Fun fact: Poster colors were created to be a cheap alternative to gouache because in the past gouache was very expensive. It's called poster color because it was used to make posters! Since they weren't supposed to last much time, it was fine to use cheaper materials! Source: my high school art history classes lol
There is poster paint and poster paint though. In the past poster paint was often powder, as explained it was modern and rather awful tempera, not at all the same as traditional stuff which was very durable. The Sakura poster colour is a different beast, rather a nice one! The Ghibli masters used this kind of paint to lovely effect.
Back when I was in art school in the mid 2000’s, we had to take a few classes that required gouache. But it was expensive, one of my fellow classmates came across this brand called Shinhan poster paint. They were like 1.50 each and I bought like about 200 of them. The thickness was just like the Windsor newton gouache. I still have and use that poster paint and my illustrations I did 15 years ago are still as intense and saturated.
Yep. As a Korean who grew up having private art tutors my whole life, it was always pencils, charcoals, and poster paint at the beginning. Everyone I knew who was seriously interested in the arts all had poster paints at home since they were cheaper allowing a larger volume of painting output for lower cost. Only once we were deemed proficient enough in a medium were we allowed to graduate to the next one. Poster Paint -> Gouache -> Watercolor or Oil. Pencils -> Colored Pencils Charcoal -> Soft Pastels Oil pastels and Acrylics were what we usually used as children.
Our school had tempra poster paints and acrylics and called them all acrylics..imagine picking up a pot of poster paint and trying to paint thinking it's regular acrylic... needless to say I hated art back then... thought I wasnt good at it...KNOW YOUR ART SUPPLIES. even if they're cheap once you know how to use them you can make beautiful things 💛🥰
Those cheap, stinky poster paints for kids were my nightmare at school along with pentel oil pastels. Great combo for kids who have no idea how to draw or paint - give them super opaque, difficult mediums that require time and patience to create something decent.
idk why i barely see artists using or talking about poster color especially artists with a big following because i'm interested to see what they think of. i took fine arts in college major in visual communication (we do designs and advertising, photography, filming) and here in the Philippines, we were taught to only use a bit of water and paint thicker. we usually use it when we design logos, packages, movie posters etc. you can buy it here individually which i like. compared to other poster color brands, sakura poster color is a really good one. some of the other brands i've tried are a bit watery compared to this one which is thicker. you can also activate this paint by brushing with a wet brush. i've had some poster colors that dried and i just activated it with water. there are some brands that when the painting dries, it cracks especially if you paint it too thicker.
I live in the Philippines too, I still have some of Poster Color stuff that lays around unused lol. Generally I use black and white poster colors and mix it with colored watercolors, for me it blends less and is more vibrant when it comes to laying down black and white. Plus it's cheaper than buying a tube of them in watercolor and getting it in a smaller size for almost the same price.
I also majored in Graphic Design and we did everything with poster color. It's a trample for making anything design based. And don't really like gouache.
Ohhh those paints look juicy, and sooo fun to blend. I actually liked how poofy the sides of the hair was, reminded me of a studio Ghibli character feeling some intense emotion. The tamed hair looks more ~styled~ I really love the shadowy botanical bits in the back and foreground, too! So dang pretty, and what a fun medium!!
That's the first thing I thought of when she swatched them, it really looks like ink But the paintings doesn't really feel like it was done with ink, it's too opaque and matte The difference in feeling is really impressive, i was suprised

Just bought a print of this piece. I absolutely adore it but I can't help but also think that the watermarked preview in your shop looks absolutely stunning as well! Would be a must buy for me, really excited to hang it on my wall!!

I literally just saw some poster color in the store yesterday. I kind of wondered if I should get/try them, but I’m glad I could watch a video about it first.
The distinction between waterbased paint is a difficult thing. To me "poster color" or "poster paint" is a term for primary school supply that is a cheaper alternative to gouache and is called "tempera" sometimes for marketing purposes. Tempera paint is an emulsion that is supposed to be part "oily" and part "dry". You probably won't be able to buy a true tempera paint in an art supply store. I would say that gouache, poster color here, and "poster color tempera" are all in the same category of paint although they vary in some properties and overall quality. They're all opaque, water-soluble, and "dry". I would even argue that this poster color paint is, again, a marketing name only to differentiate it from regular, more creamy gouache.
this brings me back to my childhood because i used these specific paints as my first set!! I still have the giant ladybug I drew with them. It's rly inspiring to see you paint so professionally with something i associated with my childhood!!
