I remember when I was a kid, I had a blue Heeler pup, about 4 or 5 months old. I was in the yard and the pup kept nosing the grass, I went over and watched, he was trying to herd ants in the grass. Another time he tried to herd our carrier pigeons. He did herd out chickens. Later we put him to work alongside a good bitch on cattle, he learned more from her in a week than I could have taught him in a year. My Dad sold him at 12 months old and the Rancher that bought him used to walk up to me in the street with him walking with him and tell me about his exploits, I think that rancher was more proud of him than of his kids. That rancher bought other dogs off my Dad and ended up with a great line of working dogs himself.
She knows better now, but man she loves it when I let her and we wrestle from time to time. When I say, "enough," she stops and has been the best dog you could ever want.
I have a 3½ month old Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog) right now - had it for 2-weeks ( got it from an Amish farm). Your video pretty much exemplifies my experience every morning. ▪︎ ACDs are beautiful canines, but they are a hand full of dog. My ACD pup is shockingly strong. She can jump 3½-feet vertically with ease. And she has virtually unlimited energy and endurance. ▪︎ Anyone considering getting one better think twice. The Australian Cattle Dog is a physical phenom.
Yep. My first two weeks I had a problem keeping her in her little pen I built for her. She would climb the walls in the corner and use her head to pull herself over the top. LOL She jumps into the bed of my truck now - with the tailgate up - with very little effort. Don't worry, my Vega has slowed down a little bit. She just wants to work. She loves her ball and loves to help pull up roots. Just starting to get into the water now also and loves it. At one year old now, she is at the point where she is ready to learn. I did the research and started socializing her as much as I could with other people and other dogs right away. She is now overly affectionate to everyone. If you have the time, you will have a loyal and fun loving pet for life!
I couldn't agree more. Mine can now jump up into the bed of my truck with the tailgate up. Once while riding on a dirt road, she flew out the window like superman, going after a squirrel she saw.
As my pup "Cooper " has been growing he's very smart . Learning more & more each day . He's getting better w/Barking. He is constantly barking at me or other dogs barking .. ... and nearing her first birthday, she hasn't slowed down a bit. Now, she asks permission to play and just wants to work. Wouldn't it be great if more humans were like that?😃
@@willpowerprds They do love a job and a playtime absolutely. Ours keeps me young even thought she wears us out. But she does know when to stop. Nearing two as well. They are so frigging smart. And they are so protective and loyal.
My girl meets me with something in her mouth as well. Not daylight, and she wants to fetch already. She is a blue red cross.Quite often, my first coffee gets cold because of my critters. Love them dearly.💗💗
Man this brings back memories. I still get the leg grabs here and there. Lol my blue is 2 now he’s coming around to be great there to smart for there own good sometimes
Agreed. Especially when it's cold outside and she is feeling really frisky, and I'm not paying attention to her. I'll be walking and she will stand up and walk backwards in front of me to get my attention, and if I ignore her, she will get behind me and try to give me a nip to demand some attention. LOL. She will always stop if I tell her to or sometimes I just have to say, "don't even think about it," (if I'm in the middle of working on a project), and she understands. Makes me feel a little guilty, so I always take a minute to acknowledge her. 😁
That's it! I read years ago in a Heeler guide book, "When they are young and relatively untrained, when they get excited they have a barely suppressable urge to bite heels". Amen! (Five Heelers in now!)
They slow down a little, but not much. Vega is just over a year old now, and when she's feeling frisky, and not paying attention, she will get like that again, but will always stop when told. Most times I will engage and we wrestle a lot of the time.
Also if you can get a hold of a KONG frisbee they love frisbee. And that frisbee is indestructible and you can really throw it for a huge run. Tires them out. Our girl loves her frisbee. We can not even say the work haaa. But it really helps take care of a lot of energy and they are happy.
