The kitschy use of music, a waking-up-in-the-morning motif, everything shot on campus, clumsily borrowing 'experimental' aesthetics without any intention behind them, no traces of any lived experience - 10/10 brought me back to that place where creativity comes to die
Don't forget the teal shadows, orange mids, and green highs color correction, the vomit educing use of shallow depth of field with enough anamorphic bokeh to mistake a single Christmas light for vertical laser beam, all while shaking the camera like you missed your insulin shot.
As someone who went to a student film festival for my one friend in film school, the alarm clock opening SENT me I didn't realize it was so ubiquitous. I didn't realize at the time how weird it was that every other movie started with that. (my friend won btw, he cooked up a banger 🙏)
It's astonishing how accurate this is. I went to film school in the UK over 20 years ago, and yet I saw almost this exact film several times a year. I'm also probably guilty of some elements myself. Weird how universal the archetypal bad student film (still) is.
In all I know about filmmaking I learned from the toxic avenger Lloyd Kauffman brings up a really god point (back in 1998) that indie filmmakers are trying less to make good original films with what they have and are instead just making crappy auditions for Hollywood using attempted Tarantino and smith dialogue instead of trying to tell a captivating story.
Yes! FADE IN: ALARM CLOCK. Every time! When I was in film school our professor said we would get kicked out of the program if there was one single shot of an EMPTY SWING on a playground. Especially if it was blowing listlessly in the wind at 48 fps.
I was immediately sold when I saw the alarm clock. They always start with a damn alarm clock
Same
Same lol
It’s true but mine ends with a guy throwing up a rat so at least I have that going for me
I started in a couple student films in college and, yeah, three of them started with an alarm clock.
@@calebthornblad1831dude i wanna see this
You know its a student film because i wasnt even halfway through and it felt like i had been watching it for an hour
I think you're confusing this video with the "GUCCI GANG" music video
The only unrealistic part was how well-mixed the dialogue is lol
yeah where's the audio in the right ear only
Damn, I didn't know Heroin was so nicely packaged
real.
Only the heroin you get from dealers near middle schools
Canadian Walmart brand Aspirin has Codeine

Where creativity goes to die is so accurate lol
The Manic pixie dream girl 😭😭😭
How am I supposed to empathize with a character if I don't see them wake up, brush their teeth and go to work just like me?
Don't forget the teal shadows, orange mids, and green highs color correction, the vomit educing use of shallow depth of field with enough anamorphic bokeh to mistake a single Christmas light for vertical laser beam, all while shaking the camera like you missed your insulin shot.
This is so specific 😭😭😭
feeling very seen as a student filmmaker who's made a movie about taking drugs and about jumping off a parking garage
So…a student filmmaker.
scot pilgrim ahh film
SCOTT PILGRIM REFERENCE‼️‼️🤩⁉️🔥🥶⁉️🦅😈🤘😜
I’m in lesbians w you 😜
I’m in lesbians now with moon beam
Dude, I’m reporting you. You can’t just repost MY student film and claim it as your own.
uhhh
Its clearly a joke@@ItsIvom
XD
Excuse me? This is MY student film.
@@idekaaaIC, Stop the cap!!! It took me 4 years to make this film!!! It’s mine, and mine only!!!
Realizes his software has special effects. Must use every last one
This is the perfect short film. Film festivals are gonna eat this one up
Just missing the black screen with the iPhone alarm at the beginning and unnecessary amount of cuts😂😂😂 this is gold
And the texts foreshadowing future events and characters
all that's missing is the "it was all a dream" ending.
something about the "wait am i supposed to kill myself" i just LOVE
Because it's the definition of the writer forcing the characters doing something they wouldn't genuinely do in a situation. Happens often.
This is a piece of art that belongs in a museum. You really captured the student film genre.
I didn't know heroin was a hallucinogenic.
Or comes in a pill bottle
"I'm really going for a slice-of-life existential drama with hints of comedy, romance, and psychological thriller elements thrown in."
UA-cam recommending so much art to me lately. UA-cam is so back
@@JazzyAnne HOLY SHIT YOURE MY IDOL

