Heh, these kinds of motors are always fun, especially if you have onsite backup generation. We used to have a 2250HP centrifugal chiller that when we started it up it would piss off the hospital because it dragged the whole grid down so bad their emergency gens started up.

Wow a long start. A company I worked at had an old 1950 motor on a belt drive refrigeration compressor that had such a cool start up sound, we would turn it of and start it many times a day. It had such a thick iron casing it hardly got hot. Great 50 year old motor.

hahaha, this is the main motor for the draft fan at HP-3 at the Martinez PBF plant! I worked there as an I&E tech. This exact motor failed to start multiple times during the shutdown we were trying to come up from. That shack on the left is the stack air sampling shack for emissions monitoring, and I led the team that installed all the new tube for the air sampling from the top of the stack down to the shack itself.

I worked in a power station years ago and part of my job was starting the four big fans ( two induced draught and two forced draught) after setting up the air path dampers and before lighting the heavy oil burners. Always impressed by seeing the ammeters maxed out for several seconds before settling back to their running amps. I can't remember the current, but they operated on 6,600 volts. Thanks for the video. Happy memories!

I used to be a generating station operator for the Los Angeles DWP. I worked this steam electric generating stations for 34 years. So I am familiar with the startup of these large 4160 volt motors. When we were starting up a unit these large motors would peg the ammeter for many seconds. They would also slightly dim the control room lights when these motors were started. Also these motors made a lot of noise when spinning up to speed.
