! 😂
Mads your diy tasks are awsome. I was wondering when you will replace those blue tape that hols hatches curtains.
You are using CAD versions 1, ( cardboard aided design)
Talking about smoothing out the autopilot box, is that what they mean by "sea fairing"?😃
Awesome work Mads

Ah yes, what Mads likes doing best some oh glorious sanding and DIY!!
Is there anything special on that green stuff and you can recommend a specific brand or dealer? Looking good once again! 👍

Great video Mads! What if you rotate the tiller arm to starboard 5-10 degrees on the stock to get a better angle for the drive motor?
Thanks for another great video!
You need to add "covers for the windows" to your list so you can get rid of the paper!
You mean like a curtain?
I think the paper is there to act as a 'soft box' for the light for the filming

Is the foam box lighter then the wooden version?
Plywood would be better to use as is thinner and you could have fibreglassed it too. Saving ½ in and looking more streamlined
Does the helm drive need cooling?
I'd like to see you upgrade to a 48v system.
hate to throw more tasks your way but those janki portlight covers you use to block glare from the camera need a more permanent solution for when you get to the tropics
I would give car window tint a try...

A longer tiller arm would decrease the force required to turn it.