Oh yes, I tell everyone the same thing. I did my due diligence before finding Vega. She's with me 24/7 and at 2 years old her energy is off the charts! ua-cam.com/video/h2XgTRGTWH8/v-deo.html
My last one was a Heeler/Jack Russell mix - smartest dog in the world. My heart will never mend from her loss. I got Vega because I couldn't function after the loss. Vega is full Blue Heeler and a miniature. They are a lot to handle but after one year she is really learning a lot, very fast.
Mine was very athletic and under my feet at every opportunity. He is an exceptional jumper. NOw at 5 months he is starting to become calmer, less nippy... hang in there, the wait is worth the effort. HE PROTECTS a flock of buff Orphingtons.
Yes, Vega has slowed down, now that she understands and we can communicate better. She pays attention and listens intensely now. She wants nothing more than to get more praise and play time.😄
Actually, as a breed description maybe, but Vega was not born with a stumpy tail. Her tail was docked at birth by the breeder. She comes from a line of Heelers, (as recognized by the AKC), bred for their smaller size and longer legs which enables her to jump much higher and move more quickly through thick brush and has lightning fast reflexes. Both her parents are hard working small Heeler dogs, (father from Louisiana and mother in Alabama). What I like mostly is her beautiful Blue/Back coat with tiny black/white spot on top of her head. She exhibits all the other characteristics of a Blue Heeler with her instinctive herding abilities, heel nipping, independence, speed, agility, and superior intelligence with an unimaginable desire to work. Here in the south, I've deterred her from going after the dangerous snakes we have, but praise her for pointing them out to me, but she's already caught a couple rats, birds, and my favorite... mosquitos and even a common house fly while in flight.
@@jimnasium1243 Anyone would have a hard time proving that to me. I'm with her 24/7 and she shows no sign what so ever, in being hindered in any way, by not having the extra 4" of tail the breeders removed. She has better balance and agility than any other dog we've met so far. She's healthy, happy, and loving dog... that's enough for me. I hate to think a portion of her tail would change any of that. Next people will be saying I shouldn't trim her nails, or get her shots, or even take her to the vet regularly because, "it's not natural." Ha!
Blue Heeler AKA Tasmanian Devil!!! I was recently going through some folders on my laptop looking at old videos of when my Zippy was young and I noticed I had scratch marks and cuts all over my forearms 😆😆
I figured that out when I looked after seeing your comment. Some were posted just a few days ago and I thought... "wait a minute, I've seen these before." At the time, I had my best friend, "Gator," (a Jack-Heeler), and was my reason for getting up every day. I still have videos of her I haven't been able to watch yet. It was too rough losing her nearly 2 years ago. That's why I got Vega. My brother said you and Zippy reminded him of me and Gator and sent me one of your UA-cam videos. That was a long time ago. My 3.5 Yr old still does exactly that when trying to get me to play with him. Love nips and he's so fast you can't stop him. If I get mad and challenge him he does mega burnouts and does circles around me sometimes nipping me in the ass as he fly's by. He thinks it's a lot of fun cause I can't catch him. With the right command he will cease but usually I let him have his fun or I submit and throw the frisbee or ball which is what he wants.
LOL... same here. Everyone once in a great while I will let her when we are rough playing, but she knows by the tone of my voice, when to stop. Like a kid, when she doesn't want to stop playing, she will test me occasionally. When I clap my hands one time, she knows it's serious and backs down. She really doesn't like the sound. Same thing when she hears a gun shot or fireworks in the distance. I've been training her to "herd a basket ball," back to me when I throw it out. That wears her out more and faster than anything. She gets so excited and yet frustrated when it doesn't roll in the direction she pushes it - and sometimes stops with her belly resting on top of the ball when she needs to take a break. 😄
@@willpowerprds Here is an old video with a big herding ball. I also found it to be a great way to tire him out. ua-cam.com/video/MXmdmNXz6mw/v-deo.html
my Stella would shred me apart and leave me bleeding from the ankles, knees and thighs. She would be so proud of herself and still shows off to other ppl how well she herd me (without biting, scratching or body checking, now). it took three years to get her to leave me alone and stop the behaviours your pup is displaying, fwiw. nip it in the bud.....
