- Sharpening Dies or Thread Chasers for Geometric Die Heads. This is a Geometric 9/16 D Die Head. I use the Die Head on my Turret Lathes. I make a nice jig to hold the Thread Chasers an duse my Surface Grinder for the grinding. This works great. This is well worth the effort since chasers are $100 to $200 a set. By sharpening you get a lot of life from them.

If I live to 100 I may get as good as you, Love the vids. Learn a lot from you and lot's of others. You guys are amazing.
Well Jay I hope you make it. Thank you.
Very well done Randy learn more than I ever wanted to know ;-)
Isn't that wonderful. Expanding you brain. Thanks Bill.
That is a grinding/sharpening form tool for screw machines. They grind the flat side.
Yes I think mostly for Tangent chasers. Thanks Kirk.
GREAT VIDEO !!
Thank you.
Used to work with various dieheads many years ago, Coventry, Landmatic, Namco, Wagner. The best were the Namco which had round chasers. Each type had it's own fixture for regrinding and as you say angles were different for each material.
Thank you Andy. Using a die is great when making a bunch of parts.
Just curious, is there a limit on the width of the 30 degree chamfer
I think anything past 45 would not help. Thanks JR.
Please lose the music!
ok
This is great! I picked up a geometric die head recently, and despite being a God fearing American, I find myself wanting some metric dies but cant really find any. How difficult do you think making some would be? What steel would you recommend for this? Thanks!
They can be difficult to find. I get mine from MSC link: www.mscdirect.com/product/details/75242255 as a reference.
Metric are even harder to find. I think they are made from HSS.
Got a job coming up that will involve one of your nice dovetail cutters. :-)
Nice. Thanks Brian.
Fun stuff👍. Love the detail and setups needed for tool grinding.
Nice when it works out. Imagine trying to do it for money 😁
Yep worked out great. Worth the effort. Thanks Steve.
Hi Randy, somewhere i have the Coventry die head, that's the English style of chaser arrangement, made sharpening jig for their chasers, can't for the life of me remember where I put it but it is only a few years deep in the clutter so should be able to find it. When I do, would you like to see a run abound it? It might have some features you could copy, but i have to admit i have never used it myself so not particularly au fait with its finer points.

Thanks Chris, i have not seen that type.
Excellent presentation. If you need a testimonial on the dovetail cutters let me know because there awesome
Thanks Jim.
great video..discussion/demonstration/buiild
Thank you Chuck, Great Screwyball Swap meet. Julie named it. Thanks for putting it on.
Nice job Randy. I have a pile of H&G die heads to freshen. They are very neat and had to be very complex when they originated. Nice overview.
Thanks Dan.
Thanks for the video Randy,
Just in time for I have a 10-32 die that is getting dull and I'll need it for an upcoming job and I had no idea on how to sharpen them. (can I borrow your pattern?)
Some of my dies look like someone did them on the pedestal grinder!!
Did you say that you had a PDF of the book?
I will get an email to you with it. Thanks Eric. No problem with the pattern.
I love any kind of "turret" anything! Great stuff Randy!
Thanks Scout. It is kind of fun to use.
As always, a pleasure to enjoy one of your excelent video's!!
Just curious if you can give me some info about the music.
I play trumpet myself and never heard this piece of music.
I hope you have a title of the music.
Kind regards from Holland,
Ron Veraart
Just free stuff from You tube. I am not a music guy.
Kill the music
ok
Hi Randy great video! Check the video when you engage the die it looks like it pulls the stock downwards. Can you adjust the height of the die??
Thank you LLoyd. Sometimes just at the start, when all the dies engage it is centered.
You certainly do have some nice tools.
A few, not a lot. Thanks Harold.
Dear Randy
Is there a retirement age for chief engineers or can you keep working just curious?
Christopher from Down Under
Just Death. But when you can't get around a ship safely it is time to retire. Thanks Christopher.
very nice design. good video. i have been wanting to build a fixture to surface grind my chisels and joiner blades. you gave me some incentive and ideas. thanks. ps had to deduct points for the music.
Thanks Larry. Yeah I am not a music guy.
Nice jig Randy....I have a pile of those thread chasers for my die head, could i get a blue print set ? :)
BLue Print Set? Thank TC.
Randy there is a UA-cam channel called MUSEUM OF OUR INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE. It is mostly about Greenfield Ma. They have a video that was made in 1954 by the Geometric Tool Co. That was a very interesting and informative video. I liked the silent movie and piano music a big improvement over the techno music. Yuchol must of been hard on you. Thanks Andy
Yes I sub that channel and have a playlist with some of there videos. Yes Yuchol was hard on me. I am not a music guy.
@@RRINTHESHOP Your video on the Geometric die head reminded me of the channel glad you know about it. I really enjoyed the depth that you went into on the grinding fixture. It is a very simple and clever design. I was just messing with you about the music. I always enjoy your content. Thanks for all that you do Andy
@@andyZ3500s Thank you Andy. Maybe one of the music critics will donate there time to edit my videos, This video took me a week to edit.
Thumbs up!
I'll never do that myself, but it was fascinating to see all the steps and planning in making and using the fixturem
Great stuff.
Thanks Joe, This sure work well.
Good job Randy. I will have to look in the shop I have a number of sets of chasers but no die head to be found.
Thanks Bill sure worked out great.
I like the music at the 19:00 minute mark !
Nice, Randy. I'll have to to go through my chaser collection and see if I need to build a jig. I'd use my sine vise as you did before you got that fixture.
Sierra Specialty Auto no need, send them to Randy and he can sharpen them for you 😁
Yeah. But Joe is a nice guy and Not A Stalker. Thank you Yuchol. I am going to see Joe today.
This jig sure worked great. Thanks Joe.
Another Great Video Randy--Thanks jim
Thanks again! Jim.
Nice job , Cheers .
Thanks you Max.
That sure makes it easier to thread.
For sure. Thanks Ken.
That's a fixture for dovetail formtool grinding; screw machine tooling.
Thank you Terry for the great info. Kind of thought it was something like that.
@@RRINTHESHOP When dovetail and circular forms are designed you have to account for the form deviation when top rake is applied. If you change the top rake the form will change.
Looking good. Those threads are nice. Leaned a lot.
Thanks 👍
Excellent craftsmanship here....learned a lot, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you.
A little education about something I had no previous knowledge. Result is I find it interesting even though i will never use. :)
Thanks Ted for watching more useless information.
Sorry Randy i don't mean useless. Very interesting and i like the knowledge gained especially the tricky and sophisticated set up. I just don't thi nk I will ever get that advanced.
@@tedsykora1858 LOL Ted Just messin with you.
Good evening Randy! Like the grinding.
Thank you Craig.
