"None of our bad stories contain the element of a reserve in them, but we have plenty of stories in which people should have thrown their reserve but didn't".
Good stuff Chris, I learned a lot.

I had this very thing happen to me today - threw the reserve after 2 rotations unable to correct. walked away completely unscathed despite landing in a tree. I’m so glad I threw the reserve!

a trick : you can watch series on InstaFlixxer. Me and my gf have been using them for watching a lot of movies these days.

Chris - you're so right. I did this too. I was doing an SIV, intending to do a spin into a turn. Hit it too hard on the recovery and went into a spiral. Then I pulled on the wrong brake. Thought I just wasn't pulling hard enough. Actually let go of the other brake and hauled on the wrong brake with both hands. Somehow, even with the coach saying "left brake, left brake, left brake, left brake..." my brain thought I was doing the right thing, just not hard enough. Sigh. Tossed my reserve and went for a swim. The *really* funny thing, watching the video, is that when I let go of the brake to grab my reserve, my wing started to recover. The wing wasn't locked in the spiral, just the pilot. I do believe I learned and will get it right in the future - time will tell.

I really love the on-the-ground demonstration using the toy glider.
I understand things much better than looking at in-the-air videos again and again.

Devon, totally my pleasure. I've been teaching this stuff for years and it's really nice to have it all in one place.

I just stumbled on this today. It ahs been a few years since I have flown paragliders, but Chris is spot on. I have had a pleasant spiral wind up in about 2 seconds. I browned out from the G's, but was able to get out. In that scenario, lean back in the harness, and tighten the abdominals. It helps to retain conciousness.

If you start to fade seeing those black dots you need to tighten every muscle you got in your legs stomach and anywhere else to keep the blood pressure to the brain and try and pull that outside break while you got a chance

Thanks Chris. 🤟🏼A great informative video series so far, with particular emphasis on safety. Fantastic that you spent the time to create these videos to help pilots unfamiliar with these manoeuvres. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
My only one observation was that I didn't recall anything mentioned about the pilot centering their weight in the harness, or even weighshifting in the harness towards the outside (opposite to the direction of the turn) to initiate with the progressive exit of a spiral dive to complete it on a chosen heading. This is a technique that I used daily to assist with spiral exits when flying commercial PG tandems over they years and it can be as effective as using some opposite brake.
Pilots may find that if 'locked into' or in a stable spiral and go hands up on the brakes, that they will remain in the spiral as you stated. However, the centering of our weight or applying some opposite weight shift alone, can enable some wings to start to exit the the spiral without any outside brake being applied.

Great feedback. One thing we have observed is that when things are in equilibrium or close to it, weight shift works. If things get really far out of equilibrium then the hands have to activate and then the weight shift can help.
We only coach assymetric spiral ( nothing to do with an assymetric deflation btw ) ---> at low intensity levels the glider comes out of the spiral just by taking a deep breath or thinking about coming out. At the extreme opposite end of the spectrum ---> high intensity levels, it takes brake, weight shift and precision with the eyes.
I sure love talking about this stuff. Thanks again for the feedback. We will work more of that into future discussions. No doubt that weight shift is the key to so many things.

Hi Chris, thanks and congratulations for your tutorials, I find them the most explicative and clear to understand also thanks to the small glider you use for explanations. Please can you make videos also about SAT, Negative spins, and these kind of figures? I sstill hard for me to understand exactly how they works and how you get into and out of it. Thanks!

Nice video. My questions are 1) if you do hands up won’t the energy dissipate and natural slow and 2) fighter pilots have compression pants to keep blood in their head and help them from passing out, which isn’t an option on a Paramotor and naturally would be more sensitive to the g forces.

Very cool vids and explanations Chris. Just not sure about your blanket idea that all PG's, when left alone will eventually end in a stable spiral... ;)

These are lessons for less experienced pilots so even if there’s an exception to the rule it’s good for pilots like me to recognize I probably need to act if I’m in a spiral. The alternative is a pilot sitting back and waiting for the glider to exit which it might not do and suddenly you are in a very life threatening situation. There’s almost certainly scenarios where all gliders can get stuck in a spiral due to improperly configured harness, weight, pilot asymmetry, etc. Chris’s advice can save those lives

Thanks for sharing, very helpful. I've done spirals and feel okay as long as the wing is veritcal. How does it then go to Horizontal? Is that from continuing to pull inside break? I can see where that would be more intimidating.

    • @SuperFlyParaglidingSchool
      @SuperFlyParaglidingSchool  Рік тому

Hi Adam - correct - just pull more brake but the detail is that you can pull at say 5 out of 10 for years and then one day you pull at 6 out of ten and instead of having the intensity come up by one increment, the intensity comes up to a 10 out of 10. It's creepy and spooky like that. If you can handle the G's, that helps but it doesn't mean that you will be able to make it exit on a timeline. Tricky right?

Chris, do you have a video on the difference between an asymmetrical spiral versus a regular spiral dive, and how to manage the difference?
This video makes it sound like spirals are not a good decent technique, are asymmetrical spirals?

You say it's never too late to brake and turn another 90 to exit the spiral after a bad exit seemingly when the glider is way back behind you... Is this not asking for a spin braking while the wing is pitched back behind?

Should of gone with the reserve? YES, YES, I was wondering how many people who die, how many of the deaths, come from not using the reserve. I see you do not pull and punches concerning flying smart. In these days and ages, many people grew up not doing ANYTHING in sports and physically never put them selves on the line as to solving the physics of the pendulum. Growing up sailing and being a professional sailor as a helmsman the physics of moving water around the ship have great influence on the direction I want to go to/ in. Growing up sailing, exposed me to the dynamics of sailing which of course is just another fluid like element being acted on by a controlled surface. Hopefully. The fact that you needed to tell the people to counter a spin by pulling this and to not forgetting to ease off on their opposite side is indicative of kids working out in the gym and sitting on the equipment, an staring at their cell phones. I would think the farm kids might be better students.

There is a video of a tandom flight with a white fife and an Asian and the y were in a spiral could not get out of it. .... the guest rider simple took control and PUSH D FORWARD AND THEY OULOED OUT OF THE SPIRAL. So how can you imply that this is incorrect or outdated maneuver to save your ass because that simple maneuver save their lives there was about 20 feet from splattering onto the beach