Sorry to hear that. It only took a couple weeks of repeating the command to stop. She still wants to, when really feeling frisky will pretend to nip, but from a distance. She already knows from the tone of my voice when I'm serious.
My 3rd heeler Rukus was notorious for shoe laces. Could untie your shoe in mid step at supernatural speed and wait eagerly for me to re-tie while cussing. Only to do it again…. Fond memories over time, but frustrating in real time.
Vega only does now when it's cold out and she's feeling real frisky. She stands up on her back legs walking backwards in front of me when I'm walking, to get my attention. If I ignore her, then she resorts to try a little nip on the back of my ankles. She always stops when I tell her to though. She's about a year and four months old now. 😜
Yeah, I was and still struggling with the loss of my Jack-Heeler, "Gator," after 14 years together 24/7. I got Vega because I couldn't function. She is a handful and keeps me busy being a parent again. She'll end up stealing my heart also. She is so different and is just about everything I've read about Heelers... smart, hard headed, loyal, mischievous, loving and tough. It's great to be a Heeler Dad. 😁
Dogs want to know their place. If that puppy was in a pack, how many seconds would he get away with that behavior? How much higher are humans than pack-leader dogs? There are a dozen options for correcting that sort of behavior - all less forceful than what that dog's pack-leader father would do. There's a leash, crate, give him a bath (more of a "mom" thing, but will put the dog in his place and burn-off energy), throw ball game (use two balls, so you control the action), start training him to herd those chickens, swim in the pond (looks like a place that might have a pond?), "submission" the dog and chest-rub... Plenty of options. There's just no excuse for that behavior, even from a young puppy. OK he's older now and does it less, but if he's still jumping on people the problem is not solved. Be the leader. Heelers are known for intelligence and discipline. You are wasting the dog's capability and going against his breed and his nature. He's your dog. Do what you will.
I have owned and bred/raised numerous of Heelers, (on a working ranch and just at home) and I'm telling you this is the first time I've ever seen one grab your leg with her front legs to try to get you to stop. She is not near as bad about jumping up on people and if she does try she responds to to the command to get down. Trust me when I say that Will is one of the most patient and efficient trainers I know and as they say, "This ain't his first rodeo" with Heelers. This is just the most unusual Heeler (or any dog) I've ever seen. And I've raised different hunting dogs, German Shepards, Heeler and Heeler crosses and Jack Russells in my 67 years on this earth (and no I did not run a puppy mill. We were blessed with good hunting dogs, cattle dogs and companion (for lack of a better term) dogs that people were always asking for pups from them.
How in the world would you know what a dog wants? Especially a 6 month old puppy? Geeze... there is an excuse for that behavior, it's called, "instinct," and it's a playful and fun one at that. She has grown into one of the smartest, loving, and obedient dogs I have ever seen, anywhere, and getting better every day. I couldn't ask for a more perfect pet and she will live the best life I can possibly give her.
Thanks. She just turned 1 year old. I watched your Blue Heeler Magic video. It amazes me how well they can see in the dark. Vega can fetch a ball thrown in total darkness and bring it back in less than a minute. Currently were are working on retrieving a basket ball by herding it back to me. She's able to do it about 4 out of 6 tries.
No, she does not. She knows the difference between what is play or serious. Uses her mouth and teeth the same way we would use our hands. We just can't take in food & water through our hands. 😁
Almost too friendly. She is only 1 year old, but I socialized her as much as I could, as I've read from all the experts. Both with people and other dogs. She runs to see and wants to play with everyone. She is now learning not to jump up to people she meets. It's a hard habit to break, especially when people say, "awh, it's alright," or "it's ok," I have to remind them that she is still learning so I have to correct her. Not so much lately. She just gets excited always wants someone to play with. The biggest annoyance, is that since I trained her to fetch a ball and bring it back, she is constantly bringing it to me and drops it in front of me constantly. Even when I ignore her and tell her no. It was kind of hard to say no at first, but she is very persistent and learning the command, "not now."
