Hi from Annie again forgot to mention my own tips for weeding, well hot water works well, then pulling it out by hand, also sprinkle butcher's salt over gravel and stone paths works wonders.I had a lot of gravel paths a while ago and it worked best that salt was bought from butcher himself as they use it too on their floors etc in the shop, last time I got it few years ago now it was very reasonable price. Thou not many family butchers around these days as supermarkets taken their business it is a real shame, nothing like going to local family shop and chatting awhile being served it is a personal touch. Also I have used vinegar from the bottle direct.

I'm a beginner at gardening. Started five years ago, very slowly and with annuals only. Last year I ventured out and bought perennials, which I transferred into containers and sometime in August I planted them in the ground- My attitude was they're going to die anyway, well to say I was surprise when this summer they started popping up and grew to triple their size and the blooms were out of this world ( well my world) was such a surprise. I find peace when I'm gardening, its like I'm in another world. I talk to them, I take away dead blooms and I even deadhead them. I started watching your UA-cam channel about a year ago and fell in love with your garden. And I got to say that this new garden has taught me so much. The process is long and a bit tedious but so gratifying. Thank you!

I recently spent two weeks away. When I arrived home at 10:30 pm I went straight to the back yard through my French doors, and gasped when I saw that a huge rose bush was blooming white in the dark night. I missed my personal paradise so much. Instead of unpacking the next few days, I spent most of my time remedying and enjoying the garden. Kindred spirits.

    OMG
We're going on vacation soon, and I'm stressing about being gone from the gardens. We're in a drought pattern with very little rain, so I water every day. I have a 15-gallon tank on the back of my golf cart. It takes hours to water everything. I know it will be one of the first things I do upon returning.
Thanks to you, Stewart, and your crew for the great videos.

The gardens are looking amazing, Linda. It certainly does not look like a new garden. That little boxwood basil is perfect in your garden. I think we could call your front gardens a “pollinator paradise”.
One of the tools I find very helpful when weeding isn’t a garden tool at all. I’m elderly and cannot kneel anymore. I have to use a seat on wheels to garden. I have found BBQ tongs very helpful. I can reach small weed starts out of reach of my hands and pluck out the weeds. Saves me having to move my seat into areas where there’s not a walkway. 🥰🦋🕊

I am glad I started gardening when my kids are adults, otherwise they would have been neglected kids! My garden is absolutely my first priority, and I don't stop thinking about it while I am away on vacation. I get back home and spend a good hour walking through it and assessing. In the end, nobody takes care of it like I do!!!

If I have been gone for any length of time the first thing I do is check my gardens. My gardens bring me comfort and peace. I can block out the crazy world when I am in the garden.I have so many gardens that I brake them down into zones. This makes a big job manageable.

When the weather is cooler, it’s nothing like going out into the garden and hearing the birds and enjoying time as we weed from time to time. It’s a time of prayer, relaxation and love of nature for me. My garden isn’t very big, but that being said, it’s a time that I can think about the good things of life. I hope that makes sense. Sending hugs, love, prayers.and kindness ❤

Now that I’m in my seventies, I have to use a milk crate and two square cushions for support. One cushion for top of crate and one cushion for my knees. The cushions fit perfectly on the square on top of milk crate, and allow two handed procedures, when weeding along with a tarp for composting.

As Texas Master Gardeners, we follow a Texas A&M protocol called Integrated Pest Management. We observe what the changes are in the plant. Note what kind of pests might attack a certain plant. Then begin to apply the control for the pest of that plant. Sometimes it is just a burst of water from the garden hose. Other times it is manual dismissal of the pest. Then we work our way down the different applications whether it be DE, fireplace ashes or something systemic. Reminds me of a computer coding class…if then…and/or…….

Not the same as up close and personal (spotting weeds) but shows what's working, what's not, where something's needed...or not. A real eye-opener, no pun intended. Planning to do that myself the next cloudy day. (The VA garden visit was great, by the way.)

I’ve been collecting antique garden tools for a while and I love using old funky hoes and little mini pitch forks and some things I don’t even know what they are, to weed my gardens. It’s so fun to pick up an instrument that somebody used (and probably forged and constructed themselves) over 100 years ago and the long handles save my back. It’s just fun to have them strewn around the garden edge because they are each unique and useful in their own way-and beautiful! I wonder if the little kitty swacked the poor butterfly? Oh….makes me sad when stuff like that happens. The hazards of gardening-it happens-but it always makes you feel horrible when it does. Could feel your heartbreak. On a happy note, the garden looks spectacular-so lush and the pinks and purples with the hydrangea are so WOW! 💜

Questions of the Day: YES! But I also have to leave instructions for my hubby (with pictures and some videos) about how to manage the care of the garden while I'm away and as capable as he is, I worry the whole time I'm gone that I'm going to come back to something dead. I live in Arizona and even the slightest lack of water will kill something so I'm pretty neurotic at times.

Butterflies drink water from wet cement or crevices that may hold minute amounts of water. I have a short video showing one doing that while I had watered and had a wet walkway. On another note, why is it so satisfying watching Linda dig up weeds, I know I watched ti w great satisfaction :)

Question of the day answer: Cerinthe or Honeywort. Also, you may want to stop pinching as they flower and thrive best in cooler temps. You may miss best flowering if you keep pinching and delaying the process 🙂 if you let them go to seed, they will also happily reseed elsewhere for you. Bees love them and it’s SO cute to see their little butts hanging out of the flowers!

I've been working really hard on my side garden (the neighbors are generously 🙄overspraying with their sprinklers) that Bermuda keeps sneaking back. I've been battling it daily with my horihori as well.
We go on vacation soon, so I'll be taking a picture and see how crazy the Bermuda is when I get back.
I guess you could say I'm channeling my inner Linda Vater💚.
Our friend came by and saw my horihori and he referred to it as my Rambo knife as well😂.
Just signed up for Planta, but I wasn't able to figure out where to load the primo code.
Loving the garden and your channel so much. Keep bringing us your adventures💚💚💚

Oh yes. First thing is to check my flowers etc. Usually pull a few weeds as I go around.

I set a timer on my watch for 15 minute intervals. Amazing how much weeding you can accomplish in 15 minutes. Love the hori hori knife. Indespensible. I recently purchased a fiskar stand up weeder. It is amazing for tough weeds with long taproots. Bought some of the basil boxwood seed and it germinated in about 5 days. I have mine in a set of blue and yellow pots with a French country pattern.

Mulch is the best way I keep weeds down. Sometimes when starting a new bed I put down layers of newspaper or cardboard to help smother the weeds and then put 4-5 inches of mulch on top. There are times I go outside to do one thing in the garden and 4 hours later come inside 😊

Love this!!! I also putz around the garden beds and weed daily. We were on vacation for a week and I couldn't believe how the weeds exploded with our heat and little bit of rain, north of Tulsa.

I’m from Wisconsin but now in southeast Michigan to be closer to my grandsons. I miss Door County so much, but need to visit Holland one day! 🌸

Today, I finished planting my geraniums, the last of my annuals...until I buy more, so I feel really good about that. Phew!
But we are in another drought in Minneapolis. Year 3. 😮‍💨 Even watering the area first I encounter dry powder (sandy soil) under the moist soil so I leave my metal hose on a trickle to saturate after planting.
And the Canadian forest fires are really strong, very smokey outside today.
I am working on a project, I've mentioned it several times. I've suppressed weeds and quack grass with cardboard. It's hot enough that the weeds are spilling out from under the cardboard. I best get going early in the morning to avoid the heat. I want this project done so I can do light maintenance as you did and sit back with an iced coffee to enjoy the results of my labors. 😊
