  • Rubometric 5/16" DS geometric die head operation is shown on a small South Bend 9" lathe. A spare tail stock ram has been modified to hold ER32 collets. Also shows how you can use the DRO to adjust the length of the thread cut.

You are missing the handle for the manual release. I have the Rubometric 1" D and when you rotate that handle It will do a light cut with the handle rotated out and deep cut with the handle laid against the head. The knurled screw is to remove the chasers.

Yes, you can still adjust it to exact depth with the set screws. So that’s an extra nice feature in the D models which, for some reason Geometric never added to the DS and DSA models. No other manufacturer that copied the Geometric heads added that feature to any other head other than the D either. Too bad, I’d love it on my DSA heads.

Can you tell me the purpose of the knurled screw? And if it's spring loaded.

The knurled knob is a spring loaded release. You pull it out and rotate when you want to change the threading dies and it releases the head to rotate far enough to let the dies come in and out. The dies are numbered 1 though 4 and have to go into the exact corresponding slot.

Tom, I have the same Die Head, the problem I was having was the spring mechanism was missing inside the Knurled Knob release mechanism and it was stuck in the closed position. I cleaned it and got it un-stuck. The dowel pin is in there but you have to turn the die upside down and shake it to get it to release. I can make the missing parts if I knew what they looked like? Is it possible you can tell me what I'm missing? I unscrewed the knob and no springs are in there and only one short dowel pin is inside. Nothing to push it up when you pull on the knob. Other than that the die works great.