This is one of the best paintings I have seen of yours yet. Wow. 😍 wonderful decision to have his shoulders and neck black. The leaves, and the hazey feel around his eyes are incredible together. This painting makes me think of and feel so many different things. Its superb.x
I can't believe I'm so early you are BY FAR one of my favorite artists, I love your art and your voice and all the wisdom you give me. As a young artist, I'm just trying my best and you never fail to get me out of art block and want to start creating. You are always so professional and yet so human. You aren't perfect and you show that like your struggle with his hair. You live in PA, right? I do too! Not near you tho lol I live near but not in Pittsburg. I'd tell you exactly where I am but it's the Internet and as I do look up to you my safety is first. I wish for the safety and the safety of you and your lovely family as well. I would love to be a patron (is that how it's spelled?) but I'm only 15 so in short, I'm broke haha. You inspire me so much thanks for that
I think it's interesting that in Italy we call guache "tempera" and both acrylic and tempera "acrilico". It's dumb because I often have to check the ingredients to make sure that I'm not buying tempera when I want acrylic and vice versa
I think the big fluffy hair you had was actually really nice and the contrast of the big white blob of the hair had a really nice contrast between the rendered dark neck and shoulders. No matter the outcome, your art is always inspiring. ❤
I love the warm and cool color scheme.😍You made it so that we focus on the face because that's where all the red is. I love how you do these little splotches of pants and then build it up to look like a person. I've always wanted to experiment with that style.❤😊
Dont get me wrong, i love your work. This one is very good too! I just... i love it when you are working with watercolor. Your brush dances over the paper, like a ballerina. The flow of your brushwork, of the pigment releasing on the paper, the emotions your bushwork releases, it is magical to me. Therapeutic.
I love this so much! 😍 thank you for inspiring me to start my own art UA-cam channel and I just passed 400 subs! 😱 you showed that artists can still be successful! 💕
I've been using poster paints since elementary because back then I was used to using acrylics and I wasn't fond of using watercolors before. I think gouache and poster paints helped me a lot to adjust in both.
This is a good alternative for tempura because even the nicer tempura my mom has has a chalkiness when it dries. If you seal the tempura it’s fine after but it dries fast and idk I like tempuras better for earthenware
Oh my, this reminds me about my childhood😊 There were two kinds of paints used in school: guaches (12 colors in a little buttons, there was a lot of chalk in them) and poster paints (6 or 12 in a little bottles). I loved their smell👩🏻🚀...
This video was very informative. I've been curious about poster colours for a while now and was wondering if it was worth investing in a set. You pretty much answered most of my questions, so thank you for that. And I love this piece, his eyes have a sad kind of pensive expression which make the painting have a sort of serene, calming effect, if that makes sense.
The Mijello MG color is Permanent Red. I adore this color! It’s a single pigment, PR 122, and it’s on my main palette. ❤️ love ❤️ this color!! Edited: Yours may be Permanent Red Deep which is PR 254. I don't have this in Mijello but do have it in Turner (Pyroll Red) which is just a touch more cherry.
That red is such a light wash I can't tell but it looks like the permanent rose or the permanent red deep I do that same thing with the red deep it has such a range of value so it could be that one.
Amazing as usual! So dreamy, I love it!!! I've mainly been painting with gouache lately. Can't wait to get a set of this and try it out too! Wonderful work!!
The first time I’ve used poster paints was way back when I was in high school and I never used the medium since then. You have always been so informative, Arleesha and I’m thankful for each contents you upload . 💞 Xoxo
I've been using poster colors since I was a kid since it's really cheap. For a dollar I can already buy 2-3 colors. Then a year ago I bought a set of gouache, I can't really see a difference except that it's more expensive and the way they spread (forgot the term).
Hmm I don't have Holbein acryla gouache, but I do have a set of Turner acrylic gouache that I assume is pretty similar-- but the main difference between normal gouache and acrylic gouache is that acrylic gouache isn't re-wettable, and from what I've heard about poster colors I think they are re-wettable-- so I'm pretty sure they're closer to a normal gouache, just more watery
I have holbein acryla and this sakura set and the poster color is runnier if your not careful adding water. The water amount I have added to acryla would make the same amount in poster very runny and transparent
People do use eggs for tempera still. Because of the way that it dries it's hard to keep in tubes so people who use egg tempera make their own paint from dry pigments instead
I always see poster paint as same use with gouache. That's why i decided to learn more about this than buying gouche. I just feel bad if i won't use it anymore.