Why do you go?
- Because
How do I end the film?
- Just
I’m starting to realize maybe I would’ve been accepted to film school if I didn’t have a damn alarm clock as my first shot
Just one critique: this should be in black and white
Unrealistic. Film students are too afraid to use copyrighted music
I love how the shot looking over the edge was taken in a completely different time of day.
As someone who went to a student film festival for my one friend in film school, the alarm clock opening SENT me I didn't realize it was so ubiquitous. I didn't realize at the time how weird it was that every other movie started with that. (my friend won btw, he cooked up a banger 🙏)
I appreciate how "3 minutes" lands exactly at 3 minutes into the video
the *equate* branded heroin was *WILD* 😂
Love it, but where's the randomly pulled gun and cigarette being smoked by someone who's never smoked before??
must've been awkward watching all the student films exactly like this in class afterward
and they always act like theyre fucking geniuses 💀
As someone currently writing a movie script for the hell of it, this was a great guide on what NOT to do.
not the heroin trip 😭
It's astonishing how accurate this is. I went to film school in the UK over 20 years ago, and yet I saw almost this exact film several times a year. I'm also probably guilty of some elements myself. Weird how universal the archetypal bad student film (still) is.
probably the most realistic part was how there's a very obvious motion stabilizer in one of the shots
Nobody over 25 on camera. It all checks out.
I LOVE OTC HEROIN!! 😝
This is what happens when you tell a film student to watch Fight Club
I was like "i bet it starts with an alarm clock"
We got rinsed by my old lecturers for starting our student film with an alarm clock 😂
PERFECT ENDING LMAO
my dyslexia thought it's: Every film student ever and was expecting typical day for someone studying film at uni
DePaul representation!
I feel sick watching this.
Well done.
this is so accurate lmao. I hate the starting walking segments so damn much.
The alarm clock is crazy
2:43 DDUUUUUUDEEE, JUST WHEN I SAID OUTLOUD IS HE GOING TO KILL HIMSELF HE SAID IT!!!
I smelled half the other shots when I saw that alarm clock!
I may be guilty of exactly this
I was so invested the whole time
Respect to the 50 person cast and crew
In all I know about filmmaking I learned from the toxic avenger Lloyd Kauffman brings up a really god point (back in 1998) that indie filmmakers are trying less to make good original films with what they have and are instead just making crappy auditions for Hollywood using attempted Tarantino and smith dialogue instead of trying to tell a captivating story.
The fact that this is better than most of the local student films I’ve watched, but also still spot on
I love that the ending looks like the director actually wants the actor to off themselves so they can film it 😭
That heroin prop is genius
Not the being high on drug scene!!! hahahahaaha
LOL, this is peak comedy in my opinion. Simple and effective 😂
No he jumps then back to the alarm clock
Literally he´s Scott Pilgrim, and she Ramona Flowers.
You hit every damn mark
This shit is JJJJUUUST MY SPEED LMAO YOURE HILARIOUS
On our first year of uni we had to do like 1 shortfilm every 2 weeks, I can tell you that this video was a mix of them all hahshsh
equate brand heroin 😭😭😭😭 walmart is getting desperate
The best student film I’ve seen out of Depaul in months
I love Scott pilgrim
The fucking alarm clock and wake up montage
This should be played in the first day of every film school
I imagined brushing the teeth scene and it didn't disappoint me😂
Soo Meta. Love the retro vibe. Well done. Looks like you had fun!
I just gave you an Oscar for this video.
I feel called out
You captured it dude
Man the drug induced colour was so spot on. The carefree use copyright music so spot on.
This made me laugh so much. Hilarious execution.
i laughed so hard at the herion tablets
This was hilarious, I laughed out loud. Can you make more? For every genre maybe? "every students sci fi ever", "every student horror film ever" etc
This is gold
the alarm clock lmao
the pace of my writing after one edgar wright film
You forgot the ‘camera inside fridge’ shot. And instead of killing yourself, you could have end the film by waking up again like it was all a dream
The million needle drops is so real
Yes! FADE IN: ALARM CLOCK. Every time!

Banger ending🔥
Yes! It’s always a full-length story cut down to heck just to squeeze it into a tiny runtime. Had my fair share of these mistakes!
Good job guys
I feel personally attacked
Actual absolute cinema
ironically the tounge-and-cheek "every student film" short film is also a massive cliche in student films.
I really hope that you got an A+ for this
Damn, Equate is going hard now. Good for them.
Well thought out shots! Great film!
The distortion effect lmao
Man made a student film about student films
This feels Scott Pilgrim inspired 😭
i love the ending
Stop this is seriously giving early *2010s* student short film vibes and I'm here for it !! I'm not the only one who sees this right??
ITS ALWAYS THE FUCKING ALARM CLOCK
I’m charmed.
(The heroin high is accurate btw for anyone who hasn’t tripped out on it yet!)
pretty good ending tbh
