- We're yet again off to France. With our upcoming passage across the Bay Of Biscay, I figured it would be nice to be able to get weather forecasts offshore. In this video, I set up our Iridium Go with PredictWind, and we sail from the UK to Brest in France.

I briefly questioned my sanity as to whether today wasn't already Sunday. A welcome surprise.
Always wish a hand's breadth of water below the keel for the crossing to Spain.

I have heard that the orcas have been distracted by a towed dingy about 15m away, paying less attention to the boat. And a case where motoring in reverse kept them off the rudder, and on the bow, which they did not attack.
Here’s to fair winds and no following Orcas.

Mads....Two simple solutions to your ORCA problem. #1 - paint a large seal on the bottom of your dingy and tow it behind your boat. They won't touch your rudder. If that does not work, #2 - simply apply a large Sea World sticker on your rudder. Problem solved.

No, the Sea World sticker will only cause them to try to jump over the rudder whilst you hear "free Willard" from some place or another.
Have you guys been reading about how the billionaire mega-yacht owners have been dealing with this orca business? Apparently they considered how modern fighter jets deal with incoming heat-seeking missiles, which is that you blast out a shitload of super-hot counter-measures and split. So like now all the billionaires are fitting out their fucking mega-yachts with actual SEAL launchers. I'm not joking. So like when some orca comes sniffing around their rudder, they hit a button and then, *schpoompf, schpoompf, schpoompf* two or three mildly-sedated seals get shot out from the internal counter-measure tanks straight into the yacht's wake. And then apparently the orcas are all, "Rudder? What rudder?" It's like magic--everybody wins if they're not a seal. The main problem with this strategy is that you can't fit seal tanks on small boats.
Dammit. You made my Orca Shield, my Supersonic underwater sound blaster and 12 gauge shotgun obsolete in one post.

Mats, that is ridiculous: as a RYA yachtmaster I can say that there is no shame at all at trying a few times to berth and only to put it through when everything is right. No damage is per definition a good berthing. (provided that there is no shouting, no panic and everyone stays calm.

The affected area is huge, it just shows how far the Orca can travel over a short time.

Mats, I was taught never to jump to the dock. Eventually fall and get injured.
If the docks have horn cleats (which are normal in the US but not Canada) you can always throw a loop of line around a horn cleat, from the boat, and bring the boat to a stop and closer in. Extra advantage, you will be able to cast off on board the boat also.
Nothing wrong with not jumping.

If you think you can avoid the Orca problem, think again. I happen to know several Orcas that watch the channel dutifully, and when that sequence in the opening where you're talking about "vacuum infusion" - well, let's just say you don't want to ask them, "Is that a rudder in your pocket, or are you just happy to see Mads?"

Sea gulls are nasty sounding sometimes and often seem like they are old ladies screaming and crying -especially when they are injured or fighting with other birds and even other sea gulls.

You have so much tech in the boat that it will sink from all that weight... you could manage without all of it and enjoy sailing more. The Orca thing is like winning in the lottery, it is really rare.

Funny I was going to mention the Orcas to you last week. I know about them even here in Australia.
The pump for cleaning the deck is called a bucket...I'm sure you'll find one with bluetooth, if that helps ;)

Regarding the orca problems, as a deterrent you could use seal control bombs if they are available in Europe. Here in the US commercial fishermen use them to scare seals off of their deployed fishing gear, they're about as powerful, and loud as an M80. I think if everyone used these when orcas were sighted the problem would go away.
Given that orca are quite capable of sinking most pleasure sailboats outright if the fancy takes them, and have been known to kill humans in the water, I'm not sure American-style agressive escalation tactics would be advisable. Measures which scare prey species may not produce the same effect on apex predators. And even if they did, underwater detonations may produce injuries to their sensitive and indispensable hearing, which would not be acceptable to either the regulators or the public.

when I first saw those dolphins under your bow, I though "orca!!" another great video. Ava's mastering of reverse osmosis, base and boost pressure was the highlight. Well that and Mads, as-always, being his usual kind self

If I'm not too late, I'd recommend you forego Brest, and tie up in charming Camaret, which will save you an hour, or more if you head for Moulin Blanc Marina, and not need to factor in the tidal stream in the straits of Goulet de Brest.
It's the perfect step off for Biscay. It's my home port, past 4 years.
Brest is ok though, just nothing like as charming and stunning landscape.

Hej Mads One explanation could be the colortone ( Dark / black ) of your bottompaint the attacking Orcas might see the boat as an intruding Orca swimming up side down so they attack the dorsal fin ( AKA the rudder ) , and the reason for the sudden stop is be curse you have left their territory.

It would be nice to see you under full sail. It is a sail boat.
It's a cruising boat. Day sailers have no schedule other than getting home to their marina slip. Sail all you want in a big circle or in a backtrack course.
Cruisers are concerned with weather windows, seasonal migration timelines, tides/currents, daylight arrivals, and even sometimes COVID test windows related with their Visa applications at their arrival entry port when crossing borders. Motoring and/or motor-sailing is a fact of life when you are cruising.
I bet they are sailing right now, they are currently about a quarter to a third of the way across the Bay of Biscay heading South to Spain…going about 4-5 knots.

A few months ago, the orca 'interractions' were in the SW coast of portugal, round to Gibralter. It is interesting that they are moving north. I would be as cautious as you. One tactic I have heard is to reverse the boat, so there is no rudder in the new stern. I will be interested to learn what your defense tactics are.
your rudder doesn't stop being where it is because your trying to back up
@@seabournewolf2298 The aggressive orca are attracted to the stern of a vessel. In reverse, your temporary stern is where your rudder isn't. It is a tactic people have tried, with mixed success.
@@TR4zest there's no evidence to say what part of a boat if any they're "attracted" to. They're ramming boats but mostly bitting the prop and or the rudder. being apex animals they're smart (obviously smarter than you) they may not know what those things do but they will know it by looking at it regardless of the direction the boat is traveling. They're not attacking any other type of boats (power boats, commercial boats). there's a theory a sailboat (by rudder or prop) may have accidently injured a pup and this has become a learned behavior. bottom line...no one knows anything for sure. only thing I know for sure is if a orca threatens my boat im killing it
@@seabournewolf2298 It is typical that someone who hides behind a ridiculous fan-boy name would turn so quickly to insult. All I wrote was that because many of the attacks focus on the rudder, some, while under attack, had tried reversing. Why that inflames you, only you will know. Oh, and they don't attack alone, but in pods of up to 20. You will be killing all of them, will you? As you say, no one (and especially you, apparently) knows anything for sure.

You should have a piece of board on board that can act as substitute rudder along with the means of assembling a rudder post on the outside of the boat. Regardless of Willy shenanigans, if your rudder breaks due to unforeseen circumstances, you're better off having it.
The board can be something like the base of a seat, a piece of material hidden behind cushions etc. And the post, just some round material that can be used in other purposes. On more modern boats where those roles are taken by aluminium extrusions, that's a bit difficult, but back in the day, they were part of the sail system.
Improvisation beats desperation, but preparedness is always the best road.
Here in Portugal the orca issue has become quite a nuisance. This is not a very environmentally friendly solution but I read somewhere that it you become really desperate, try emptying a couple of jerrycans of diesel into the water. Apparently, because of the horrible smell, it makes them go away. Better than sinking...

A lot of GGR boats went through that area recently without orca meetings.

BTW... buses from Brest, extremely cheap, just over €2, flat rate, will take you to Quimper, Camaret, and so many other places. Cheaper still if you buy a Carnet of 10, at the bus depot office. They'll take fold up bikes too, in baggage hold beneath.