I want to paint in your style so much but I struggle hehe :0) I love how you layer colors together and it becomes this cohesive unification of shades and pigments meeting and crashing into each other sending all love from one artist to another
I watched Wero's video on gouache and they mentioned that tempera always had two subcategories: tempera grassa (egg tempera) and tempera magra (the one that's like gouache). Pardon the spelling, I really wasn't sure. But yeah, apparently the egg one died out in popularity so everyone started referring to the gouache tempera as just "tempera." After looking it up myself, it seems like tempera is a process of making paints and it can be done with a variety of materials. I've also seen casein (milk based paint) referred to as a type of tempera. I'm not sure at all about this because it's unexpectedly hard to find info about this with just a quick google search. What I learned in art class was just about egg tempera so I was confused to hear Europeans call poster paint tempera but if Wero is correct, it makes sense. If anyone knows better than me, please let me know how much of this is right lol
I have to say thou, here where I live, they sell both poster and tempera (and even guache!) in these huge 500 to 1000 milliliter bottles. Which is super confusing, when you need specific one, yet the sellers other than art stores sell them interchangeable from each other.
I've been interested in poster colours since discovered them and your video is the insight into the experience of working with them I needed. Thank you And I must say, the painting came out magical (even with the bad haircut hah)
lol much like everyone else in the comments my first experience with poster colors was in my primary school art classes, and needless to say i had written off painting for a large chunk of my life since then since it was presented as being the 'paint for kids' when i was in art class, so i just decided i couldn't paint and stuck to drawing and digital painting instead - only recently picked up painting again to realise i should've PROBABLY been started on easier paint lol
Hi! I'm curious which is better? Miya Gouache or Sakura Poster Paints? I like to paint opaque and vibrant and I hate streakiness. 😊😊 Is the poster colors really milky while the gouache is creamy? Cause I like milky.
I'm just going to share my opinion. I don't think that less contrast is helping to detract attention from a certain area that much. I think that color choice and saturation do that moreso, at least in the face. Maybe you have to combine them. Right now it looks a little muddy to me because the red is bringing my attention back to the eyes and there's a little bit of conflicting emotions like "these shadows aren't sharp enough". Like if in the picture the lips were yellow or cyan my eyes would go straight to them successfully. I don't know maybe it's a personal preference thing, but I like for a picture to have flow more than any sort of real focal region if that makes any sense.
Flashback to school poster making contests. Rich kids got Sakura, average kids got some other brand, poor people like me got 3-4 colors and "mixed" them. A lot of those posters were poop brown from all the colors mixed hahahahaha
^__^ no problem lol! And hairstyles on characters can be so hard sometimes, but all in all this piece looks really cool. I always love the more moody color palettes. Nice work ^^
I haven't used Sakura, but I have Nicker Poster Colours. I think the poster paints out of the tubes are more milky/lighter, less opaque than Miya gouache. But you can use them like watercolor (from watching Oga Kazuo's painting video) or use as little water as possible to make them behave like gouache. What confounds me the most about poster colours is that they are so easy to lift and can be reactivated easily no matter how long has passed since the paints dry so I had to learn to apply thicker paint to avoid it.
@@barefacedquestions Thanks for the info :) I've also seen somewhere that they are more lightfast as compared to student-grade gouache like Himi Miya. Honestly they are also cheaper than the Himi miya gouache where I live.

I HIGHLY AGREE!
How come now the poster colors are more expensive than gouache? At least this ones.
Back when I was in art school in the mid 2000’s, we had to take a few classes that required gouache. But it was expensive, one of my fellow classmates came across this brand called Shinhan poster paint. They were like 1.50 each and I bought like about 200 of them. My school did this shit. I thought I hated acrylics for years. The funny thing is, I like poster paint, now that I know its it's own thing lol
The coloring around the ears and lips is just absolutely stunning on this piece. Love it so much. Thanks for sharing with us!
Those cheap, stinky poster paints for kids were my nightmare at school along with pentel oil pastels. Great combo for kids who have no idea how to draw or paint - give them super opaque, difficult mediums that require time and patience to create something decent.

