When you embroider by machine or even hand, you're supposed to back the piece you want to embroider with interfacing; just to stabilise it so the fabric doesn't shift. It also usually helps with the tension issue. I hope this helps for any future projects or for anyone else.
There was an official pattern release through simplicity for the dresses\gowns in LOTR and I got the adult and child versions and the patterns made really good facsimiles. I use them and extrapolate from them constantly.
Wow, your pin tucks look fantastic!! Totally agree with you about the Rohirrim wearing linen, especially for a shift. Can't wait to see the rest of this project.
The problems you are having with the metallic thread constantly breaking is because of the way the spool is unwinding. It needs to come off the spool a specific way to keep the thread from twisting on itself and causing the outer layer of metallic coating to snap. A "metallic thread director" is an attachment for your spool pin that directs the thread properly for this very fragile thread. This video has some helpful tips as well. ua-cam.com/video/J4IvHogl_0Y/v-deo.html Hope this is helpful. I can't wait for the next episode of this project 🥰
I'd love to do this sort of sewing on my channel when I'm better at sewing! I love disneybounding and making costumes so you can actually wear it and enjoy it makes more sense to me otherwise it's a waste of money and time to me. I'm excited to see how this comes out I've so loved your sewing journey it inspired me to learn and share it on my channel so thank you xx
There are so many dresses from those movies that I’ve wanted to make over the years, I’m so excited for you!! I actually made a blouse inspired by this dress myself (very loosely inspired; mostly just in long sleeve that tied at the upper arms). I can’t wait to see how yours turns out, it’s going to be gorgeous!! ❤
Metallic thread can be hard to work with. If you have it horizontally in your machine like you would do with sewing threads it twists off the spool and that is why it breaks. Sometimes putting it on a vertical post to feed it off the spool helps. Also there are some nice shiny embroidery thread by Sulky that you may like to work with. Your pintucks look amazing. (they make a pintuck foot) Nice to see you utilizing more of your machines features. Brother/Babylock is my machine choice.
Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh! Yes yes yes! I LOVE EOWYN! I can’t wait to see this done, you’ll be an adorable Eowyn! More fantasy sewing, please!
Those pintucks look amazing! I'm making a pattern with tiny pintucks for my Elfia/ Elf Fantasy Fair costume. My pattern lets me hand baste a line first, fold exactly on that line, then machine stitch as close as possible to the hand basting, then removing the handbasting. I'm amazed you just went for it, directly under the machine, and it worked fine!
I love your adventurous spirit, the pintucks you tailored are amazing. This is the most fun ever I am so excited to go on this sewing exploration with you. You have inspired me to step out of my Meh Era with my sewing! ❤ BTW your music selection was cool.
So excited to see you sewing LotR inspired pieces! 😃The embroidery, the pintucks, everything looks great so far. I can't wait to see the finished result!
When sewing the decorative stitch with metallic thread, I find it breaks less if you stop every few stitches to raise and lower the presser foot. It relaxes the strain on the thread enough to stop at least some of the snapping.
I love this so much!!! I used the silver metallic thread when sewing the Door of Moria onto a piece of black fabric, and I can concur that the metallic threads are a huge pain in the butt. The door was made with a mix of hand and machine sewing. Both were frustrating to do due to the thread. It tangled easily, broke a lot, got caught in the fabric (which would also cause the thread to break), and I just hated every second. But it looks pretty! I didn't bother with the lettering, though. No way.
This is going to be soooo pretty! The pintucks turned out perfectly; pintucks terrify me! LOL! I have seen other sewists using tape to mark their dress forms' center front/back, armholes, and neckline. This makes it easier to drape the bodice, only having to draw out half to make a pattern. So happy you're getting your new ceiling! Have a Happy Easter, xoxo's Sandie😊🌷
I am SO excited for this!!! I’ve always wanted to make this dress, as well as the other dresses that Eowyn/Arwen wear! I’m very excited to see the rest of this and I’d love if you did more dresses from the movies and other fantasy projects!!
nice pin tucks. They are an underated feature often used in the past just so garments could be expanded or contracted as people changed shape or the item was passed on.
Have you tried putting the metallic thread in the bobbin and sewing from the backside. Also a stabilizer would definitely help. I usually mark the line where I want to embroider (don’t cut out yet), stabilize, embroider, remove stabilizer, sew facing in neckline then cut that neckline and turn the facing. Not sure at what point I would put in the pin tucks. Maybe go ahead and cut the neckline, pin tuck, then stabilize when you add the pin tucks. I’d try sampling till I was happy. Maybe a different gold thread.
2 months ago I finished some machine embroidery with metallic thread as well and the thread broke a lot, but I figured out that when you adjust the thread tension to a looser setting the thread won’t break as much. Not to loose though, cause that will create loops, but with some test strips you can find the setting that works for your fabric and thread combination. Maybe this will help for future progects.
What an awesome project idea! Anything LotR related, I'm here for it. It might be a longer video for a simple part of the process, but there are also a lot of firsts in this one, as you like to say. I'm super stoked to see the next part! :D
This is my idea of a perfect video, sewing + lotr! Please do more projects after this! Already loving this so much, and your pintucks looks wonderful 💚
im so happy i found this video since i wanted to do a lotr inspired dress for my textiles project in school, but i had a very vague idea of how to go about it, so thanks so much for making this really informing and easy to follow video! i cant wait to try to make my own and to see how the rest of yours turns out. it looks so amazing so far
"I bought all the materials for the project and then I chickened out" Story of the life of any creative person 🥰 I had such a good laugh at this, because I'm sitting here, in my pajama bottoms watching you sew instead of starting my project and felt called out
Try to use Amann Mettler metallic thread. It's embroidery thread for machine use. Also use a metallic needle. Never had a problem like you mentioned with this setup
I love how it turned out, great work! I can't wait to see the end result. I just watched the movies for the first time in my life a few days ago and I'm OBSESSED. Help!! I'm already on my second watch and I'm definitely making this dress. I want to make so many clothes inspired by the films which is great because I have quite a lot of leftover fabric and some garments I wanted to modify but didn't know what to do with them lol.
Watching you, I feel so inspired. I want try sewing.. the machine we have at home is very old and broken. But I will buy a new one someday for sure.. I do alter or repair some of my clothes by hand, but I want to make clothes
That dress on the last video where the shoulder is too loose, can you do pin tucks on that to reduce (for a lack of better word) the fabric I guess, so that it's not as loose? Sorry, I don't know sewing terms..
Tell me about it! I just watched the films for the very first time and my brother (who is a big fan) made sure we watched the extended editions. Excellent choice, I'M OBSESSED! And I was just thinking of making this dress, it's so perfect!!
My daughter was born a day after this video was published. Her middle name is Eowyn based on the character, of course. It's easier attempting to create her than this outfit though 😂
The extended version of the lord of the rings involves a making of with an extensive discussion of this and other costumes. I can absolutely recommend it.
@Loepsie if you go into the part thats called something like "making middle earth" on all the work done by weta workshop there is a section called "costumes of middle earth" where the costume designer talks through all costumes in detail and shows some of the dyeing processes and embroidery and stuff.
I don't know how I ended here (well, I am a fan of LOTR, so I have a guess...), but what you do is absolutely lovely. I will definitely watch the end of the process. Thanks !