The dog is probably p*ssed off because some idiot chopped his tail off. It's unjustified mutilation and also unethical. People don't seem to realize dogs have a tail for a good reason, without one it impairs a dog's ability to communicate properly, leaving them highly vulnerable to being misunderstood by other dogs and humans and placing them at a distinct social disadvantage. Tail docking does cause a young puppy tremendous pain. Disliked.
This person is obviously uneducated and ignorant to the millions of scientific studies that show quite the opposite of what his personal opinion is regarding tail docking. When tail docking is done by the veterinarian within 5 days after birth, the nerve endings in the tail have not even developed yet, so is no way the new born pup can "feel," anything. There are no pathways to send any sensation of pain or any other stimuli to the brain. After nearly 2 years now, Vega displays more agility, speed, and coordination than her undocked siblings. I could not ask for a more happy & healthy dog that loves life and a chance to work and play. I am so fortunate to her in my life and am so proud of the joy she brings to everyone she meets. Truly the most intelligent and athletic dog I have ever seen in my 50+ years of observation and caring of dogs
@@willpowerprds You fail to mention many dogs use their tail like a rudder, for balance, it's also used as a soicial signal. I don't give a fig about your quoted studies or about your personal opinion and I don't care if you don't accept mine. It's going against Mother Nature, dogs have tails for a very good reason. I would suggest you are the one who is bowing to a fad or fashion and being ignorant about it.

@@willpowerprds Here is an old video with a big herding ball. I also found it to be a great way to tire him out. ua-cam.com/video/MXmdmNXz6mw/v-deo.html
Sounds like my Cooper, he's crazy funny 😁
Blue so cute 🥰👍🏼
lol...this is my heeler too...❤️
Everything Australian has that much energy in the morning.....even the Sheila's😂
I'll have to take your word for that. I wouldn't know. 😁
Pretty much sums it up haha 😆
Totally worth it though, such amazing dogs.
So true!
Bandit and bluey live adaption :D
pretty sure my heeler owns me not me owning her lol
my Stella would shred me apart and leave me bleeding from the ankles, knees and thighs.
My Blue Heeler stopped nipping at about 2 to 2 1/2 years old. He’s 6 now and sometimes my wife tells me “I wish he still nipped us.”
Cute my boy was just like that.
Reminds me of a little gremlin. :-0
Oh. So true!!! 😂
Comprei um pra minha residência será que vai dar certo?
no hablo espanol
😂 so awesome!
I'd be so lost without my blue girl
Yeah, I was and still struggling with the loss of my Jack-Heeler, "Gator," after 14 years together 24/7. I got Vega because I couldn't function. She is a handful and keeps me busy being a parent again. She'll end up stealing my heart also. She is so different and is just about everything I've read about Heelers... smart, hard headed, loyal, mischievous, loving and tough. It's great to be a Heeler Dad. 😁
@@willpowerprds check out my girl Lucy the blue heeler. She's the best dog in town I can take her anywhere and do pretty much everything with her
Tenho um blue heeler com 12 anos..lembro quando era filhote ..adorava morder um calcanhar..melhor cachorro do mundo ..
No Espanyol
What kind of jobs do you all have for your heeler?
What kind of job do I have for my one year old ACD? To be healthy, happy, and obedient. She excels in all areas.
How awesome!
I have two.!!!
That's great they have each other to play with.
yepp... that's about rite... HB
i remember that
Yup.
24/7
Por que seu Blue Heerler não tem rabo??. Quero muito acreditar que não tenha sido retirado
Sorry, I only speak English.
Does he bite?
No, she does not. She knows the difference between what is play or serious. Uses her mouth and teeth the same way we would use our hands. We just can't take in food & water through our hands. 😁
@@willpowerprds Is she friendly?
Hi uncle willam
Hello Makayla
😂😂😂
Yup lmao
😜