Ohhh those paints look juicy, and sooo fun to blend. I actually liked how poofy the sides of the hair was, reminded me of a studio Ghibli character feeling some intense emotion. The tamed hair looks more ~styled~
I really love the shadowy botanical bits in the back and foreground, too! So dang pretty, and what a fun medium!!
These paints seem inky and vibrant and I love it... also the live stream was super fun as always.
That's the first thing I thought of when she swatched them, it really looks like ink
But the paintings doesn't really feel like it was done with ink, it's too opaque and matte
The difference in feeling is really impressive, i was suprised
Might sound weird, but I love how you lay down color. It's almost like watching your thought process
Hi, I would like to add my knowledge of poster color here, as I am from India, poster color is staple for many artists for making wallhangings as well..
# poster color is very bright and the pigments are intact and keep brightness for years ..say 10 plus years..
# poster color is intensively used to make bright art of gods and goddesses that are framed as wall hangings ., Specially very popular in South India.
# only problem with poster color is you must keep it away from getting wet..even a drop of water on your dried up painting can damage it.
# if mixed with pvc glue poster color becomes acrylics and permanent and waterproof.
# poster colors does gives you the semi transparent effect when diluted with water and used. And again it gives you the oil painting look if applied thickly and or mixed with white glue, it's that versatile.
# poster color can always be reactivated by adding water, no matter how old your paint bottle gets say even after 30 years and retain the same color and quality...just make sure you fill up the bottle just to dissolve the dried up colors and not fully..and it might take 10 minutes to 4 hrs to dilute completely depending on the amount of dried paint you got.
# another good quality of poster color is that it dries up very quickly, unlike watercolor..so you can save a lot of time while painting.
# best part of using poster color is that it is very versatile, you can go light to dark, dark to light, apply gradients, transperency or make it opaque ..it's bright and normally gives matte finish until glue is added. Awww flashbacks to elementary school poster making contests with the hands holding the Earth and having trees and little people in a chain :333
😂 It's interesting how everyone made same stuff in their childhood all over the world.

I literally just saw some poster color in the store yesterday. I kind of wondered if I should get/try them, but I’m glad I could watch a video about it first.
Love the way you handle the colors and the blending on this one. its cold and mysterious. The red used on the ears and lips is such a cool effect.
what a gorgeous painting! i love the contrast between the shoulders and the background, and the gradient from black to white!

In Russia we make tempera paints with dry pigments, beer (or vinegar) and egg yolk. They teach how to make and use it in art universities.
Have you seen the Nicker UA-cam channel? They do speed paints using their brand of poster colors which are the same that studio ghibli uses!

Amazed with the change about shades colors in the neck.
Once again, marvellous work. Congrats! 💟
I hated acrylics for a very very long time, for years I only used them when I had to, but recently I started using them again and now I love them!
The livestream was so much fun and just what I needed while I sketched. Your work inspires me so much!
Lovely painting! I really like how you can see hints of the underpainting :)
I love how this turned out!
This looks sooooooooo pretty!
Such lovely shading 😃
I've been using poster paints since elementary because back then I was used to using acrylics and I wasn't fond of using watercolors before. I think gouache and poster paints helped me a lot to adjust in both.

I've been contemplating between sakura and nicker poster paint.
Is Poster Color more similar to Holbein Acryla Gouache? in terms of consistency - it looks runnier than a normal gouache?
Hmm I don't have Holbein acryla gouache, but I do have a set of Turner acrylic gouache that I assume is pretty similar-- but the main difference between normal gouache and acrylic gouache is that acrylic gouache isn't re-wettable, and from what I've heard about poster colors I think they are re-wettable-- so I'm pretty sure they're closer to a normal gouache, just more watery
the consistency of poster color, from my experience, really depends on the brand + the quality but are usually runnier than a normal gouache.
I have holbein acryla and this sakura set and the poster color is runnier if your not careful adding water. The water amount I have added to acryla would make the same amount in poster very runny and transparent
@@ZJART3333 just ooc,, which one do you like better?? (If you do have a favorite that is :) )
I love your videos 🤗 especially your diy watercolor videos 😍 would you ever post an ASMR video of you making your paints?
I like his new hair, it looks fine, and I love all the angles and shading in his face.
This painting was beautiful!
I really love that red underpainting - as usual, you are very inspiring and give me lots of ideas that I'll probably never actually do. 😂
I first heard about the medium cause little witch academias backgrounds where created using poster paints
This is the most common paint in my country, I use it a lot.