wow this...this makes SO much sense thank you so much for posting this! this is gonna make all my embroidery so much easier omg.
OMG! so excited!! Please do more LOTR/fantasy sewing, that would be great.
I'd love to, we'll see how this one goes 😁

So excited to see a Lord of the Rings costume project. Those movies were what got me interested in costuming.

i'm pretty sure the 'pin tucks' are cording which would explain the curves in them

Although I enjoy pretty much everything you post, your early fantasy-related content has always been my favourite

I adore the sewing series format you've been doing! So nice to see more in depth about each garment 🖤

Hahaha I spent way too much time looking for royalty free music that sounded similar to the Edoras theme 😂

Yes, linen! That’s going to be glorious to wear. ❤️
VERY excited for this! Did this myself, it's no small feat.
Yay! Another sewing journey! ❤
Nice work! Slow and steady wins the race.

Your doing amazing! The pin tucks and embroidery look great. Where did you get the linen? I love the jumper you have on in the video, did you make it?
I'm so excited for this!
Looks awesome so far 😊
I don't know how I ended here (well, I am a fan of LOTR, so I have a guess...), but what you do is absolutely lovely. I will definitely watch the end of the process. Thanks !
Love this, I've never thought of pin tucks on a neckline! How are you going to get into it now it's more fitted, side lacing?
I left an opening on the side, will probably do a hidden zipper 🤫
*reads title and immediately gasps*
I miss your makeup and hair vids and tea time! 😊
I appreciate you, thank you for making content.
Ooooh i miss LOTR videos on your channel!!❤
Your pintucks look wonderful!! Good job!
Looking forward to the rest!

You should make the dress Arwen gets married in
That's velvet though 😭😭😭 Arguably the worst possible fabric to work with
Man, you made pintucks look easy
I am from India,I like vintage outfits, plz make video about 1940s vintage outfits
I love her helm's deep dress so much❤❤❤