I’m such a stan I love u
People do use eggs for tempera still. Because of the way that it dries it's hard to keep in tubes so people who use egg tempera make their own paint from dry pigments instead
I always see poster paint as same use with gouache. That's why i decided to learn more about this than buying gouche. I just feel bad if i won't use it anymore.
haha i remembered using buncho poster colour
I think this is absolutely BEAUTIFUL ❤️❤️ it’s amazing ❤️
I want to paint in your style so much but I struggle hehe :0) I love how you layer colors together and it becomes this cohesive unification of shades and pigments meeting and crashing into each other
sending all love from one artist to another
Man this stuff is the thing that got me an A+ in my art in elementary school
I love these paints☺️
I watched Wero's video on gouache and they mentioned that tempera always had two subcategories: tempera grassa (egg tempera) and tempera magra (the one that's like gouache). Pardon the spelling, I really wasn't sure. But yeah, apparently the egg one died out in popularity so everyone started referring to the gouache tempera as just "tempera."
After looking it up myself, it seems like tempera is a process of making paints and it can be done with a variety of materials.
I'd love a link to these. Keep up the wonderful work! You're truly helping out this older Artist. ❤️🤗
My favorite way to use poster colors is to use dry brush. When using poster colors, I only use water to clean up my brush.
I have to say thou, here where I live, they sell both poster and tempera (and even guache!) in these huge 500 to 1000 milliliter bottles. Which is super confusing, when you need specific one, yet the sellers other than art stores sell them interchangeable from each other.
wow thats a beautiful piece! the paints don't look all that different from gouache to me.
I love this piece so much!!!
I remember using poster colour a lot when I was in secondary school and I used to be under the impression that it was paint for kids
I've been interested in poster colours since discovered them and your video is the insight into the experience of working with them I needed. Thank you
And I must say, the painting came out magical (even with the bad haircut hah)
This i wonderful! Beautifully painted and conceived. I love it! :D
I just saw your video and so I just bought these paints 😂😂😂
You are truly a great artist friend 👍
I'm sold!! It looks amazing!!
The paints of my childhood!!
lol much like everyone else in the comments my first experience with poster colors was in my primary school art classes, and needless to say i had written off painting for a large chunk of my life since then since it was presented as being the 'paint for kids' when i was in art class, so i just decided i couldn't paint and stuck to drawing and digital painting instead - only recently picked up painting again to realise i should've PROBABLY been started on easier paint lol
Hi! I'm curious which is better? Miya Gouache or Sakura Poster Paints? I like to paint opaque and vibrant and I hate streakiness. 😊😊 Is the poster colors really milky while the gouache is creamy? Cause I like milky.
yass ive been wanting this review!!!!
I love how the picture gives two emotions. Like the guy is in a peaceful place (like the park) but his face says “Yeah. I’ve seen some crap”
This looks amazing!!!🌼🦖
Thank you for the infos, super useful! Could you please tell which brush are you using for the underpainting? (With the wood colour handle) thank you!
Yeeeessss mijello!!! I love that paint!!
Inspiring, thanks
Ah it looks so dreamy
Beautiful
I expected these to be like $20, but when I looked it up and saw almost $60, I went 👁👄👁
Here in Philippines, it's between 20-30 pesos or 00.20-00.61dollars
On Amazon USA they are 30 dollars right now
hi! I love your videos and I was wondering, when you do portraits like this do you do them completely from your mind or do you use reference pictures?
random fact: tempera is often made with the help of lineseed oil, casein and mild lye
^__^ no problem lol! And hairstyles on characters can be so hard sometimes, but all in all this piece looks really cool. I always love the more moody color palettes. Nice work ^^
Would you say these are better than Himi Miya gouache?
I haven't used Sakura, but I have Nicker Poster Colours. I think the poster paints out of the tubes are more milky/lighter, less opaque than Miya gouache. But you can use them like watercolor (from watching Oga Kazuo's painting video) or use as little water as possible to make them behave like gouache. What confounds me the most about poster colours is that they are so easy to lift and can be reactivated easily no matter how long has passed since the paints dry so I had to learn to apply thicker paint to avoid it.
@@barefacedquestions Thanks for the info :)
I've also seen somewhere that they are more lightfast as compared to student-grade gouache like Himi Miya. Honestly they are also cheaper than the Himi miya gouache where I live.
Can we use propelyne glycol or glycerine with poster paints?
